As C got out of the car, he was sure his partner D had finally made
a bad call. As far as he could see this was just an ordinary couple,
no obvious changes or mutations. But D called the shots and so far
he had been uncannily right. The couple looked a little wary when D
showed him their fake bureau badge, but again that would be normal in
most any situation, but D made the high sign with his hand which put
C on alert.
So D had noticed something.
The man looked at the woman, shrugged and then turned to the house.
As they walked thru the door C checked the layout of the house, again
all looked normal enough. Puzzled at what had alerted D, he kept
looking for some clue. As D and the couple walked into the living
room, D signaled again to C who faded back into the hallway. Pulling
out his cell, he speed dialed a number and said, "Code Blue."
Code Blue meant that one of the boxes was officially at the site and
a containment group might be needed.
The group tasked for this was nearing the scene even as the call was
relayed to them. Putting his cell away, C walked forward into the
living room where everyone was sitting down. The man and woman, who
were obviously a couple, turned and sat down on the couch cuddling
together. Thats when it hit C, the man and the woman were nearly the
same height. The man they had on record was taller and near bald.
If this was the same man, then clearly something had changed.
Looking around C spotted the box in the far corner of the living
room, it was in its collasped form, but that wasn't necessarily a bad
sign, the house looked neat and well cared for. The couple could have
just collasped it when they weren't using it. But C had a feeling
the moment was gone.
"Sir," D started. "We are with a government task force assigned to
look for and collect boxes such as the one that you have over there."
He pointed at the box.
"You're the Men In Black," stated the woman positively, "I thought
that was just a movie!"
C groaned and shook his head as D spoke up. "We really hate that
movie, the only real simularity is that we dress the way we do, it
was a mandate passed down by a certain president when we were first
formed."
"Well then who are you?" the man asked. D was fairly certain this
was the man known in the file as David Mooney.
"I am agent D and this is agent C," D said reluctantly, holding up
his hand, " I know, it just makes us sound more like the movie, but
the movie was just fiction. What we need to discuss is right over
there." Again he pointed at the box.
"What's so special about that box?" asked the woman, who had been
tentatively identified as Kathie Perez, "and what do you want it for?"
"Ma'am. .. Sir. .. have you experienced anything unusual or
different in connection with that box?" asked D quietly.
The couple turned to each other and smiled broadly before giving
each other a quick kiss.
"Why, yes we have, agent D," replied the man and they both smiled
again. C thought they both looked like the Cheshire cat in Alice's
wonderland. "How did you know?"
"But you both look so normal," blurted out Agent C.
They both laughed and then Willow sighed and looked a question at
Thia, who nodded affirmatively with a small smile.
"Well my name is Willow now and this is to be my future wife, Thia.
We discovered each other just the other day and made a few changes
to make our life together a long and fruitful one."
"Could you tell us, what are some of the changes, besides the
obvious ones like your height and weight?" C asked.
Thia giggled, "Well you see, my husband to be, will need to sit to
pee and I can write my name in the snow." They both burst into
laughter again on seeing the expression on C's face.
"The boxes are devices from off world," D snapped, trying to regain
control of the conversation. "They are not toys for playing
games. They can be used to morph you into any shape that you can
imagine."
"Well if you know all that!" exclaimed Thia. "Why do you need our box?"
"We have been on the search looking for an active box for a long
time now. We have collected over 200 boxes so far but we haven't
been able to get them to work. It seems they have a time limit
of no more than 4 days, before they collaspe into their dormant
form like it is right now? D informed them quickly."
"Honey?" Thia turned to Willow with a question in her eyes.
"Please sir," Agent D, interjected interrogatively, "Can you tell
me how long ago it was since you first used the box?"
Willow looked at the clock on the wall, before closing his eyes and
counting in his head. "It was 3... ah, no...4 days about... an
hour ago." He confirmed, "Do you mean..." he started, before
trailing off.
D had his eyes closed as if in pain, C took over the conversation,
"Yes sir, I'm afraid it does," he affirmed
Agent C pulled his cell out of his and hit the number for the task
force. Asking for an ETA and being told it would be just a few more
minutes, he replied that there was no hurry since the expiration date
had passed.
Agent D then told the happy couple that if they didn't mind, the
agency would like to give them a complete physical. Plus they had a
discretionary fund that they could use to give the couple money for
purchase of the box.
"Really?" asked Thia, "How much is it worth?"
"Standard fee for a box is $50,000.00, though if you had a
functioning box, I expect you could ask for whatever you wanted."
"If we had a functioning box, we could have whatever we wanted
anyway," Willow mused. "Well it's probably for the good then. We
got what we wanted and then stopped before the wanting became more
than what we needed."
"AMEN" Was the thought in D and C's mind.
Epilogue
"Okay honey push. ... 1... 2...3... ," panted Thia. "One
more time sweetie, PUSH! !! "
"aaaaaAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH," it felt like it was tearing me apart. How
could having a baby hurt so much?
"THERE'S THE CROWN." The doctor shouted in her excitement, "I can see
the head now. Just one more push and it will be all over."
"ONCE more Willow, please for me," pleaded Thia.
I held her hand and tightened my grip as I tried to bear down one
more time. Then with a gush of fluid I couldn't see, I felt the
pressure ease off tremendously. I heard the doctor and the nurse
ooohhhing over the baby as they cleaned it up, then the nurse brought
our daughter over to me and placed her in my arms. Meanwhile the
doctor explained to Thia that it had been a textbook delivery and that
the baby would need some food soon.
The doctor's that examined us told me that I was already about
8 days pregnant. That was right about the same time that Thia and
I first made love when she changed her sex to a man. All my
precautions were just a few days too late.
With a despairing look at my pubescent breasts, the doctor tried
to convince us to allow her to send up a breast milk supplement
for the baby.
"That's alright Doctor," Thia assured her. "We have already made
previous arrangements."
