Do you remember the day the Great Shift happened?
Well of course you do. No one shall ever forget that day. It must be
fifteen years ago now when it happened. I remember it all too well.
I was just five when it happened. A little girl playing in the park innocent
to the world. I notice you did not look surprised when I told you this man
before you in his thirties was once a little girl. Nor should you be
surprised. After all many people instantly changed gender on that day.
And many found themselves a different age altogether. I was one such
person.
As I was saying. I was happily playing in the park that day. It was a
sunny afternoon and I was a happy little girl, for Daddy had bought me a
brand new dress.
My Mother and Father sat nearby under the shade of an old oak tree as I
played with my dolls. They cuddled each other tenderly. Sleepy in each
others arms.
It was then that I noticed a man walk over and slump down on the bench
opposite me. He was a young man. Tall and handsome with short black
hair, pale skin and large brown eyes. He wore a pair of jeans and a T-
shirt if I recall.
What drew my attention to him the most was the sad look upon his face.
Something recently had depressed him. I felt sorry for him and wanted to
go over and comfort him but did not dare. After all Daddy forbid me to
go and talk to strangers.
It must have been obvious that I was staring at him for after awhile he
looked up and over in my direction. It was then that I felt a sudden
dizziness come over me. I gave out a small cry and realized that it had
not been with my voice.
When I got my senses about me I suddenly realized I was now sitting
down. What's more standing across from me was my own body. The
little girl in the yellow dress stood there looking about with great calm.
Maybe it had really been shock, I don't really know.
I looked down at my body and was shocked to see it clothed in the jeans
and T-shirt I had seen on the man only moments before.
I quickly stood up and marveled at how tall I was. My body felt strange
and alien. Sudden realization dawned upon me. I now was that man. I
was in his body. I started to scream and scream, only they were no longer
the screams of a little girl. They were the screams of a man.
It was then that I could hear the other shouts, screams and cries of
surprise from all over the park. I quickly looked to where my parents
were and saw them staring at each other in surprise. Were they still my
parents? Or just some strangers trapped in their bodies.
I couldn't bear it and ran off crying.
For the next few hours I wandered the streets sometimes crying
sometimes numb. I was quite lost. I don't know why I had run off like
that. Before that day I would never have dared stray out of sight from my
parents.
At some point I over heard a radio left on in somebody's garden bringing
the news that this had happened all over the world and perhaps some
ninety- percent of the worlds populations had been switched.
I marveled at this. How had such an event occurred?
Amongst all this I gradually began to realize I was thinking more clearly,
more rationally. I started to control my emotions with far greater ease. I
was able to take things in to a far greater degree than I had before. Why
was this? Well, its simple, I now had the mind of an adult.
I did not return to the park. I doubt my parents would now be there if I
had. And something inside me told me it was best that I did not seek
them out now. Somehow I may add to the confusion.
So I did the only thing I could do. I looked at the I.D. of the man whose
body I inhabited and set of for his home. If he should turn up there,
himself then we could talk over what to do. He never did.
Over the next few months I began to adapt to my new life. I enrolled in
night school to educate my now adult mind while in the meantime
getting a day job at a local shop.
I quickly found that I now possessed a very intelligent brain indeed.
After I had finished my course at night school I moved to another city
and started at University. To be honest I was in many ways avoiding my
old life. Minimizing the chance of being found by my family. It's not that
I didn't want to see them. I yearned too. But I also knew it could cause
grief and confusion. It could also stop me from getting on in my life.
Had I accepted this new body? I suppose I had. I had done a lot of
growing up in the past few months and was now looking towards the
future.
Over the next few years I graduated from University and found myself
head hunted for a Law firm. I went on too be very successful and several
years later found myself pursuing relationships. Two years after that I
found myself a married man.
So here I am now. Happily married and living a far different life than I
would have. Sometimes I wonder how my life would have been had the
great shift never happened. How would I have grown up? Sometimes I
think of the moments I would have had with my family. But looking
back like this has no purpose. I am happy in my life as it is.
Once, five years ago I happened across my parents. I was in a restaurant
with my wife when I saw them at a nearby table. They looked very
happy together. And there sitting across from them was a beautiful
young teenage girl. It made me proud to think that I would have
blossomed into her. I quietly paid the bill and left. I doubt she ever
noticed me. I don't even know if the man who's body I now possessed
had even found himself in that little girls body. I guess I never shall
know.
