I woke up to an empty bed once more. Normally this was for the purely practical reason that I came in late and Jan left early. Once, not wanting to rouse Jan in the middle of the night I decided it would make more sense to sleep in the tiny fourth bedroom we used as a study. That did not go down well with Kim and Katy, for whom parents always slept together. Those are the rules of the child and Jan and I had to abide by them.
