Jessie came out of the church on that Sunday morning and stopped to talk
to some guys he knew.

Jessie got to his 1979 Ford F250 and climbed in and started it up. Even
though this was the south it was still 4 wheel drive because he
occasionally needed it. When Jessie pulled up it was already 12:45 and
he decided to check around the house and saw it looked good and came
out.
While he was looking at the garden Mandy pulled up and he saw her.
She said, "Hi handsome I know it is a few minutes early but I couldn't
wait."
Jessie smiled and said, "Well, I almost didn't make it here with Joe at
church trying to talk my ear off."
They hugged and kissed each other lightly again and Mandy had her arm
around Jessie's waist and Jessie followed suit.
Mandy asked, "So what should we eat?"
Jessie said, "Well, I didn't plan lunch how about we go to the caf? in
town."
Mandy said, "That sounds great."
Jessie walked Mandy to his pickup and helped her in the driver's side
door and after she slid over Jessie got in.
Jessie said, "You might want to watch your legs I do have to shift."
Mandy moved them to the side and he shifted it to the reverse and than
turned the truck around.
After going on the road Mandy said, "You have a unique look shoulder
length hair and a full beard and you are a country boy."
Jessie laughed and said, "That look came from Lynrd Skynrd and after
awhile everybody knew me by this and I decided on it because Lynrd
Skynrd was my favorite band. Unique isn't the word my parents would say
in fact dad used to say hippie."
Mandy laughed and said, "Well I love your accent."
Jessie laughed and said, "I hate to break it to you but this accent is
pretty normal here ."
They got to the diner and as they were walking to an empty table Jessie
saw his uncle and aunt. He went over and shook his uncle's hand and
hugged his aunt.
His uncle said, "What is the name of this pretty girl you have here?"
He said, "Uncle Jack this is Mandy and Aunt Ruth this is Mandy."
They all said hello.
Aunt Ruth asked, "So how did you two meet?"
Mandy related the story about that night and they all laughed.
Aunt Ruth said, "I almost had to break into Uncle Jack's room to get him
to pay me any mind. So Mandy don't be embarrassed us women we can't be
timid these boys just don't know what's good for them."
They all laughed and Jessie didn't know about that side of his aunt but
he wasn't real surprised.
His uncle said, "Why don't you sit with us there is plenty of chairs."
His aunt corrected his uncle by saying there are plenty of chairs and
the three laughed and his uncle just blushed.
His aunt explained, "I taught high school English and Jessie took my
class but sometimes I don't think it did any good because the grammar
he uses sometimes is that of a backwoods hick. Now, I know he was
raised on the farm but that doesn't mean he has to talk like some
uneducated redneck."
Now it was time for Jessie to blush with the statement his aunt made.
Aunt Ruth's and Uncle Jack's order came and they still talked after
Jessie and Mandy gave their order.
Uncle Jack said, "His father and I were raised in the house that Jessie
has now. We just divided the land and I built my house which is nice
but not nearly the house that Jessie has. But we both have the best
acreages in the county and that I can promise you."
Aunt Ruth said, "Those 2 boys were hellions John's wife and I had our
hands full."
Uncle Jack said, "These 2 women were better class ladies than we ever
deserved that I can tell you. I think it took me 2 years of marriage to
get smart enough to build a boot box. When I finally did build one I
trumped in with muddy boots and she turned towards me with that meat
cleaver and you know what I built that box the next day."
Ruth said, "Jack didn't know was I was cutting up that chicken but
coming in with those muddy boots he didn't need to know that."
Jack retorted, "Women are smarter than us."
Mandy said, "We have to be or you men would still have us live in
caves."
Aunt Ruth says, "Amen sister."
Jack said, "You might as well get used to it they unite and there are
more of them than us."
Mandy whispered, "This is why we pick men like you we know you men need
to be straightened out."
He blushed and the table laughed and Jack said, "I can only imagine what
she told you but my advice to you is fly right. It took me 45 years of
her cracking the whip to get that figured out."
As they finished eating Jack leaned towards me and whispered, "Boy she
got you like Ruth had me 47 years ago just I didn't know it than."
They got up and went and paid for their meal.
Mandy asked, "What did your Uncle tell you?"
He laughed and said, "He said boy she got you like Ruth had me 47 years
ago just I didn't know it yet."
She smiled and said, "Us girls know how to set the hook."
They got their meal and they enjoyed their small talk and Jessie was
feeling happier than he felt in years.
When they went to the cash register and Jessie grabbed the toothpick and
bit down on it the lady said, "Did you enjoy your lunch with us?"
Mandy said, "I love diners and cafes."
The lady said, "I am glad you enjoyed it and what did you do to catch

Mandy said, "Meet him at his place at 8:00 at night after he hauled

So they walked out to the pickup and Mandy wrapped her arms around his
waist and said, "If this is how you are I believe I will love spending
time with you."
He laughed and said, "If you love this you are easy I brought us here
because I thought it would take too long to fix lunch."
She said, "I got tired of the city life and the gangs trying to take
over. My family came through Beaufort over 20 years ago on the way to
Hilton Head at least that is why dad claimed we stopped here. Now I got
tired of living in Chicago and well 4 years ago I stayed in that Bed and
Breakfast In town. Last year I finally got up the courage to quit my
job in Chicago and move here. It is on County Road 5 and it is just a
couple of acres but I love it. I have rabbits. chickens and a dog and I
also tend to a small garden. I was happy but than when I saw you I
remembered how lonely I am."
Jessie replied, "Well, I can understand and you getting the courage up
to take up roots to leave you know can be intimidating. This town is
like a lot of small towns it is tough for some people to warm up to new
people who moves here. We depend on each other unlike Chicago. Take me
and my neighbors. The same neighbors I delivered feed to will help me
to change out the flat bed to the dump box for the soybeans when it is
time to harvest. By the way we will help each other to harvest our
crops where we can."
They pulled up to the house and they saw a 1991 Buick Roadmaster and
Jessie started laughing.
He said, "Well, we can't keep you and I secret for long. That is mom
and dad."
After they pulled in and got out of the truck his mom and dad walked
over to the pickup.
His mom cried and laughed and said, "Dear let's go in the house and so
the men can talk."
His dad said, "So how is that old 48 COE running? I hear you changed
engines in it."
Jessie said, "Yes, dad the cylinders already had 3 sleeves in it and the
motor was getting close to needing a new block. I was able to get the
Powerstroke and 6 speed transmission from a wrecked 2 1/2 ton Ford."
His dad said, "I wondered about that and did you get a good deal on the
motor and transmission?"
Jessie said, "Oh yeah 7500 for them both."
His dad said, "Well you did get a good deal. About that girl."
Jessie related the story about Friday night and his dad started
laughing.
Jessie said, "I am glad you find this funny."
His dad said, "I do and you know that girl has you."
He said, "Uncle Jack has already told me."
Before they spoke again his mom yelled," It is time for you boys to come
to dinner."
It was already after 5 and they went inside and washed up in the kitchen
sink.
As they were sitting down his mom Margret said, "This Mandy is quiet a
cook and she told me that she is living in Paul Richardson's house."
Dad started laughing and said, "That was quiet a mess."
Mandy said, "It was in good shape structurally but it was overgrown in
weeds and I kept finding whiskey bottles in every cabinet and cubby hole
in that house."
Dad said, "I bet after he died we did a lot of repairs In that house. We
repaired that porch and replaced the windows and what not. We had
already taken away a ton of whiskey bottles. We had also had to scrub
up blood in the bedroom because he died of cirrhosis of the liver. He
was the town's drunk."
Margret said, "Can't you wait until after supper before talking about
his liver disease. He wasn't born in the barn even though he acts like
it at times Mandy."
They finished up dinner and dad and he went to the livingroom because
they knew it was smart to do so.
Dad said, "That Mandy is a heck of a catch she can cook and what she did
with that old drunk's house is amazing you really should go over there.
Margret and I just saw the outside of it."
Jessie just shook his head that Roadmaster was his dad's and mom's
retirement car and they took a lot of long drives in the county and all
over the state since they retired.
Margret and Mandy came out of the kitchen and Margret said, "Now, my son
is a good man but he has stayed a bachelor too long. He is 30 years old
and has never been married so you will just have to be patient with him.
It is time for Fred and I to go home."
After Fred and Margret left they went out to the porch and sat in the
porch swing and slowly rocked back and forth in the swing.
Jessie said, "I am sorry for mom and dad on our first date I know they
can be intrusive."
Mandy said, "I really enjoyed it and loved getting to know them
especially your mom."
Jessie said, "Mom is amazing she held the family together."
Mandy said, "Really?"
He said, "Yeah, when grandpa died about 6 years ago things were quiet
stressful and mom kept everybody from fighting especially some of the
grandkids. Dad and Uncle Jack were the only 2 kids that stuck around
and the other 2 kids left right after high school one is 50 and the
other is 40. My dad is 70 and my uncle is 65."
She asked, "Your grandma?"
Jessie said, " She is in a nursing home in town. We tried to keep her
home as long as possible but she got dementia and now it is a short time
before she passes away. She is now to the point she recognizes no
one."
Mandy said, "Oh that is too bad."
Jessie said, "Oh that is quiet alright she is 98 years old she has lived
a long life and not only that she has documented her life on tape 14
years ago and I have one of those tapes."
Mandy said, "That is good, and I have to tell you I think I love your
family."
Jessie said, "Wow, well 8 years ago I did date a girl and on my second
date my parents came and she wasn't impressed."
Mandy said, "Maybe the problem is she couldn't appreciate a close knit
family."
Jessie said, "Close knit alright almost strangling at times but that
came from us relying on each other."
She said, "Though I came from a nuclear family we weren't like this."
Jessie said, "Maybe because you were raised in a city and maybe not I
don't know. We do share a lot of family dinners on Sundays if you like
that thought you will love that."
Mandy said, "Sunday family dinners really?"
He said, "Yeah and we all throw in and help each other in harvest season
and the wives will try to out do each other when it comes to cooking."
Mandy said, "I thought that was only in books."
Jessie said, "Nope it is here."
Mandy said, "I know I will love living here."
Jessie laughed and said, "Dad and Uncle Jack have said you have me."
Mandy smiled and said, "Don't you doubt them and like your mom said you
have been a bachelor too long."
I laughed and said, "Looks like my family is with you on this."
She laughed and said, "Your family knows best. Will u look at the time
it is almost 11 and I need to get going I have to meet with a client
tomorrow."
They walked to her car and they kissed each other a little more
passionately this time than she climbed into the car.
She asked, "When can I see you again?"
Jessie said, "Well, tomorrow I am hoping to start plowing tomorrow and
get the soybeans by Friday. Hopefully we can see each other Friday
night."
She gave him her phone number and pulled out and he watched her until he
couldn't see her and than went inside.
He went in the bedroom and started stripping down to his boxers and
climbed into bed. He laid awake for a few minutes thinking about today
and thinking about how strange it was. His family was there first his
uncle and aunt they sat with at the caf? and than his mom and dad which
they spent the rest of the afternoon with. Not only that Mandy loved it,
it seemed. After thinking about it he slowly fell asleep.
