Thomas grew up in Ayrshire, Scotland, the home area of the Great Bard

Tam was a pretty ordinary lad, with an older sister; but one bored day she
dressed him up in her clothes, and that kindled in him a yearning he could

from then on.
No-one can have failed to notice the dreadful depression we are in and
when Tam left school there were no jobs around; but his sister was a nurse
and told him that male nurses were always in demand as there were
proportionately so few of them, and she heard of a hospital thirty miles
away that was taking on trainee nurses. So Tam left home for the first
time to live in nurses' accommodation. There were a couple of other boys
on the course so they tended to stick together and do boy things. Tam had
always been a regular lad and did not intend to change. But something had
changed, he no longer had access to his sister's clothes and the yearning
to dress was slowly building up like a volcano. Working in a mainly
female environment with all the young pretty nurses in their little
uniforms and trendy young clothes was getting to him, and the more
feminine something was, the more it was calling to him. So, when it came
to study options he chose to do Obstetrics and Gynaecology. It was a
smallish old-fashioned hospital that tried to steer him instead into
Urology; but at the end of the day, equal opportunities meant they had to
let him do Gynae and Obs.
So Tam had shown up this morning at Gynae. Being a small friendly
hospital the Childrens' Ward workers wore informal clothes so as not to
spook the children; and the all-female workers on Gynae wore more old-
fashioned, more feminine uniforms as their patients felt more comfortable
that way. Yet here was Tam, male and trousered.
I mentioned the urges were getting stronger, more uncontrollabe. Tam had
been growing his hair. And yesterday at the supermarket he had succumbed
and bought a pair of black panties and a pair of black stockings which he
was now wearing underneath his other clothes.
The Staff Nurse showed him round the ward. In the female locker room
(they had no mens' one) she showed him the spare uniforms, explained how
they frequently had to change when they got blood or vomit on them but
regretted that they had no spare male uniforms, and requested he keep out
of there, lest he happened on females changing. Somehow he couldn't get
the locker room and its uniforms out of his mind that morning. The
volcano had been building since he left home and was now ready to explode.
Not very long after, actually, he was sat down with a cup of coffee...
As soon as the other nurses were out of site, he poured the coffee down
his front! He now needed to change his uniform, so before he could change
his mind he showed them what had happened, dashed into the the locker room
and donned the full female uniform. The Staff Nurse came bustling in, and
having to think on his feet, he told her that he was transsexual, that he
was really a girl, and that he would go and see Human Resources the next
day (Monday) to make it all official.
The ward team actually could not have been more supportive, but for the
rest of that day ~ and then for the rest of her life ~ Tammy reflected
with slight horror on what she had done, on the sequence of events she had
just set in place...
