Synopsis:
Chapter 28 of the FMNaNoWriMo challenge novel "Doc's Complex," in which
Alice proposes to Doc that he and Keela they Live Together for 90 days,
but be back in time for dinner. Doc has a different proposal. Categories
and key words describe only this chapter.

Chapter 28 - Living Together
Alice lay watching Keela sleep, his own mind too full of questions and
possibilities and all the things he'd learned to even start being drowsy.
When he awoke that morning, he had been trapped in a mine and eight of his
friends had gone missing. "I didn't know how good I had it back then," he
thought.
Since then, he and his friends had discovered a society of women living
secretly in a futuristic underground place called Doc's Complex. Before
they found them, the eight missing members of their expedition had been
Changed, "with a capital C," he thought, into buxom, sexy, intelligent,
beautiful Girls, "with a capital G," and when the rest of the party found
them, the Girls had Changed the men so they LOOKED like those kind of
Girls. He had met Keela, who was both the woman he loved, but also the
woman who had taken over the body and eliminated the identity of his best
friend Will. His own name had been Changed to the girl's name Alice, and
his mind was altered so much that he could not remember anyone calling him
"Albert Eisenstein," although he knew that it had been his name until he
lay on that steel table. He was now a man with boobs as big as volleyballs
and so sensitive that if he did not keep them securely enclosed in the
strongest bra he could find, he would have an orgasm ever six minutes.
Even held tightly from jiggling and swaying, he still had orgasms six
times every hour. He had spent ten hours at a beautiful resort with Keela,
(wearing a bikini so small that he still blushed when he thought about it
-- and about all the men there who desired him,) and they had snapped back
in time to arrive here in this suite of rooms at the same time as the
people who had walked across a park to get here.
"That is one of the things I want to ask Keela about. If we can spend ten
hours and come back ten minutes later, can we spend 90 days and come back
in time to still make the fourteen-day deadline?"
The 90 days was the other thing he wanted to ask Keela about.
"No," he corrected that thought, "I don't want to ask her ABOUT it. I want
to ask her to Live Together with me!"
This society had different rules than his, and the closest thing to the
lifelong commitment his world called marriage was Living Together. For 90
days two people would Live Together every minute, eating, sleeping,
working, playing; everything that one did the other would do with her.
He had asked, "Why only 90 days?" and she had answered with a laugh.
"Hah! Because no one can stay in a relationship that intense for more than
three months!"
He glanced up at the ceiling, still glowing with a dim purplish-pink
light. He held out his arm and still noticed the very slight tingle as it
absorbed energy from that light. There was no place in the entire Complex
where the pinkish-purple rays would not penetrate every cell of his body.
As well as he could understand, those rays gave him energy so he never
would get tired, but with enough exposure, they would also change him into
a woman right down to his genes. And how long could he remain under those
rays before being able to get pregnant while making love? About three
months, and maybe less.
"I don't have as far to go as I might want to believe," he thought, and
glanced down at the watermelons on his chest. "Might as well call them
melons; they weigh about as much!"
"All these time limits," he thought, "Fourteen days to decide whether to
stay here or not, whether to live here as a woman, or go back to my old
life as a man and forget everything about this place. Forget Keela, too."
He looked at her pretty face. "Look at her mouth; she even smiles in her
sleep. How could I ever give that up? But even if I stay, I'd only be with
her for 90 days, and people here can stay young forever. Look at
Charlettia. She looks as young as we do, and she's 60 years old."
He thought about that and then corrected himself. "Damn it, no she isn't!
I'm falling for the whole scheme. That's really Danny, and he's the same
age as I am! And Keela is really my roommate Will. We grew up together,
went to school together, and they've got me thinking the fake life stories
those Changing Machines implanted are the reality, and the Real World is
the illusion. Look at how fake this place is. There aren't even any
shadows!"
It was true. Whether the illumination was normal or lowered as it was now
to help them sleep there were never any shadows. In the dim light now, he
could see the legs under the vanity table as easily as all the makeup on
top of it. Doc's Girls even had to use makeup in a different way than Real
World women. Here they added darker and lighter colors to make their faces
look more three-dimensional.
He got up and paced on the soft, pink carpet. More for something to do
than because he needed to, he went into the bathroom, pulled down his
panties, and sat on the toilet to pee. Like all the other men who now
looked like women, the Changing Machine had substituted new skills and
habits for old ones. He had no reason to think about it, so he did not
realize that among all the other Changes, he had lost all his old
knowledge and habits that had anything to do with standing up to
piss...including the word "piss" from his vocabulary.
"They use teleportation for everything here," he thought as he was about
to flush, so he stood up and looked at the yellow water before he touched
the button behind the toilet. No noise, not even a ripple touched the
surface of the water, but it instantly changed from yellow to crystal
clear.
When Keela had told him on the beach that every part of Doc's Complex was
a figment of Doc's imagination, Alice had laughed and said, "Well that
explains all the teleporting. Stop thinking something is here and think
it's there!"
Keela had denied the very idea that Doc would do such a thing. She was so
adamant that she sounded angry. "Doc would never do that. The Complex is
what is keeping him sane! Everything we do, every invention, everything
has to adhere to the same laws of nature as the Real World. Your body even
digests things using the same chemicals in your stomach. There 's no
difference between anything that happens here and out there."
Alice had gotten her off the subject easily: "Yes there is. I can't spend
an afternoon on the beach with you out there." Silently he had added, "and
I can't fall in love with you out there, either."
"And that's it, isn't it? In spite of knowing who she was yesterday, in
spite of all the time limits, the 14 days, the 90 days, and the other 90
days, I went and fell in love with Keela. I can't wait for her to wake up.
I need to know now!"
He did what he had seen Keela do again and again. He raised his head and
standing in the middle of the bathroom, he looked at the ceiling and
asked, "Doc? Can you stretch time for us the way you did when we went to
the Resort, but for 90 days so Keela and I can Live Together, and bring us
back right before the 14-day experiment is over?"
Then he listened with all his might for an answer.
He didn't have to try so hard. The answer came easily, instantly, inside
his head, in a voice that sounded loud, but wasn't really sounds at all.
"NO. I CANNOT DO THAT."
Alice felt as if his heart was heavier than the massive globes on his
chest.
The voice was not finished. "WHEN I TETHER TIME LIKE THAT, I CAN ONLY
RETURN PEOPLE TO THE INSTANT AFTER THE TETHER WAS FIXED. I CANNOT MOVE THE
ANCHOR OF THE TETHER THIRTEEN DAYS INTO THE FUTURE."
"Wait, so we could Live Together for 90 days starting as soon as Keela
agrees, and then come back to an instant later?"
"YES, BUT YOU MAY NOT WANT TO."
"What do you mean? I love her! Why wouldn't I want to?"
"KEELA WANTS TO GO TO A BALL TOMORROW NIGHT WITH HER FRIENDS. SHE HAS
INVITED YOU. IF YOU LEAVE NOW FOR 90 DAYS, SHE WILL NEED TO WAIT ALMOST
THREE MONTHS TO GO TO THE BALL. YOU CANNOT MEET WITH ANYONE YOU KNOW
DURING THE TIME YOU ARE TETHERED. MAY I MAKE A SUGGESTION?"
Alice began to feel depressed. His idea looked more and more like a bad
one. He said, dejectedly, "Sure. My idea sucks. You got a better one?"
"YOUR IDEA IS FINE, BUT YOU DID NOT CONSIDER ALL THE INFORMATION. I
SUGGEST THAT YOU INDEED ASK HER TO LIVE TOGETHER WHEN SHE WAKES UP, AND IF
SHE AGREES, THEN START LIVING TOGETHER IMMEDIATELY. IN THIRTEEN DAYS, ASK
ME TO TETHER YOU TWO THEN, BUT ONLY FOR THE REMAINING 77 DAYS OF YOUR
COMMITMENT. YOU WILL RETURN IN TIME FOR THE LAST DAY OF THE EXPERIMENT,
AND YOU WILL ACHIEVE YOUR GOAL OF LIVING TOGETHER WITH KEELA."
"Gee! Thanks, Doc!"
There was no answer, and that put him off until he remembered Keela
remarking, that if she did not say thank you, Doc would go on talking
forever.
By saying "Thanks, Doc," Alice had told him to stop talking.

"Yes! Yes, oh, Yes! Of COURSE I'll Live Together with you! I was afraid I
scared you away when I told you about the other 90 days."
"That won't matter if we stay within the 14-day experiment. Doc said he'd
change anyone back if he wanted to return to the Real World."
"Oh, you clever boy! Come here!"
Then there was a lot of hugging and kissing, not to mention an orgasm or
four.

[I can't believe that for most of the characters in Chapter 2 it is now
only a few hours after they entered the Changing Room. I'll never get to
the end of the 14 days in these last two chapters at that rate! Less
detail, more vignettes!]
"We have to work this morning everyone!" Charlettia announced, and since
she wore a fetching pair of overalls and some tan-colored skintight gloves
and workboots made of a similar colored material, they all began talking
about "the farm."
It was the second day, and Alice asked Keela what everyone was talking
about.
"Everyone has to do four hours of work a week. When the eight of us moved
in together, we all decided to do our work ours together. Let's get
changed."
"I thought you said you were an improver?" Alice said it as a question .
"What's that have to do with farming?"
"Not much. I AM an improver. What does that have to do with what I do at
work?"
As it turned out, what Doc's Girls considered "work" was the stuff
everyone considers work. The grunge stuff like weeding, cleaning up messes
that required more brains than the robots had, and other things of the
sort that people usually paid someone else to do so they would not have to
do it themselves. The tasks were spread out over the entire population of
the Complex, and because no one was exempt, the total time per person was
only four hours per week.
"Have you ever worked with sensimilla before, Alice?" He shook his head,
not even knowing what that was. "Okay, then you need to Learn a training
mindtape."
"What's a training mindtape?"
"Okay, then you need to Learn TWO training mindtapes!" The two chairs with
the helmets over them in the living room were occupied, so she took him
back to her room. "You get to try out my new, improved mindtape headset.
Pull up a pillow and relax. I'll set it up."
The mindtapes were contained in cassettes about twice as large as an 8-
track cassette, that people today might recognize as an old video cassette
recorder tape. She inserted them into a tray above a thing that looked
like a stereo receiver on one of her shelves and asked, "What do you want
to Listen to while you're Learning those?" He asked her for her favorite
things to listen to. "No, not listen," she corrected him, "You either
Learn or Listen to a mindtape. Learning goes straight into your memory,
and Listening is like reading fiction or watching a movie. Here, let's
Listen to this remake of 'Miss High Heels.' It takes place in the 19th
century and we're going to a 19th century costume ball tonight, so pay
attention to how people speak and behave in the party scenes."
"Why don't we just Learn that mindtape too, then?"
Keela looked taken aback, "No. I assure you that you don't want to Learn
what's on this tape. Entertainment only, with a splash of 'better him than
me'!"

Afterword for Chapter 28
I'm not looking back when I write new chapters, so if you notice something

I'm writing this novel as part of the 2012 NaNoWriMo challenge to write a
novel of at least 50,000 words between November 1st and 30th, and since
I'm posting them on FictionMania, that makes this an "FMNaNoWriMo novel."
I've already gone over 100K words, and will probably go to around 120K by
the time I'm done. I intend to post a chapter a day during November. (For

with extra characters or new adventures or situations for the existing
characters, go ahead! You also have my permission to write your own
stories using this world as a setting. Please post your versions on

chapters, like "Doc's Complex 27a", and make up a new title. For new
stories, please include the words "Doc's Complex" so fans of that universe
(I know there's at least one -- me!) can find them. Who knows? If enough
people do it, FictionMania may add a new category!
