It had been a day like any other. The four of us, Liz, my wife, Adam,
her brother, and Christine, Adam's girlfriend, as well as myself, Nick,
were piled in Liz's car. We were going to visit her Grandma, who lived a
few hours away, so it made sense to take one car. It was Liz's car, so
she drove, like always. It was a trip we'd made exactly like this,
several times a year, for the past 5 years or so. That's why the events
of that day came as such a surprise.
There was a new song on the radio. Something about war, or ghosts, or
something. I'd heard it a dozen times but had never paid any attention
to it. Apparently it was pretty popular among us, because the radio got
turned up.
Anyway, we were driving down the expressway, we hadn't even made it out
of town. The radio was cranked up, it was a normal trip. It was normal
in every way until I saw a flash of light, a crunch of glass, and
everything went black.
I awoke either 5 seconds or 100 years later, I couldn't tell the
difference. My entire body felt like it was being stung by bees that
were made out of lava. If there is a sensation any more pure and
concentrated as the pain I felt at that moment, I cannot describe it. I
tried moving, and though I could flail about, the pain was too much. I
tried to look around, but could barely move my head. I managed to see
what looked like a semi truck out of the corner of my eye. I closed my
stinging eyes, as consciousness left me again.

I awoke the next time, another thousand years later, in an ambulance. I
don't think I even opened my eyes, because I don't remember seeing
anything. I heard plenty of voices, bits and pieces of words and
sentences. "Hemorrhaging", that one was my favorite. I knew I was a
mess, my entire body felt like it was exposed. If you've never had your
flesh flayed and torn at, I don't recommend the experience. The slight
movement of air over my body was enough to make me want to cringe, but
movement was even more painful.
I drifted in and out of consciousness in the ambulance and ER. Someone
from the car was brain dead, I selfishly prayed it wasn't Liz. I heard
them saying something about a "tissue match" and an "ideal candidate",
but I wasn't able to speak to ask what was going on. Before I heard
anything else, I was sedated, and fell into a painless sleep.
That is, until they cut my head off. That woke me up, and was certainly
not painless. For an instant, I felt massive stinging pain, then
nothing. For 8 seconds, I had full consciousness and could feel myself
being moved, carried in someone's arms.. Nothing in this world could
prepare me for that, and no words can describe the experience.
In that few seconds, I had no sensations, other than the feeling of my
head being moved, and I had more time to think than I would've thought.
I literally had no idea why they would've cut my head off, what they were
doing to me, or anything of the sort. None of it made sense.
I drifted off into what I assumed was a comforting death. I'd had a good
run, all 30 years of it I wouldn't trade for anything. I had loved, been
loved, laughed, traveled, and seen many of the joys of life. Death was
far from ideal, but I would leave no regrets, no sadness behind. Being a
head was interesting, but I was quite ready for the nothingness that
occurred after a few seconds.
So you can imagine my surprise when I regained consciousness.

Opening my eyes was a strange experience. Like my eyelids didn't quite
understand the instructions I was sending them. The sounds I heard were
muddled, and high pitched, like everyone was breathing helium. Once I
finally got my eyes open, the colors were strange, and bright.
Everything had a strange hue to it, sort of greenish-blue.
Gathered around me was everyone I think I'd ever met, and then some. Liz
was alive, standing right next to me, followed by my sisters, Vicki and
Cindy, my father, his wife, my aunts who were still alive, my cousins,
and my best friends, Bryan, Brittney, and Jason. Then Liz's family, Adam
had survived, their parents, grandparents, aunt, uncle, and her cousin.
Their family had been amazing to me ever since I'd met Liz, and I loved
them dearly. Christine's family was at my right, her Mother, Sister, and
two men I didn't recognize, perhaps her father and stepfather. I didn't
see Christine there, which saddened me. Process of elimination meant
that she'd been the one who hadn't made it. She was a glorious woman,
beautiful, witty, Adam had been lucky to have her. I didn't know why her
family was there, and I guess my confused look upset her mother, because
she started crying, and the whole family had to leave the room.
I tried to speak, but it came out extremely raspy, "Well, that was
awkward. What's everyone doin' here, anyway? Is it someone's birthday?"
I was horrible at making jokes, but I got a chuckle out of Vicki.
Everyone grinned a little bit, and they started trying to talk to me, but
the muffled squeaky voices made it hard for me to focus. I closed my
eyes and tried to fall asleep, but rest would not come. Eventually,
people started shuffling out of the room.
Moving was difficult, since, I quickly discovered, I was restrained, and
my head was immobilized, so I couldn't even look around. Everything
felt...different.
A doctor came in, mentioned that I was going to need some extensive
rehabilitation, and that the vision and hearing problems were to be
expected after my procedure.
Every couple of hours someone would come in, say a few words to me about
how lucky I was, and leave. Nurses kept changing my IV, and looking at
the monitors, which were conveniently out of my sight. I think it was
another day or two, I slept for most of it, before my hearing and vision
suddenly corrected themselves. I could see and hear normally, but it
still was uncomfortable to talk very much. My fingers could reach the
call button, which I'd neglected until then, but I'd been told to call if
I noticed any changes in my vision or hearing, which I certainly had.
Exactly an hour later, or so it seemed, a short black nurse came in.
"How's everything going, darlin'?" she asked, a slight southern accent in
her voice.
"Doctor...or somebody...told me to call if my vision or hearing changed.
It's been messed up since I woke up, but it seems pretty normal now." It
felt like it took ages to get those sentences out, but the nurse was very
kind and patient.
I saw her smile "Well, that's the best news I've had today, I'll let the
doctor know."
As she turned to leave, I said, "Wait. Is my wife here? I want to see
her."
That's when she gave me a look I wasn't expecting. Confusion, disdain,
or a combination of the two. "I'll see who's here".
Another thousand years passed before I heard from anyone else. A
different nurse came in, and wordlessly marked some notes in my chart,
hung a new IV bag, and left. Finally a doctor came in, he was a younger
man, well, younger than most of the doctors I'd seen before. Maybe in
his 30's, not an old man like every other doctor I'd ever been to.
"Well hello, seems you're finally ready to rejoin the land of the living,
eh?" He was in a good mood. That was good. "I'm Doctor Ethan Johns,
head of neurosurgery."
"I'm Nick, head of being strapped in a hospital bed" He chuckled at that
one. At least he was friendly.
"So I'm sure you're wondering what all's happened to you. As you know,
you were in an accident. The driver and one of the other passengers had
minor injuries, but you sustained the worst."
"Not quite. I'm pretty sure one of them died, and well, I'm still here."
"Yes well, that's where all of this comes in." He tapped the halo keeping
my head in place before continuing, "Yes, the other passenger was struck
rather hard in the head, and suffered irreparable damage to her brain.
You were the opposite, every organ in your body was damaged, not a single
unbroken bone below your shoulders." That made sense. Moving had been an
exercise in futility and an experiment in the true meaning of pain.
"Your brain and skull, however, were intact and undamaged. We were able
to save your life, in a way" In a way, that was unsettling.
"Here's where things get difficult to explain. Christine was an organ
and tissue donor, and you two were a near-perfect tissue match. It took
an extremely long surgery, but honestly, you were the ideal candidate for
this procedure, and a world first. Once you're healed and recovered,
you're going to be famous."
I interrupted the Doctor here, "Wait wait, what kind of procedure?
What'd you do? Why am I going to be famous?" My voice was less raspy,
but felt, and sounded different to me.
"Well, there's not an easy way to explain it."
"Then blurt it out"
"Very well, we performed the world's first successful human brain
transplant. As the other doctor said, you're in for a lot of
rehabilitation and recovery. Your brain now resides in the body of your
friend, Christine."
I think it was fitting, if not intentional, that his timing coincided
with a dose of medicine that made shock completely impossible. A non-
consensual slumber took hold, and I drifted off.
