Soon after they fell, they jerkily pulled themselves to their feet and charged again. "The bear-man wasn't kidding," Nightman said, as he dodged a machete blow and punched a goon in the face.? "These guys don't seem to have any feelings.? Lord help us, we're going to have to seriously disable them or maybe even kill them to stop them." Santi watched the conflict with satisfaction, but made no move to join the fray. "Why is he just standing there, Cat?" Micki asked.? And while the heroes were trying not to permanently harm their foes, their opponents had no such compunctions. "We've got to figure out a way to keep them down without killing them," Nightman yelled, as he broke the jaw of one zombie, who just kept right on fighting.? "Any ideas?" "Yes," El Polverizer said.? "We can use ropes to tie them once we knock them down.? You have some in your utility bag and I have some as well." "Good idea," Nightman replied.? "Penduloso, Tetasina, take these ropes and tie up these devils once we get them off their feet!? Luis, be careful, but see if you can find some more rope in one of these huts nearby.? Polverizer had put on a pair of "shock gloves," another of his inventions, which sent a taser charge through every blow he connected, while Hombre Mono and Rotundo continued to fight the old fashioned way. Nightman knew everyone was getting tired and the bare-chested wrestlers were starting to get bloody from cuts and bruises, while their foes never seemed to run out of energy.? He noted the main advantage the heroes had was they acted as a team, while the goons acted as wild individuals. "How are the cat women doing?" Tetasina asked. Micki and Denuche were still going at it like a pair of whirling dervishes.? "I will kill you all for touching her!" Forgetting the useless jaguars, Cat tackled Santi from behind, breaking his concentration, but his minions continued their organized attack. They held Tetasina down and pulled off the last of her tights, then two of them held her legs apart, while the biggest and oldest of them lowed his pants, pulled out his dick, which was already covered in dried semen from his earlier deprivations with the village women, and prepared to mount the helpless wrestler. "Oh God, no!" she pleaded, as the goon grinned stupidly, exposing gaps and green, rotted teeth.? But, before his penis could hit the mark, there was a blur and a whizzing noise.? His face had a puzzled expression on it - then it fell from his shoulders with the rest of his head,? as blood spurted from the stump that was once his neck.? Micki had left Denuche and used her claws to decapitate the thug.? She said nothing, but she had an expression of madness on her face as she fell upon the others who were holding her friends down.? Body parts and blood filled the air as she did her awful work.? She didn't care if these men were drugged, she didn't care about avoiding killing her foes.? All she wanted to do was enjoy the smell of their blood dripping from? her claws. Somewhere, in the deep recesses of Cat's psyche, Malato-Zu smiled.? Her plan was working perfectly. "My God, she has the blood-lust upon her," Penduloso gasped.? "She really was holding back when she fought my compadres!" Meanwhile, Denuche took the opportunity of Micki's distraction to join Santi in double-teaming Cat.? He pinned her arms behind her, while Santi smashed his huge fists into her face again and again.? Cat wasn't a natural fighter, but she'd had a lot more experience with her new body than either of her foes.? She waited until Santi reared his arm back, then, as he was delivering the blow, she spun around so that he cracked Denuche full force in the back of the head.? The ex-wiseguy fell like the stock market in 1998, and Cat gave Santi a good kick in the nuts that caused him to buckle. "I can beat these bastards," she huffed, as she wiped the blood off her mouth and nose.? "But what did Micki just do?" Suddenly, a shot rang out. *** "This is a mighty curious report, agent Hurle," the deputy director of the FBI told the senior agent standing before him.?? "Not only do you contend the evidence linking Donald Welldon III to the Destroyers is baseless, you say agent Warford, who was working with you on this case, disappeared in El Paso, Texas and has not been seen or heard from since?" "Yes, sir," the agent said.? "Mr. Welldon was able to explain why that piece of plastic with the incriminating serial numbers was found at Destroyers HQ, as stated in my report.? As to the whereabouts of agent Warford, I haven't a clue.? We were at our hotel when he said he was going out to buy a bottle of Wild Turkey.? He took some money, his ID and our rental car and never came back.? Left his clothes, his gun, everything else.? Puzzling." "Puzzling indeed," the deputy director said.? I want you to study that report, then I'm sending you to gather on-site evidence, understand?" "Yes, sir, but doesn't Chicago have superheroes of its own?" "They do, but they're just a bunch of lightweights.? They got to the robbery at the last moment, but couldn't stop it.? In fact, you'll be taking testimony from them when you get on site.? As you're fond of saying, it's all in the report." "Yes, sir." "Dismissed." Agent Hurle left his boss' office and smiled to himself. "Agent Warford will never be found, the Master will make sure of that," he thought, with satisfaction.? Then he lowered his collar and scratched his neck.? The two puncture wounds? were fiery red and beginning to itch. *** At the sound of the gunshot, everyone froze: mercenaries, Luchadores, Protectors and demon possessed all looked in the direction of the retort. There stood Carlos with a pistol he'd kept concealed until now.? And on the ground lay Louis Rodriguez, his life slowly oozing out of a bullet hole in his back. "Carlos... why?" he asked, as he breathed his last. "Thank you for all your help, Louis," Carlos cackled, as he held the idol of Pautaper aloft.? "But life in the jungle never really suited me.? The demon in this idol has been talking to me, from the time the heroes first found it.? It told me all I need do to have power without limit is to say its name." "Nooooo," Cat, Nightman, Micki and Joe Santi all yelled as they rushed to stop the former drug lord.? But they were all too late. "Pautaper," he whispered, and the familiar process began.? "Carlos" was enveloped by a sickly green glow as he started to grow and stretch.? When it was finished, he was 28 feet long from head to tail.? His body was thick and scaly and green and he had short but muscular arms and legs, just like the idol. "That was not meant for you," Santi growled angrily. "What's done is done," Pautaper said, with a sly grin.? "I suggest you join me in leaving this place, unless you want to continue fighting the Cat and her friends for nothing." Fearlessly, Micki leaped at the giant snake, but Pautaper slapped her away with his tail, then used that muscular appendage to smash the ferryboat, rendering it useless.? He grabbed his idol and glided into the river, motioning Santi and Denuche to join him. "Come, we will work together, OK?" Grudgingly, the Bear and the Rat ran into the water and scrambled onto the Anaconda's back. Cat dove into the river and swam furiously after them.? Micki, who wasn't really damaged by Pautaper's blow, soon joined her, but after half an hour the villains were more than a half mile in the lead and still gaining distance.? Cat and Micki turned around reluctantly and headed back to the ruined village. They found Nightman trying to make the best of things.? He had gathered all the captured thugs into one of the less-damaged huts and barred them in there for safekeeping.? He'd also lined up the ones Micki had killed in a neat row next to their guide, even endeavoring to place the various severed body parts with the correct bodies.? Penduloso was comforting Tetasina, who was still crying and seemed to be in shock.? He had found a blanket to cover her, since her costume was in shreds, and was speaking to her in a calm voice. "Go ahead, Nightman," a tired, wet and angry Cat said.? "Go ahead what?" "Tell us 'I told you so,' tell us you warned us to let you merge with the snake before someone else did.? You were right and I was wrong." "There's plenty of blame to go around, Cat," Nightman said, wearily, as he added fuel to? a small fire he had started, to help Cat and Micki dry themselves.? "Micki warned us that 'Carlos' was a drug lord.? I should have had him in restraints the moment we got back to this village.? But, everything was happening so fast and now poor Luis is dead." "Where'd everybody else go?" Micki asked.? "Polverizer, Hombre Mono, Rotundo - where are they?" "When Santi left, those thugs of his who weren't tied up or... dead, took off for the jungle.? Since they were still armed and dangerous, those three went after them." "They may need some help," Micki said, as she stood, sniffed the air, and sprinted away.? "I'll catch their scent and follow them." Cat decided to stay and help Tetasina. Several hours had passed and nightfall was approaching.? Survivors from the village, apparently assured that Santi and his men were gone, started to straggle back.? Their stories confirmed the terror and brutality that had been visited upon them by Santi and his cronies.? The children's eyes were still blank with horror, for they had seen their mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers raped, killed or devoured by the demons. "I am glad that she killed them." They were the first words Tetasina had uttered since her near rape. Nightman, Penduloso and Cat stared at her. "They were animals, inhuman," she said.? "They deserved to be torn to pieces, all of them!? I know you think Micki should not have done what she did, that true heroes do not kill.? Well, I wish it was me who did it, I wish I was the one who killed this scum.? Of all of us, Micki is the true hero here." The others looked at one another, but what could they say?? Cat was just sorry it had come to this, because she had so much blood on her own hands and had wished Micki could have been spared that sad experience. "Nightman," she said.? "I'm pretty sure what Micki did was completely against Protector rules.? What's going to happen to her?" "Nothing," Nightman replied, still looking at the fire.? "I'm not putting anything about it in my official report.? If Micki wants to tell Nancy about it when we get back, that's her decision.? Bad enough we've failed again, we don't need something else hanging over our heads." Penduloso and Tetasina both nodded in agreement.? They would not speak of it to their superiors, either.? Nightman looked at Luis Rodriguez' body. "The Medium said one of us would die," he said.? "I guess poor Luis was the one." "No, damn it to hell, he wasn't." It was Micki.? She led three of the runaway mercenaries, blindfolded and heavily bound with jungle vines, back into the camp.? Behind her were more of the returning villagers, and then, last in the procession, were Polverizer and Hombre Mono, carrying a heavy burden on a makeshift reed and vine gurney.? It was Rotundo. "We found five of them menacing these villagers," Polverizer said, through his tears.? "As if they hadn't done enough evil already.? We fell upon them and they gave us a good fight.? Rotundo, he had two of them, one under each arm, and was about to smash their heads together, when a sixth came out of nowhere and stabbed him in the back.? By the time Hombre Mono and I knew what had happened, our dear teammate was dead and the three cowards had fled into the jungle.? Not long after that Micki found us and led us back here." "What about these three murderers?" Penduloso asked angrily.? "We must go and find them at the first light of dawn." "Don't bother," Micki said.? "I've already taken care of them.? They won't be murdering anybody anymore." "Bravo, chiquita," Tetasina said with a big smile, as Nightman's expression turned even more grim. "Cat, you're going to have to talk to her about this," he whispered to the lion woman, while Micki hugged Tetasina.? "She just can't keep killing people, not even these merciless swine.? For Christ's sake, they couldn't help themselves, they were under Santi's control." "Oh really?" Cat asked.? "Santi was long gone when these last bastards tried to harm the villagers.? How much of their actions was Santi's doing and how much originated in their own rotten souls?" At that tense moment, the satellite radio once again crackled to life. "Cat, Nightman, anybody," the Medium pleaded.? "Somebody tell me what's going on and junk!" "Your vision was correct," Nightman answered sadly.? "One of the new Luchadores is dead, along with our guide.? And the bad guys got away with the idol." "Tough shit.? More bad news: Mr. Fix-it has escaped.? Seems he has a new robot who's, like, a lot more versatile than Rover ever was." "Damn!" Nightman said.? "What do we do now?" "We keep trying," Cat said resolutely.? "We don't give up.? We find out where that next idol is and we get it before anybody else, Ted.? That's all we can do." And back in the dark recesses of Cat's psyche, Malato-Zu had to chuckle to herself.
