Dominus stood in the flickering torch-lit entryway awaiting the call into his master's presence. He had no way of knowing that at that exact same moment, in a place immeasurably distant, another servant of another, and far brighter lord, was awaiting permission to enter his master's presence. He was, of course, aware of the existence and cunning of his enemies. His hatred of them was unrivaled, even among his compatriots. Dominus never allowed an opportunity to destroy one of them pass by.

As Dominus awaited the forthcoming audience with his master, he wondered what his next assignment would be. His mind began conjuring images of possible tasks, all of which involved the wholesale slaughter of enemy soldiers. As he was reveling in the imagined bloodshed that would (hopefully) be forthcoming, the doors to the throne room opened to admit him. The dark, winged, humanoid creature walked into the room, out of the flickering torchlight into a vast chamber who's size was concealed by the almost total absence of light. In fact, the only light in the room came from eight torches: seven in a semicircle behind the huge, cavernous throne and one next to a podium which stood about five feet in front of the throne.

Dominus quickly approached the podium. Once he reached the solid gold stand, he stood at attention and waited for his master to speak.

:Dominus." The voice was low, raspy, old. "I have a new task for you."

"It is my honor to serve you, master."

"Our esteemed adversary is planning a new assault upon us. I recently received a report from a reliable intelligence source that he has begun assembling a new strike force. I don't yet know whom he has chosen to head it or what its targets will me. All my spy has determined is the force's goal: Undermine our control, and steal our hold on the world from us. Your task is to find this team and stop it. You may have all the men and resources that you need. I don't care how you stop them, Dominus, or what you do to them, just stop them from causing major damage!" His voice rose with tightly controlled fury, "Our hold on this world is shaky enough without their direct interference! After all, much as it pains me to admit it, humanity tends to look to his direction for leadership. Something they inherited from Adam and Eve, I suppose."

Dominus smiled cruelly at the thought of the bloodshed and death he would visit upon his adversaries, he would repay them for all the bloodshed and crimes they had visited upon his kind during the War.

"So, go!" Boomed the voice from the shadows.

Dominus gasped, smile vanishing. He bowed low until he had retreated from the throne room. As he as he straightened and turned he heard the heavy doors close behind him and, strolling down the torch lit halls, he smiled again in expectation of the power and pleasure that would coarse through his veins when the slaughter began. Yes he thought, this will be very pleasurable indeed! He laughed, a low chuckle that made the skin crawl and the body shiver. His laughter echoed softly down the hallway behind him as he walked.

Edward's body pounded with excitement as he surveyed the structure before him. They stood in front of a large brick building that was home to many of the Enemy's soldiers. Edward thought it was a grotesque piece of architecture. The dark red building was large and imposing. The main entrance consisted of a pair of huge, ornamented, wooden doors. Above the doors was an enormous stained glass window. Perched on the pitched roof above the entrance was a towering spire which served no purpose other than to draw the attention of anyone who happened to see the building.

The new commander and his men were all disguised so as to conceal their presence and identity. They had quelled the light which normally radiated from them, which allowed them to hide in the nearby trees and bushes. The plan was to remain undiscovered until the moment they attacked.

After he had ensured that his squad was ready, Edward sent a quick mental query to each of his captains and confirmed that they and their troops were in place and awaiting the command to assault the target. He quickly assessed the situation, confirmed that the time was right and instantly relayed a single word command to his army, Begin.

Edward then rose quickly to a crouch and scuttled towards the structure. He was unable to hear the troops that followed him; they were too silent for even he supernaturally sensitive ears to detect.

Finally, they were next to the building. Edward and his men spread out along the wall they were against; He knew without seeing that the other squads were doing the same thing along the other walls of the building. Edward risked a peak through the window that he was beneath. He saw his enemy's forces standing inside the room.

The were interacting with the humans who were also inside the room: flying around, possessing the humans, causing them to enter into violent spasms and speak gibberish in halting voices, and generally causing huge amounts of spiritual chaos. Edward felt a twinge of pity for those humans, they were unable to see or understand all that was being done to them. They were unaware of the spiritual bonds that Enemy had placed around their hearts and minds. Though other mortals would see only normal, well-dressed, ecstatic people of various ages, Edward could see their immortal souls and these were weak and sickly, bound hand and foot in heavy chains of ignorance and slavery. The mighty angel felt tears well up in his eyes as often happened when he beheld spectacles such as this, he vowed to himself that he and his forces would help put a stop to the Enemy's control of the world, if only so that he would never again have to witness this sight again.

A tap on his shoulder brought him back to his senses; he glanced offer his shoulder into the face of one of his warriors who was looking at him quizzically. Edward nodded that he was fine and raised his eyebrows in askance. The soldier quickly confirmed that all was ready. Edward then sent another mental command to his men, Execute.

Edward spun off the wall and jumped through the window, of course as the window was physical, and Edward was spiritual, he had no effect on the window itself, he simply rolled through the opening. His effect on the creatures inside the room was as stunning as if he had, in fact, crashed explosively through the large, ornate window and sent shard of it's brightly colored glass hurtling across the room. The humans, of course, remained undisturbed, but the Enemy's forces abruptly ceased their gallivanting and stared at Edward. Edward drew his sword and his disguise was instantly purged from him as his true nature was revealed in a blinding flash of light. He held his sword high above his head and shouted at the top of his lungs,

"For the Light!"

Suddenly the entire room seemed to implode as one hundred spiritual warriors burst into the building, some through windows, as Edward had done, some through the walls, and closed doors, and even a few were gliding amongst the rafters after having streaked straight through the roof. Half of the force was concentrated in this room, the other three squads having been detailed to clear out the kitchens and communal dining area as well as the basement rooms where the spirits aided in the enslavement of the young. Even though only about fifty of Edwards soldiers were in the room, the light radiating from them was so blinding that it is impossible to describe.

The shock and awe on the part of the Enemy soldiers and their seeming inability to believe that they were under attack here, in their very stronghold, was so great that Edward was able to cut down two of them before the spell of surprise broke. One of them, a leader to judge by his size, drew his sword and bellowed, "Destroy them!"

The other creatures drew their weapons as well. Nasty, disgusting blades they were, long, sharp, wickedly barbed, and many of them dripping a foul-smelling ochre. Edward shuddered to think what would happen if one of those things was to strike him. Then the dark ones charged, and the battle was joined in earnest. Edwards found himself pressed on three quarters at once, forcing him to spin and parry his simple, elegant blade as fast and accurately as possible. Through a series of skillful maneuvers, he was able to catch the blade of the creature on his right and forced the fighter directly into the path of the center monster's thrust. A quick thrust of his own caught the unfortunate soldier on his left in the throat and left Edward free to kill the center opponent at his leisure as he struggled to extract his barbed sword from the back of his fallen comrade.

Spirited

16-year-old Heather fumed in the back seat of her parents’ car. This had been their second day of traveling across the American Midwest, heading to their new home, and she was bored stiff. Even worse, it seemed that her dad had gotten them lost trying to find the world’s largest ball of twine or something. “I think it’s just around the bend,” he said for what she estimated was the dozenth time in the last hour. Heather sighed. The dirt road they had been following ended at an old wooden...

Spirit of James

Thanks to Jim for editing! I first met James at a Christmas party my parents were throwing. He was the contractor they had hired to put together the new house they were building as an anniversary gift to each other. It would be a lot bigger than the two-storied, three-bedroom house I'd grown up in, which meant that there would be plenty of room for either me or my sister if we needed it, which wasn't something I was about to complain about, considering that at twenty-four, I was about to run...

Spirit Of Adonis

Adonis growled harshly, though his agony stemmed from something other than pain. He moaned and groaned; his limbs moved heavily with a dead weight. The Greek attire he wore was tattered, torn, and hung from an equally torn body. There was no more blood. Actually, there was no pain either, and it felt very odd. He had yet to acclimate himself, being suspended in the Middle World and the world below it. The Middle World still coursed through his veins, the Under World, through his soul. It was...

Spirit Lover

It's four a.m. the feel of your soft caress down my back awakens me. I turn over to say I love you and kiss you and no one is beside me. I close my eyes wondering if I was dreaming when I felt your touch. I feel you presence as you arms pull me closer and our lips touch. The intensity of your kiss make my body tremble clear to my soul. I hear our hearts beat in unison as your spirit intertwines my soul. I feel your touch as it sets me afire and you utter, "Kandy, I love you!" I touch...

Spirit of Love

Carmen always had sad eyes, but they had always been sad in a sort of loving way, like a child’s eyes when a beloved pet has passed on. Sad, yes, but always with the basic understanding that everything was fine, that events had happened because they were supposed to. Now, however, they were just sad. They stared blankly out upon the world without really seeing anything . . . least of all, me. But then, it was all because of me that she had that look. All because of that Valentine’s Day night,...

Spirit of Halloween Nightmare

Four years ago "Mmmmm, oh honey, ummm what a nice way to wake me. I thought you got enough last night, stud." When I forced one eye open, I saw the clock read 5:35 A.M.! He was up an hour earlier than usual, really, really UP! Though kneeling between my ankles with his chilly tongue teasing up my thigh, his big sausage sized snake weighed heavily on my calves. Spirit QuestChapter 2

I awoke from the bad nightmare only to find myself lying in tall grass. At first, I didn’t realize that, while the temperature was warm, it was a lot cooler than it should have been for late August, even this early in the morning. I thought that somehow, I had landed clear of the wreckage, and miraculously survived. Having taken extensive first aid training, rather than try to get up, I instead tested each appendage for signs of injury. Fingers and toes seemed pain-free, as did wrists,...

Sixteen weeks later, Drogo and several of our Clovis Class ships arrived in Valencia, returning many of our troops, as well as the deposed emperor, his Palace Guard, the Emperor’s banner for Clovis’ collection, and some surprise guests. For Laura Lyn ‘Oops, that was it,’ Lola muttered as she past the dirt road she should have turned left on. She backed up, made the turn, and headed south 2.7 miles according to her directions. The sun was blistering and it hadn’t rained in weeks. Dust fogged the inside of the old ’87 Grand Am she’d driven since she was in high school, making it hard to breathe.

Sue struggled over which costume to wear to the ADULTS ONLY party for which we were already late. Though she favored a body-paint only getups, there was no way to do it right and dry in seconds. I jokingly suggested she could be ready in two minutes if she went in her long blonde wig and boots, otherwise totally nude, as Lady Godiva. She slapped my arm. "What? When Abbie and her husband Mel bought an old Victorian mansion on the outskirts of the city, they did so with two goals. The first was to convert the big, run-down house into a bed-and-breakfast. Their plan was to rent out rooms to businessmen tired of cookie-cutter motels, providing a more home-like atmosphere. They were reasonably close to the city’s financial center and since Mel was an executive with a major insurance company, he had the kind of contacts to make this feasible. Their...

Spirit RenewedChapter 1

I fell back into the chair in the dressing room. This was the 40th -or was it the 45th concert that we had played in as many days. I had four hours before I had to be at the airport. After being in an enormously successful Rock band for a few years, branching out on my own had been good for my career. The downside was being in a different city every night or two, sometimes you can't even remember who you really are. I could hear the activity as the stage was pulled down and packed onto the...

I was still confused and even angry, but I couldn't stand for her to be in tears. I rose up enough to wrap my arms around her and held her to me while she calmed down. The girls came in after a few minutes and Kelly wondered why her mother was upset. Donna told her not to worry about it now and we all would sit down and talk later. We had a nice, if subdued dinner and the women headed toward home with the promise that I would visit there tomorrow. I tried to sleep that night, but the events...

I woke up fairly late in the morning, still dressed in the tracksuit. I had nothing else to wear so I gave my hair and fur a quick brush, it seemingly behaving better since there was lots more of it, then headed down the stairs. Mum sitting doing some work at the kitchen table, "Morning sleepy head," she said, "Want some breakfast?" "I can get it," I said. Grabbing some cereal and munching away. I pushed the hurt to the back of my mind and examined my cage more carefully in the hopes of finding some way out of this nightmare. It was made of thick steel sections welded together. I woke the next day barely able to move. The area around one of my eyes was so swollen that I couldn't open it. Every move was torture. My fur hid the damage mostly. I was probably bruised all over but it was only places where they had broken the skin with the fur matted with blood that you could see the damage they had wrought. Sandra came to rub salt in my wounds, with another round of her "training". By the end of the day I had gone from barely able to move to completely unable to...

Spirit QuestChapter 3

Before I returned to Audoflede and the others, Clovis and I established a code of sorts. Using Audoflede’s name at the beginning of a message I sent would indicate that the message was true. Mentioning Gotberga’s name would indicate that an immediate attack against the Romans was necessary. Mentioning neither name would signify danger, probably an imminent attack on Tournai. The women were relieved when I returned from the castle. Audoflede was going stir crazy by the afternoon since she...

Surprisingly, I wasn’t in as much trouble as I thought I’d be when I got back to the castle. In fact, the women easily forgave me for sneaking off this morning to work. In addition, by the time our harvest was complete, I had already made a quick trip (for this time period, anyway), sailing from Rouen to Valencia and back. In Valencia, I found an estate I liked and hired a man named Andagus to run it. Andagus was excited about the scope and the enormity of my plan. Spirit QuestChapter 11

I sent a missive to Clovis requesting permission to purchase large tracts of the just conquered Eastern Roman Empire. Along the coast in what would be modern Lebanon I wanted to grow bananas. Along the coast in what would be modern Israel I wanted to grow sugar cane. Along the Nile valley, it would be cotton, sugar cane, and bananas. Land around Constantinople would be for growing a delightful spice as of yet unknown in Europe, Asia, and Africa. My query received a positive...

Spirit QuestChapter 12

Another load of goods for Izem sailed at the end of January, along with fifty troops to accompany his caravan to Tissinte and back. Tissinte, the name of my new town at the salt mine, was derived from the Berber word for salt. Ten of the troops who made the first trip were among those to continue helping the rest learn the Berber and Soninke languages. The new troops had been practicing the languages for three months, and even learned to ride camels. We’d brought fifty camels to Valencia to...

Spirit QuestChapter 13

Our first group of homing pigeons was finally ready to test. We’d raised hundreds in each capital and cities along the routes to other capitals and then transferred groups to different cities. They’d make their way home to where they were born and raised when released, taking our messages with them. The initial messages asked what time of day the pigeons arrived at each relay station (early morning, mid-morning, noon, etc.), and then each capital. Clovis’s first message, talking about the...

Spirit QuestChapter 14

When the train left Valencia to take Clovis and the governors home, Emperor Reba and his wives stayed behind to catch the next ship home. Izem and I planned the attack on the Vandals at Carthage. He was sure he could get 50,000 troops within three months so we set the attack date for September 1. I would provide three thousand ground troops armed with rifles, and two hundred mortar crews. The rifle infantry and mortars would cover the west wall since there was no other way for the people to...

THE Harem Tales 4 We Gotta Get Outta This PlaceChapter 7 If I Had My Way

After roughing out the expectations and rules of conduct for the new colony and anyone aboard her vessels, a video presentation was prepared. It would be shown first to the extracted crew of the Summer Paradise prior to their boarding of their new ship. After any adjustments, it was to be used in the initial orientation of all of the new colonists and crew additions... The screen cleared showing four individuals; a man and woman clad in Civil Service gray without rank insignia, a man clad in...

Market ForcesChapter 69 Conference Call

Tricia's downfall caused some consternation in the organisation for a while. Nobody likes to see a colleague suddenly taken out like that. On the other hand most people seemed to have had a belly full of having their ears bent by Tricia's constant, "Why won't they let me lead a collection?" so the general view was that she had it coming to her. Harry and Rick were pretty nervous in case Freddie came gunning for them too. After all it had been Harry's call, in the end to give Tricia the...

5 One in the Hand Is WorthChapter 26

The next morning, technically later that same morning, I arrived early at Civ class. Even though I'd managed to get very little sleep, I wanted to be there in case Kendall also came early and wanted to talk before Hayley, Wes, and Cynthia got there. When I saw them approaching and Kendall still hadn't shown up, I put my jacket on an empty seat next to me to hold it for her in case the row filled up. I shrugged when Wes gave me an inquisitive look as he sat by me on the other side. We...

BAD GIRL

I came home five hours late and ready for trouble.Daddy was waiting for me in the living room, sitting in his big easychair and staring at the front door. He had his belt in his hands, thelong black leather one that he usually wore. Daddy held it doubledover across his thighs and I had the impresson that he'd been sittinglike that for a long time already.I didn't say anything. I just swallowed hard and closed the doorbehind me with a loud snick sound. The house was very quiet and thatmade it...

SaralindaChapter 17 Gary

"Hey – check out this one – Kaihalulu Beach - One of Hawaii's prettiest beaches, but difficult to reach. The remains of a caved-in cinder cone have created the beautiful cove in which this crescent-shaped beach is found. Located on the far side of Ka'uiki Hill south of Hana Bay. Drive to the Hana Community Center and follow the path that passes an old cemetery. The path crosses to the shoreline and up and along the face of the outside of the cinder cone. At the end of the path you'll find...

Staying Late Pays Off

Sophie slid in behind the wheel of her Nissan Leaf. It still smelled like new car and it made her happy every time she got into it. "God dammit!" she swore. Sophie was currently working on a case for a client charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was accused of stabbing his roommate in the leg with a kitchen knife. She had been researching similar cases since two o'clock...

The Ultimate Doll Chapter 2

Lynn ’s shock at seeing the interior of the seemingly innocent looking barn was immediate and unmistakable. “What have I gotten myself into, this time?” she thought to herself. The walls and floor were carved out of large cobble stones, the ceiling was made of large hand- hewn beams and rough timbers, as it would have been done in the middle ages. Looking around the room, she saw item after item of torture, depravity and abuse. This cleverly disguised barn was set up as a medieval torture...

Ranchland Chapter 7

Ranchland - Chapter 7 Ben surveyed the Longhorn herd’s survival after their first Chinook experience. There had been some losses, but nowhere near as bad as he had expected. Out of a herd of two hundred head, they’d lost six. Maybe, he thought, these Longhorns would prove to be more adaptable than most of the local cattlemen believed. If, by spring, they had proven themselves, there’d be a strong market for calves, with a little marketing on his parrt. As Amy had the only sizeable...

ChroniclesChapter 7B

And back to Dave... I missed the call, of course, despite disentangling myself from the bed clothes and getting downstairs in record time. When I did finally find my phone, though, I saw a missed call from May, and a new voice mail. Which latter I ignored in favour of simply phoning her back ... and got her voice mail. Which was annoying, given that I knew she'd called only minutes before, but somehow not a surprise. I picked up the message instead, listening to it as Kath came down the...

Maxine Stones New LifeChapter 387

For years it seemed that I did nothing important for days, then all of a sudden it was run like hell. Such was the case that first week back. I did almost nothing for of the first half of it, then all of a sudden I had people demanding my attention all day and up into the night. At midnight on that Friday I found myself sitting in the parking lot of the waffle house in Tryon. Beside me in the passenger seat was more or less a million dollars cash inside a sealed blue plastic twenty gallon...

El PasoChapter 38

Posted: August 27, 2007 - 02:57:28 pm I stood silently off to the side of the back door until my eyes adjusted to the dimly lit interior of Rosa’s Cantina. The back door was the route to the outhouses, and was down a short hallway that had a door on either side. A partition about six and a half feet tall screened the hallway from the interior of the bar. When I was sure of my vision, I walked quietly down the hall and looked around the partition. George Howard was sitting at a table with...
