On the other side I followed a game trail I had used a number of times and had repeated success. Approaching the area, I was interested in I was surprised by motion to my left. I turned and was confronted by a group of the gorilla a****ls. The group consisted of two males, two females and three young. While processing this encounter of gorillas only thirty feet from me, I was aware of movement to my right in a tree. Cautiously, I turned but with glances back and forth finally found the source of the movement in the tree. It was two boys from the native people standing on branches and clinging to the trunk about fifteen feet in the air. The gorillas seemed curious but the boys were terrified. But my sudden presence seemed to concern the gorillas more.
Then to make things more confusing, I heard more movement through the undergrowth from my back. I anticipated it might be b**st so I called out to him, “b**st?” No answer. Then I knew it wasn’t b**st because I heard more movement ahead of me. I had an arrow already on the string of my bow in case I saw some game and I slowly turned to look behind me. There was nervous movement from both the gorillas and the boys now. As I made the 180 degree turn, a dog came crashing into the open. I brought up my bow quickly while pulling back and instantly sent the arrow into the skull of the lead dog. I immediately drew another arrow as another dog came from the same direction and hit that one in the front of the chest. Two down, but how many are coming?
I heard more commotion behind me, drew another arrow and spun back, found a dog charging the gorillas and hit it in the side right behind the front legs. I drew another arrow and scanned for my next best target when I spotted a female gorilla chasing down a young, catching it but now twenty feet away from the rest of the group. A dog was now between them and the group and leapt at the female. The female dropped the young to take on the dog. Another dog was already approaching the young now that it was on its own on the ground. I took careful aim and hit it in the side behind the front leg. I ran for the young, grabbed it and swung it onto my back having seen the adults do that with the young. The young did grab onto me and hung on. I yelled again, “b**st! Help!” I took another arrow, strung it, and looked for my next target. A dog was jumping at the tree with the boys in it but did not seem likely to be able to reach them so turned my attention elsewhere.
I eased my way back to the female who retrieved the young off my back. Before I could act again, I sensed something to my side, saw a dog in midair and dropped to the ground just in time to avoid being hit. I dropped my bow in the process and while focusing ahead of me could not located it without taking my eyes off the dogs in front of me. The one that missed me was now joined by another and were squared off in front of me ready to charge. My confidence was waning. One dog I figured I could handle but two? In the next instant they were rushing toward me when one of them was suddenly pulled away but I was totally focused on the remaining one. My knife drawn, I waited until the dog was in the air, crouched and drove my knife into its stomach, twisted and pulled it out. I turned and followed the body to the ground and thrust again into the side of the head with both hands. I looked up and saw the larger male with the other dog in its hands. I came up to him and drove my knife into the side of the dog, killing it in the gorilla’s hands.
I looked for my bow, saw it, but was stopped by the appearance of more dogs. I backed defensively and bumped into the gorilla behind me. I took two steps forward to give myself room to react when a black monster landed in their mist and dogs went flying. I replaced my knife and found my bow again. b**st pulled back and I took up position next to him. As a dog tried to approach from the side, I shot him in the side. Another jumped for b**st but was met by b**st’s large paw and was sent into the nearest tree. The dog was stuck to the tree which didn’t register immediately until I noticed that it was impaled on a broken branch. The dogs seemed to have had enough and slunk off back into the jungle. I went around the carnage, retrieving my arrows and making sure the dogs were dead. They would be food for the many scavengers of the jungle tonight.
b**st and the gorillas appeared to be in defensive posture towards each other. I walked between them, put my hand on b**st’s head and said, “It’s okay. We all helped each other against a common danger. Everybody relax.” I heard “Good”, but I heard it twice. I looked at b**st and then the largest gorilla who had moved several steps closer to me. I stepped to him and said, “You understand me?”
“Yes”
“How?”
“How you speak like us?” And then it hit me that during all this, the gorillas must have been communicating back and forth for their defenses and along the way, my processor was accumulating data for the language.
“Hard to explain. Friend?”
“Friend”
I walked to the tree that held the boys. They were talking and calling out. From the earlier contact with the people on the plains and the talk from the boys now, I was also getting feedback on conversion for them. I said, “Get down.” They didn’t move and only looked at b**st and the gorillas. I asked b**st to back up and give them more room. “Get down now or I’ll come up and throw you down.”
They came down. I held each boy by the arms and walked them toward the others. b**st came up. I looked at the boys and told them to stay still. I asked b**st to lie down on his side. I asked b**st to open his mouth and I put my hand inside, and then asked for a kiss. I pulled the boys forward and put their hands on b**st’s side. The gorillas were watching all this and especially the young ones. The one that ran off earlier ran up to me and grabbed my leg. The female approached tentatively and stopped five feet away. I picked up the young one (amazingly heavy) and put him on b**st’s back. The female became agitated but the male stopped her. The other two young broke away from the adults and jumped on me also, knocking me over. Laughing, I got back up and put them on b**st’s back also. Soon the boys were also playing on b**st with the gorilla young.
I walked around b**st and the noisy young and stepped to a point just in front of the gorillas. Putting my back to them was also purposeful to show my trust. I heard movement and the gorillas stepped up to be alongside me. The female touched my shoulder and the large male did also. I looked up at them and smiled. For the first time I had the real opportunity to gage them when close enough. The larger male when standing was at least eight feet tall. In the classic crouch he was five feet. And the rest of his body was proportioned like a gorilla. He was huge. I said, “Good” and pointed the gorilla and people young together.
“Good”, they said. “Thank you”
In front of us came eight of the native people with bows and spears at the ready. I held up my arms and said, “No. Friends. Look.” I pointed to the young playing and then at the dead dogs around us. I walked around the young and b**st and approached them and indicated to lower their weapons.
I indicated the dogs and what had happened and that the boys had been in the tree. The boys seemed to just notice their people at that time and rushed to them talking and laughing. I understood some of what they were saying which related more detail to the events with the gorillas and dogs and my and b**st’s appearance. They seemed satisfied, talking among themselves quietly. Pointing to the boys they said, “Thank you.” Pointing to the gorillas they asked, “Friends?”
I turned to the gorillas and looked. I took two steps toward the gorillas and asked them, “You and the people, friends?”
The large male looked at me and then at the people. He looked back at me, “Friends, if good for you.”
“They are good for me.”
I turned back to the people, “They are friends if you are friends and I am friend with both of you. Friends?”
“Yes. Thank you.”
“Talk to your people. The dogs are making the jungle dangerous. For all of us.”
The people left.
I returned to b**st, dropped my bow next to him, took a young off him and then another and held them on my hips and walked them to the females. The large male walked up to b**st and carefully took the other off b**st. b**st and he were wary of each other still. Two dominant males may be the last to totally accept each other.
The gorillas turned and left. b**st and I were left alone. I asked him, “Are you okay? Hurt anywhere?”
‘No, good. You?’
‘I’m good, too. Thank you for coming. This was a bad one. The dogs are getting more aggressive to come this far into the jungle and attack the gorillas and me.’
‘You did well, Alexa. You didn’t need me, I don’t think.’
I looked at him and hugged him. ‘I always need you.’
‘Lagoon?’
‘No, I didn’t get a chance to get my birds. And I want the others to get further away. We don’t need them to know where we live. Walk with me, please. With each of these battles, my need to be close to you increases. For security, for reassurance that you are here, with me, for me. Understand?’
‘Alexa. I will be here for you. You will be for me. We know that. This place dangerous, but mostly dogs. Otherwise, good. Good home.’
I had to agree. This was, indeed, feeling like a good home in the making.
