The forum was bustling with people from all corners of the earth. On the
right the local farmers had set up their rickety stalls and were showing
their wares. Bundles of straw, varieties of wheat and flour, numerous
vegetables. Some had come to buy or sell their animals. Their sounds

birds, to the low rumble coming from bulls. The local section was
teeming with people of all births.
To the left, merchants were showing off their luxury wares, come as far
as from the Orient or even closer cities like Carthage and Alexandria.

many of noble birth. The trader reflects the client, is what they said
in these parts. The goods on display were amazing - luxurious pelts of
mysterious animals, concoctions in a variety of tiny flasks and bottles,
mixes of a thousand herbs, gold and silver trinkets, gems of all the
colours of the rainbow. The merchants were making their wares known by
yelling as far as their voice could carry:
"Ivory handles! All shape and size! Only from good merchant Ades Mbala!"
"Pelts for your lovely wife! Sure to satisfy!"
Compared to the local produce, there was less of it, and less people
even browsing it, but their splendour overshadowed the opposite end of
the square.
The top end of the square opened out to the Pantheon, temple for all
Gods. A legion of Roman troops was standing unmovingly on its perimetre,
making sure that trading didn't take part on the holy ground of the
opulent structure. Their shields were gleaming in the summer sun and on
all their faces one could see the gentle spray of sweat. Yet they stood
and made no move.
People of all nations were milling about on the square - Romans,
Venetians, Greeks, Egyptians, Moors, Turks, Persians - moving from stall
to stall, merhcant to merchant.
The largest crowd had gathered around the bottom end of the square,
though. There a wide wooden podium had been set up, around which a thick
throng of people were shouting out their offers. A squad of legionaires
was standing around the podium, but not to keep the people away, no.
Instead to prevent people on the podium from getting off.
Slaves. The slave market had always been the most exciting section of
the daily Roman marketplace. Aristocrats, nobles, generals of any worth,
richer merchants, even the poorer merchants were always looking for
labour. And what better workforce to find than slaves captured in the
last Roman conquest. The slave market handled many types of them - from
all nations, yes even Romans themselves, who had been declared slaves
for their crimes, but mostly still Carthaginians. There were children,
as servants and messengers, men of all ages for hard labour, skilled
professions, or even teachers, and women, as cooks, maids or courtesans.
It was women who were on display right now. Six of them were lined up on
the podium, barely a scrap on them, ankles and wrists bound. They were
trying to look down from shame, but the auctioneer ordered them to look
up, so that potential buyers may see their faces.
One of them, however, was bold in her own right and held her head high
and back straight. She was a Carthaginian girl, lightly tanned by the
North African sun, but no different than a Roman by features. Her skin
looked smooth in the midday sun, save for a few scars on her back and
arms: signs of a recent whippings. At a glance, her face was unassuming
in a way, but on a closer look one could spot a rare natural beauty in
her face. Her petite nose and lightly curved mouth gave her an innocent
girlish look, whereas the dark deep eyes with perfect eyebrows suggested
a more mature beauty. Her hair was jet black and straight and fell to
her lower back in tangles. She looked around 18, perhaps 17.
"A fine specimen, straight from Carthage 3 days ago, her name is Elia,
she can cook superbly and a gentlemen, I am sure she can please!"
The auctioneer gave a wink towards the nearest nobleman, as he was
explaining to the crowd the Carthaginian girl.
"Price begins at 20 silvers!"
As the auctioneer was taking offer, Elia noticed a man to the right of
her, an aristocrat in his finest livery. He was nearing middle age, but
had kept his shape youthful and and his face still clean-shaven. His
grey hairs, however gave off an aura of experience, wisdom and maturity.
For a moment the nobleman's and Elia's eyes met. For a split second the
girl's mouth twitched upwards suggestively and she gave a brief wink.
The man was taken aback, but as the moment passed, he became more and
more enticed with her.
He bought her. It had been a steep price - nearly 400 silvers - but the
nobleman was pleased with his purchase. He was a senator afterall, he
could buy whatever he wished. If need be, he could simply steal some
money from the empire's coffers. And awhat better way to spend such a
sum, than to purchase such a fine girl as one of his courtesans.

Back at the senator's mansion Elia was taken to the servants' quarters,
so she could be fitted with a suitable gown. Her new master was eager to
try her out. The helpful maids had found her one of senator's late
wife's gowns - a fine one-piece gown of lace and golden trimmings. It
flowed from her shoulders to her ankles, concealing what was beneath,
but exposing her back and arms. Her hair and pubic area was also dealt
with, the former washed and brushed, and the latter shaved. Elia was shy
and blushed when the maids fluttered around her. She had felt very

her employer, Brutus, can secure his position in the senate, and she
would be a lot wealthier.
She hurried towards the stable that was situated half a mile along the
road, where she had placed all the rest of her things. As she stepped
in, she tore off her red wig and opened a seam under her neck, at the
