Part 2: Damage check
As Matt began returning to her senses she could hear frantic voices all
around her.
"He's a freak, Craig, just like his father."
"You better have an explanation for all the damage around here. Look at
that hole in the ceiling!"
"He's not a freak, please step away, he needs to breathe."
Matt's sight focused on Steve's face. Aunt Mary stood right next to him,
a horrified look on her face. He could see Uncle Craig's back as he
argued with someone.
"Easy, mate. I know the feeling, take a moment to get back to reality."
"What... what's going on?" Matt's voice came out as a weak whisper.
"It appears you just went trough your Twist."
The world began to appear more coherent than a minute before and Matt
realized she - she? - was lying on her - her? - back on a mattress. Steve
put his arm around her as he helped Matt sitting up. Matt felt again
extremely weak. Was she really referring to herself as a "she"? She had a
bad feeling about this.
The room was a total mess. Furniture all around her was burnt and
scorched as if exposed to an intense heat, and a portion of the ceiling
had collapsed. The charred remains of paper sheets laid all around the
table, and she still held on the burnt remains of her pencil, now reduced
to a skeleton.
The first thing that hit Matt about her change was that everything looked
taller, as she was sitting lower than she used to.
"Now don't freak out, Matt. You've gone through a pretty dramatic
change," Steve said.
"Dramatic? He's a girl!" Aunt Mary blurted out.
Matt immediately looked down at herself, her worst fears confirmed.
The tattered remains of her clothes were barely able to conceal a small
frame.
Purple hair - her own hair - covered what could only be called breasts.
She moved a thin arm and looked in shock at a tiny, delicate hand.
Matt let out a high-pitched scream and collapsed against Steve, beginning
to cry quietly.
"Easy, easy there. Calm down. You'll get through this Matt." Steve held
him tightly against his shoulders. "Chelsea, call dad. Tell him to come
pick us up. Matt's going to need medical attention."
"Is it better now, Matt?" Steve asked after some time.
Matt sobbed and sniffed, but nodded. Steve helped her stand up.
"Sorry, I'm just so..." Matt began, her voice sounding high pitched and
somehow melodic. It could belong to a young girl.
Kate ran over to her side and hugged her. "I'm sorry. You'll sort it out
Matt."
It was only minutes later when the doorbell rang, and Kate opened the
door to let a man in. "Dad!" Chelsea said. The man was tall and athletic
and was carrying a handbag with him. He was Steve's father, Dr. Lawrence
Diamond.
Uncle Craig, who until moments before had been arguing with Kate, moved
over to the newcomer.
"I don't want any more of you freaks in my house!". However, the man
continued towards his son with a determined look.
"Is that Matt?" he asked Steve. "Yes, it's me," Matt answered. "How
convenient to have a doctor ready on your call, eh Steve?"
"Good. Move aside everyone, let me do my job. How are you feeling? If
you're in the mood for jokes you should be feeling better. Steve, please,
get me my stethoscope."
"I'm better, but it's been such a shock to find me... like this."
"I bet it was. Now be silent for a moment please, I'm going to listen to
your heart."

Matt was sitting on a couch in Steve's living room, covered in a robe she
borrowed from Chelsea. Steve's dad had quickly examined her and as soon
as he determined her life was not in danger, they all moved over to
Steve's place as it wouldn't have been wise to stay around Aunt and Uncle
at a time like this.
Steve, Kate and Chelsea were all present too. Janice, on the other hand,
preferred to go home and leave Matt some privacy.
"So, do you feel better?" asked Kate.
Matt nodded. "How bad's the damage?"
"Do you feel like seeing by yourself?"
"I think I can manage that, yes," she answered. Chelsea then led her to
her bedroom, where she had a full length mirror.
"Take as much time as you need. We'll wait in the living room," Chelsea
said before closing the door behind her, leaving Matt alone for the first
time since her change.
She was trembling when she faced the mirror, eyes closed. She then took a
deep breathe and looked.
In front of her was standing a girl with purple hair and wide, striking
violet eyes. She had a round face and a small, cute nose. The rest of her
figure was slender and dainty. Her breasts and butt were on the small
side, like those of a young girl still developing, but gave her a
definitely feminine look. She was short, probably shorter than Chelsea.
She looked like she couldn't be older than fifteen, and everything about
her just screamed "cute".
And she looked exactly the way Matt had pictured his character in that
night's game.
That reminded him that most of the time a Twist was triggered by some
intense or new experience and the transformation was linked to whatever
the person was thinking at the time.
Matt stood in front of the mirror, dazed, for what seemed an age as she
slowly adsorbed the notion that this beautiful, strange looking girl was
really her. She looked time after time at her hands, moved and turned
around trying to get a good look at her new body from every possible
angle. Still, a feeling of uneasiness kept building. Once she felt she
had enough Matt went back to the living room and, without a word, sat on
the couch again.
Steve's mother, a very short woman with pointed ears who looked just like
a Tolkien character, came over and handed Matt a cup.
"Have some tea, dear. It will help you feel better."
"Tank you Mrs Adele."
"You know" Steve began "Your Twist has been really messy. I know people
release a lot of heat and energy when they Twist, but I don't know if you
were supposed to shoot a light beam."
"Did I? Really?" asked Matt, amused.
"Yes! It started from the pencil you were holding and hit the ceiling,
blowing up the floor of the living room upstairs. You should have seen
the look on your uncle's face. He kept arguing with Kate that you
couldn't have possibly done that."
Matt smiled, then burst into laughter. "Yes I can imagine that. He must
have been scared as hell, thinking we were some kind of evil fiends."
Steve began to laugh too, followed by Chelsea. "I'm afraid I'll be banned
from playing RPGs ever again!" Matt continued.
"Yes! I know your uncle... It's good to see you laugh by the way," said
Steve. "You must be feeling tired. Since your room is ruined, you should
stay here for the night."
"Thank you Steve. I can stay on the couch."
"No way. You need a good night's sleep on a proper bed." Chelsea replied.
"I can sleep with Steve and you can stay in my bed."
"I think I will go back home then," Kate said, then she walked to Matt
and hugged her. She instinctively reached for her lips to kiss her, but
Kate moved aside, and Matt ended up kissing her cheek. She could see a
sad and frightened look in her eyes. "Everything will be OK" Kate said,
but she didn't sound convincing at all.
Matt took a last sip of tea, then followed Simon and Chelsea upstairs.
Chelsea hugged her before going over to Steve's room, and Matt couldn't
help but hugging him too. He then changed into some of Chelsea's clothes
and slipped in her bed.
Despite being extremely tired, she couldn't fall asleep. Something was
missing, she realized. Now that she was alone, she needed... comfort. She
had to hold onto someone for protection and affection.
A sudden sadness overwhelmed her. Was this person really her? Where did
all these feelings come from? The Matt she had been until mere hours
before would never have felt this way. Then why did this feel so...
normal?
She shook her head, then she did something she had not done since she was
a child.
She picked up a plushy from a shelf - a huge white bear. She went back to
bed and hugged it tightly.
And so, she finally fell asleep.
