Chapter Two
Althea Smallwood found herself drifting off as the lawyer representing
the group of fairies would not stop lecturing her about his clients "God
given rights". She wanted to close her eyes and put her head down. She
even considered taking a recess but wanted to end this case now. She
tried what the other justices had suggested. She had pinched herself,
she had tried chewing gum, she had pushed her fingernails into the palm

"Your honor, my clients are here because their God-given rights are
being violated on a daily basis. They have lived in these woods since
the beginning of time and the dwarfs insist on decimating their home for
profit."
Althea Smallwood interrupted. She was trying to take in gulps of air
hoping she wouldn't yawn. "Counselor, please define 'since the beginning
of time' or tell me about their 'God-given rights,' please.
The lawyer hesitated. "Uh, well, I don't know how you'd describe the
beginning of time. Well, since this planet began?"
Althea Smallwood smiled. "Counselor, instead of oration, please get to
the point. If you can't phrase your case simply, I will dismiss the case
and the charges you have brought against the defendants will be
dropped."
The lawyer looked shocked then befuddled. He was trying to impress the
fairies so he could charge them more. Now, he was in danger of
alienating the judge and losing everything. He tried to do his best to
satisfy Judge Smallwood. "Well, Judge. The fairies live in the forest
that is now being chopped down by the dwarfs. They sell the lumber. It's
not necessary that they destroy these fairies' homes just to make
money."
Althea looked at the defendant's lawyer. "And what do you have to say in
your client's defense?"
The lawyer stood. "Your honor, the dwarfs have been cutting down trees
in this forest since NeverWorld began. It's how they make a living. The
fairies want to restrict the dwarfs' opportunities by declaring the
whole forest off limits."
Judge Smallwood spoke. "Would both counsels approach the bench?"
After both counsels were in front of her, she spoke quietly. "We need a
compromise, gentlemen. Let me hear your best offers."
The defendant's lawyer was direct and to the point. "The dwarfs will not
strip the forest but selectively cut one-third of the trees. They will
plant two new trees for each one they harvest."
The plaintiff's lawyer was less pompous standing at the bench. "The
fairies will allow the dwarfs to cut one-quarter of the forest from the
edges, going into the forest no further than a quarter mile. The center
of the forest remains untouched."
Althea Smallwood banged her gavel. "Good. You may return to sit with
your clients and I will rule."
Judge Smallwood waiting until the lawyers were seated. "I have heard
both sides of this case and each of the lawyers representing the fairies
and the dwarfs and learned that compromise is the best solution. I will
rule. The dwarfs will be allowed to cut down one-quarter of the mature
trees to harvest and they must stay within a half a mile from the
outskirts of the forest. They must plant three trees for every one they
cut down.
"Both the fairies and the dwarfs will meet together each month to
determine if they are abiding by my order. It there is a violation, we
will convene again in this court."
Althea banged down her gavel. "The court will take a recess."
Althea was exhausted. She'd been working for almost three hours and the
last case had made her head hurt. She signaled the bailiff that she was
done and to call another judge to come in to take her place. Court Seven
ran twenty-four-hours-a-day in NeverWorld. There were always problems to
be solved. The bailiff told her earlier that cases were being scheduled
three months in from now.
She had heard rumors that the NW staff was creating a tenth court to
handle to overage. She smiled as she walked into her chambers and
immediately dropped her robe into the hamper to be cleaned. She stood
there in her heels, panties, and bra. She was very tired. Aletha went
over to her dressing table.
She sat down and looked in the mirror. She stared at herself as
everything turned white.
Randy found himself back in his chair staring at his console. Having
exited NeverWorld, he was still feeling the headache he'd felt on the
bench. He slowly felt himself coming back to reality. He reached for the
pitcher of water and a glass and carefully poured. Both his hands were
shaking and he had to put the glass down on the console table. He used
two hands to steady the pitcher.
He drank deeply. Three hours of NeverWorld was exhausting and now he
needed to get the train home. He closed down his equipment and left his
cubicle.
As he stood, he could see the other cubicles and observe a large number
of people that were still working. He would have loved to be full-time.
Then he could explore the city and spend some social time in NeverWorld
again. All his past visits had been to work. But he wanted to graduate
with a degree more than work in NeverWorld for the rest of his life.
As he walked to the door, he still wondered what had happened that first
day when Althea had brought them both to climax. He knew he didn't

Randy didn't know there was a lounge. He was only there for two hours a
day and really hadn't met any of the other employees since he had
started working. He followed Mrs. Jones through an unlocked door to a
nice clean cafeteria with vending machines and comfy chairs. They both
opted for bottled water and sat down. Randy noted that everything was
free.
Mrs. Jones smiled as she opened her water. "So, Randy, how are you
doing? Are you enjoying your job here? You've been here now for a month,
right?"
Randy nodded as he drank deeply. One side effect of NeverWorld was you
got thirsty. He smiled back and nodded. "Right. I'm doing great. I'm
having a good time working in the court. The job is hard and
challenging, but I'm fine. But, well, I have a question about something
that happened on my first day." Randy hesitated.
Mrs. Jones smiled. "Was there a problem?"
Randy was having trouble talking about this. Nothing had happened since
that first day, but it was still disturbing. He also guessed that
everything was being recorded and if he didn't bring it up, they would
know anyway.
"Well, yes. I really don't know how to say this, but, well. On my first
day, Judge Smallwood acted independently of me while I was getting ready
to leave. She was thinking about her date that night and masturbated

Mrs. Jones sat quietly for a minute. Randy realized that she was
listening through her earpiece. Then, she looked directly at him and

to four hours a day when you have the time. Just in case you're thinking
about moving closer to campus and NeverWorld. We can also use you on the
weekends, too."
"I might be able to do double shifts on some days. My classes aren't
that challenging. I have the time."
"That's good. We can use the help. We're understaffed right now."
Randy thanked her and left. He got out just in time to get to the
platform and catch the train. He knew the maglev ran every thirty
minutes so he felt relief to catch this SEPTA train. He closed his eyes
and tried to relax as he rode the thirty minutes home. It was the dinner
hour and the car was crowded.
The next day, Randy made a point to be early for his meeting with Gail
for the weekly math session. Sometimes, she was late and he wanted to
set a good example. They talked for the first couple of minutes before
they got down to work. After they had spent thirty minutes on math, Gail
was packing up. She turned to Randy and looked at him. She put her hand
on his. "Randy, can I buy you lunch to thank you for all the help you've
provided me?"
Randy shivered from her touch and smiled. "Sure. That would be great."
He thought it would also be great to spend more time with her. He knew
he had a big crush on her.
"Great. I've invited two of my girlfriends to join us. We're just going
to eat here if you don't mind."
Randy looked up and saw two more beautiful women heading his way. When
the three women were together, Gail introduced her two friends, Stacy,
and Lara. Randy smiled and jokingly wondered if these women were
manufactured somewhere. They were all so beautiful and perfect looking.
He figured that all the beautiful women gravitated to marketing and
design.
Lunch was a blur. Randy sat there quietly while the women talked to each
other and politely included Randy in their conversation. They were
talking about classes and looking forward to their internships out in
the business world.
Somewhere along in the conversation, Gail mentioned that Randy worked
part-time for the NeverWorld Company.
Lara turned to him. "Oh, really? My boyfriend is totally into
NeverWorld. He plays every day. He keeps asking me to join him there."
Lara was animated when she said that.
Randy smiled and nodded. He didn't say anything.
Gail and Stacy both got into a discussion of why their boyfriends would
want them to go there.
Stacy laughed. "I heard it's all about getting crazy and having wild sex
when you're online. The guys are all about that because they said you
can't get in trouble."
Gail turned to Randy. "Is that true?"
Randy knew that it was illegal to have premarital sex or do drugs. Some
people were saying that the United States had become more conservative
in the past twenty years. They said it was starting to become a very
puritanical country with old world values.
He'd heard about students being arrested and fined for having college
parties. He'd even heard the story that one drunken college student had
been found having sex with his girlfriend. They had both been arrested
and their parents had been arrested later because both of the students
were under twenty-one. The story was that the both families had been
fined, lost their house, and jobs.
Randy wondered if it was an urban legend or whether it was true.
"What do you think, Randy?"
He smiled. "About what?"
"Do people party in NeverWorld? Do they get drunk and have sex?"
Randy nodded seriously. "They do. The rules of NeverWorld are different.
It's not the same as here."
Stacy looked at him oddly. "Well, how do you know about that kind of
stuff? What makes you an expert?"
Randy smiled. "Oh, I'm not an expert, but I work there. My part-time job
in NeverWorld is working in the magistrate system. A lot of the out-of-
control people end up in court. That happens everyday. But most people
keep it under control and don't get reckless and destroy property or
hurt anyone else."
Stacy was listening. "What do you do?"
"Uh, I'm a judge in Court Seven."
Gail looked at him funny. "No, you can't be a judge. Aren't all the
judges women in NeverWorld?"
Randy blushed deeply and nodded. "Yes, that's true. In NeverWorld, my
avatar is female."
They all looked at him and laughed. "What's that like?"
Randy blushed. "Well, I really don't know anything about being a woman.
All I do is sit on the bench and rule on disputes. It's not like I do
anything but walk into the courtroom then walk out. I'm not pretending
to be a woman interacting with other people."
Lara looked at curiously. "Has your avatar ever been invited out on a
date?"
Randy was uncomfortable but was determined to answer truthfully. "Well,
yes. She has had offers from some of the lawyers we've met. But, we just
thank them and say no."
"Would you go out on a date as your female avatar?"
Randy laughed. "I've never gone out on a date as me. I mean, I've never
dated or had a girlfriend." It was not unusual in Randy's world for kids
to just be friends until marriage. There was more and more talk about
parents arranging marriages in the future.
The girls looked at him strangely as if he had two heads. Gail smiled.
"Well, okay. But, would you like to go out on a date? If I were to fix
you up, would you go out with a girl or do you want to date a boy?"
"No, girls are fine with me. Just cause my avatar is a woman doesn't
mean I'm that way. But, well, sure. I'd like to go out with a nice girl.
But, I have no experience with any of that stuff."
They all decided he was cute and their new mission was to find him a
girlfriend. He just shook his head, but secretly was excited.
"Stacy smiled strangely at him. "Which do you like better, being a woman
or a man?"
Randy shrugged. "I don't really know about the woman part because all I
do is play a female judge in court. I sit, listen to lawyers, and pass
rulings. I've never really interacted with another person in my avatar."
Stacy smiled. "Tell us about the parties."
Randy thought for a minute. "It's not like here. The laws are different.
The model for NeverWorld is 1970. People party a lot, all the time. Some
people just come to NeverWorld to get high and listen to music. Some
people come to have dates and stay overnight. They get hotel rooms and
sleep together. \ Some couples live together without getting married.
There are people called swingers who just get together for sex, not love
or a relationship."
All three of the girls were shocked. They could stop chattering about
the differences.
"You're kidding! Seriously! So that's why Richie wants me to go there
with him. Oh, wow. But, won't I be arrested when I return here?"
Randy smiled. "You don't really go there. You stay here in front of a
console, but everything seems real. Smells, touch, sound, and love all
seem very real there."
Gail still wondered about it. "So if you have sex there would you still
be a virgin here? I have to be a virgin on my wedding night. My parents
would disown me!"
Randy smiled. "When I say I've never had a girlfriend, well, here, it's
no big deal. In NeverWorld, everyone loses their virginity. It's really
different. Lots of bars, music, parties in the streets. Someone said
that the main city is based on Old New Orleans."
Lara hooked her arm in his. Randy felt a rush of heat move through his
body. "We're still going to get you a girlfriend. And you can take her
to NeverWorld on your first date."
Randy laughed. "I have two characters in NeverWorld. One is a woman
judge and the other is a four-foot-tall dwarf. Which one do you think
she wants to be?"
Everyone laughed.
Stacy smiled. "So tell us more about NeverWorld, Randy. I want to hear
about the parties."
Lara shook her head. "Big mistake, Stacy. I mean, once you've lived in
that fantasy world, you're going to get hooked and spend all your free
time there."
Gail nodded. "It's pretty popular. They say the subscriptions are
increasing. I read where they had to open another island as big as Old
Manhattan to accommodate all the new people."
Randy agreed. "Yeah, I guess 2034 isn't as much fun as 1970, huh? And
you know NeverWorld has islands with dwarfs, fairies, trolls, giants,
witches, elves, and dragons. There's something for everyone."
Stacy was looking on her phone. She showed them the ad about
subscriptions to NeverWorld. "Hey, I want to take the tour and see it
all. It really sounds like the place you would take a vacation."
After Stacy and Lara left, Gail looked at him funny. "Hey, I have a
question. You said your avatar is a judge, right?"
Randy nodded. "Right."
"How are you smart enough to be a judge and know everything there is
about the law?"
Randy smiled. "NeverWorld offered me a training course, high tech, and
everything. In two weeks, I had a law degree and passed the bar."
"Where'd you pass the bar, Randy? Was their bar exam the same as here?"
Randy thought about that. "I don't know. It didn't seem important at the
time. But, you're right, I should know."
Gail looked at him with newfound respect."If you were smart enough to
pass the bar in two weeks of study, just think what you could become if
you wanted! It must be great to be so bright and learn everything
without attending classes.Well, speaking of that, I've got class now.
This has been great, very enlightening, Randy."
Randy nodded. "Well, it was great to meet your friends and thanks for
lunch!"
Randy didn't have any classes after their lunch, so he wandered over to
NW and asked for Mrs. Jones. He sat in the entrance waiting, sitting on
a comfy chair.
Mrs. Jones appeared, smiling. "Well, hi Randy. What a surprise!"
"Hi, Mrs. Jones, I don't have class this afternoon and came by to work.
But, I have a question about all that law classes I took here. I don't
have a record of my schooling from NeverLand. Could you access that and
send me a copy?"
"Of course, Randy. What do you want it for?"
"Well, I was thinking of signing up to take the LSAT and the MCAT to see
how smart I've gotten since I started here."
"Well, if you're trying to see how smart you are, you might as well make
it more meaningful for you. You can test out of a lot of your classes
you're taking in school right now. You are very bright and Philadelphia
College allows those tests to count towards graduation. That means you
can take classes here in NeverWorld and finish up in no time."
"You mean with the hypnosis and accelerated classes?"
"That's right. If you have the capacity, you can accomplish an awful
lot. You have the mind for it.
"NeverWorld is thinking of partnering up with the college sometime in
the future. We'd could teach some of the really bright kids like you and
we'd be able to recruit more successfully using more of those college
students to work here."
Randy spent the afternoon at his console. He was working two shifts as
Althea. He made twice the money that day. He thought about the
conversation he had at lunch and whether he wanted to stay in college or
drop out. He knew he'd think about it for a couple of days.
The next day, he went over early again and buzzed for Mrs. Jones.
"Hi, Randy! Taking more shifts again? That's great. We can really use
your help. The courts are backed up now."
Randy nodded. "I heard that from the bailiff in court the other day."
Randy walked over to his console, sat down, and made himself
comfortable. He slipped on his headset and gloves, punched in his
activation code and waited. As the white light consumed his vision and
his mind, he relaxed and waited for the transition.
As she looked at herself in the mirror, Althea reapplied her lipstick.
She smiled. As she went to stand up she suddenly was overcome with
vertigo and sat back down hard in her chair. She gripped her dressing
table as the room seemed to spin violently.
It all passed in a minute. She sat there wondering what had just
happened.
As she sat there, her right hand moved into her lap and then between her
legs. Slowly, she started to caress herself until she found a rhythm.
She used her left hand to cup her generous breast and rub her nipple in
a circular motion. Soon, she had her eyes closed and was lost in her own

About ten minutes later, she slowly opened her eyes and waiting until

The controller saw the red light on his panel. He dialed it in and read
the lines of code. He thought this over then hit the transmit button.
"Boss."
"Yeah."

"You think it's the AI?"
"Same footprint as last month with the sex thing. Remember, the AI

helmet to meet with us, too. Remember, they were testing out the new
chip in these headsets?"
"You think the AI got access through the chip?"
"It was designed to help keep the kid in character."
An hour later, the boss, the controller, and the tech sat in the control
room watching the monitor. They rewound the video and synchronized the
readouts.
The tech was studying the printouts. "I don't see anything more than
that first power surge and the vertigo reaction. Then she started. Yeah,
I think the AI had access into him through her, but it looks like the
probe left after the orgasm. The AI is not there now while the kid is
working in on the bench."
The boss turned to the controller. "We need to set some sort of an alarm
if the AI comes back. We need to keep close tabs until we figure out
what to do."
The controller nodded. He was used to taking orders. "But we never
wanted the AI to have full access to any character. That's really bad to
have it running loose. We can't have it inside the characters, imagine
what could happen."
"The big question is what do we do now?"
"How many helmets have the new chips?"
The tech checked his tablet. "A lot, maybe a thousand since production
started last month. I think the kid had the prototype. Every new helmet
we're making has that chip now."
The controller shook his head and turned to the tech. "Stop the
production and fall back to the old chip. Then, we have to recall those
thousand and provide them with a new helmet and give them a couple free
months of subscription when they return it."
The boss nodded to the controller. "Good idea, actually it's great
idea." He turned to the tech. "How long before we can stop production
and replace the chip?"
The tech thought for a minute. "I stopped production while we were
watching the tape. I sent an message out to all the retailers and the
wholesalers to stop selling that model. We still might have some older
models in our warehouses. We could get those on the shelves in twenty-
four hours.
"We can have the process started today. We'll have to pull the chips,
retrofit them, and have them back on the shelf as new helmets in a week.
We can have the old chip in stock tomorrow and have them on the line in
two days. We'll lose two days of sales."
The boss stared up at the ceiling. "This is bad. This is very bad."
