Jessica's POV
I wish I had just kept my big mouth shut. I thought that the signal that
the reporter would give, nine taps on the door in bursts of three, would
be enough. I didn't think that my phone had been tapped. After an hour I
heard them. Three taps, and then another three, and another three. I
opened the door and the man waiting outside grabbed me and pulled me out,
where another man in a white coat stuck a needle into my arm. I opened my
mouth to scream out what had happened to me, but my vocal cords would not
work above a whisper as they strapped me into a stretcher and loaded into
an ambulance. An ambulance? I wasn't sick.
The man who had lured me out said to me quietly, "Hello, Jessica. You've
been having delusions, haven't you? Delusions that you are a killer by the
name of Robert Vinal who, with your two murderous friends, killed a girl
by the name of Katie Garrett. And as punishment and to stop you
reoffending the state turned you into a girl, under a top secret program,
a program that never existed at all of course except in your head."
"I'll get my own back on you somehow," I managed to grunt. "I'll escape
and the story will reach the public if it take years."
"We're not taking you back to Meadowlands Asylum. We're taking you to
Broadmoor Hospital. That's where the worst, most twisted and most
dangerous of the criminally insane are sent. It's almost impossible to
escape from, and if you did manage to somehow get over the wall and reach
the press, there is no way they would believe the story of a babbling,
highly dangerous insane woman who has nothing to back up her claims. Most
likely they would ask you to wait and call the police and you would be
sent straight back to the asylum. You can tell the staff but they are used
to hearing the lies from their insane patients. The mad fantasise about
everything so your story, whilst original, would be nothing out of the
ordinary. Cause trouble and you can be injected with drugs and put in a
straitjacket."
"If we murdered you, the police would investigate and the press might take
an interest and there would be a chance however small that the truth would
get out. This is so more, convenient, don't you think?"
I began to cry as I realized that he was right. There was no chance that
anyone would believe my story now even if I did escape. I was well and
truely trapped.
Epilogue
Sergeant Howard was quickly shifted sideways to command a police station
in Kent. There was talk by those members in the Government who had started
up the secret experiment of forcibly changing the gender of certain
criminal offenders of taking some form of illegal action, but it came to
nothing as murdering him might have caused far more problems then it was
worth. They had to content themselves with quietly hampering his promotion
chances, and he still managed to become an Inspector before retiring at
the age of sixty-five.
Alexander MacKay was restored within weeks with male hormones and was
compensated quietly for what had happened to his gender on the condition
of his silence about Operation Princess. He refused to accept a new
identity, as was his right, as he was mentally scarred by what he had been
through and just wanted to live under his own name.
Employers refused to employ him and those people who he tried to befriend
wanted nothing to do with him because of his part in the killing of Katie
Garrett. He became depressed and took to the bottle, and was killed one
winter evening a year later in a hit and run. Some thought it was
vigilantes seeking revenge for the murder he committed aged ten, others
that he merely staggered into the road and was hit by a drunk driver who
didn't stick around. The alternative, that MI5 might have had a hand in
his death, was not even considered.
George Fletcher accepted the new name of David Evans after the male
hormones had restored his masculinity. He got a good job, stayed clear of
crime and found a girlfriend, and was able to put his past behind him.
Jessica McCann, who called herself Robert Vinal, died after four decades
in Broadmoor Hospital for the Criminally Insane. Only a few of the crazier
of her fellow patients ever believed her story that she was a male who had
been turned into a girl by Government agents. If the story ever did get
out beyond the walls, spread by an off duty doctor or nurse, the most it
might have become would be that of an urban legend, like those of Bigfoot
and flying saucers. Her boyfriend, when he went to find her, found all her
stuff missing and a typed note from her saying she was leaving him for
someone else with who she had been having an affair. Infuriated, he made
no attempt to find her.
Amber Foyle, because of the suspicious circumstances of her death, was not
cremated but was instead buried in a pauper's grave in case her body was
ever needed in evidence, something that never happened, and her diary
vanished mysteriously.
Operation Princess was officially terminated but there were rumours in
certain circles that may or may not be true, rumours that it was restarted
again with new safeguards and continues to this day.
