"Mum, I just knew there was an ulterior motive behind getting me to grow
my hair long."
"I suppose it was a bit devious, Terry, but you know that your sister
wants you at her wedding - dressed as a girl."
"Mum!" exclaimed Terry.
"Yes, I know you prefer boys' clothes, boys' shoes and all that, but it
will please her," said Terry's mother, in a wheedling tone. "Go on, do it
for me - and her."
"But what if any of the guys from school see me? My life will be hell
then." Terry ran in abject fear of ridicule.
"They won't. The wedding is out of town."
"But we are going to the hairdresser here - and then? Nails?" Terry almost
screamed the word.
"Yes Dear," said Terry's mother almost absent-mindedly, "and a little bit
of makeup." Reluctantly, Terry went along with the plan. Mother always
knew best, always got her way in the end.
Back at home, and hour and a half later, Terry's mother laid out the
clothes: satin panties, a suspender belt - of all things - white stockings
with lace tops. "Go to the loo, first Dear. It'll be difficult once you're
fully dressed." There was wisdom in that, as Terry knew what was coming
next.
Back in the bedroom, Terry bowed to the inevitable, and item by item,
dressed in the bridesmaid's clothing.
"Oh God, Mother!" I'm being dressed up like a whore!"
"Now, now, Terry It's just for today. Anyway, where did you get that
language?" Terry ignored that.
But it was when she produced a bra that Terry saw red. "Mum! I'm flat a
pancake. What do I need a bra for?"
"Just the look dear. I've got these silicone fillers for you. You'll look
like a young woman." Terry submitted reluctantly, but catching sight of
the result in the mirror, it was time to concede defeat. "OK, Mum. The
overall effect is stunning, I'll give you that."
Finally it was time for the shoes. Terry had never worn anything quite so
high, but they were comfortable enough, and to be fair, they were needed
so the long bridesmaid's dress didn't drag along the ground, and the dress
with all its gauze underskirts and the floral lace bodice (and the
hairband with matching flowers and pearls) completed the picture. As Terry
didn't have pierced ears, the earrings had to be clip-on, but they didn't
hurt much, and they did complement the necklace and bracelet. In the
mirror, Terry saw a vision of loveliness gazing back out of the glass.
Terry's mother also looked, and was satisfied with what had been achieved.
It was worth every penny. "Oh, Terry, you look fabulous" was all she could
say. Up to a point, Terry had to agree. "Now don't you think that's better
than the scruffy tomboy clothes you've been wearing? Don't you think this
is much more appropriate for a girl, about to become a woman?"
For once in her eleven years, Teresa had to agree.
