Chapter 30 - Back To The Real World
"It figures Doc would grow sensimilla instead of ordinary marijuana," said
Mins with a straight face.
"Why's that?" asked Daniece, ever ready for a joke, good or otherwise.
"Because it's a bunch of horny females living without any males around.
They're so horny they even grow male parts to try to get satisfaction.
Just like Doc's Girls!"
Daniece snapped back, "Oh, I thought it was because the only way to have
an all-girl crop is to snip off those male parts!" She made her point by
using her gardening shears to snip a male flower off the plant she
examined.
"Ouch!" He did some of his own snipping as he tried to think of some other
analogy, "How about this: Without any males around, the females go out of
their way to look even more female than usual!"
"That they do, Mins. That they do."
With no male plants or flowers in the field, the female plants created
bigger flowers or buds with more and more of the sticky stuff they used to
catch stray particles of pollen so they could go on to the next stage of
reproduction and create seeds. Unfortunately humans did not want them to
create seeds. Humans liked the large sticky buds loaded with the
tetrahydrocannabinol that would get them high.
All 17 of the original men who entered the mine moved methodically through
the marijuana field, weeding, removing the baby male plants they found,
and snipping off the male flowers.

Haley closed the book she was reading, and took it to her brother Ken's
room. "Ken I have a test on this in half an hour, and I have and so much
left to cover!"
He looked at his kid sister, a lot more tolerant of her and her problems
since his adventure in the world of breasts and bras. "What do you need?"
"Well, you read this last year. Can you just tell me what happened to
those 17 men in Doc's Complex?"
"Okay, where are you?"
"In the pot fields."
"Don't worry about that part. No teacher will test you about pot or what
goes on in the field. Let's see, there was a big costume ball that night,
and everyone got dressed up. Alice got a prize for smallest waist. Pixxie
would have, but she disappeared with her new friend Glycerin that
afternoon and wasn't seen until the end. She only came back long enough to
say that she was Living Together with Glycerin. Oh, and her breasts were
smaller, like DD-cup, I think. Glycerin's too.
"There was what I call the 'travelogue' section of the story after that.
They explored all kinds of places in the Complex, but it turned out in the
end that except for Alice and Keela, they never left Level 8, even though
Keela called it Level 9 when they were at the beach, which the author will
correct when the editing process begins.
"Alice and Keela Lived Together and, oh yeah, the breast thing. All four
of the guys with the hypersensitive boobs lost all interest in their
penises and chose to become women. Alice had his breasts made smaller and
less sensitive after 4 days, but it didn't matter. He became a woman by
spending 90 days in the Complex and did not miss being a male.
"How much time do you have? Five minutes? Okay, the end of the 14 days.
Keela and Alice returned from their time tether thing and they all met in
the living room of the suite. They talked about how great Living Together
was, and there was something weird. Oh, yeah! Alice was now head over
heels in love with Keela, but Keela had burned out on Alice, on the
Complex, and she wanted to go back to the Real World and become Will
again, and that was a problem the author left right to the end.
"As I said, Alice and the other guys with the special boobs stayed women,
Pixxie stayed a woman, and the ones that Doc had made into old, long-term
residents of the Complex wanted to stay. They were Charlettia, Charletta,
and Lilyan. The others Girls wanted to go back. Was there anyone else who
wanted to stay? I remember it was 8 leaving and 8 staying, and Alice not
sure what to do. It was one of the guys with normal breasts."
"Not Berrry," Haley suggested.
"Oh, hell no! After being turned into a living musical instrument, he
began a one-man crusade to get everyone to leave and forget all about the
whole idea! It wasn't Caloryn either. Yeah, I remember: it was Berrry's
brother Mins. He hooked up with three of the Girls and then got unhooked
up with them, but he said his big brother should continue on in the Real
World and he would continue their family traditions in the Complex."
"So what happened to Alice?"
"Oh, man! The whole book could have been about Alice! She was so messed up
by all the Changes and the experiments and her love for Keela, and her
love for Will, and her love for the Complex even with everything that was
messed up about it. Do you know that she even tried to convince Berrry
that his ordeal was a good experience for him? And that was AFTER Lilyan
had used Doc to broadcast a public apology to everyone about what she did
to Berrry. I wonder what happened to her after the book ended?"
"What are you talking about? What did she choose? I have to get to
school!"
"Oh,she chose the Real World, but she wanted to go out to the real world
as a girl, and not just any girl. She wanted to become Keela."
"What?"
"Yeah, can you believe it? She liked Will and she was in love with Keela,
and if Keela went back to being Will, then there would be no more Keela in
the world, and Alice didn't want that, so she asked Doc to set up a
Changing Machine to make her body look like Keela, and to completely erase
Al and Alice from her brain and put all of Keela's thoughts and memories
and skills and personality into her brain. Not Will, though. Just Keela,
and she went on and on specifying and Doc stopped her, and you know what
he said? He said," and Ken made his voice as low as he could (although he
still sounded like a girl) and said, "'I'M NOT THE DEVIL, ALICE. I WON'T
BE LOOKING FOR LOOPHOLES OR WAYS TO TWIST YOUR WORDS. I KNOW WHAT YOU WANT
AND I WILL DO IT'."
"Doc said that? Oh no, I'm late!" Haley stood up and dashed to the door,
but stopped in the doorway. "Oh, I keep meaning to ask: does it describe
what happened to Doc and the Complex?"
Ken shook his head no, "No, that's college stuff. Really complicated,
because Doc is really complicated. In fact it says so right there on the
cover: Doc's Complex!"
He heard her stomping down the hall groaning.

Epilog
It was a sorry group that made it back to the city. They had started out
the weekend with four cars, seventeen people, and a whole lot of mining
equipment, and they were returning with only two cars, nine people, and
eight corpses.
The funerals delayed all of their plans. Weddings, new jobs, moves to
other cities, all were postponed.
Will kept noticing Keela Eisenstein.
They had grown up together, and she had been such a tomboy he had not even
considered asking her out on a date, not even really looked at her. "I
guess I just sort of saw the kid I always knew, but seeing the way she
looks, seeing how she looked at Wren's body, she looked so vulnerable and
yet so sexy!"
He walked over and put his arm around her shoulders. She looked up at him,
her face wet with tears, and then rested her head on his shoulders.
"I can't believe this. Here I am at a funeral for eight of my friends, and
I'm getting an erection just holding Keela's shoulder! When did her mams
get so big? You think I, of all people, would notice that my roommate has
bigger boobs than anyone on my wall! What am I blind? I must have seen her
coming out of the bathroom after a shower or something, but I just don't
recall anything like that."
He followed her back to her seat, and sat in the chair next to hers all
through the rest of the service. They went to the cemetery in Will's car,
and after the eight coffins were laid to rest, Will said, "Keela, I don't
feel right just going home. I'm going to take a walk to clear my head."
"Okay, Will! I can get a ride. I'll see you back at the apartment."
He thought, "What the hell? Her voice sends shivers up my back and down to
my balls! What? Am I deaf, too? How could I not have noticed her voice
before? Oh, God! I've got it bad, and its name is Keela!"
He stopped and looked back at her, "Keela? You want to walk with me?"
"Okay, Will! How about toward that grove of trees?"
So they started walking. The night air was cool, and they kept their hands
in their jacket pockets. Keela talked about each of their friends, keeping
it light, holding onto the good memories. Will tried to match her, but
kept falling behind in the conversation. He recalled that she had always
had an affinity for the things of the world, but not the people. On the
other hand, she was very intelligent. In the time everyone else had gotten
one degree, she had gotten a Bachelor of Science, and three different
engineering masters degrees.
She took apart his pocket watch when they were both ten because he
complained that he had to wind it every day and he kept forgetting. He
remembered the way she did nothing but stare at the tiny gears and things
for a whole week before she started putting it back together. The next day
she came running up to him, her ponytail bouncing back and forth, and she
handed him the watch with a grin.
"I fixed it! You still should wind it every day, but if you don't it will
keep going until you remember."
He did not know what she did to it, but he could wind it as little as once
a week and it would keep perfect time. He took the watch out of his
pocket.
"Remember this?"
"You still have it? Will, we were just kids then! It still works?"
"When you fix things, they stay fixed, Keela. That's one of the things I
like about you."
"Yeah, right. You don't even look at me most of the time." She sounded a
little put off.
"You sound a little put off. Are you saying you WANT me to look at you?"
She gave him a funny look, squinting one eye and looking up at him. "I've
seen your wall. Are you saying you DON'T want to look at me?"
What was she saying? Of course he wanted to look at her.
"I want to do more than look at you, Keela. I don't know what I've been
doing all my life, but I want to do a lot more of the rest of it with
you!"
"Whoa! Steady there, big fella! I like you, too, but we've known each
other for most of 22 years, and we've never even held hands. I admit I've
been hiding in my books and my workshop and concentrating on getting my
engineering degrees, but whether or not you noticed, I AM actually a
girl."
"I noticed," he protested, while thinking, "maybe eight or twelve years
after I should have, but I did notice!"
She smiled, and Will's mouth dropped open. "How could I have gone through
my entire life and not fallen in love with her the minute she smiled like
that?"
"That's a good first step," she said, and started walking again.
He jumped and ran to catch up with her. There was something different
about the way she walked, and then he noticed that she had on high heels,
VERY high heels!
"You have on some very high heels," he said.
"Yes. I got them from my last lover, Alice. You'd have liked her," and she
gestured to indicate enormous boobs. "I mean we're talking basketballs for
boobs! She disappeared, though. Went to a place I couldn't go and I never
saw her again."
"You were with a girl?"
She looked up out of the corner of her eye, "Jealous?"
"Yeah, I mean, no! You can be with whoever you want to be! I'm just hoping
you want to be with me."
She nodded. "That's a good save." They walked a few more steps and he
noticed her hand was not in her pocket, so he slipped his hand in hers.
Somewhere slightly outside space and time, Alice said, "Finally!"

I wrote this novel as part of the 2012 NaNoWriMo challenge to write a
novel of at least 50,000 words between November 1st and 30th, and since
I'm posting them on FictionMania, that makes this an "FMNaNoWriMo novel."
I've more than succeeded, since there are around 126,000 words now.
