Emily cautiously made her way up the stairs and knocked on
the door to Lizzy's room. No answer. She wasn't sure what
to expect, but she opened the door and sure enough, there
was the little dipper on the underside of the top bunk.
Lizzy's computer and piles of books covered one desk while
several of Emily's possessions covered the other.
As she stood there gawking at what she now knew to be her
room, Lizzy walked in and brushed past her without a word.
Emily herself was speechless. Lizzy looked up from her
computer, which she appeared to be pulling some microchips
out of, and saw her sister staring.
"What's the matter?" she asked.
"Nothing, Liz-- Elizabeth. I was just thinking about how
tall you've gotten. You're only two inches shorter than me
now. I remember when you were just a little..."
"Five quarters of an inch, to be exact. It's funny you
should mention that. I'm working on a new device to
accelerate my growth by 0.03%. If I can just modulate the
output right, I could end up taller than Karen, but I'm
running out of time. There are only so many years of growth
left. Could you hand me that torque?"
"The what?"
"The weird-looking screwdriver."
Lizzy's ambitious nature freaked Emily out a bit, so she
resolved to track her own height. She flattened her back
against the wall and marked her height with a pencil. Five
feet even. Anything was possible in this house, and if
Lizzy was going to steal inches from her she wanted to know
it.

The next morning Emily scurried about in the halls like a
mouse trying not to get stepped on. Her day was hectic but
generally uneventful, and that was good. Any semblance of
normalcy was welcome.
At 3:00 she gathered the books she needed to do her
homework and headed for the small bank of phones near the
driveway to call Sarah. She hadn't learned how to get home
from school on her own, and waiting for her sister to pick
her up was better than getting lost.
As she reached for the receiver (and silently cursing the
person who was using the lower of the two phones) someone
came up behind her.
"Emily?"
She was so startled she dropped her bag and books spilled
over the floor. To make matters worse, the owner of the
voice was none other than Justin, who had just seen her
make a fool of herself.
Without saying another word, he stooped to help her pick up
her books.
"Uh, hi Justin," she squeaked, half-wishing she hadn't
spoken.
Her heart was fluttering at about a million beats per
minute. She wanted him to leave before she embarrassed
herself further, but she wanted him to stay.
"I was going to ask if you had any plans after school, but
I guess you must since you were about to call someone. I
didn't mean to scare you."
"Plans? Me? Oh, no, I was just calling my sister to come
pick me up," she said between gasps for air.
'Oh great,' she thought. 'Why don't I just blurt out that
I'm too stupid to find my way home? That'll impress him.'
She let her shoulders slump and nearly lost her books
again.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah," she said with a sigh. "I've just haven't felt like
myself today." Way to go, she thought. Before long I'll be
telling him my age.
"Well, as I was saying, I was just wondering if you'd do me
the honor walking home with me."
'Do you,' Emily thought. 'Sure I'd-- no, no, shut up,
Emily, SHUT UP!'
"Of course! I'd love to!" she giggled a bit louder than she
had intended.
"Cool."

"So you've had a crush on me all this time?"
"Yeah, I know. It's kind of stupid. I mean, a freshman
liking a junior," Emily said, hoping to extract herself
from the conversation before Justin told her what he really
thinks of her. "You probably think I'm a--"
"I think you're great."
"You-- you do?"
"YES, Emily! You're beautiful, smart, nice... what more
could a guy ask for?"
Emily blushed. "I gotta go, but will you call me tonight?"
Emily walked back to her house full of a mixture of desire
and contentment. The hot guy next door was into her, and he
didn't call her Emmie.
She found Lizzy waiting for her in their room.
"Hey Emmie! I finally got it working!"
"Got WHAT working?" Lizzy stood up, her nose level with
Emily's eyes. "Oh my God! You SHRUNK me?!"
"No, silly, I just duct-taped part of my old roller skates
to my sneakers." Lizzy removed her sneaker-skates and was
again five quarter inches shorter than Emily, who sighed in
relief. "Shrunk you..." Lizzy snorted. "That's pretty
funny... actually, that gives me an idea."

Justin called after dinner and invited Emily for a tour of
his treehouse. Guided by the moonlight, the two met in the
middle of the lawn by the old oak tree between their
houses.
"Ladies first," Justin invited.
"I'm hardly a lady," Emily retorted, climbing up the rope
ladder.
"Yes you are. You just don't like to admit it," Justin
stated, following her up. "Don't worry, I won't tell
anyone. It'll be our little secret."
"You mean we're only going to have one secret? You're going
to tell people we were up here? Alone?"
"Why not?" Justin asked matter-of-factly. "I'm not ashamed
to tell the world I've fallen for Emily Thomas."
"Maybe you should be," Emily said, crawling toward the
window that faces her bathroom. "But maybe fallen is the
right word. I'm not some bright, beautiful star. I'm just
some nameless shooting star, making my way down to Earth."
"I don't see what's so bad about coming down to Earth. I
wouldn't have you any other way."

Sarah was waiting for Emily in the living room when she
came home two hours later.
"Ooooh... Emmie and Justin sittin' in a tree," Sarah sang.
"Shut up," Emily snapped, hanging up her coat in the hall
closet. By now Sarah was perched on the edge of the couch,
pregnant with anticipation.
"So did you guys kiss?"
"That's for Justin and I to know."
"I KNEW it. You DID kiss."
"I didn't say that!" Emily yelled as she bounded up the
stairs to her room and opened the door.
"Say CHEESE!" Lizzy chimed from inside their room. There
was a bright flash of light and Emily was knocked off her
feet. When she stood up, she was looking directly into
Lizzy's chest.
"Liz-ZIE! This isn't funny anymore! You can take the shoes
off now," Emily complained, but she looked down and saw
that Lizzy was barefoot. "Oh my God!"
"You gave me a great idea when you thought I shrunk you. I
realized that I could shrink a person by compressing their
molecules and-"
"I don't want to hear the details, just change me back!"
Emily commanded, trying to appear as authoritative as
possible to the 12-year-old who now towered over her.
"I can't."
"WHAT?! I'm going to tell Mom," Emily huffed, turning to
march out the door.
"No, wait," Lizzy said, closing the door before Emily could
get to it. "I mean, I can't change you back now. It'll wear
off in a couple of hours."
"Really?" Emily asked with deep skepticism, to which Lizzy
nodded. "Do you think I could borrow that tomorrow? Just
for the day?"

Emily quietly crept into the girl's locker room after
school the next day to see the cheerleading squad getting
ready for its practice. Karen was being berated by the
captain, who just happened to be Kathleen Quinn.
"And then your big sister came in to save little Emily's
ass. I swear, you Thomases are all alike, and no amount of
pretending is going to give you the body of a real
cheerleader. You'll always be a short, small-chested
bitch." No one spoke, for fear of getting on Kathleen's bad
side.
There was a flash of light and suddenly Kathleen was
sitting on her ass. She dusted herself off and stood to
find herself looking up into Karen's boobs.
"I guess you WOULD know more about being a short bitch than
the rest of us, wouldn't you, Kathleen?" Karen said.
Kathleen screamed and ran for the exit, but Emily was
blocking her path.
"Oh dear, what happened to you?"
After she had seen enough of the terror in Kathleen's eyes,
Emily stepped aside and allowed her though the door...
which just happened to lead to the boy's locker room.

"I don't know what happened," Emily told Justin. "She was
standing there screaming in an oversized outfit like a
maniac!"
"I thought that was her job as captain of the cheerleading
squad?" Justin laughed.
"Why didn't we do this sooner?" Emily mused.
"Do what?"
Emily answered by pulling on his shirt and standing on her
tiptoes to kiss him. It made her feel all tingly inside,
and she got the feeling that he was pulling away slightly
just to make her strain further to maintain the kiss. When
his lips were too high for her she dropped back down and
opened her eyes. He seemed taller and mature for some
reason, but she liked it.
"You know, Emmie, you're really cute and all, but you're
still a kid. I mean, I'm flattered and all, but I think you
should wait a few years."
"Huh?"
"It's just not right for an 11-year-old to be with a 17-
year-old. Why don't you hand out with my little brother?
He's always talking about you."
"Oh NO!" she screamed, realizing her skirt felt like it was
about to fall off.
She ran home, clutching the waistline of her skirt, and
shut herself in her room. Even the doorknobs were
noticeably higher now. The vanity mirror reflected a short
little girl who was only just beginning puberty. The rubber
band she used to hold her ponytail in place seemed to have
slipped a bit. She took it out of her hair and dark brown
hair spilled over her shoulders and down to... down to
where her breasts should have been.
Her breasts had been reduced to a small, puffy chest. She
figured her bra was useless now, hanging loosely and empty,
so she removed it and tucked it away in a drawer.
Looking into the mirror again, she only saw a cute little
girl. If anything, she was the spitting image of Hermione
Granger.
"Petrificus totalus," she commanded, waving a hairbrush at
the mirror. Nothing. Oh well, she thought, it was worth a
try.
She mashed her hair back into a ponytail, bound it with a
new rubber band and measured herself against the mark on
the wall, which was almost out of her reach. She made a new
mark and measured it against the old one... she had lost 7
inches this time. At 4'5" tall, Lizzy really would be five
inches taller and a year older than her.
Emily trudged down the hall to Sarah's room.
"What's up, shrimp?" Karen teased, patting her on the head.
"My bra doesn't fit anymore," she said somberly. Karen
hooked a long finger on the neckline of Emily's shirt and
looked down at her chest.
"Oh, puh-LEEZE. Emmie, you barely have anything to put into
a bra. It's going to be some time before you're ready for a
new one." With that, she walked out of the room and Sarah
gave her a look of pity.
"My bra doesn't fit anymore, but if I don't wear it my
shirt keeps rubbing and..."
"Shhh..." Sarah said quietly, pulling Emily into the room
and closing the door behind her.
"I can't do this, Sarah. I can't go walking around with
this rubbing feeling, but if I wear the bra people are
going to know I can't fill it. Can't you make me a little
older, or a little younger? So I can either wear the bra or
go without it?"
"There, there," Sarah said, wiping a tear from Emily's
cheek. "That's what we have training bras for. Now stand up
straight." Sarah positioned herself behind her sister.
"Don't slouch... come on." Emily straightened herself,
bracing for what she was sure would be an uncomfortable
growing or shrinking.
Sarah made an "O" with her thumb and forefinger, did the
same with her other hand and placed the tips of all four
fingers directly between her nipples. As she pulled her
hands apart her fingers spread apart and traced the shape
of a small bra on Emily's chest. An elastic material
appeared over the traced shape and soon Sarah was holding
part of a training bra on by the corners.
"Now I need you to hold this in place while I make the
straps," Sarah instructed. Emily cupped her hands over the
fabric and Sarah traced her fingers from the corners to the
middle her back and then over her shoulders. "There, how
does that feel?"
"Better." The door opened and Karen came back in.
"Our kid sister is growing up so fast," Sarah gushed.
"Yeah," Karen said. "We might have to get her a bottle
soon."

"I don't need a baby sitter! I'm old enough to stay home on
my own! I'm eleven years old! It's not like I'm a little
third-grader."
"Oh yeah? What if a robber broke into the house and did
this?" Sarah asked, snatching Emily's notebook and dangling
it above her head, just out of reach. "You'd never finish
your homework!"
"Honey, maybe next year," Mrs. Thomas said reassuringly.
"Oh yeah, like some crackpot in a ski mask is going to come
here just to disrupt my homework."
"Stranger things have happened," Sarah shot back.
"Ed, maybe I'd better stay here with Emmie. She's acting
feverish," Mrs. Thomas suggested.
"Don't worry about it, Mom. I know the perfect baby
sitter," Sarah chimed in.
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, I just know she and Emily will get along famously.
I'll go call her up." Sarah darted off toward her room, but
Emily caught up with her in the kitchen and grabbed her
arm.
"What are you doing?" Emily seethed.
"Relax," Sarah said silkily before bounding up the stairs
and calling over her shoulder, "you'll have a great time."

Emily was curled up on the couch with a textbook when the
mystery baby sitter arrived.
"Emmie, I'd like you to meet Tracy. She's going to be
keeping you company tonight." Emily was so startled she
fell off the couch. "Don't worry," Sarah whispered to
Tracy, "she's not usually such a klutz."
"Uh, hi Tracy!" Emily stammered as she struggled to get to
her feet.
"Nice to meet you, Emily," Tracy said cordially, bowing
slightly to shake Emily's hand. Emily was a good 15 inches
shorter than Tracy now and the 5th grader's little hand
seemed lost in the college student's.
"So, uh, how's the air up there?" Emily asked nervously,
not knowing what else to say. She shoved her hands into the
pockets of her jeans and stood with her legs crossed.
"That's Emmie for you," Sarah said, pretending to sound
exasperated. "Ever the little comedienne."
"Aww... how cute," Tracy cooed, causing Emily to blush so
furiously she thought her cheeks would explode.

"Once they were alone, Emily returned to her school work
and Tracy turned on the TV. Emily kept looking up from her
books at Tracy. Her well-developed body and sexy haircut
didn't turn Emily on anymore, but something about her
seemed to stir a long-forgotten longing.
"Do you ever play make-believe?" Emily asked Tracy.
"Aren't you a little old for that?"
"No. Anyone who's too old for make-believe is... well, too
OLD." Emily paused to think about what she just said. She
had intended to say something more profound, but somehow
the words got lost on the way to her mouth.
"Well, I guess I'm just too old then," Tracy conceded,
grabbing a magazine from the coffee table.
"No, I don't think you are. You've probably just forgotten
how. How do you know you're not playing right now?" Tracy
arched an eyebrow inquisitively at her young charge.
"Are you trying to get me to play make-believe?"
"Maybe."
"Well it's not going to work."
"Okay," Emily sighed, appearing to give up. "You used to
play it, though. Right?"
"I guess so, but I don't really remember."
"What?! You could have been anyone in the whole world! You
could have lived their life for a while and you don't even
remember it?!"
"I'll bet YOU don't remember who you've been," Tracy
challenged, trying to deflect the spotlight.
"Sure I do. I was once this guy in like his twenties who
had a girlfriend and a job and everything. But THAT wasn't
very fun. Then I was like Tracy's age, and I went to
parties with her and..." Emily paused. Could she tell
Tracy, or would Tracy just think she's weird? "And I kissed
a girl."
"You kissed a GIRL?" Tracy laughed, gearing up to ridicule
Emily. "Actually, I had a dream like that a few days ago.
Only the girl was kissing me." She seemed lost in thought.
Emily pounced onto the couch like a tigress on the hunt and
crouched next to her sitter.
"Did she like Amy Komori?! I love Amy!"
"Yes," Tracy said quietly, looking a little unsettled. "But
lots of people like her." Emily inched closer,
commandeering Tracy's attention by getting in her face and
locking eyes with her.
"Yeah, but I had never heard of Amy until then," Emily
whispered.
"Emily?" Tracy gasped, with a glimmer of recognition in her
eye. Emily smiled and kissed her. Tracy didn't return the
kiss, but she didn't pull away either. She was
simultaneously petrified by a kiss from an 11-year-old girl
and the sense that behind Emily's eyes was no 11-year-old
girl.
Emily pulled back and the two stared searchingly into each
other's eyes for several minutes. Emily knew she wasn't
physically attracted to Tracy, but there was something
deeper that made her want that kiss.
"Aren't you going to say anything?" Emily asked.
"That was really freaky?" Tracy suggested, but Emily wasn't
letting her off that easily.
"In a good way?" she asked hopefully.
"I think you'd better go to your room."
"But--" Emily sputtered, but Tracy had them on their feet
and was already pushing her toward the stairs. "Tracy, I
think we should talk about this!"
Suddenly Emily shivered and she caught sight of the four-
foot-tall banister post at the foot of the stairs -- whose
top was above her eye level. She whipped around and found
herself looking directly into Tracy's tummy.
"What's to discuss? It's bedtime for little girls. End of
story."
"But?" Emily cried, practically in tears.
"Oh, come on. You're not going to make me carry you." Emily
had no intention of going anywhere. Looking down at
herself, she saw that she was wearing a one-piece, full-
body sleeper... complete with padded feet. She pulled down
the zipper in the front and confirmed that her little
training bra was gone. Her chest was indistinguishable from
a small boy's.
She felt like she was going to faint when Tracy's powerful
arms reached under her own and under her not-so-well-padded
tush and lifted her clear off the ground. Emily wrapped her
skinny legs around Tracy's waist, her arms around Tracy's
neck and cried softly into her shoulder as she was carried
up to bed.
"Good night, little one," Tracy whispered as she turned on
the night-light and closed the door.
