It was New Years Eve and I sat in the silence, staring nervously
at the clock. It was several minutes until midnight. Several minutes
until the next year.
At the moment, I was sitting alone in my room rather than out at
a party with my friends. My friends... some of them lifelong friends...
though I'd only known them a year. But I was alone by choice. I wanted
to face the coming New Year by myself.
I wasn't always so afraid of New Years. In fact, I used to enjoy
it, just like everyone else. But then one day... one New Years Eve
several years back, that all changed. Back then, my name was Jason
Burns, and I was a pretty normal 24 year old guy with both a steady job
and a steady girlfriend.
It had really started when I had been walking over to a buddy's
place for our big New Years bash, and had a weird run in with an even
weirder homeless guy. He had been old... and strange, with wild, crazy
eyes. Then he'd rudely demanded that I give him change. Of course, with
that kind of attitude I had no intention of doing that and brushed him
off. That it turned out was to be my big mistake.
The weird homeless guy had yelled at me, though I couldn't really
make out everything that he was saying because he was doing it in some
strange rhyming singsong voice. However, I do remember his threat that
I would lose my life that night, and I think I remember a part of his
rhyming going something like, "You shall lose all that you hold dear, a
new life to gain every year..."
Of course I had shrugged off that nonsense as the rantings of a
crazy old man, though soon discovered that those very rantings weren't
quite as much nonsense as I had believed. Unfortunately, I discovered
this far too late.
I had been in the middle of the party with my friends when the
stroke of midnight struck. Suddenly, I had felt a strange wave of
dizziness completely overwhelm me, tearing away all shreds of sense and
reality from me. And when it all snapped back into place... EVERYTHING
had changed.
I had been completely shocked to suddenly find myself in another
place... at another party. And even more so, in a new body. I was seven
years older, two inches shorter and twenty pounds heavier. But that
wasn't everything. Without warning... I had become someone else.
Someone who was married and had a little boy.
The experience had been completely shocking... overwhelming even.
Never in my life would I have even imagined that such a thing was
possible... to step out of my own life and into someone else's. But
just as shocking was the realization that I was slowly beginning to
know things... remember things that belonged to my new life and body,
not my old. That made it easier to adapt... but not a whole lot.
From the moment that I had changed, I knew that I couldn't tell
anyone what had happened. No one would believe me. But I still had to
know what had happened, so called back home to myself... and to my
friends, quickly discovering that 'Jason Burns' had been hit with a bad
stroke at the stroke of midnight and died. My old life was gone and I
was horrified to realize that I could never go back.
For the next couple of months, I was lost and confused, not sure
whether I belonged to my new life or my old. I had what I really NEEDED
to fit into my new life, at least as far as knowledge went, but I had
gotten older... I had lost some of my youth and freedom. I didn't know
what to do. The marriage that I'd inherited along with my new body
suffered badly and we were soon on the verge of divorce.
Finally, I decided to try adapting... to make the best of what I
had. It wasn't easy, but it was better than the alternative, namely...
going insane. I worked hard to get back in good with my new family...
and just as hard to burn off the extra weight that had come along with
that body and get it into shape. And after a lot of hard work, things
were really starting to pay off for me.
Then, after a full year had passed, I discovered the horrible
truth. A truth which made my curse even more terrible. I had been at
another New Years Eve party with my new friend's and family, when at
the stroke of midnight the dizziness hit me again. Once again my life
was torn from me... revealing that my New Year change was not just a
one time occurrence. It was much worse than that.
This time, I found myself transformed into a scrawny teenage boy.
In one tick of a clock, I had lost everything again. I had lost my
adult status. I had lost my new family, just like I had lost my old.
And I had lost everything that I'd held stable in my life.
I nervously remembered what had happened to my real body when I
had first lost it, and had to know if it had happened again. I called
my previous self... and was both surprised and confused when he
answered. But after a short talk and some questions, it became evident
that 'he' didn't remember being me... or at least that I had been him.
To him, everything was as it always was.
"At least I didn't leave her a widow," I'd sighed with deep
sorrow, thinking about my previous wife. But she was gone... along with
my previous life.
Throughout the next year, I lived something of a nightmare. I was
now a teenager, trapped under the dictates of my 'parents' and forced
to go through all of the trials of adolescence again, including the
prison that is high school. And I had to bear the knowledge that I
couldn't dare get too comfortable, because as soon as the New Year
arrived... I would lose everything once again.
Still, I did try to make the best of my situation and new life,
at least as much as I could considering the circumstances. I was young,
healthy and single again, and school was much easier this time than the
first. However, there were a lot of limits on what a teenager could do,
not to mention the ever present specter of New Years in the future.
And that led to where I was at the moment. It was New Years Even
and I was a 17 year old boy with a bit of an acne problem, and a couple
of parents in the next room. But not for long. There were only a few
seconds left until...
Suddenly, the dizziness hit me... the wave of darkness and the
bottom of reality dropping out from beneath me. It was what I had been
expecting... what I had been both anticipating and dreading for a full
year. And now that it was there... my life had just been thrown to the
wind, with only Heaven knowing where I'd end up.
Just a moment later, I was somewhere else... and someone else. I
suddenly found myself sitting on the edge of a bed, with the loud
sounds of cheering and celebrating the New Year coming from the next
room. I just remained where I was, taking a deep breath and trying to
get my bearings.
There was one thing that immediately struck me, even before I
looked down at my new body. I was now female. Somehow, I realized this
fact before I'd even lowered my eyes to the generous breasts that now
protruded from my chest. With a single glance, I could tell that I had
a pretty nice body, and it was well shown off since I was wearing a
revealing blouse, a fairly short skirt and high heels. I also noticed
that my skin was a bit darker than normal.
I remained where I was, absorbing all of the new sensations that
I was feeling. For one, my balance was all different, which was not
surprising since it wasn't the first time that I'd moved to a new body.
However, I knew from experience that this wouldn't be a problem for
very long at all.
For another thing, I felt a bit dizzy and light headed, which was
obviously a result of the alcohol in my body from celebrating the New
Year. It had been over a year since I'd been intoxicated, and now I was
drunk without having ever touched a drop of alcohol.
And finally, there was a warm wet feeling between my legs, as
well as a bit of discomfort there. I instinctively knew that this was
the result of having just had sex with my boyfriend Miguel, who was now
taking a snooze in the bed right behind me.
Though that last thought was somewhat disconcerting, there was a
part of me that felt that this was also perfectly natural. It was the
new part of me, that I had inherited along with that new body and life.
For the moment though, I tried not to think about what my new body had
just done before I'd moved in. There would be time enough for that
later.
With that, I instinctively reached for the pack of cigarettes on
the night stand and fumbled to light one. And though I had never smoked
in any of my previous lives, it was quite obvious that I now did in
latest one. I let out a stream of smoke, feeling a little calmer.
I took another drag of my cigarette as I stood up and glanced
back to where Miguel was snoring. Then with a slight shake of my head,
I slowly waked across the room. With each step, bits of knowledge and
memories from my new life slowly filtered into my mind.
"My name," I whispered, uttering the first words from my new
throat, "is Theresa Santiago."
Then I reached the mirror on the wall and silently stared at the
reflection that was completely new to me, yet had a strong sense of
familiarity to it as well. It was a hot looking Latin chick that stared
back at me. She... I was in my early twenties... 22 to be exact, and
definitely a looker.
I stared at myself in silence for a minute or so, knowing that
this was me... that this would be me for the next year. It would be a
little strange becoming a woman, though I knew that I could adapt. In
fact, I was already starting to do so, thanks in large part to the
inherited knowledge that went with my new life.
I would adapt. I had no other real choice. It was either that or
go insane. Somehow, I would have to make the best of my new life while
I could. That would be my New Years resolution. Perhaps I would even
come to enjoy it, and regret losing it when the next year came.
After a few more seconds, I decided that it was time for me to go
out to where the real party was and meet my new friends and family for
the first time. The prospect made me both nervous and excited at the
same time.
Then finally, just before turning away, I winked and blew a kiss
at the sexy chica in the mirror, whispering, "Happy New Year..."
