June 3rd, 2016 STAR League headquarters, Providence, RI Morgan had a restful sleep after cooking for the STAR Leaguers as a thank you to them for their help in both protecting her and testing her powers. She knew that she'd have to leave soon as little else could be learned from her powers and her father, Daniel Pine, would be looking for her there soon enough. She spent much of the morning formulating a plan of attack with the team. He'd attack that night just after dusk, it was the best possible time as the team was seen as vulnerable as their brick and energizer were elsewhere on an important mission helping Speed Queen, Skyhawk, and Dynaman with several low-level crimes happening at the same time overwhelming the area. It wasn't a coincidence, it was exactly what she predicted would happen. The only thing worse would be if Lamplighter got involved in the Boston situation causing the entire team to respond north. Daniel wasn't that lucky, Lamplighter wasn't one to get too involved in major villainous activities and Daniel would have to have a juicy carrot to lure him out - which he didn't have at this time. The team had an "ace in the hole" - their reserves were on duty that evening, with each hoping to meet the young lady that was the talk of the team the past three weeks. Magma, Lightwave, and Linebacker were there to help and had to hide their grins as they all looked at one another over how the team was treating Binary as if she was one of them even if she was just a guest. Magma, a pyromanifester, fought saying something to Tabby Cat and Soldier Of Fortune while the gruff and burly Linebacker complained that they were going to upset their kids over the group thinking about their children having babies soon. The third reservist to stick around to "help", Lightwave, just acted like it was no big deal but had to grin as the others rolled their eyes at her acting like it was nothing yet was extremely interested in seeing Morgan's talents for herself. Given that Soldier Of Fortune, her husband, had spent a lot of time around Morgan, she wanted to meet her in person. The plans were gone over and looked at closely to the point of everyone knowing their places and what would happen by heart. Morgan insisted that she was not the real target, she was just a diversion and the real target was the armory where her father's weapons were stored. They were all non-functional and it was ensured by Morgan that none of them would be usable again due to intentional design flaws that she had created in them that her father overlooked that she put to use disabling all in seconds. Morgan made one last run through the weapons and ensured that all had safety devises attached that could only be removed by a devisor, which Soldier Of Fortune confidently assured her was tough to do as it was. Morgan wasn't confident, her father could find a way and may just build a new one since he had the design already and only needed the actual weapons for visuals rather than working models. The trio of newcomers watched in awe as Morgan breezed through the inventory and ensured all of the weapons were secure to the point of being obsessive. When she was finished she willed her nanites to create armor for herself so she could be ready for anything, which caused all to gasp in shock as the nanites flowed out of her skin and looked like she was dipped in liquid metal, covering her fully from head to toe in a metal coating. As soon as she finished her little show for the newcomers, the attack started. The attackers were a group of hired villains who had a grudge against the team for various reasons. One was a brick whose powers made him into a human fortress, one was a devisor who was insanely jealous of Soldier Of Fortune and who coveted Soldier Of Fortune's designs for his own, while another was a speedster. Blockhouse was a tough to move and hard to hurt brick who had the special ability to use his special psychokinetic(PK) shell to anchor himself to the ground so he couldn't be moved allowing him to take hit after hit with little damage. He did have one major drawback, he was vulnerable to light and heat attacks as he still needed to see and breathe, which most didn't realize but the team knew about already. Morgan was impressed at the team's files on him, but he had encountered them many times before. Joining Blockhouse was Whirl, a speedster whose specialty was quick hits and distractions. She often was the one who initiated attacks on targets and caused chaos during fights as she created confusion among teams as they couldn't hit her without hitting their own people. She was fast but she always had a pattern in her running so you could fire at where she would be and hit her when she came by, taking her down and out of the fight but not before she had caused enough of a distraction to get things done. The third and final supervillain in the attack was the most unassuming member of the group. He was a devisor named Glorious who was insanely jealous of Soldier Of Fortune's weapons and sought to steal his designs for himself to create his own knock-offs. His problem was that he was a low-level devisor who suffered from Deidrick's Syndrome and whose obsession often caused him to lose focus of the fight and make major errors that caused his colleagues to have to cover for him. They were the toughest ones. Whirl caused issues with the defense systems as they couldn't get a lock on her as she ran at an eye-opening speed that was able to avoid the various traps laid in front of her. Tabby Cat took her time and let her get her pattern established then had her in her sights and would take her out on her own, only she could battle the speedster thanks to her own special abilities allowing her to get to certain vantage points and leap far enough to get her as she turned a tight corner. Coming in late in an attempt to catch the group off guard and fully involved was an energizer named Buffer who created barriers that allowed Blockhouse to attack then stay still while the others went to work. He could move quickly but took too long at times to get a proper field up yet was able to do a lot in such little time. Buffer taunted the team, but training and experience drowned it out. He would tire from creating his barriers so quickly and needing to reinforce them as Linebacker pounded away at them, while Magma was able to heat Blockhouse causing him to lose concentration allowing Linebacker to slip through as Magma went at Buffer. Their teamwork was stronger than the villains' leading to both being defeated. With the three toughest ones in custody all eyes turned to Glorious, who used his devises to hold off the team while Soldier Of Fortune set-up his own devices to battle him It was all a diversion as Lightwave hit him from behind while he was focused on Solider Of Fortune. The poor man was in the middle of a Deidrick's episode and never noticed he was unprotected, allowing Lightwave to knock him out easily. Morgan focused on the one who was a threat to her. Included in the group who came with Buffer was a magic user name Mana who tried to send multiple spells against her but her reflexes allowed her to get out of the way in time and shift to her Binary disguise to fight back. Her new nanites recognized the spells and kept her in motion so she didn't get caught by any of them while biding her time before she could hit him at close range with a shock which would disrupt his concentration giving her a chance to do her own damage to him in the form of some quick hits to knock him out. Mana was tough to deal with but he was arrogant. She kept at him and got him to make a mistake, jumping over him them backhanding him. He was knocked out cold, much to his humilation. The battle was fierce, Daniel Pine waited for his moment to act before slipping inside to get what he wanted. It was as Morgan had expected, he went right for the armory and stole his weapons as well as a few of the less-secure weapons that the team had ignored and not considered in a long time. The more he moved the more it was clear that he was stealing specific weapons and not just grabbing everything, ignoring more devastating weapons in favor of weapons that were known to be used by specific villains who lost against the STAR League over the years. Binary was receiving all of this via her nanites as she was battling Mana, thanks to their integration with the league's computer system telling her what was going on with the nanites translating the data for her. She blurted out to Tabby Cat, "He's going for Master Blaster's rifle, Khaos' power cane, and Ms. Manic's handheld Gatling guns. He's not here for his stuff, he's robbing you for them!" That turned the tide as the remaining villains started to fallback to get away from the area while they still could. The team gave chase, while Binary held down the fort for them at the bas. She had complete control over their defenses and used it to her advantage by taking out the goons who were trying to plant explosives to destroy the walls and break open their front door so more goons could enter. She was so engrossed in trying to defend against outsiders that she never heard nor felt the presence in the room with her until it was too late. When he was close enough the nanites told her to turn her head, leading her to see the face of a man who had wronged her for so many years, a man who resented her very presence in his life. Daniel Pine was standing before her. Binary was unsure what to do. She wanted to fight him but her heart ached for her father's attention. He had no hesitation though, he struck her and loudly yelled, "You little freak!" hitting her in the face and leaving a small red mark from the impact. Before he could strike again, her armor activated in a split second. He hit her head and bounced off, the armor protected her from the impact while it also stunned him to the point of yelling at the top of his lungs in pain, with his hand and arm showing a burn mark where his hand struck the armor and slid on to her shoulder. It wasn't just a burn, it was one word: "Betrayal." Daniel screeched in pain and ran off, but first told Binary, "I'll get you. He can't protect you forever. You are my ticket to the big time and I'll ensure he pays for what he did to me! He can't protect you!" Daniel was fighting tears as he screamed that, running off with his bounty while his goons kept him out of harms way. He fought agonizing pain as his burn throbbed. Binary's nanites were embedded into his hand, he was marked by her without her knowing why they had done it but glad that they had. He was too far out of range but the nanites would survive and wait until he returned to go after her a second time. She needed to get away and fast. She secured the base, left a note, then ran off away from the base while keeping out of sight of anybody who might be observing the base. She ran for 20 miles northeast away from Providence before she had to stop and relax, he body aching and feeling the impact of the strain on her arms and legs from the long run. She was in the middle of the woods, somewhere in Norfolk County, MA by her estimation based on the distance and heading, and among rural farms where nobody would notice her being there for the night. It was the perfect place to stop and spend the night, with no hope of anyone disturbing her. She found an old barn and quietly climbed into a hayloft, being sure to not make a sound while keeping an eye out for any potential trouble. The animals seemed to sense her presence yet didn't make a sound, allowing her to quietly fall asleep and let her body recharge from her trying day. ----------------- June 4th, 2016 a small farm in Plainville, MA Binary awoke to the sounds of someone entering the barn. She kept as quiet as possible but she heard a woman call out, "I know you are awake, I can hear your breathing change. I heard you last night so you don't have to hide any longer. I won't hurt you, there's no point hiding anymore." Binary moved out until she was visible to the woman. She looked over Binary with an intense glare, as if she was examining her for potential danger before ignoring her to do what she needed to do. Binary tried to slip away but the woman loudly told her, "Stay put, you aren't leaving yet." Binary froze, the woman had some kind of power over her that her nanites couldn't counter. It was as if her mind was trying to do one thing while her body did another. She waited for the woman to finish milking the cow and gathering eggs from her chickens. The woman led Binary inside her house and sat her down, insisting that she ate as she clearly needed to eat as she looked like she hadn't eaten in a while. She ate what she was given, with Binary happy to get the nourishment as her nanites recharged almost immediately. The juice helped a lot as well, the woman watched and tried to hide her grin as Binary clearly looked like she enjoyed it and even relaxed her armor to the point that it receded back inside her body. When both were finished, the woman explained to her, "Like you, I am a mutant. My codename is Daisy. I own this farm and try to keep to myself out here so don't get too many visitors. You weren't as quiet as you thought you were, the animals heard you and were up in arms until I calmed them down. It's why they left you alone last night, you needed your rest as you were clearly running from something. You aren't the first kid to run away from home after manifesting, lord knows I have seen a few who did. My own daughter tried to do that but I managed to convince her that she was gong to be alright and sent her to a special school where she could understand her new powers." Daisy asked Binary who she was. Binary tried to lie but the woman told her, "I'm an empath who can feel your emotions. I know you are a mutant, baselines don't have metal armor that melts into their skin in a matter of seconds. I can't let you go if you are going to be hurt, I just want to help you." With a deep sigh, Binary explained, "I'm Binary. I won't tell you my real name because I don't want you to be hurt because of me. I'm trying to get to Boston to get away from my father. He's trying to use me to build weapons for a powerful supervillain who wants to destroy Boston. I can't let that happen. I know who he is going to contact and need to get to them before he does." Daisy grew upset as she felt Binary was telling the truth while also feeling pangs of a long forgotten pain that she wished to never feel again; she didn't try to hold Binary there any longer, she needed to get to Boston as fast as possible. Daisy told her to get into her truck, she'd drive them as it was too important to wait and she didn't want Binary to burn her energy running. It was a genuine offer and one that Binary accepted, with Binary relaxing the entire hour-long drive to the city. ---------------- June 4th, 2016 South Boston, MA Daisy stopped in the middle of the South Boston industrial area, letting Binary out and offering her a hug of support before letting her go on her way. When Binary was safely out of hearing distance, she called the STAR League to let them know that Binary was in Boston and trying to stop her father, with the team thanking her for caring for Binary even if Daisy hated to get involved with other mutants. Daisy sighed and wished Binary luck. She really hoped that Binary succeeded, she didn't want her own father to get involved in the business. There was no way that her father would stop himself if he knew that the pact between the local supervillains and superheroes to leave Boston alone was broken, it was his legacy and he took that legacy seriously. Binary kept out of sight as much as possible as she moved closer to her target: the abandoned Tremont Street Tunnel. It was her father's bunker in Boston and the one place they he would have to go to to get away from the heat of Lamplighter, Skyhawk, Dynaman, Speed Queen, the STAR League and the villains who would be after him for late payments for their services Daniel was smart, he wouldn't go directly there. Thankfully for her, she had a couple of days there before he arrived to set up camp while he licked his wounds, made his trade to Khaos, Master Blaster, and Ms. Manic finalized, then built a framework of support to get at Binary for harming him in such a horrific manner. ------------------------ June 4th, 2016 an abandoned automotive garage, Fall River, MA Daniel Pine relaxed in his hideout while his hired thus stood watch in case his child told the STAR League where he was at. He had to dig deep into his roster of safehouses to come up with this one. It fit his needs and would suffice for a few days while he considered his next options and plotted his next move. He had to wait for the heat to die down, he couldn't go to Boston just yet. The safehouse was not what it appeared. It was abandoned for years and looked like it was falling apart but it was really sturdy and could withstand a pounding from even the toughest brick. After a long ago battle with Linebacker, he ensured that every one of his safehouses could withstand his assault. He relaxed and enjoyed a quiet meal, letting the excitement of the day leave him. He hated that he lost some of his best hirees but Mana was utterly useless most of the time, Blockhouse was only good for so long as the heroes didn't realize his faults, and Whirl was just to predictable. None of them were worth a damn in the heat of battle yet they served their purpose well most of the time. His arm constantly throbbed. His burn seemed to glow whenever he looked at it, with nobody but him able to see the glow yet it was bright to him. He'd get Binary for what she had done to him, he would get his child back even if he had to kill her for the humiliation. His child was a mutant. Morgan was what he feared more than anything in the world. The skinny, meek kid was going to be better, stronger, faster, smarter than him and didn't even need any mutant abilities. But to be a mutant too? That was a hue blow to his ego that he couldn't let slide. Morgan had changed and he hated it. Morgan was clearly feminine and may even be a full female, a crime in Daniel's eyes that needed to be punished. He could accept his son becoming a mutant, but he couldn't live with his son becoming his daughter even if it wasn't his choice. He would get back at Morgan. He, no she, needed to pay. Daniel would ensure that she would get her just desserts and paid the ultimate price for disobeying him and helping heroes stop his onslaught. -------------------------- June 4th, 2016 Abandoned Tremont Street Subway The bunker was just what you'd expect: a dirty, damp, musty place that had been abandoned since the 1960s when the subway was abandoned. She had upgraded it to be livable for a short period of time thanks to lighting and a computer, but it was still a tough place to live for more than a few days. Its biggest advantage was that it was hidden in plain sight: below a park, accessible by an abandoned church, and known to only a few but not bothered with by all. It was perfect for their needs for when the duo were forced into hiding due to her father's deals, hiding out there for a couple of dayss while the heat died and they could move on to a "better" location elsewhere in the area. Her old computer system was operational and she could easily use it to get any information that she needed thanks to it being hot-wired into the church's broadband line. There was information about the battle at the STAR League's base and names of the villains involved and who was hurt. Thankfully, no member of the STAR League was hurt while the villains suffered several minor injuries. Her father wasn't mentioned, it was as if he was purposely kept out of the mentions. It was obvious that he was being protected by someone, but a closer look at who he knew and what they held in terms of that kind of power was hard to figure out. Then it hit her: he was the power behind the power. It made sense, he was a manipulator and had built-up a large number of contacts in the industry. He was the constant factor in the villain troubles around Boston and knew who to go to and who to bribe to get out of any trouble and making trouble for those who were threats to him. He played the part of the low-level gadgeteer, but he was really a brilliant tactician who had caused the whole of Boston to start to work to his advantage. He used Binary as a pawn to get what he needed and to give himself a boost to finally consolidate power behind himself. His big flaw was that he had Binary to work against him, something that had to have caused his reaction back in Providence as he realized that his plan has just started t fall apart right as it was starting to unfold. Binary started to think deeply about the whole situation and put pieces of the puzzle together. Daniel was a manipulator who knew who to go to and at what time to get them to do as he needed while also going against their rival to get what he needed from them. He played chess with the Boston underworld and was starting to win the game but he couldn't declare victory until Binary was taken out of action. The assault by the MCO and STAR League were all part of his plan, as was Binary staying with the STAR League for her own safety. He manipulated the entire situation but he couldn't account for Binary manifesting as a mutant after the raid and helping the STAR League during the assault. She was always his Achilles Heel, the one thing that could go wrong in his plans and often did go wrong - the one who wouldn't let him get away clean. She had to plot out who she could trust and who she knew would betray her. The list was long but she had been around so many of them for so long that she knew the real people and what they would do to her if given half a chance. It wasn't ideal, but it was for the sake of thousands. The list was short for who to trust vs. who would betray her. There were a dozen local villains who had owed her favors and who she could give legitimate help in exchange for information. They were some of the true powers behind the underworld, with strict neutrality rules and followed the Taurus system. She sought out the closest person, a mutant restaurant owner by the name of "Squeaky". Squeaky was called that as he squeaked whenever his voice cracked as a teen, his mutant ability was believing what he wanted you to believe despite your sight and hearing told you. For a criminal, it was a good power to have and one that saved him from prosecution as nobody believed the witnesses against him. Squeaky was always kind to her and who kept her safe when her father was laying low. Squeaky was happy to do whatever was needed to help her, and she always paid him back by helping the restaurant whenever she could even if she didn't owe him a favor. He wasn't entirely a good person, he did offer gambling and loans to people that he kept a tight control over, but he was always kind to her. Squeaky was aware of what she was up to and why and gave her a big hug and kiss when she asked to see him by code word to the hostess. He didn't ask what was going on with her, telling her warmly "you look so much like her. Your father is a pile of garbage, he will pay dearly for what he is doing to you. Your grandfather will see to it - I won't let him not help. None of us will let him live if he refuses." Binary looked at him in shock, to which Squeaky sighed and explained, "You look like your mother. I don't have to know what's going on in your panties to know that you are taking after her in body. You are the spitting image of her when she was a little girl. She lives on in you, you are her in body." Squeaky sat her down and shed a tear at some horrible memory. He calmed himself and explained "you are as he feared you would one day be. He hoped that you never had powers that overtook his own, when you showed that you were immune to his manipulation powers he changed for the worse and became the paranoid man you know now. You scare him, so much so that he hoped you'd die in that raid. If not for the STAR League taking the lead in the raid in Worcester you would have been murdered by the MCO. Those SWAT agents were the worst of the worst in the New England MCO." That was tough news to hear. Squeaky smirked and added "he made a huge mistake, he went directly to the STAR League and broke the truce between the heroes and supervillains. Boston is neutral grounds, nobody is to control it yet he broke the treaty and now will face consequences. There are four heroes who openly operate here but they aren't organized. Nobody breaks the treaty without consequence, be they hero or villain nobody breaks it without facing justice from both sides." Squeaky led her to the back and fed her a decent meal, one of his special classic Italian dishes that he knew she loved and couldn't get enough of eating. He didn't have to do much to get her to eat, she was family to him even if her father was total garbage to him. She was always welcome there and she was safe from anyone who was after her as no criminal in Boston dared to attack Squeaky's restaurant without dozens of people demanding that person's head. Squeaky let her eat in peace and allow her to get settled in for the upcoming meeting that he knew she would hold with her other allies. She had her list ready but he had already started to call "Jade Tiger" Lee, "Bengal" Punjab, "Nighteyes" Jackson, "Deathmaker" Johnson, and "Aqua" Jones. They were the leaders of the criminal operations of the Boston area and who were the ones who united the underworld under a common set of rules and way of doing business. Jade Tiger was the head of Chinatown. He possessed the power to shift into a human/tiger hybrid that had four paws with razor sharp claws, a set of sharp teeth, a tail, and could run fast on all fours and scale trees and buildings like a tiger. He was intimidating, especially as his skin was had stripes and he had a perpetual scowl that scared most people away from daring to upset him. Bengal was the head of the Chelsea/Revere/Everett loan operations. He was a cobra avatar who had scales all over his body as well as fangs that were filled with a deadly toxin. He was feared for having a nasty temper, one that he played-up for dramatic impact to get what he needed from someone. Nighteyes was the leader of the Roxbury overland smuggling group and who had the unfortunate luck of being nocturnal due to his deformity. He was a warper who could bend any metal easily from a distance, making him someone who was feared yet whose power never got used unless in self- defense. He was also a close contact for the inmates at the secret government prison buried underneath Mission Hill and ensured that none of the MCO or other government agencies harassed inmates or made them "disappear" without they themselves having the same fate happen. Deathmaker was the head of the region's brothels. He was able to create bursts of energy from both of his hands and hit precise spots that could kill you instantly. Much of the image was actually due to his having learned martial arts and was dramatic in his displays, but he was deadly to anyone if cornered. Aqua was the youngest of the group and the one who stood out for being almost normal. He had the power to create water from the air and shape it as he saw fit. His control of water was essential as he was the head of the Boston aquatic smuggling industry, a place he took pride in maintaining and who was the bane of law enforcement but who was beloved by people on the North and South Shores. The men weren't happy to have their evenings disrupted but the mere mention of "Morgan Pine" was enough to get the five to head directly to Squeaky's restaurant to see Binary, with all five hugging and kissing her as soon as they saw her. She didn't know the full story, all she knew was that the five of them saw in her something that she didn't know about. It was as if they treated her like a VIP who deserved their respect, even if they had already known her for years. The seven got down to business while their guards kept watch outside of the room. Binary told the men "my father is trying to take control of Boston and the entire region. He's been working hard to build an image of inept and easily exploitable but he was really working behind his employers' backs to force them out. You six will be next on his list, once he's done with Master Blaster, Ms. Manic, and Khaos." She sighed then explained, "Master Blaster stupidly let him into his lab. He has no guards and no way of defending himself without his weapons. We all know that without his rifles he is useless. I guarantee that he's dead already and dad has his weapons, and he plans giving them to his minions to use on you." Tiger blurted out, "He's in hiding, how can your father know where he is? Nobody has been able to find him since he broke free from the Roxbury prison." Binary shot back an angry, "He stole Master Blaster's plasma rifle from the STAR League. I examined it with my nanites and saw the basic non- devisor technology in it. It has its own built-in homing beacon and led him to where Master Blaster is holed-up. Dad will take payment then kill him." The others nodded in agreement, it would be what anyone would do if they were trying to take control over the southeastern part of the state. Master Blaster was on the lam for years and his rifle was his most prized possession, to get it back was something that he'd pay handsomely for. The only way to get it back was to have someone do exactly as Daniel had done. Binary then added "he went for Khaos' power cane and Ms. Manic's guns. He's going after them next then will go after me. He will go after Ms. Manic as she's next-closet and is easy to beat without her guns to channel her energies properly. Khaos is after her, dad has mystical help ready but needs to get payment from the other two to pay the mage before he goes for Khaos. I don't know how much time I have but I need help from all of you. I can't do this alone, he will have an army after me. Only you guys can cut down the numbers he can get." All six were in agreement, they would help her in full. She was going to stop a war between the STAR League and the supervillain community, one that would break decades of quiet among mutants and get the MCO directly involved despite the protests of the regional director. The MCO was mostly quiet in the Boston area due to the truce and the regional director being someone who actually cared about and supported the mutant community, breaking it would cause them to bring their own wrath on mutants. Squeaky looked at the others and nodded, then told Binary, "We can't hold him off any longer. We must bring in your grandfather to put an end to your father's actions. He's the only person who can keep the truce in place and stop your father. I know you don't know him, but he would never let you get hurt and will fight for you. Taurus needs to do something, Taurus needs to rampage again." Binary asked who the heck Taurus was, she had never heard of him before nor had her nanites found any information on them from the phones that the six had in their pockets. He was a complete mystery to her and she hated mysteries. She waited for a response but none wanted to tell her the truth. She didn't need them to tell her. Behind her came a booming, "I'm Taurus." She turned and saw a man standing six and a half feet tall, with rippling muscles and a scowl on his face that made her flinch in fear. He grabbed Binary into a deep hug and kissed her cheek. The six did not dare say a word about the affection, none of them dared to upset Taurus. Binary's nanites didn't react to him in the least. There was something about him that made them sense that he wasn't a threat to her and let her feel his strength and warmth rather than protect her. She was safe with him, he would protect her even if she could protect herself on her own. Taurus let her calm down and loudly proclaimed, "My son is delusional and is of the belief that he can do what I refused to do. I united Boston's criminals but he wants to rule over them with an iron fist. He doesn't have a chance of succeeding, the second he consolidates his power he will be killed by the very men he hires to help him. I've seen it before in other places, I know that he has even less control than any of them. He's no Doctor Diobolik or Lord Paramount when it comes to control over minions." The eight began to plot what would happen, with Binary thinking and correcting the plans as they were laid out in full. None of them dared to say anything as it was clear that she was doing better at planning and was doing what her grandfather had done 36 years before, when he laid out plans for the six to take control after he retired from the life of crime. Taurus listened intently and didn't offer any information of his own.
