The day had started with my best friend Dave taking me to a department
store to get clothes for a Halloween party. Dave had the idea that we'd
go the the party as the celebrity couple, David Copperfield and Claudia
Schiffer. Dave was going to be the magician Copperfield, and I was to
be Schiffer. For Dave, it was going to be easy, since he was a handsome
guy with fabulous black hair, and he liked to do magic tricks, so he
already had a hat, and a cape, and a wand. For me, though, it seemed
like quite the challenge to try to look like one of the world's most
famous super models. True, I was tall and thin like Shiffer, and I
already had long blonde hair like her, but unlike her, I was a him.
David dropped me off at my house just after dark, he stopped the motor
so we could sit and talk another minute. "Thank you, David," I said,
turning toward him, "It was fun today."
"Yeah, it was," he said, turning and putting his arm up over the back of
the seat. The way he looked at me I thought maybe he was going to kiss
me. I waited, my lips tingling, David leaned forward, his hand went
behind my head. I froze, then he pulled a quarter out from behind my
ear, holding it in front of me. "How'd that get there?" he said with a
laugh." "You got me," I sighed.
"So, anyway. I have to work after school tomorrow," I said, "so, see ya
in a couple days, huh?"
"Yeah," David said, and he gently brushed my hair from the side of my
face, "thanks for doing this, I can't wait for Saturday."
"Me neither," I said, getting out of the car.
David waited till I got in the house. I looked out as he pulled away.
My mom and dad were in the kitchen; I left my shopping bag in the hall,
and went in to join them.
"Hey," I said, sitting down at the table.
"Hi, Danny," mom said, "are ya hungry?"
"I had a burger earlier, but I could eat." I said.
Mom got me a plate and loaded it with a pork chop, mashed potatoes, and
peas and carrots.
"Thanks, mom," I said, smiling at her.
She looked at me, "Danny, are you wearing lip stick!" she said, a little
shocked, "and eye liner!"
My dad lifted his head to look at me.
"Oh, yeah," I said, "I was getting ready for the Halloween party."
I explained about the house party Dave and I were going to, and how Dave
had the idea of us going like David Copperfield and Claudia Schiffer,
and how Dave's sister, Diana, helped me get a dress and shoes.
"So, you're going to this party as a girl?" my dad asked.
"Well, yeah, as Claudia Schiffer, the model." I said.
My mom sat back down in her chair, "so, you were shopping today for
clothes for your Halloween party?"
"Yeah, at the department store where David's sister works. She's a
manager there" I said, starting to eat. "This is really good, mom,
thanks!"
"You're welcome, Danny," mom said. "So, Dave's sister helped you pick
out a dress and shoes, and then she helped you with makeup, too?"
"Well, yeah," I explained, "Diana was great. I needed the makeup so I
wouldn't look weird walking around the store in a dress."
"This is getting interesting!" my mom said. "Tell us more!?"
'Well," I started, "I had to try on the clothes in the dressing room.
Diana made sure there weren't any other women in there. The dress fit
pretty good, but then we realized I needed shoes, so we walked over to
the shoe department, which was all the way across the store." I put a
fork of carrots, peas, and mashed potatoes into my mouth.
"Hmm?" mom said. "So then you got shoes?"
"Yeah, heels," I said.
"Well, I'm not surprised about that. You wore my heels all the time
when you were a b... a child," mom said.
"Can you believe this about your son?" mom turned to dad.
"Well, he's too skinny for football," my dad said with a grin.
"I just can't get over this," mom said. She didn't sound angry, just
sort of amused.
"So, tell me about the dress and heels you picked out," she said,
turning back to me.
"Oh," I said, "it's from a magazine picture, in Esquire. Let me show
ya," and I went to get the magazine from my bag. I noticed my mom's
eyes glance at my breasts when I got up from the table.
I came back and showed mom the picture we were trying to copy, "It was
David's idea, because he's a magician, sort of, so he wanted to be
Copperfield, and David thought, somehow, that I could be Schiffer." Mom
showed the picture to dad. "Wow," dad said, raising his eyebrows.
"These are very sexy clothes, Danny," mom said, "are you really wearing
a dress like this to a party?"
"Well, yeah. It's a costume party," I said, trying to play it down.
It got quiet for a minute while mom looked at the pictures, then my dad
spoke up, "remember that time I dressed up like a woman for a Halloween
party? It was at Doctor Hanson's house, remember?"
"Of course I remember," mom said, "you went around acting like Mae West
all night. It was crazy, but it was a fun night."
"It was," dad agreed, "and it was even more fun when we got back home,
as I recall!"
"Stop!" my mom said, blushing.
"How old are you, Danny, 17?" dad went on, like he was thinking out
loud, "yeah, that party was 17 years ago."
We all got quiet thinking about it. I had been conceived on a night
when my dad had dressed up as Mae West for Halloween, and now, 17 years
later, I was going to a Halloween party dressed as Claudia Schiffer.
"Funny the way things happen," my dad said, putting his dishes in the
sink, and heading out to the living room.
"Danny," my mom said quietly, looking at me, "I didn't want to say
anything with your father here, but I noticed you're wearing a bra," she
said, moving closer to me. I could tell we were about to have a more
serious conversation.
"Um, yeah, mom," I said. "I got a bra and panties to go with my dress,"
I admitted. "I couldn't wear that dress with my briefs," I added.
"That's for certain!" she said, looking back at the magazine. "That
dress would barely cover your underwear, your panties."
I nodded. "So Diana got me this stuff," I said, indicating my bra and
panties with a wave of my hands.
"And then, what about your legs? You must have shaved them, right?" mom
wanted to know.
So I told her about Diana getting me the electric razor so I could shave
my legs in the dressing room.
Mom leaned back in her chair. "A dress, shoes, a bra and panties -
lingerie," she waved her hand adding emphasis to the word lingerie, "and
an electric razor...Danny, that's not a cheap department store. How
much are you spending?"
I explained that Diana was using her discount, and that David insisted
on paying the rest.
"So, David is buying you a dress and shoes?" mom said, accenting David.
"Well, I offered to pay, but it was all his idea, so he wanted to pay,"
I tried to explain.
"Danny," mom said, "I just can't help thinking there's more to this than
a Halloween party."
I looked down at my plate, knowing what she was talking about, but not
knowing what to say about it.
"If you were my 17 year old daughter, and a boy bought you a dress like
that, and shoes, I'd be sitting you down and having a talk with you."
mom said.
"It kinda sounds like you ARE having a talk with me, mom," I said,
trying not to sound sassy.
"I know your father had that father/son birds and bees talk a couple
years ago, but now I'm wondering if we need a mother/daughter talk." she
looked at me seriously.
I tried to hide my smile when she referred to me as her daughter, but I
was sure she saw it.
"You know, Danny, a dress like that will get you a lot of attention,"
mom said, "how did you feel wearing it, and walking around the store
with people seeing you?"
"Um, well," I had to think, "Well, at first I was nervous, but then it
was okay," I said.
"Did you feel like a boy in a dress, or did you feel like a girl?" mom
pressed on.
A weird thing happened to me then, and for some reason I just started
crying. I knew the answer was too complicated, and that I simply
couldn't explain what had happened to me.
My mom put her arm around me, patting my back almost like she was
burping me. "It's okay, Danny," she said, "we can talk when you're
ready."
I felt better, and sucked up my tears. "I'm sorry, mom. Gee, I'm
embarrassed!" I said.
"It's okay, Danny," mom said, "I love you as much as any mother has ever
loved her child. I'm here for you, and I support you."
"I love you, too, mom," meaning it as much as I've ever meant it.
Mom brushed at my hair, "we've got to do something about this," she
said. "I could cut it, clean up your ends, but I think I should take
you to a stylist." I was looking at her, and feeling so happy and lucky
that she was my mom. She held my hand, patting it for comfort, "we'll
have your nails done, too." she added, "we'll have the salon file them
and trim your cuticles, and they can put on a clear finish, that won't
get noticed at school. You can add red polish Saturday before your
date, your party. How's that sound, Danny?"
I was choked up with thoughts and emotions, "it sounds great, mom,
thanks!" was all I could get out.
"Let's clean the dishes," mom said, "then, if you want, we can go
upstairs, and I'll show you a few things about make up."
"Gee, that'd be great, mom!" I said, and jumped up, taking our plates to
the sink.
I felt so great knowing my mom was there for me, no matter what the road
ahead might bring.
We chatted all through washing the dishes. It occurred to me that this
wasn't my first girl moment with my mom, but it was the first since my
new self-awareness. After the dishes we went upstairs like mom said,
and she brought a few makeup things to my bathroom, showing me about eye
shadow, and liner, and rouge.
Mom put some blue shadow on my eye lid. She said I already had nice
long lashes, but she had me stroke on a little mascara to make the stand
out; I had fun fluttering them and looking at myself. We both laughed.
I have high cheek bones, mom said, but she showed me how to brush on a
little pinkish power to highlight them. Then we lined my lips to make
them look fuller, and mom showed me the right way to apply lip stick.
"Nothing beats good old red!" mom said, and I agreed completely.
Then I remembered I had some homework to do. "You can leave your makeup
on while you study," mom said, "but you'll have to take it off and apply
lotion after that."
I nodded.
"Good girls never go to bed with their makeup on," she added smiling.
I felt so great all through my homework, picking up my mirror every few
pages to look at myself. I was done in an hour or so, and I knew I
needed to get cleaned up and into bed, but I couldn't resist walking
downstairs first to get a glass of water. Dad was still in the living
room watching TV when I came out of the kitchen; I said good night from
the foot of the stairs, half hoping he would come over and see how great
I looked.
Then I did like mom said, wiped off my makeup, took a warm shower, put
lotion on my face and legs, and got into my pajamas. I fell asleep
feeling beautiful, and thinking what a great day this had been.
"Wake up, sleeping beauty!" I opened my eyes to see my mom opening my
curtains, then patted on my bed. I looked at the clock; it was 7:30. I
fluttered my eyes open as my mom left my room. I lifted my head, and
saw my new dress on the closet door hanger. Assured that yesterday had
not just been a dream, I pulled off the covers and slipped out of be. I
dressed for school, jeans and shirt like usual, but I sort of hated
putting on my drab white briefs, thinking how much better I'd feel in
panties.
Downstairs, mom had juice, toast, and eggs waiting for me.
"I called the salon, and Karen, my stylist, Karen, said she can fit you
in this morning at 8, so we need to get going," mom said while sipping
coffee. "Take your books, and I can drop you at school when you're done
at the salon."
I ate quickly, grabbed my backpack, and went with mom out to the car.
"You'll like Karen," mom said, backing out of the driveway, "she's
young, twenty something, and very up on modern fashion."
"Does she do your hair, mom? your hair always looks great!" I said.
"Thank you, Danny," she said. "Yes, Karen does my hair, but I usually
just go to her on special occasions."
"Gee, I'm really lucky I get to see her now, then," I said.
"Your party is a very special occasion, Danny," mom said. "I told her
about your party, by the way. I hope you don't mind."
"Sure mom, no problem," I said, "otherwise she'd be wondering."
"Danny," mom said, looking over at me, "I told Karen that there may be
more to it than just a party."
"What ya mean, mom?" I asked, realizing that mom had slipped back to the
serious talk we started last night.
"Danny," mom said slowly, carefully, "I feel that you are experiencing a
new gender awakening. Like you are becoming aware of your feminine
side."
I sat silently looking straight ahead at the road.
"I hope you don't feel like I'm pushing you, Danny," mom said, "but I
don't want you to feel like I'm neglecting you, either."
"Thanks, mom, I appreciate you're helping me," I said.
"Besides," mom added with a grin, "it's fun helping you girl out!"
We reached the salon and went in. Mom introduced me to Karen, who was
an absolutely gorgeous tall, thin, redhead, maybe mid-twenties, with a
beautiful and friendly smile.
"So nice to meet you, Danny!" Karen said, holding out her hand.
"Nice to meet you, Karen," I said, smiling uncontrollably as Karen's
eyes caught mine.
"So, you're going to a party, how fun!" Karen said, "well I'm very happy
that I get to do your hair for the event." Karen seemed as cool a
person as I'd ever met. She looked at her appointment book, and said
"oh, so you're getting a manicure and pedicure, too! Jackie will be
doing that for you; she should be here in a few minutes."
Mom thanked Karen, and went over to the waiting area.
Karen let me to a styling chair. "So, Danny, " Karen started off, "
when your mom called and said her son was going to a party as Claudia
Schiffer, I was thinking, yeah, good luck a guy looking like her! But
now that I see you, it's so easy to imagine. You have great features,
and I think you'll make a great Claudia look-alike."
It would be really hard to not like Karen, especially when she was
giving out all these compliments. I was really in to her talking, which
she did while brushing and analyzing my hair.
I watched in the mirror as Karen worked at my hair. She'd have me flip
my head this way, then that way, as she trimmed and brushed. I could
see the mess of my long hair turning into something glowing and pretty.
"You do great work, Karen!" I said, amazed at how she was making me
look.
"Thank you, Danny," she said, "I have other transgender customers, and I
really enjoy helping you.
I think my mouth was hanging open when she said "transgender." I hadn't
really heard or thought about that term, but now I was fixated on it.
"Oh, I'm sorry Danny," Karen said, looking genuinely apologetic, "I
didn't mean to imply that YOU are, I mean, transgender. I know it's
just a party. I was getting carried away."
Karen combed my hair over the side of my face. I looked at her and
smiled. "It's okay, Karen. I guess I get what you mean. I'm sort of
getting used to the idea anyhow. Mom was kind of talking to me about
that last night."
Karen had a relieved smile, and then she gave me a girl hug. I couldn't
believe how great it felt.
Karen finished up, and mom paid her, and they both had me turning around
to see how pretty I looked. Then Karen told me to come back any time,
and that she would love to see me all dressed up for my party. Then mom
said, "you should come over and see her before her date!" And Karen was
excited, and said she would come by, and I was happy too, beyond words,
but not believing that I'd just been called "transgender" by my
hairdresser, and "her" by my mother. Not to mention that for the second
time my mom referred to the party as my "date."
We were having this wonderful girl fun time when the other girl, Jackie
showed up to do my nails. So then it was off to a table to have my
fingers done, then in a chair to do my toes. Jackie was very fast, and
had strong hands. She massaged my feet and up my calves in between
trimming my toe nails. I got to admire my fingernails, which she had
shaped with a file, trimmed my cuticles, and brushed on a coat of flat,
clear primer. She primed my toes, too, and then I was done.
Mom paid Jackie, and drove me off to school.
"Mom, I..." I paused, not finding the words to say before I got out of
the car in front of my school.
"I'm happy for you, Danny," she said with a loving and understanding
smile.
"I love you, mom."
"And I love you, Danny."
I walked toward the school, and turned to see mom still looking at me.
Suddenly I wished that I could be mom's actual daughter, and that I
could be a real girl. I turned again to the school, knowing that I had
to be a boy for now, for a while.
"A pretend boy," I thought to myself, accepting my fate with a new
confident smile.
