Ties That Bind
A story in one scene
Brenda groaned to herself on waking up, finding that the
now-too-familiar ache in her left hip had returned sometime
during the night, joining the leaden pulses of pain from
her spine. Since the automobile accident that had injured
her and killed her best friend, Brenda had been forced to
give up her independent lifestyle, hoping that given time
her body would recover and she'd at least be free of the
pain. The doctors had said that was possible; they hadn't
looked optimistic, but they said with time and care, it was
possible.
She started patting the night table by her bed; searching
for the medication she had been prescribed. Finding some
bottles, but not the all-important painkillers, she forced
herself to painfully sit up, wincing all the while until
she was propped against the headboard. She could see the
container on the other side of the bed, on the unused night
table. That table had been almost unused since her husband
had gone away, used only briefly for the telephone that
stayed resident on it.
'Why would my pills be over there?' she asked herself,
puzzled. 'Still, maybe if I lean over, I can reach it...'
She began leaning over, ignoring the sharp spikes being
pounded through her kidney, feeling her muscles strain as
she reached, reached, reached... until she collapsed back
on the bed, starting to sob with disappointment.
"Oh, don't cry, Mom." Oh thank God, her daughter was here.
Patti'd take care of her, make it all better. "It can't be
all that bad, can it?"
"Patti, it hurts so bad this morning. It was so
horrible..." Brenda's voice trailed off, as she saw her
daughter had pulled out her compact and begun primping her
face.
"So, Mom, how do I look?" Patti asked, hearing Brenda's
pause.
"Patti! I was talking!" Patti just looked up at her,
unaffected by Brenda's scolding. "But... you look good,
hon. Now, if you'd only start looking a little more
respectable, you'd be able to snag yourself a man. You've
got to start settling down sometime, you know..."
"Nah, I've got my job, you've put aside a trust fund for
me, and I get dates every weekend with your friends' sons.
I've got no reason at all to saddle myself more than that
with useless baggage by settling down with a single man,
now do I?"
"Oh, honey... you don't know what you're missing out on. My
marriage was the happiest time of my life -- well, until
you came along, of course."
"Yeah, but that ended, didn't it? And that man William
you've been fu... I mean, dating, he doesn't show up any
more now that you're injured, does he?"
That brought a surge of anger to Brenda's voice. "So maybe
William is a jerk. But he was just a distraction for me,
not a potential husband. Not every man..."
"No, Mom, the Institute has shown me all the statistics.
Men are stupid, low creatures that always use women.
They've been holding back the human race for all of
history. Their only purpose is a bit of momentary pleasure
- thank you for showing me that, by the way - and that's
all a good woman should require of them. I mean, if they
were any better, they'd be women, right?"
Brenda frowned. Perhaps she was imagining things, but those
words sounded... barbed. "Speaking of the institute, honey,
what's happened with your appointments?"
"Oh, with Dr. Jenkin's death," Patti paused briefly out of
respect for Brenda's loss, "they're running around like
headless chickens trying to wrap up the loose ends.
"Between you and me, I don't think they're going to make
it; a lot of their doctors have been able to find better
paying jobs elsewhere, and there doesn't seem to be much
loyalty without Dr. Jenkin's charisma. Maybe a few will
remain, but they're going to have a hard time, what with
all of those legal challenges the equal opportunities
commission brought against them last year.
"But at any rate, they haven't had the time to worry about
me; in fact, when they looked at my record, they said I
should probably have stopped my shots and therapy years
ago, and started adjusting on my own."
"Oh." Brenda thought it best not to let the conversation
linger on this point. "Well, that's good, honey, if you're
all right, medically speaking. But please, you know Sally
never liked it when you called her Dr. Jenkins; she always
wanted to be your friend. Can't you honor her wishes, now
that she's... gone?"
"Mother darling, she may have been your friend, but to me
she was a doctor and an instructor. I think keeping a bit
of distance from her is only appropriate. And now that
she's gone... well, why should anything or anyone change?"
Patti came over then, pushing her mother down back under
the covers, and tucking the blankets tightly over here.
"Now that you've taken your medicine, I'll be going out.
I've got some errands to run, so I may not be back to check
on you for a few days; give me a ring if anything comes up.
Now, let me just tidy up a few things so you don't feel
like you're living in a pigsty..." She started messing with
the pill bottles near Brenda, collecting them and placing
them in a drawer, while keeping up a loud one-sided
conversation, apparently not hearing Brenda's weak
protests, and then sweeping out of the room, waving good
bye to her mother.
"But... I didn't take my pills..." Brenda finally managed
to say, her words faint in the now empty room.
She looked at her distant pain-killers, the inaccessible
telephone, then at the drawer where the rest of her
medicine now lay buried. She groaned once again, the day
looking even bleaker than before. She missed her health,
she missed her best friend Sally Jenkins, but most of all,
she missed the warm presence of her husband Patrick, who
had been disappeared all those years ago, before her
daughter came to live with her dear mama.
