Julie and Samantha came home from the hospital 2 days later. Julie was still on an emotional high. The first time she sat down in the rocker and rocked her baby to sleep put a smile on her face that I didn't think would ever fall off. After she put the baby to bed, she came back out with Becky and me. She didn't seem as happy anymore.

"Julie, what's wrong?"

"I wish my Mom could be here to see her new granddaughter. I still haven't heard from them at all."

"Give them time. It takes time for them to admit that they are old enough to actually be grandparents."

"I hope you're right."

I looked at Becky and gave her a wink. Becky knew that I was up to something. Later, after Julie had gone to bed, I finally got the chance to talk to Becky.

"Becky, I'm going to try to get in touch with her parents. I'll try from work where they won't be able to see the caller id telling them where the call is coming from."

"That's a good idea. Do you have their number?"

"Yeah, she's been trying since she moved in to call them. I know she's said more than once that she just keep leaving messages. I just checked the phone bill."

"Can't hide it from there."

That Monday at work, I took my lunch break to place the call. I rang a couple times before someone answered.

"Hello?"

"Hi, I'm looking for Mr. or Mrs. Weeks."

"You're talking to the Missus. How can I help you?"

"I'm calling for a friend, your daughter Julie."

I got a very rude, "Oh" returned back to me.

"She's been trying to get in touch with you for a few weeks and has been having some trouble. She really wants to talk to her parents."

"What's there to talk about? She no longer seems to care what we think. She was at school for a few months and was already tramping around."

"Listen, she just gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, your granddaughter. She would like to at least introduce you."

"The last thing I knew, she was giving the baby up. What happened to that plan?"

"Well, like most mothers, she fell in love with her daughter. She also doesn't feel like she has a home to go back to anymore."

I noticed that I was getting quite a bit of silence. It took her some time to come back.

"I'm sorry. It just upset me so much when I found out. She couldn't even tell me."

"Well, give her a chance to explain. She can't tell you how she felt unless you give her a chance."

"Yeah, you're right. Listen, would it be ok if we drove up to surprise her? I would like to meet my granddaughter."

"I know she would like that. Do you have the address where she has been staying?"

"Yeah, we still have her letters."

"Good. When can I expect you?"

"How about the second weekend in August. That's in 2 and a half weeks. We're going to have to take a few days off from work."

"That will be fine. I'm not going to tell her. I want it to be a surprise."

"Ok. Listen, it seems that she's not going to come home this summer. School starts back up in only 4 or 5 weeks. We'll drive her car up and fly back down. Now that she has the baby, she may want that."

"Yeah, she does."

"Ok. Thanks umm..."

"Rob"

"Thanks."

I felt good. I had a surprise coming that I knew was going to surprise Julie. I know that she had needed a surprise.

The next 2 weeks went by quite quickly. My birthday just happened to fall on the weekend when the Weeks were coming for their visit. So I planned on having a big barbeque cookout. When the Friday arrived, things could not have been any better. I had gotten a call earlier in the day letting me know what time to expect them. I had preparations going for dinner to be nice and enjoyable.

Becky was in on the surprise with me. She talked Julie into taking Samantha for a walk at just the right time. About 20 minutes after they left, I heard a knock on my front door.

"Hello?"

"Hi, Rob?"

"You must be Julie's parents." I offered my hand, "Robert Becker. Everyone calls me Rob."

Julie's father shook my hand. "Nice to meet you Rob. My name's John and this is my wife Janet."

"Why don't you come in and have a seat. I'm sure you're tired from the long drive. Can I get you something to drink?"

Janet replied, "God yes."

"I hope Diet Pepsi or regular Pepsi is good. That is almost all I drink. The kids drink the regular."

"Diet will be fine for both of us, Thanks."

I went to the kitchen to get some drinks. I returned handing a can to each.

"If you need the bathroom, you'll find it at the end of the hall."

"Thanks. Is Julie here?"

"She's taking a walk with my daughters right now. They should be back in a little while. How long are you going to be here?"

"Our flight will leave from Buffalo on Sunday afternoon. We figured that we could get a room to stay at a motel or something."

"Nonsense. You can use my bed. I will crash on the sofa for 2 days."

"Oh no, we couldn't impose on you or your wife like that."

It took me a moment to reply. "My wife was killed in a car accident in late April. It's just me now."

"Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to..."

"It's Ok. You had no way of knowing. Listen, I have a barbeque planned since it's my birthday, so you're welcome to join us."

"Sounds good."

About that time, the door opened and I heard the girls come in.

"If you could excuse me for a moment, I think the girls have returned."

I walked out to the foyer to see Julie putting the stroller away. Becky was holding Samantha and had a smile on her face. She knew what was going to happen next.

"Julie, I have a surprise for you in the living room."

"Another surprise. Ok, so what is it this ti..."

That is as far as she got before she saw her parents waiting there for her. Janet and John jumped up happy to see their daughter.

"Julie!"

"Mommy, Daddy!"

Tears were flowing everywhere. Becky and I stood back with Sam and watched as they greeted each other. They must have been hugging, kissing and crying for 5 minutes before Julie remembered Sam.

"Mommy, Daddy, I would like to introduce your granddaughter Samantha."

Becky walked over and handed the baby to Janet. You could see hearts melt with that little baby. A few minutes later, John walked over to me and asked the obvious question.

"Rob, I thought you said that Julie was with your daughters. I see Becky, but where... You're the father aren't you?"

I nodded.

"That's why you've been taking care of them."

Again, I just nodded.

"I don't know whether to hit you or hug you."

"Well, before you start the hitting part, you might want to talk to your daughter about how it happened. The little minx set me up."

"Ahh. Really. I might just have to do that."

The rest of the weekend was wonderful. Julie was as happy as I've ever seen her. She had her car and her parents were talking with her again. That got me another big hug after they left.

The next few months settled into a routine. With all of us at school and me working, Robbie playing football and Sam spending time at day care. Life had settled down quite a bit into a routine. I was still dealing with Melanie's death. Besides crying myself to sleep almost every night, I still had the lawsuit pending.

The lawsuit against the driver and his trucking company was progressing and we had a preliminary hearing. It had been over a year since the accident. It had been moved up to a federal court level (Which I didn't understand why.)

We were awaiting the judge when I ran into another familiar face.

"Melissa?" She turned and looked at me.

"Rob? Is that you?"

"Yeah. You're the law clerk for this judge?"

"Yeah. How'd you know that I was a law clerk?"

"I ran into your brother about 2 years ago and he told me. We need to get together sometime."

"Sure."

We exchanged phone numbers and promised to get back in touch.

During the hearing, I actually interrupted to ask a question, upsetting my lawyer.

"Your Honor. Is Melissa your law clerk?"

"Yeah, why?"

"I don't know how my attorney feels, but I think it would be best if you remove yourself from the case."

"On what grounds?"

"Melissa and I grew up together. She was the closest I had to having a sister. That would create a possible conflict of interest."

He turned and asked the bailiff to fetch Missy. When he returned with her, he asked about the truthfulness of my statement. Missy agreed totally. So did the judge and that ended the hearing.

Missy asked if we could go for dinner that Saturday. I agreed. She came to my house to pick me up. God she was dressed up nice. Missy was always a beautiful young lady. She still was beautiful. She told me over dinner that it was good that I made the motion.

Lightning can strike twice 8211 even in an orgy

“Master.” Hal didn’t want to hear the voice. He didn’t want anything to intrude on whatever level of life he was now floating on. Eyes closed, a bed of unbelievable softness underneath him, the distant but comforting sounds of Josephine’s claws scratching on the dirt floor — and, best of all, the utterly satisfying feeling of having had his seed thoroughly drained out of his balls by the expert mouth of a beautiful woman. “Master.” He was...

Lightning Striking

The sound of the lawn mower hummed in the background as Kelley opened the windows in the house. The hot summer air mixed with the sent of freshly cut grass. Smiling, Kelley watched as Cam drove the lawn mower around in a small circle, trying to get the last stubborn weed before moving onto the next section of the lawn. The wind had picked up and dust was rolling behind the mower. “We really need the rain.” Kelley said out loud as she looked to the southeast corner of the sky. ...

Lightning Does Strike TwiceChapter 7

The next 2 weeks went by quickly. School was starting to get to the point where you're busy doing homework or studying for the next test. Work was also getting quite busy as well. One of the guys was going on vacation leaving us a person short. It did serve to distract me and let the guilt lessen most of the time. I couldn't feel guilty when I didn't have time to think about what happened. Melanie's strange hours were helping that as well. I was barely seeing her most of the time. I...

Lightning Does Strike TwiceChapter 5

My sinuses where starting to burn at this point. Don't let anyone tell you that cola through the nose is fun. It burns the nasal passages. "What did you need help with?" Julie's reply was very quiet. She was now looking down at her lap. "I want you to take my virginity." I realized that we still had everybody paying attention to us. This is not a discussion for an audience. "Julie, let's go for a walk." I offered her my hand and we left together. She was very quiet now. Her mood...

Lightning Does Strike TwiceChapter 9

When I arrived home, Melanie was waiting up. I knew she had more fight left in her. "Did you get your little troll back home?" "You know what Melanie, I love you dearly..." "Don't give me that bullshit!" "Would you let me finish, for once? Every time we fight, you never let me even finish an argument. It's your way of winning. What I can't finish, you can't lose. Well, it stops here. I love you dearly. Yes, I had a momentary brain freeze. I'm sorry. I can't change it. I would...

Lightning Does Strike TwiceChapter 11

I awoke on Tuesday to find Rob cuddled up close to me. It felt so good to be in his arms again. I didn't want this to end. Rob woke up some time later. I could tell that he had forgotten where he was. It took him a moment to get his bearings, but once he did he looked for the clock. "Shit, I'm late for school." I grabbed him quickly before he could get up. "Stay home today Rob. Please." "I still have to be to work at 1:30. What's the difference?" "I have to be to work at 2...

Lightning Does Strike TwiceChapter 12 Back to Robs World

Melanie had finally forgiven me, but I don't think I've forgiven myself yet. I was also pissed at Julie. It was bad enough that she seduced me, but to drug me as well really threw me over the edge. It seems that she had decided to become friends with my daughter. That means that I will be seeing quite a bit more of her than I would like. At least it keeps me in touch with how my new baby is doing. I still didn't know how to feel about this situation. I had gotten up for breakfast and felt...

Lightning Does Strike TwiceChapter 16 A peek into Julies world

School was finally out for the summer. College is definitely tougher than high school was. I think I did pretty well on my finals. My grades were going to be sent to my parents. Problem with that is they still won't talk to me. I had just moved in with Rob and his family. It's only until the baby is born. Then I will go home and try to make up with my parents. I will be glad to get back into my old clothes. I'm getting sick of this extended belly. The mood around the Becker household has...

Lightning Does Strike TwiceChapter 17

I had about a month to go before the baby was due. Now that I knew I was staying, I allowed myself to really grow to love my baby. I had planning to do and not much time to do it. Becky had already been helping me with some things. She was already working with me as my Lamaze coach. When I told her that I planned on staying, she was overjoyed. I wanted to do something to make a nice looking nursery. I realize it was just going to be a corner in my room, but I still wanted something. It was...

Lightning Does Strike TwiceChapter 2

It had been a long wonderful, holiday weekend. As is custom, Sunday was a family get-together/party at my parents. Food was plentiful, games were fun and plenty of drinking. Overall everyone just had a good time. Normally we would have spent the night but as Melanie had to work the overnight shift, we all had to get home so she could go to work. Monday was mostly spent lounging around recuperating from the fun of the night before. Since it was a major holiday, I was also free from having to...

Lightning Does Strike TwiceChapter 3

We arrived at my house just before 4:30. I led her up the sidewalk toward the door. "Are you sure your wife is ok with this?" "She's the one who brought up the idea of using the extra bed. If she has a problem with it, she sure didn't show it." I opened the door and led Julie inside. My kids were all at the dining room table doing their homework. We went in there so I could start the introductions. "Hi guys, how was school?" I got a reply from my daughter Rebecca, "Just like...

We arrived home at 1:30. Mike was the first one out the door to welcome us home. "Hi Mom, did you have a good time?" Mike reached around Mel to give her a hug. "Mommy had a wonderful time Mikey. Daddy really surprised mommy this weekend." "Good, I knew you were going to be happy." He gave me a hug as I came around the car. When we went inside the house where Becky greeted us happily. I woke up about 2 hours later still in the Wal-Mart parking lot. I had cried myself to sleep right there in the car. I was thinking about going home but remembered that I left my tools at Jessica's. I dug in the console for the Trac-phone that I normally kept there for emergencies. I called home, "Hello." "Hi Robbie, it's Dad. Could you look on the caller id box for the number that called around 1?" Robbie found the number and gave it to me. "Dad, mom got called into work just after...

I awoke bright and early on Sunday morning. I figured the alarm clock would be the device to wake me up. I found that my nose worked better. I went into the kitchen to find my son Robbie making breakfast. "Morning Robbie. That smells good. What are making?" "Sausage gravy and biscuits with omelets. Erin is coming over for breakfast. I figured I better make enough for the whole family." "Smart move." "We're then going over to her house to watch the game with her folks." "You...

It was getting near the end of my shift. Today was New Years Eve. I was still quite pissed at Rob. How could he do that to me? We have been married for over 16 years and he decides to have an affair. It has been fun putting Rob though all of that guilt. He makes it easy to use guilt as a weapon. It's actually been fun watching Rob squirm for the last month. Lightning Does Strike TwiceChapter 13

I woke up around 11am. We had gotten in extremely late and even the kids were exhausted. I made my way to the bathroom to take care of business. The pain the bladder can use to wake you up is excruciating. I started breakfast, if you could call it that at noon. Soon, the rest of my family had gotten up. Robbie and Melanie were making coffee. I never could understand what they like about it. I had seen what happens when you leave a half-cup sit for 2-4 weeks. It creates a tar like sludge in...

Sunday showed yet another dismal day. The kids all tried to cheer me up some. The problem was, they also needed cheering up. We were still seeing friends come over trying to help out however they could. I went into the office and started working on my homework. I still had 3 days worth, since I had missed Wednesday thru Friday of classes. I spent most of the day working on it. Robbie, Becky and Mike all lounged around the TV trying to find something to watch. They kept changing the channels...

Lightning Bugs and Spring Storms

Lying on my hammock, listening to the soft singing of the cicadas in the trees, I swayed in the cool spring breeze that was making the white, dogwood blooms dance overhead. Far above those white flower-laden trees the clouds were sweeping past, not fluffy and innocent cotton candy clouds but angry looking clouds. Off in the distance I heard a rumble that promised the rain they had said was soon to come. Within an hour or so I would have to go inside, but for now the approaching storm was just...

The kingdom Rivera is, on the whole, a prosperous kingdom. The kingdom is ruled from the capital city of Aster. Rivera is bordered to the north by a high mountain range with wild wastes beyond, the west by an endless, uncharted forest and to the south and east lies the ocean. Across the eastern ocean lie other lands but the southern ocean has never been crossed. Rivera is plagued by bandits and monsters, the same as any other kingdom. November 4, 2009 Yankee Stadium Bronx, New York The din from the crowd approached a deafening roar as Mariano Rivera, the New York Yankees' peerless relief ace, went into his stretch, about to deliver the tenth pitch of a tense at-bat to Shane Victorino, the Philadelphia Phillies' center fielder. With the count full, Victorino swung at Rivera's cut fastball, managing only a soft ground ball in the direction of Robinson Cano, the Yankees' second baseman. Cano fielded the ball cleanly,...

LIGHTNING REVEALS ALL It is raining outside. We can hear the drops pelt against the glass window panes and beat a staccato rhythm on the roof. The room is lit by the glow of a dying fire in the fireplace. Occasionally, we are illuminated by a flash of lightning, followed by the low rumbling of thunder that we can feel resonate in our bones. Lightning in a BottleChapter 75 Full Circle

July 10, 2007 I don't usually remember my dreams very well, unless I happen to wake up in the middle of one. However, the night after we decided to take part in the band competition in New Jersey, I had a dream unlike any I'd ever had before. It was so vivid, and so detailed, it didn't seem like a dream at all. In it, I was an observer. I merely took in the happenings around me, with the people appearing like actors in a play. I was positioned inside what appeared to be a hotel lobby...

Lightning in a BottleChapter 38 Spilling It Out

June 30, 1983 (continued) The three of us, seated around the tiny dinner table, picked away at our food. Both Evie and Inez, sensing that I wanted to discuss something, had remained mostly silent. They were clearly affording me the chance to open up to them. But when I didn't immediately seize the opening, Evie decided to speak up. "Pat," she said in a voice that was soothing yet firm, "you're being unusually quiet. In fact, you seemed a little off last night at practice, too. What's...

Lightning in a BottleChapter 54 Taking One For the Team

October 13, 1984 After a meeting among the six of us, we decided to take the following weekend off. It wasn't that big of a deal; it was a rare weekend where our only scheduled gig was on Friday. The lone booking was a show at an off-campus pub; Holly and Annie merely re-booked us for early December. My early ruminations about throwing in the towel quickly faded; as scary as the Ron Wilton situation had been, quitting would have been a gross over-reaction. However, a substantial perspective...

Lightning in a BottleChapter 57 Putting Humpty Dumpty Together Again

April 22, 1985 It was yet another Monday afternoon; I rested there in Inez's bed, with her in my arms, the both of us just having come down from the high of lovemaking. She was almost back to being herself; her sensitive nature didn't hold up well to an onslaught like Eileen had leveled upon her, and soothing her psyche had been a long and drawn-out process. Even though no resolution to the impasse was in sight, I felt hopeful that my sweetie would be just fine. "Do you love me, mi...

July 29, 1985 "We'll be doing this again in a few weeks, when it's my turn to move," I muttered to Paul, as he and I struggled under the weight of the sofa. "So, I'll owe you." Dave, meanwhile, came up and grabbed one corner. "Come on, you wimps. It's not that heavy," he cackled. Dennis directed traffic as we brought the couch down from the van – the same one Lightning in a Bottle had been using for the last couple of years to haul our band equipment. It was now serving a new...

September 12, 2007 They resumed two nights after I disposed of the bottle in the Pacific Ocean. They were unexpected, a little frightening, and quite a bit intriguing. They were the Dreams, and they were back. This time, they appeared to illustrate my life in the original timeline, as if I had never gone back! They were different in some ways from the dreams that both my beloved and I had experienced many weeks ago. They were not your typical lucid dreams; what was truly strange was that I...

I've had enough," she whispered breathlessly. With that he said, "Lie next to me, precious. I am going to roll over." Lightning in a BottleChapter 9 Back To School

August 1980 The summer began to wind down, and the countdown until the first day of school began. I found myself a job. I washed dishes at a nearby diner during the dinner shift, which was from 5p.m. to 10p.m. I worked three nights a week, and all day on Saturday. It was a fairly long walk from home, but I got used to it. Many times, either Mom or Dad picked me up at the end of the shift. Not exactly the type of work I'd grown accustomed to in my other life, but I was a teenager now, and I...

September 1, 2007 (continued) I paused for a minute to collect my wits. Then, I faced George, not at all confrontationally, but seeking answers. "Okay," I began. "It's obvious you know quite a bit about us – about me – and the secret I have. Either you overheard a conversation of ours, or you're a time traveler yourself." "Please excuse me," said a remorseful-sounding George. "I didn't mean to frighten you. But I have some things to share with you that are of vital importance, and...

The year is 1984, the place is the South Wales coalfields, the problem – a faceoff between the government and the National Union of Mineworkers, and one union leader in particular. The result is a yearlong strike, violent clashes between pickets and police, lack of food for most households that were already on the breadline, family tensions at breaking point leaving women desperate to provide for their families. It was, by far, the most bitter of disputes in British history and had no real...

Strike 2016

The Time To Strike It seems like a strange thing to look forward to, but when the news came down that we as a union might strike, I got very excited about what I could do with the time off. Some of the events that happened I could never have dreamed of, but I am so happy that they did happen that I felt the need to write my story. A little background on me. I live in the Albany, NY area. I am a 30 something year old male named Bob, who for the most parts is known to be one of the...

On Strike

On Strike! Copyright 2004 by Nom de Plume I got the idea while listening to the news on the radio, during another grinding commute home from the big city. It seemed a couple in Florida had gotten so sick and tired of their spoiled, neglectful children that they were camping outside their house in beach chairs, refusing to go back to being parents until their brats knuckled under. Why couldn't I go on strike from being the...

Lightning ch 1

Being me is pretty hard seeing as I can electrocute any living being upon contact and as an added bonus (which is good) I can control electricity at my will and absorb or distribute it. Ok I know that sounds really cool I mean who wouldn’t want to control lightning at their very will but imagine it going out of control and blacking out an entire city because you where hungry and couldn’t see in the dark so you decide to turn on the lights but accidentally eat and entire city’s worth of...

Lightning

Nina had worn the maxi dress in anticipation that it would be Zach who would be sliding it off her. She had laid in bed that morning, her fingers sliding over her moist slit in anticipation. In typical fashion, Zach had called at the last minute to say he was going biking with some buddies of his. She had been pissed and disappointed and not just a little hurt. Zach was such a typical child!Nina had wandered through the farmers’ market alone, her blonde hair flowing behind her. Eyes had turned...

Lightning Over Arizona Part II

I was concentrating very hard on not screaming that I looked out the airplane window and I could see that it was starting to rain.  It grew darker outside and I could of sworn I saw lightning out of the corner of my eye.  It was getting hard for me to breathe so it felt good that the air was blowing above me and towards my head.  How did I get here? I wondered to myself.  I felt chills down my back the more Tommy moved his fingers inside me.  I looked over to Gabriel and he was dead asleep...

LightningChapter 7

"God, Sheila, I got the best scrubbing. Maybe I'll get another chance," and moved back against her. "You'll get more than that before I'm through with you, and another chance, too." Then, Sheila turned Kelly around and kissed her avidly as their slippery breasts comingled in a long soapy slippery hug. "You made me feel wonderful, Kelly. I love being here with you." How can I not kiss her again? "That may be the best I ever had." Through a steamy fog on the mirror they saw their...

LightningChapter 8

The morning Sheila had to go, she pulled Kelly into the double shower. Kelly soaped her and looked with her blue eyes directly into Sheila's, then engulfed Sheila in her arms and said, "Give me your tongue." They nourished on kisses and tongues and naked wet soapy bodies throbbing. Sheila ran her hands down Kelly's back to her ass and teased her slippery anus. When she put her finger slightly in then out several times, Kelly's ass clinched and her hips thrust in excitement. Then, Sheila...

Lightning in a BottleChapter 12 Not Just Another New Years Eve

December 10, 1980 November turned into December; Thanksgiving passed and Christmas approached. Patti and Evie were regular visitors in our house every Saturday. I was proud of myself for arranging that weekly get-together; it was proving to be quite beneficial not only for myself and both of them, but for my family as well. I continued to focus on my school work. I believed things were improving drastically, especially in French class, where Patti's assistance had given me a big boost. The...

Lightning in a BottleChapter 32 Snow Money and Romance

February 11, 1983 We had a show scheduled for this evening; we'd booked a Friday night slot at one of the campus pubs. It was to be my first gig with Lightning in a Bottle that wasn't specifically for friends and family. But it didn't happen. Oh, don't get the wrong idea. It wasn't because of any misdeeds on my part, or a resumption of intra-band discontent. Not this time. Rather, the blame fell squarely on Mother Nature. The snow started falling early that afternoon, and within a few...

Lightning in a BottleChapter 53 The Ugly Side of Publicity

August 19, 1984 "You know that guy who's been trying to get my attention all summer? The one that tries to talk to me after almost every show?" Evie, who'd been uncharacteristically quiet and pensive, had finally decided to open up. It was a Sunday evening; we'd done an afternoon show, and the three of us were now lounging around in the apartment that Evie shared with my girlfriend. Inez and I had been trying to draw Evie out, which was a task that we'd never needed to undertake...

Lightning in a BottleChapter 69 The New Normal

October 25, 1986 It would be trite to say that things went back to normal after the wedding and the honeymoon. We certainly settled back into a routine, but things were different now. This was a new normal, a "normal" enhanced with the knowledge that we were living the life we'd dreamed about for so long. At work, the status quo persisted. I put in my forty-hour weeks, resigning myself to the fact that I'd be working there for a while longer. My investments were certainly paying off,...

TRANSIT STRIKE

My name if Jeff. At the time of this story I worked downtown Toronto in a large office building I was twenty five and single. As soon a rumors started about a possible transit strike the people started organizing car pools. We were told we could park around the building at no charge during the strike. I said I didn't need a ride because I would ride my bike.. Everyone knew I rode a motorcycle. Jessica, one of the ladies asked if I could give her a ride so I agreed to give her a ride. Over...

TRANSIT STRIKE 3

Day Five:Friday at last. We were on the road as usual, and a quick run across the 401 to Yonge Street to Queen and we were at the office before 6 a.m. As usual we went for coffee and chatted until time for work. Jess told me she was afraid of what I was going to do to her when I took her home. I replied that she should be but I was going to my place after I dropped her off so I could get my stuff ready in case the strike lasted another week. I then told her that Gail was angry at her and wanted...

Strike Leader

I glanced at the others as I finished with the armor, "Aris make sure you check all the weapons before they are put away. The next time I find one loaded I will take a tail." They laughed as I moved to the next warrior and began inspecting his armor. They went quiet and I glanced at the hatch and straightened, "sir?" The group strike leader gestured, "let your second finish." I nodded and glanced at Aris, "no slack." He moved towards me and I turned and walked towards the hatch,...

Pilots Strike

We would never have met Johnny if it hadn't been for the airline pilots strike in '89, normally we would have flown from Adelaide to Melbourne for a wedding but due to the strike we had to drive. Which meant we ended up meeting Johnny, more unusual was because it was a friend that asked us if we could give a lift to a friend of his son, complicated but we ended up picking the guy we had never met from Fullarton, which was out of our way and taking him to Melbourne.Johnny was an 18 year old...

Lightning Over Arizona

Everything that could have gone wrong this morning did go wrong.  We were rushing to the airport to catch our flight.  Gabriel whined the whole way there saying that we were late because of me.   I was so worn out by Gabriel’s bad attitude for like the past week now that I didn’t want to argue with him.   I don’t know what was bothering him, but I could tell you this, I was not about to let him ruin my trip to Arizona. We boarded the plane and looked for our seats and out of the blue I got...

LightningChapter 9

She went home to call Greg. "I went to the hospital to see Madeline. She was very helpful and she is one of your real fans." She sighed audibly. "I felt much better after talking to her. She is a gold mine of information." "She is a princess. What she says she will do, she does. That's so rare in volunteers. Everyone wants her for committee work. She adopted me when my wife left." Before she thought, she blurted emotionally, "Why did she leave you?" After a long silence on the...

Lightning in a BottleChapter 29 Dysfunctional Outfit

Thanksgiving 1982 It was decided that we would have our first band practice the second Friday after Thanksgiving break at the home of Inez's uncle and aunt. This would give Inez a couple of extra weeks to recover fully. We'd ease back into it slowly, perhaps having a couple more practices before Christmas. Of course, we all had final exams to wade through as well, except, of course, Eileen. We'd try to get together over winter break a couple of times, and then hit the ground running as...

Lightning in a BottleChapter 35 PacMan Fever

May 2, 1983 Life went on. I caught sight of Julia multiple times over the next several days; she said nothing to me, and made it a point to avert her eyes whenever I was in the vicinity. It was next to impossible not to run into her frequently, for every time I entered or exited the dorm, it was necessary to pass by her room. It continued to amaze me how her feelings toward me had changed that much, that fast. And it annoyed me to no end that I'd never really gotten a proper explanation for...

Lightning in a BottleChapter 37 Down to Two

June 2, 1983 "Could I speak to Larry Weatherby, please?" I asked the receptionist as soon as she picked up the phone. "One moment," she intoned, before putting me on hold. I waited for a couple of minutes. The recipient of this call, a good friend of mine in the other timeline, and a not-quite-as-close friend in this one, was presumably being summoned from somewhere in the warehouse. I recalled that the prevailing policy was rather lax about phone calls while working, and I knew I...
