The Antler has a Wall of Fame these days. Photos of the famous and infamous denizens of the best little bar on the west coast ... of Michigan.

Right in the very middle is a black framed picture of Albert Fromm, Husband, Father and Engineer, over an original Jean Fromm oil portrait of the Edmond Fitzgerald. That portrait was surrounded by twenty-eight photos of the officers and crewmen ... lost eleven years ago this coming November just short of Whitefish Bay on the Big Lake.

There are photos of Pro Football players, Princes, Olympic Gold Medal Sailors, Authors and convicts. The winter lake is heavily featured with the ice coated storm wave buried piers ... water flung up and frozen in mid fling.

Pictures of the swing bridge and the Lake Freighter Anna C. Minch sitting on the bottom a few miles off the end of the Lighthouse. Photos of years of Rowing Lifeboat Guardsmen and the beginning of the Power Cutter. Fishermen who went out and didn't come back and their boats ... somewhere 'out there'.

Articles about the death as a Mill town and the recovery of Pentwater as a summer resort from the National Geographic.

Poems about Pentwater, songs about Pentwater, books about Pentwater, Archaeology, both underwater and land based excavations. Men who went to war and didn't come back and those who did.

A mini history of the town, the mill, the dunes and the beach.

In the back corner, almost behind the coke machine, is a very faded 1928 front page from the Milwaukee Herald with a picture of mom in her imitation snowman outfit, CAPTAIN's hat perched on her head, sticking a Colt .45 in her purse. The title?

'The Moll and her Handbag Weapon'

You were expecting something else?

Near it is another picture, a bad poster of our sailboat and an almost unrecognizable drawing of our faces. 'Missing. Presumed Lost in The September Cyclone of 1928. ' My five seconds of fame.

We had a great meal, even if the Five Star from the Twenties didn't survive the 'Crash of Twenty-Nine.' The Wendy heads the Burger List. Five Dollars with Fries.

Frank is Junior Frank. Ernie is Ernest. Ernest and Junior swap days; one day Junior cooks and Ernest runs the tap and the next day Junior tends bar and Ernest cooks. If you didn't know who was working the front you'd never know which one was cooking.

Frank senior and Ernie? That's them over in the corner at the window card table. The game? High Stakes Euchre. The other two players? His Honor, Judge Charles Austin and his wife Vera. Grandma Austin has her Hoyle at her elbow because Frank and Ernie cheat. When and if confronted they both readily admit to it.

Grandma and Grandpa are here to watch the Coast Guard test me for my Captains Certification. Evidently that's tomorrow. At FIVE AM? The examiner will be here at 5:30. I have to take him back to Ludington because the Guard Station here was abandoned in 1955.

School starts in two weeks and the family has the house, boathouse and both apartment houses 'til the end of the season. Someone, in their infinite wisdom, has had a three meter springboard installed next to the boathouse so the quay cannot be used for boats. Brilliant!

What has the family told the 'Waterfolk' about mother's and my whereabouts for the summer? Simple. We bought a sailboat in Chicago and spent the summer teaching me to sail. As far as it goes ... it's the truth ... as far as it goes.

And what of Teddy and his contents? The crate was returned over to the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Action Committee of the Federal Bureau of Investigations ... the case is ongoing. No one in the Chicago crime syndicate knew about the contents of Teddy as they were copies. The man who lost the boat? He didn't live long enough to go to trial ... suicide in jail while awaiting a bail hearing. Suicide? Hmm?

Mom and David have missed each other ... the headboard banged against ti paneling all night long. I DID NOT need that reminder that I itched.

Five Am comes early ... so did the examiner. I sported him to breakfast at the Antler. After that we walked down to the Marina and I had to explain every single hull fitting ... where it went ... what it did and what emergency measures could be taken if I suddenly found myself standing in water in the cabin.

"Fothering a sail?"...

"Stranding lengths of rope yarn and threading it through a piece of canvas to cover a hole in the hull," I said.

That got a real look.

"I read it in a Hornblower novel."

"How long does it take for a quick drying fiberglass patch to dry under water?"...

"What brand?" I asked.

"West Marine."

"No idea, I use Gougeon Brothers WEST SYSTEM Epoxy. It's a Michigan brand. 25 minutes."

He had to look at a can for that. I was right.

We walked back to the Yacht Club.

"Where are we?" he asked and handed me a sextant and a Bowditch's American Practical Navigator.

"I need a horizon to be really accurate but if you give me a few minutes..."

He nodded.

I guestimated the time, shot the horizon out the channel and the angle of the north star ... because it was 'too fucking early for man or beast to be out and about.' Fiddled with a pencil for a little bit and said, "43° 46′ 49″ N, 86° 25′ 48″ W," and grinned at him. He was still trying to get his GPS to work.

"Let's get to your boat," he said and started to look for it at the club, "Which one is your dad's?"

"I don't think Daddy has a boat ... but he might. Mine is over there." I pointed at the 50 foot one year old shiny white sailboat backed into the slip at the dock in front of our boathouse.

He got this look ... fuck!

"Set you up, did they?" I said.

"Yes. I was told to belittle your pretensions."

"Well, that's her. You ready?" I grinned, "Come on. I'll make coffee. The Judge and his wife will be along presently."

One block north and half a block west and then down the long slope to the dock. His boots were soaked.

"Hold on ... you're not wearing those on my clean decks. What size shoe?"

Informed, I fetched a new pair from the boathouse and brought out a pair for me. There's a bench just for changing shoes on the dock. We both switched. I boarded ... he was hesitant.

"This is yours? Not your Mom or Dads?"

"Title in my name ... trust fund kid."

Wendolyn Too Number 4 in STOPWATCHChapter 9 The Itch

I found someone to scratch mine ... after I used the watch. First, there had to be a way to keep the information I found in Teddy Bear safe. Mother suggested I find a shipping concern or a bank that managed to stay in business through the 'coming unpleasantness' ... something still in operation in 1975. Not as easy as you might think, shipping concerns fail, the name picked up again years after. Banks failed by the hundreds in the 'Crash of '29, ' picking one that succeeded in the...

The dig began like all digs. Before the crew arrived, a USGS survey marker was located. This one happened to be at the junction of Co. 210 and US 550. The Elevation and North were stamped on the cap of the marker. Declination from magnetic north was listed. The marker was dated 1920. Davis supplied his own 'pit boss.' Steve was a professional who ran his own archaeological survey crew. They mostly did foot survey for the Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management. They also worked...

Life goes on, I need to find someone to scratch and lotion my boobs. They itch. The Chief from the Guard Station in Ludington was right. I might be short but I'm curvy ... very curvy ... and getting curvier. Nice, polite people called it 'entering into your mothers estate'. Monty Python's The Holy Grail called it 'Huge ... tracts of land!' as the king cupped his hands in front of his chest. Along with tits and a butt, I grew into my face. The facial baby fat cheeks migrated to the...

I'd like to say that order was instant. I'd like to say that the class treated me like a teacher. I'd like to say that the moms and dad helped to restore and keep order. I can't. The vast majority were my siblings ... if they acted out like this in regular school ... I was all for sending them all to Catholic School and let the Nuns sort them out. I was Too, their snot nosed redheaded brat of a sister. Nobody paid any attention to Too. Whoever heard of a teacher with the outlandish...

I wound the watch. I was careful to count the clicks of the stem winder. I quit at ten. “Wendy! Did you wind the watch?” Hmm ... Mom was in a panic. That was unusual. “Yes! I wound the watch. What do I? ... Gawd, mom ... they’re awful close.” “Something’s not right. The other boat is still there heading right...” The other boat, looking like a Coast Guard Cutter, plowed right through our boat ... or not. We were pretty confused. There should have been an enormous impact. That didn’t...

She bought it in 1978." The good Professor, trying to get things straight, said, "She bought a fifty foot sailboat in 1978 when she was 12. That seems rather ... odd." I think my mom and I are going to have so much fun. We had to make arrangements. The boat was at the Coast Guard Station in Calumet City. There's nothing to write about here. It's a piss boring trip from Armadillo to Albuquerque and up to Durango. It's desolate waste land that has no value. That's why the Native Americans got it. Washington had no use for the land and less use for the Navajo. Any time a white found a use for a piece of the rez, Washington took it. No compensation, and no apologies. Just took it. One bright sunny day, you find a curious glowing pencil laying on the side of the road. You are immediately compelled to walk over and pick it up, and as you do, you notice a thin line being drawn from its lead into the air. Gasping in surprise, you give another flick, drawing a circle in mid air, which falls to the ground. You look around to see if anyone is watching - no one seems to be around. You decide to try something a little more complicated, and draw your name in big outlines....

In the morning I had changed back into being James, albeit with a little reluctance. Alex had suggested I...

Cockatoo Part 26

Cockatoo Part 26“Dao, Dao, calm down. What do you mean she’s been taken?”Alex wrenched the phone from me and talked to Dao in Thai. At the same time, Alex’s phone rang.“Jamie, it’s Shane. I tried to call your phone, but it’s busy.”“Alex is on the other phone to Dao. She says Areeya’s been taken. What the fuck’s going on?”“Thaksin just called to warn me. Jandaeng was being taken under guard to hospital to have treatment on his arm. They were jumped between the prison and the hospital, and he was...

Cockatoo Part 10

Cockatoo Part 10 I live for feedback [email protected] We woke early as Alex had to be at the airport to catch the flight with Kritsada at 7am. He was going to pick Alex up from the flat in his car as he headed off to the airport. I was going to follow a bit later as I had to collect Samantha from her flight for our planning meeting. I lay in bed and watched as Alex got ready to leave. I didn't think I could ever tire of watching her as she moved about the flat showering...

Toys for TootsChapter 3

The girls were trapped but they could just see Jeff and me gesturing towards the ladies' room as obviously as we dared and they got the hint of our desperate plan. "Ok, we'll do whatever you want, but first let Amy go take a piss and let me get this monster of a plug out of my ass. I can't even walk let alone fuck with this huge thing in me." We heard Toots loudly say in what had to be a stage whisper meant for us. It didn't give much time to get our plan underway, but it was better...

Toys for TootsChapter 2

"Wake up — it's time to get divorced!" Now those were words to get a man like me excited! That woke me right up and got my complete and undivided attention! We had a slight detour or two getting out of the door though. Her bags were already packed and my small overnight bag was still out in my trunk but we got a tad distracted while in the process of more thoroughly greeting each other while she changed out of her uniform. In fact, at one point we were both nude on her bed kissing like we...

Cockatoo Part 11

Cockatoo Part 11 I live for feedback [email protected] It was at this precise moment that Areeya looked up, stared straight into my eyes and winked. I staggered back in shock. Areeya must have seen me when she glanced at the door. Either that or she was some kind of a witch. I managed to bang my knee as I stumbled backwards and it was a miracle I didn't scream. I made it back to bed and managed to fall asleep but slept fitfully for the rest of the night. I can remember...

Cockatoo Part 20

Cockatoo Part 20 I stopped dead in my tracks. "What did you say, Pao?" "Miss Sam, she meet the man. The horrible man. Nin follow him and saw them talking." "Was Nin sure it was Sam?" "Yes, Mr James, she say she saw them clearly outside hotel he staying." I couldn't believe it. What the hell would Sam be doing with this creep? Areeya was now well ahead of me on the way to Cockatoo, I didn't want her to hear this until I go there. "Pao, please don't say anything to Alex or...

Cockatoo Part 3

Maybe things could have been different, I don’t know, but I found myself in a taxi on the way to Samui airport. I was struggling to come to terms with what had happened and I felt physically sick at what I had heard. I had to get the taxi driver to stop so I could retch at the side of the road. I managed to buy a ticket on the next flight to Bangkok and by mid afternoon I was back in the city. I booked into a hotel close to Nana Plaza and sent a couple of hours stewing in my room, drinking the...

Cockatoo Part 2

I had no idea how long I had spent under water but I could see a bright light above me and I thought it must be the sun shining through the water as I clawed myself towards the surface. But, I thought, ‘No, that can’t be. It was dark when I fell in.’ The light grew brighter and brighter and I wondered ‘Maybe I’m dead’. I tried to open my eyes but it was so bright I couldn’t f***e my eyelids open. I heard sounds from a long way off and it sounded like voices, but they were muffled and I...

She has been a most gracious host. Is there something I can do for you?’‘Yes, James, there is. You remember the party I talked about this week? Cockatoo part 13

Cockatoo Part 13Nikkie SilkJandaeng’s voice came through loud and clear and chilled me to the bone.‘It seems you’ve had some trouble at your bar over there, James.’Bad news travels fast I thought. I hated the sound of his voice. It mademy flesh creep and took me straight back to the bar in Bangkok and whathe had done to me that night. I took a deep breath and tried to keep myvoice as calm as possible.‘Yes Inspector, the mamasan was stabbed in a bar fight. I’m surprisedyou know about it.’‘It is...

Cockatoo part 10

Cockatoo Part 10Nikkie SilkMy heart skipped a beat as I heard Shane’s voice from behind me and felt his hand on my shoulder. It couldn't be, I thought, I must be so tired I was hallucinating. Alex said, ‘Hi Shane, glad you could join us.’ Nin looked as if she had seen a ghost, Areeya was smiling in welcome and I felt like I would pass out. The hand moved off my shoulder and Shane’s massive frame came into sight.‘Hi Nin, Hi Areeya.’ he said, then paused and looked at me, ‘Hi Jamie, how are you?...

Cockatoo Part 1

Cockatoo Part 1 It's a clich?, isn't it? Man comes home early and finds his wife in bed with someone else. Only slightly less of a clich? in my case, as the "someone else" was my wife's closest girlfriend - closest in every sense of the word. It was a quick divorce; no kids, only a rented flat, so the only squabbles were about books and cds. In the end I told her to keep the lot. I wanted to make it a clean break. I managed to fit all I owned into the boot of my small car. I was 25 ye...

Cockatoo Part 5

Cockatoo Part 5 I lived for feedback. [email protected] "That's nice, baby," I heard Alex say. Something was wrong though, Alex's voice wasn't coming from on the bed and if she had my cock in her mouth how could she say anything? Her voice seemed to be coming from the somewhere further away. I opened my eyes and saw her sitting in her robe on one of the couches. It took me a good few seconds to process that and as I looked down the bed I saw Areeya, naked, smiling and...
