After being laid off from the factory, I remained totally unemployed for
about 6 months. Finally, I got a part-time job working at a local nail

My boss, Ms. Parker, was a little bossy. She made sure that I would clean

Well, one busy Saturday, a few of the girls did not show up for work. Ms.

that she asked me to let her train me to become a full-time manicurist at

So, I began my training. Her daughter, LaKeisha, was 19 years old, and
worked in the shop doing nails. She became my instructor, showing how to
do a full set of nails, pedicures, the whole nine yards. LaKeisha was
bossy like her mother, but she was a really good nail tech--so my training
went well. LaKeisha started calling me 'Dani' and I became sort of her
assistant. I liked working for/with her.
After about 6 months of training, I got my license. Now, I had a chance
to work full-time and make some real money doing mani-pedis. LaKeisha had
other plans for me. She wanted me to stay as her assistant rather than
building my own clientele. I would just work for her. She even insisted
that I start dressing like her. She got me an outfit of white capri
pants, a pink leotard type top, and some wedge type sandals. When I told
her it was way too feminine, she balked--and insisted that I wear the
outfit. She said it made me fit in with the other girls.
Working for LaKeisha was OK, but she continued to boss me around. I even
told Ms. Parker about it, but she said that I had to pay my dues like the
other girls. One day, LaKeisha had her boyfriend, Tyrone, come into the
shop. She made me give him a pedicure. Then, out of the blue, she told
Tyrone that I would stop by his apartment on Monday (my day off) to clean
his apartment. She said that Tyrone was a typical guy, and was terrible
at housework. I would be doing her a great favor by going over there to
clean up.
Since I did not have a car, LaKeisha picked me up on Monday and dropped me
at Tyrone's house. The door would be open, but he would not be home. She
told me to put on an apron and start cleaning. She would come by later to
inspect my work. She also told me to do his laundry--and to iron his
jeans and shirts. LaKeisha did not come by until about 2 in the
afternoon. I was done with most of the work. However, she told me to
stay until Tyrone got home.
Tyrone got home around supper time. He was thrilled with my efforts as a
maid. He said I was a great fringe benefit of having LaKeisha as a
girlfriend. For some reason, I was proud to serve him. It felt natural.
On Tuesday, I worked at the shop, doing 8 clients. LaKeisha said that I
would be Tyrone's maid every Monday from now on. I seemingly had no
choice in the matter.
LaKeisha continued to keep me as her assistant, even though I was ready to
go out on my own. She liked having me to boss around.
I was still having financial problems. As an assistant, I did not make
very much money. I could barely pay my rent. I got a lucky break when
LaKeisha decided to move in with Tyrone. They offered me a room for very

messy and hated housework. It would work out well for everyone.
Working full-time in the salon and then coming home to do housework was
tough. I was working 7 days a week. Tyrone and LaKeisha were very
demanding. They expected the house to be spotless. I spent long hours

laundry for me to do. She expected me to iron her lingerie--and if there
was one wrinkle, I would hear about it at the salon. The other girls
thought I was crazy to let them boss me around, but I had no choice. I
lived with them.
One day, Ms. Parker called me into her office. She said that from now on,
I would no longer be paid for my work. Her and LaKeisha would take care
of me--so it was pointless for me to be paid. In a way she was right.
They gave me housing, food, and clothes--so why did I need money? I was
OK with it, but it made me feel very vulnerable. I was in no position to
argue.
