Charlie blinked when she entered the town hall. The large double doors
entered into a roped off hallway, a metal detector stood in front.
Bored police officers sitting at a folding table next to the metal
detector looked up as Angie and May stepped in behind Charlie.

The cop sighed. "I still have to search you. Just because you learned
some Penn and Teller tricks doesn't mean I can just let you through."
Marie stepped through the metal detector with a smirk, and the other
police officer standing on that side of the archway, a woman, patted
her down. She stood up with a puzzled look on her face, but gestured
for Marie to procede.
Lee glared at the two police officers as she was subject to the same
treatment, and, when it was Charlie's turn, she ran into a problem. She
couldn't get her boots off.
"Sorry, this is my first day," Charlie said in embarrassment as she
jumped on one foot, struggling to pull her boot free of her foot, "I
don't know how this comes off."
"You have to WANT it to come off," Marie suggested while Lee scoffed.
"Just let it go in your mind and it will come off."
"Wait, how do I," Charlie blinked as the boot slipped off. The instant
Marie had told her the issue was mental, something clicked in Charlie's
mind, and she knew how to release the boot. She placed it on the tray,
and watched it shimmer and vanish, just like Marie and Lee's boots had.
Her other boot followed in a moment as the first cop looked on in
disgust.
"Cute trick," he said, rolling his eyes, "I like the part where you
pretended you didn't know what you were doing."
"I didn't pretend," Charlie said, shaking her head, but then decided
that she was better off just going through. She held her arms out as
she other cop patted her down, and soon she was standing next to Marie
and Lee.
The other two got through faster, and then Marie looked back at the two
cops. "Where's the county clerk?"
"That way, up the stairs, turn right, second door on the left. Just
follow the signs," the first cop said by rote. "If you reach the permit
office you've gone too far."
"Thank you," Marie said, and then the Trailer Park girls were moving
down the hallway.
"Can't believe we're wasting money on that magical girl thing," the
first cop said to his partner, "There's no way that's real. It's just a
scam."
"Government program, what are you going to do?" the female cop
shrugged, "You gotta admit the thing with the boots was good."
"Stage magic," the first cop scoffed.
The bickering duo's voices faded as the Trailer Park girls went up the
stairs. Soon they were in front of the county clerk's office.
"Let me do the talking," Marie said urgently, "don't give them any
personal information. We go in, we fill out the forms, get our pictures
taken, then leave. They don't get our real names, they don't get our
real address. This is serious. Rubella, don't say anything at all, no
matter what. You're playing the mute game."
May, now Rubella, nodded emphatically.
Charlie, now Bloom, tipped her head quizzically, "How are we going to
fill out forms if we don't give them our information?"
"Just use your Magical Girl identity," Marie, now Rash, replied,
"Magical girl names and powers are all unique. We just need to show
that we really are magical girls and that we aren't scammers just
trying to cash in, then they legally can't ask anything else."
"Whatever, let's just get this over with." Lee, now Lockjaw, rolled her
eyes. "It's just paperwork bullshit."
"Paperwork bullshit that can get us killed," Rash replied seriously,
"if there's any doubt, just keep your mouth shut."
With that, Rash pushed open the door to the office and walked up to the
counter.
There were three clerks behind the counter, and they looked back and
forth between each other before the one in the middle, an overweight
woman in a red blouse and a large pearl necklace, spoke up, "How can I
help you?"
"Registering for Magical Girls," Rash said as she walked to the
counter.
"I...what?" the woman asked in confusion. "I've never heard of that."
"Forms FS-10-793-C, and FS-10-812-C," Rash supplied helpfully, "Magical
Girl team registration and application for financial assistance. You
might need to print them, I don't think many people ask for them."
"Financial assistance?" the woman asked doubtfully. "Department of
Human Services is down the hall, and none of you are handicapped, so
you won't get approved unless you're pregnant. Are any of you even
eighteen?"
"Just print forms FS-10-793-C and FS-10-812-C, please," Rash said
through gritted teeth, "we can have them filled out and submitted in
less than fifteen minutes."
The woman stared at Rash for a few moments. "I'm getting my manager."
"kcchhh," Lee scoffed as she rolled her eyes, "I don't know what the
hell else I was expecting."
Bloom shifted from foot to foot, uneasily, as the woman behind the
counter turned to walk away. The two remaining clerks looked uneasy,
clicking away at their computers and typing using the "hunt and peck"
method.
"Hey, can one of you print those forms so we can get them filled out
while we wait for the manager?" Rash asked as she leaned up on the
counter.
"Sorry, she's the only one that can log into the database," the clerk
on the left said, "we can't do anything without her password."
"You don't need a database, it's on the state website," Rash explained,
"there's nothing secret about it. I'd have printed them already, except
the library wouldn't let me print since I didn't have a card. It's
right under fishing permits. You just click and it brings up the
forms."
"Sorry," the man on the left said, then returned to pretending to work.
Lee scowled, "Let's just leave. These fuc-"
"Lockjaw!" Rash snapped, "No swearing in here! You'll be in contempt of
court or some shi...something."
Bloom was just about to suggest they come back later, with the forms
already filled out, when the woman returned with a self important
strut. She was trailing a tall, heavyset older man in a short sleeved
button up shirt and tie.
"Them!" the woman said, pointing at the Trailer Park girls.
"What's this I hear about you girls trying to apply for financial
assistance you don't qualify for?" The man asked as his eyes moved up
and down the Trailer Park girls. He frowned in disapproval the instant
he laid eyes on them.
"Magical Girl team registration, forms FS-10-793-C, and FS-10-812-C,
sir," Rash replied, "We can fill them out and be done in fifteen
minutes. Then you take our pictures, sign on the witness line, and send
them off. That's it."
The man looked at Rash for a moment, and his eyes swing to the others
girls, then back to Rash."Do your parents know you are here?"
"Magical Girl registration does not require parental involvement, it
says right on the-" Rash said patiently,
"What's your name, girl?" the man interrupted.
"Magical Girl Conta-" Rash started.
"Your REAL name," the man interrupted again.
"Magical Girls are not required to divulge their civilian identities or
information that would allow anyone to deduce their identities, such as
address or phone number." Rash said, "per statuette H -"
"First of all, the word you're looking for is statute, not statuette,
secondly, don't quote statutes at me, girl," the man raised his voice
slightly, "I've been the Comptroller here longer than you've been
alive. Not a single penny leaves this office without my say-so, and I
am NOT releasing funds to some girls that walk in here and won't even
give their real name."
"Funds for Magical Girls are provided by the state and don't come out
of the county or town budget," Rash said, "they are also-"
"I don't care about any of that," the man said, "what I care about is
that you girls walked in here, perform some sort of parlor trick at the
door, then waltz up to the counter expecting us to just hand out money
to able bodied people. I took a quick peek at this Magical Girl program
you are taking about, and it's a disgrace! It should have been canceled
long ago! Handing out money and phones to girls just because they put
together costumes and have some soft of after school club where they
pretend to hunt invisible monsters? How is that anything other than a
scam? I am not going to be a part of this farce. Now, you tell me your
real name, so I can call your parents, or there's going to be trouble."
"Let's just leave," Bloom suggested. "You said the forms are on the
website, right? Let's just mail them in."
"That was BEFORE you created a public disturbance in a place of
governance and refused a lawful order to identify yourself to a public
official," the man said, "You can either tell me right here and now,
and we'll have your parents come pick you up, or you can spend a night
in jail."
"Magical girls are not required to divulge-" Rash started to say.
"Enough, girl!" the man raised his voice, "I've been very patient with
you, but if the next words out of your mouth aren't your parent's name
and phone number, I'm going to have the correctional officers take you
across the street to the jail. The judge isn't in until Monday morning,
so you'll be there a while."
Bloom's eyes popped wide. "You can't do that! We haven't done anything
illegal!"
"Officers! Arrest them!" the man screamed out the door, and four police
officers, including the two down at the metal detector, walked slowly
into the county clerk's office.
"All right, girls, turn and face the wall, put your hands behind your
back," the first police officer said in a bored tone. "Let's get this
over with."
Rubella slowly stepped away from the police officers, with a blank look
in her eye as she glanced around, Beetus tensed up, but didn't move,
Rash turned and looked everywhere, including the ceiling and floor,
while Bloom started breathing quickly in panic. Bloom noticed that
Lockjaw had somehow slipped out without anyone noticing.
"Run!" Rash snapped out to her teammates.
"Now, don't make this harder on yourselves, girls, you're just adding
resisting to your charges," the Comptroller said as the four police
officers got closer to the Trailer Park girls.
There was a large open window in the back of the office, behind the
shoulder height counter. Rubella sprang onto the counter, not at one of
the waist high notches that the clerks were occupying, but at its full
height, as easily and lightly as a gazelle, then quickly jumped to the
half height office cubical wall behind the counter. She ran along the
top of the cubical wall and somersaulted through the open window,
despite the fact that it was on the second floor.
"Grab them!" the first police officer yelled as he lunged for Beetus.
Beetus was five ten, and nearly two hundred fifty pounds. Despite her
size, she easily sprang into a back flip as the police officer
approached, even placing a hand on his shoulder to get extra leverage
as her feet kicked against the dropped tile ceiling. She twisted in
midair and landed on the other side of the police officer, and a split
second later she was out the door.
Three of the police officers, including the female officer they met at
the door, went for Rash, but not a single one touched her. She easily
danced between their grasping hands, then darted to the door in a blink
of an eye.
Rash had made a clean escape. She was about to leave, when she glanced
back to check on Bloom. Bloom was standing there, pale as a ghost,
frozen like a deer in headlights. Rash knew that Bloom wasn't even
going to try to escape.
"Urrrghhh," Rash groaned in dismay, then held her hands up and waited
to be arrested.
As the police moved her hands behind her back, she looked at Bloom.
"Bloom! Bloom! Listen to me! No matter what, don't tell them your real
name, and fucking do NOT drop your transformation!" Rash yelled as she
was handcuffed. "Stuck in a jail cell is a real good time for a monster
to show up!"
"Yeah, yeah, monsters," the police officer said as he tightened the
handcuffs. "Let's get you over to the station and get you processed."
"I demand my right to be represented by a magical girl affiliated with
the-" Rash started to tell the police officer leading her down the
hallway.
"Hold it, I can't do anything about that," the police officer told her.
"You need to talk to the judge when he gets in on Monday."
Bloom swallowed nervously, watching as Rash was lead away. She didn't
know what to do, she'd never been arrested before. Should she follow?
"Come on, honey, hold out your hands," the female police officer said,
dangling a pair of handcuffs in front of Bloom. "I gotta put these on
you. Don't worry, it's just a precaution."
Bloom held her hand out and watched as the metal cuffs clinked around
her wrists. She blinked and shook her head. "What now?"
"Now I walk you down, we book you, get your mug shot, and put you in a
cell until we contact your guardians," the police officer said as she
started to walk Bloom towards the door. "You sure you don't want me to
just call your mom or dad? They can come get you tonight."
"No!" Bloom exclaimed, imagining how her mother would react to finding
out her son had turned into a magical girl and been arrested. She was
also worried about Rash's warning, but Bloom was more afraid of her
mother's reaction than the monsters at this point.
"Suit yourself, honey, but it's Friday after noon, and that's a whole
weekend you could be out having fun instead of locked in a cell," the
officer commented as she passed through the door.
"Monsters? She said she sees monsters?" one of the remaining officers
asked his partner. "Do we need to get someone in to do a psych eval on
them?"
"It's just play acting," the comptroller rolled his eyes, "they're just
acting out for attention. It's some kind of internet thing, where they
put on these costumes and make videos. A night in jail will settle them
down right quick, teach them there's some consequences to their games."
"My pastor talked about magical girls," the older woman said with a
slight sneer as her hand moved to the crucifix at her neck. "He said
they make these videos to lure in lonely young girls who want to make
friends, but they are really doing drugs and practicing witchcraft and
devilry."
Bloom meekly allowed the police officer to walk her down the hallway,
down the stairs, and across the parking lot to the police station. She
looked down, and noticed that her boots had somehow reappeared on her
feet. Soon she was ushered through the side door of the police station,
and she was being fingerprinted.
"Name?" the man behind the desk asked, bored.
"Magical Sorceress Perfect Floral Bloom," Bloom replied quietly.
"Ugh, another one," the man sighed as he wrote "no name given, alias
Bloom" on the fingerprint cards, "At least you've got a better name.
The one that was in here just a few minutes ago called herself
"Contagious Rash". What kind of name is that? Anyway, we're done, wash
your hands in the sink over there. It works better if you rub the soap
in first."
There was a large sink on the other wall, with a built in soap
dispenser. When Bloom used it, she noticed it was the same gritty soap
that mechanics used. No matter how hard she tried, the ink wouldn't
come completely off. Some ink remained under her fingernails and in the
whorls and lines of her fingers.
"You done?" the female cop asked as she watched Bloom dry her hands,
"Stand over here and smile for the camera!"
Bloom didn't actually smile, but she did stand and turn as instructed.
Soon she was lead to another door, which opened into a split hallway.
One direction said "women", and the other said "men". Bloom had a
moment of confusion when the cop pulled her to the direction marked
"women" before remembering that she was a magical girl now. The female
cop turned and gestured at a tiny cell slightly bigger than a bathroom
stall with a bench built into the back wall.
"Here's your room, honey," the cop said as she reclaimed her handcuffs,
then turned to walk away, "I'm Officer Jenner, just call me if you
change your mind and want to talk to your parents."
"Aren't you going to shut the door?" Bloom asked in surprise, gesturing
at the opened barred door to her tiny cell.
"Are you going to try to run off?" Jenner turned around.
Bloom paused for a moment. "No?"
"Then I'll leave this open. You wouldn't get far if you did run,
anyway," Jenner said from down the hall, "I'll be back to check on you
before I get off shift. I'm showing you some trust, so be a good girl."
"You fucking suck up," Rash commented from the cell kitty corner to
Blooms. Unlike Bloom, her door was shut and locked.
"She's just nice?" Bloom asked.
"She's trying to get you to talk. She's the good cop. The bad cop will
be here later." Rash said, "Fuck, Bloom, it's like this is your first
time getting arrested!"
"It is!" Bloom protested quickly.
Rash laughed maliciously, "Well, look at little goody two shoes Bloom,
getting arrested on her first day as a magical girl. How's that for
popping your magical cherry?"
"Shut up," Bloom said uncomfortably, "I never even did tell my mom
where I went."
Rash just laughed harder, then fell silent after a few moments.
Bloom let the silence go on for a few moments, then spoke up. "Hey,
Rash, thanks for staying. I know you could have gotten away."
"Whatever," Rash scoffed dismissively, "I didn't do it for you. Once
they get your identity, how long will it take for them to get ours? I
need to make sure you don't do something stupid. You'd probably
untransform right in the middle of the women's showers or something if
I weren't here."
"You sound just like a tsundere," Bloom commented impulsively, smiling.
Rash's jaw dropped. "Shut up, bitch! I am not a fucking tsundere!"
"Eeee! That's exactly what a tsundere would say!" Bloom giggled. She
was surprised at how feminine her laugh sounded, "What's your favorite
anime?"
"I don't watch anime!" Rash replied as she folded her arms.
"Yes, you do!" Bloom accused. "Or you wouldn't know what a tsundere
is!"
"Shut up!" Rash yelled, and Bloom laughed again.
"Shut up, shut up, shut up!" Rash yelled louder over Bloom's laughter.
"You sound just like a tsundere!" Bloom laughed harder.
"Ugh, fine, whatever, " Rash said as she slumped against the cell wall.
"You can't tell anyone."
"I won't, I swear," Bloom replied seriously. "Anime is a sacred bond."
Rash looked back and forth, making sure no one was close enough to
hear. "The Ancient Magus's Bride."
"You like that!" Bloom laughed, "Really?"
"What the fuck?" Rash held her arms up. "Okay, fine, what the fuck do
you like?"
"Death March to a Parrallel World, Overlord, Demon Lord Retry," Bloom
rattled off.
"Oh, god, you like isekai trash," Rash moaned, as she put her face in
her hands, "what the fuck is wrong with you?"
"You like the ancient magus bride, you have no room to talk!"
"At least Chise has a personality, not like your interchangeable
generic as fuck harem leads! You need to stop watching garbage tier
anime!" Rash responded. "Watch something good!"
"Oh, like what?" Bloom asked.
Rash's grin was wicked. "Youjo Senki, Kampfer...maybe Ranma 1/2"
Blooom looked at Rash for a moment. "Fine, fine, you made your point.
All the anime with a guy that turns into a girl."
Now Rash was laughing. "You should see the look on your face."
"Ugh, I changed my mind," Bloom complained, "you're not a tsundere.
You're a sadodere!"
Rash laughed again. "Damn straight, bitch."
Despite the fact that Bloom was probably going to spend the weekend in
jail, she couldn't help but smile slightly. As a boy, she had never had
very many friends, and when she moved into the trailer park, she hadn't
really clicked with any of the people here. Rash, along with the other
girls, hadn't made a good first impression, but Bloom could only think
of the fact that Rash had shown she was willing to spend a night in
jail to keep her company. Maybe the Trailer Park girls weren't as awful
as they had seemed when they gleefully beat her up and transformed her
into a magical girl against her will? Maybe being a magical girl
wouldn't be so bad, if it meant she could make new friends?
Bloom and Rash sat in silence for a while, before Bloom spoke up again.
"Hey, Rash?"
"Yeah?"
"How did Lockjaw get out? I didn't even see her leave."
"Oh, you remember how we didn't get noticed earlier?" Rash said. "She
just turned that power back on and walked out the door."
Bloom blinked. "Wait, so that power works on other magical girls too?"
"No, you just suck at noticing things," Rash rolled her eyes, "You need
to be more aware of your surroundings."
"Why didn't we all do that, then?" Bloom asked.
"It doesn't work if someone's already paying attention to you," Rash
said. "You need to use it before shit starts."
"So, Lockjaw just bailed on us," Bloom replied flatly.
"I guess," Rash muttered. She walked to the back of her cell and sat
down on the ledge. Bloom could hardly see her from that angle. "Why
didn't you run when I told you to?"
"I couldn't just leave everyone," Bloom said, "besides, we didn't do
anything wrong."
"Then why the fuck are we in jail?" Rash replied, shaking her head,
"Whatever, doesn't matter. Next time I tell you to run, you fucking
run."
"Kind of hypocritical of you, isn't it?" Bloom asked, amused.
"Shut the fuck up! If you ran when I told you to I could have run
also!" Rash yelled. "Now we're both stuck here!"
"Fine, fine, I get it," Bloom sighed. "Do you think they're going to
give us food?"
"No, it's already past 6," Rash said as she pulled her knees up to her
chin and wrapped her arms around her legs, leaning against, "but if you
think that sucks, I really need to piss and we don't get a bathroom
break until they change shifts."
"Uhhhh," Bloom trailed off. One thing she had noted during her time as
a boy was that girls were never shy about announcing when they needed
to use the bathroom. Would she feel the need to tell people now that
she was a magical girl?
Hours went by, Bloom lost track of the time. She laid uncomfortably on
the tile covered ledge in the back of the cell, and drifted fitfully to
sleep.
"Get up! Someone's coming!" Rash hissed from her cell across the hall,
startling Bloom into wakefulness.
Bloom sat up, she could hear footsteps coming, and when the five people
walking down the hall came into view, she blinked.
There were four police officers, Jenner, one of the other ones that
arrested Bloom, and two cops in State uniforms instead of local
uniforms, but the part that caught Bloom's attention's attention was
the person in the middle of the police officers.
She was stunning. Long purple hair flowed to the middle of her back,
luminous lavender eyes looked out from a perfect, heart shaped face,
perfectly shaped lips pursed gently as the beauty's gaze swept from
cell to cell, gracefully shaped legs moved with a precise rhythm, and
willowy hips swayed hypnotically as the girl approached.
Bloom had thought that the Trailer Park Girls magical girl forms were
the most beautiful girls she had ever seen in real life, but this new
magical girl made them look ordinary.
The magical girl stopped, flanked by the police officers, and Bloom
felt her cheeks heat under the magical girl's curious gaze. The girl
looked at Bloom for a long moment, seeming to stare into her soul,
then, with a slight smile, she turned to look at Rash, and her lips
turned into a frown.
"Hello," the new girl said guardedly.
Rash tipped her head back, looking at the new girl cautiously. "Hello,
Starlight."
