Albert Eisenstein shouted, "Eureka! I found it!" and his roommate Will
threw a pillow at him.
"Shut up! You just made me miss the score!"
"Sorry. Try one of the local stations. Channel 11 shows the weather
before the sports news, I think."
"Not a bad idea. Maybe you did learn something in college after all."
Will got up and walked over to the TV set to turn the knob. "Living in
the city has all the perks," he said. "Back home we only got the major
networks. So what did you find?" He whacked the side of the set, and
the sound came back on.
"Gold! You know that old mine Buck was talking about? He said there was
no way to get there, but look at this map. See this dotted line? It's a
jeep trail and it goes right past there."
"Yeah? Hold on, here's the sports." They both stared at the screen
while a man announced the scores of recent games."
"Yahoo! Man, grab your jacket! We've got to get down to Callahan's to
celebrate before all the girls are taken!" He took his own advice and
added, "Take that map, too. Let's tell the guys while they're happy and
we can mount an expedition."

An expedition it was! Four cars and nineteen young men with picks,
shovels, and two wheel barrows to haul out all the gold they hoped to
find.
"Just because it wasn't rich enough to keep a whole mining company going
doesn't mean there's no gold at all. My dad used to come out here with
his friends and they'd get enough to make the trip worthwhile." That was
Chuck, Buck's older brother. He was the oldest member of the party,
having graduated two years before the others. Big, muscular, olive-
skinned Italians, the brothers looked like members of a mining family.
At five feet six inches, Albert was a full foot shorter than those two
and easily the smallest man there. He could not even claim to be the
smartest guy. That honor went to Cal Doltry, who had been the star
quarterback and, as valedictorian of their class, had given a rousing
speech the week before at their graduation.
Al looked around at the group Buck had put together and smiled wistfully.
These were the last of the gang from his high school who had made it all
the way through college together, and this weekend was probably the last
time all of them would do something together like this. Five had been
drafted and would probably be in Vietnam by the end of the year. Eight,
including himself, would go on to graduate studies, mostly to maintain
their student deferment. The rest already had jobs. Several were
engaged to be married. With jobs to lose, families, and other
commitments to keep, there was no way they would all again be able to
sneak off like this on a secret trek into the hills to do something as
foolhardy as trespassing onto private property, entering an abandoned
mine, and spending a weekend hacking into the living rock to try to find
gold!
Louie picked the lock on the chain across the dirt road and then locked
it again after the vehicles went past. They used broken branches to hide
the tire tracks as far as could be seen from the main road, and then they
took turns doing the same while following the cars the additional five
miles up the dusty jeep trail. They all had to get out to move a fallen
tree out of the way, they even went so far to make sure no would know
they had been there that they moved the tree back to where it had fallen.
At Al's protest, Buck explained, "See all this empty wilderness around
us? It belongs to some big secret company over the hill from the mine.
I don't know who they are, but they not only have a big fence and barbed
wire all around their buildings, but they bought all the land around
themselves for ten miles in every direction. Does that sound like they'd
be kind to a bunch of guys with digging tools who snuck up close to their
back door? Now I don't know about you, but I don't want to give them
anything to see that could make them suspect that we're here, OK?"
Al gulped. "AOK," he smiled weakly, quoting the astronauts. Thinking
about his one-time ambition to go to space either as an astronaut or
beamed up to the Enterprise, he added, "Let's boldly go where no man has
gone before."
Buck frowned and gave him a queer look. "Yeah, sure," and added, "but
'boldly go' quietly."

They hid two of the cars in an empty shed, and drove the other two into
the wide mouth of the mine itself. After brushing away the tire tracks
and replacing the wooden barricade across the entrance, they set up some
sound baffles Cal had made.
"These are just like the ones at Lincoln Center in New York. I learned
about them when I studied acoustics. We'll be able to bang away as much
as we want down there and no one outside will hear a thing.
They drove down the gentle slope of the main tunnel, and then choosing
the widest tunnel each time there was a fork. The tunnels got narrower
and narrower as they went down, and finally they had to stop. The cars
were right against the right side of the tunnel, and the space on the
left was so narrow they had to carry the wheelbarrows sideways to get
them past the cars. They set up camp in the beams of the headlights, and
began looking for likely places to start hacking away at the walls.
Al got to shout "Eureka!" again when he discovered a thin line of yellow
at the end of a tunnel. It looked like other amateur miners had been
there, and Buck found his father's initials chipped into the wall nearby.
"This must be where he found gold," he exclaimed happily. "Look, Chuck!
He wasn't just telling stories. He really found gold here!"
Everyone stared at him. After a long silence, Mark said slowly, "Do you
mean to say that you got us all to come all the way out here, drive our
cars into the bowels of the Earth, bang our heads, leave our girlfriends,
and, oh, I don't know, maybe get arrested, and you didn't even know if
your dad was telling the truth?"
"Yeah," Moose spoke up, "I've got a long scratch on the side of my Chevy
where it scraped against the walls on the way in here. I'll bet a body
shop will charge thirty or forty bucks to fix that!"
Buck looked properly abashed at their criticism, but was saved from
answering by a loud noise from far up the tunnel.
"That wasn't what I think it was, was it?"
"Uh, Moose? Did your car get scratched from the rock walls, or from
hitting the wooden posts?"
"Oh the post didn't scratch it at all. They were so old they just turned
into a bunch of splinters. No, it was definitely the rock that scratched
my car."
Several guys began running up the tunnel, and then all of them were
pounding their way after them.
The cave-in did not block the entire tunnel. A huge slab of the ceiling
now sat on the floor. There were gaps around the edges as big as six
inches in places. Air flowed around the slab, coming up the tunnel from
somewhere below. They could breathe, but the men were still trapped.
"That slab probably weighs more than all of us plus our cars," Cal said.
"Yeah," grumbled Will sarcastically. "I'm so glad you guys talked me out
of bringing any dynamite. Otherwise we might have caused a cave-in or
something."
"That breeze is coming from someplace," Cal said after thinking for a
while. "I'm going to see if there's another way out of here."
There wasn't. There were ventilation holes drilled into each tunnel from
the surface, but none were big enough even for a child.
Moose backed his car right up to the rock and tried pushing it until his
spinning tires smoked, but it didn't budge even a fraction of an inch.
Then they did the only thing left to try: they all hacked away at the
slab, hoping to chop a path big enough for them to squeeze out. By the
time the last of them collapsed exhausted into his sleeping bag they had
chipped a narrow channel four feet closer to the mouth of the tunnel.
Cal looked up from his slide rule. "Two more days and we'll be out of
here!"
Our cars won't be," moaned Moose.
"Ah, we can always bring back some dynamite," Will assured him. If no
one came after you deafened us all with your car horn for an hour, they
won't hear a few carefully placed bangs."
Weary, depressed, and all hope for finding gold evaporated, the nineteen
men slept like the dead.

When they awoke, eight of them were missing.
A new expedition to explore the tunnels revealed an opening that had not
been there before, a rectangular opening that looked exactly like a
doorway cut into the rock wall. On the other side was a hallway so white
and lit so evenly that they cast no shadows as they explored it.
"This is better than Star Trek," Al said, "It looks like something from
the future!"
The glowing white walls felt like glass and curved where they met the
glowing white floor so it was hard to see where one became the other.
The walls curved into the ceiling, too, but it was easier to discern that
boundary: the ceiling glowed a pinkish-purple color.
"That ceiling makes my skin crawl," Chuck complained. "That weird light
feels hot or electric or something."
"I can feel it, too," said Cal. "I wish I had some of the monitoring
equipment from the lab. This one is closed, too," he added, pressing his
hands on one of the door-sized rectangles regularly spaced along the long
white tunnel.
The first one he had touched had vanished as instantly as a soap bubble
when he had touched it, and beyond it had been an empty room with the
same color scheme as the hallway. It was empty as if newly made. No
furniture, no decorations, just four white glowing walls, and that same,
purplish-pink ceiling.
They walked on for more than an hour, turning when the corridor turned a
corner. The first turn was to the right after sixteen doorways. Then
there was a much shorter section of corridor with two very wide doors
halfway down, and another right turn at the end. That section had
sixteen more doorways, all closed with a material as smooth as the walls,
but the same pinkish-purple color as the ceiling. Then came a left turn
and halfway down the shorter corridor two more huge rectangles.
"I think they're service corridors that run behind those other sections.
If both those big doors opened up, you could drive a truck across this
hallway from there," Chuck pointed to the rectangle on the right and then
to the one on his left, "to there. A big truck. See how high the
ceiling is here?"
They looked up. It was hard to perceive distances with no shadows or
sharp corners, but once he pointed it out, the rest of them did see that
the ceiling here was several feet higher than at the ends of the hallway
by the corners. Not that it was a low ceiling there, either. The
hallway was as wide as a two-lane street and equally high. Walking side
by side, the nine of them easily had enough room to wave their arms.
Actually they sort of stayed together in a clump rather than spreading
out. Besides the odd sensations they felt from the ceiling, they were
intimidated by the strangeness of the place. More than once, Al had the
urge to go back to the slab and continue chipping his way out that way.
The entire area was deserted, and they speculated about it as they walked
and examined everything.
"I hate to mention this, guys," Moose finally said, but all our stuff is
back in the mine, and I haven't had any breakfast or anything." He
shifted uncomfortably and added, "And I sort of have to, uh, well, take a
leak."
"Go ahead," laughed Will. "This place could use another color. That
ceiling is getting to me."
"Well," Moose looked uncharacteristically embarrassed. "That's just it.
I don't want to spoil their nice, clean hallway."
"Can you hold it? Tell you what. Don't move. I'll run down this next
section and try to find another open door. If I get to the end with no
change, I'll come back and we'll all go back to our camp."
Without waiting for a response, he turned and dashed away, slapping his
hands on each doorway, which were on both the left and right walls of the
corridor, as they had been in all but the first section where they had
arrived.
Al stared after him, thinking it odd that Cal had not waited for them to
discuss or agree to his plan.
Moose spoke, echoing his thoughts. "That was rude. He didn't even wait
for us to respond."
A general murmur of agreement followed, and then an awkward silence as
each man found himself wondering why they all suddenly felt that way. It
was not exactly a masculine response. In fact it was more like something
one of their girlfriends would have said.
"Hey guys! This one's open! Come here! You have GOT to see this!"

The room was occupied. It was more than occupied. It was crowded! It
was crowded with tables that each had a dozen or more strange mechanical
arms with tools on their ends like a mad dentist's chair. It was crowded
with weirdly shaped things hanging from the ceiling. It was crowded with
futuristic-looking boxes and panels with buttons and lights on the walls,
on rolling stands all around the room, and more panels at the head of and
on the sides of each table. And It was crowded with the beautiful naked
girls lying on the tables.
Someone said, "Girls!" It didn't matter who. Even the one who said it
probably did not realize he had said it aloud, and they all were thinking
it.
For some reason, the nine young men stopped thinking about anything else
when they saw the eight buxom, nubile young women, and they especially
did not connect the number of women in that room full of strange machines
with the number of men missing from their group.
Considering that the women had, in fact, been those missing men only a
few hours earlier, it was interesting that none of the women thought
about it either.
