Well, Dr. Hanson, as I've been telling Dr. Pollack all
these weeks, and by the way please convey my condolences to
him about his accident, there have been these really
terrible side effects of the experimental medication. I
mean, well, not really terrible compared to the disease
itself, you understand, and I am *very* grateful it's in
remission, but they are *terribly* uncomfortable and
embarrassing. I'm wet all the time, and I basically have to
shower every few minutes.
It's all there in the file. Oh? No, no, I understand; I
don't blame you a bit. You doctors are *so* busy and my
file must be five inches thick by now. What I mean by "wet"
is, well, several things.
Well, yes, since you ask, urinary incontinence. I have to
wear these incontinent diapers for it, because I just can't
hold it when I cough, or when I laugh, or anything. I
*wish* I had lost my sense of humor, doctor, but I laugh
very easily, and always have. I'm *very* ticklish, for
instance. But in a way, that's the least of it. At least a
lot of people have urinary incontinence. I have all these
other symptoms.
I guess the biggest thing is the milk. Dr. Pollack calls it
Galactorrhea. It's scary. My breasts have all blown up like
a nursing mother's, and they give a *lot* of milk. No. No,
that's what's so weird about it; I've never been pregnant.
And yet, there they are. They hurt terribly if I don't use
the breast pump, but the relief never seems to last very
long. And if I hear a baby cry, in a supermarket or
something, they just *flood*. I wear this, you know,
nursing bra to absorb some of it, but the milk just floods
in spite of it and my whole front is sopping wet and I have
to go right home and shower and change.
Or maybe the biggest thing is the sweat. I sweat like a pig
all the time, now, unless it's very cold. I mean, just look
at me right now, I'm positively dripping sweat and your
office is on the cool side. That's another reason I have to
go shower a lot. You can see how all my clothes, hanging
over there, are soaked through, and how the sweat drips off
my face and body. A lot of the time I wear a light raincoat
thing--there it is, with my clothes--which makes my
sweating even worse but at least makes it so that people
can't *see* that my clothes are soaked through.
But the most embarrassing thing of all is the vaginal
lubrication. It just floods at even the slightest, uh,
stimulation, like even visual stimulation? And you know,
doctor, that we women aren't very visual in our sexuality.
I would have to wear incontinent diapers for this even if I
didn't have to wear them for, you know, the other thing.
And I was never terribly interested in sex. I mean, I was
normal, but now--well, it's very hard to say this, but you
*are* a doctor--sometimes just walking around the tiny
friction between my thighs or something makes me just
*explode*. Or sometimes when someone just touches me, even
a hug from a girlfriend, and you know I was *never* "that
way" at all. And a few days ago it happened when a masher
in the park just reached out and pinched my bottom! Yes! I
was so shocked, I couldn't even scream!
Dr. Pollack says that the extreme lubrication and the
orgasms aren't really related. He says that I might have
had either problem without the other, but that doesn't make
it any easier. I mean, imagine having your underwear flood
for no reason! Of course, not *you* Doctor, you're a man,
but imagine it for a woman! Or imagine having an
uncontrollable orgasm just walking along the street, and
then you look around and everybody's staring! I want to
just crawl into a hole!
No, doctor, I don't want to discontinue the therapy. I
would rather be uncomfortable and alive than comfortable
and dead. I understand that. I just hope there is some new
therapy instead, or at least something you can prescribe
for the side effects. Dr. Pollock always said that new
things are coming along all the time and I should not lose
hope.
All right. Yes, I'll put my clothes back on as soon as
you've gone.
What? Oh, yes, Dr. Pollack's son and I did date for a
while. I didn't know you knew that. That was before I knew
he was married. Not Dr. Pollack, of course; his son. I was
very upset when I found out, of course, but somehow it
never affected my relationship with Dr. Pollack, who is
such a sweetie pie.
How did you know, if you don't mind my asking? Oh, is that
right? And Phillip introduced you to his father and he
brought you into the practice? Well, it's a small world, I
always say. Well, if I were you I would let the friendship
lapse. Phillip is a pig. Nothing at all like his father.
