"Gladdily!" ====> Some time later Krazy scampers up an uncomplete pyramid of bricks that's as big as a house and places it into a gap on the top row. Hearts appear over her head as she contemplates the number of times Ignatz has beaned her with a brick. A hand drawn sign slung between two gnarled manzanita branches down at the base of the structure declares it to be the "PYRAMID OF LOVE"... (Hey, it's KRAZY KAT. I don't get it either!) ********************************** ********************************** I don't know that George Herriman, who created Krazy Kat and the wunnafly demented desert landscapes of "Coconino County" over a century ago, would consider Krazy to be what us modern folks call transgender, in the sense of having been born one sex and identifying as another. Herriman refused to be pinned down on the question of what sex his creation "really" was (it was a question that he got asked a lot over the years...) but preferred to present Krazy as a boy in one of his daily five panel comics, and a girl in the next; or what we would nowadays call "genderfluid". When Krazy made the jump from the newspaper comics pages to cartoons, one of the companies who had bought the rights to the strip decided that he should be unambiguously male, and another 10-15 years later made her consistently female. Krazy hizzorherself never seemed to mind... But in all these diverse incarnations, the one character in Krazy Kat who consistently referred to The Kat as "he" and "him", was the same one who had an all-consuming hatred for this sweet loveable kitty, and spent his days plotting to smash her head with a brick (While Krazy---who just refused to see the bad in people, and didn't seem able to feel pain--- mistook these daily brick-beanings for acts of affection...). And since no other reason has ever been given for his deranged vendetta against Krazy, it didn't seem like too big of a stretch for me to make Ignatz Mouse into a transphobe- one of those uptight creeps who get dangerously bent out of shape at the thought of someone being in any way gender variant. After that the rest of the plot and dialogue all just fell into place... It's my hope that Mr. Herriman would forgive the liberties I've taken with his characters; and that my humble fanfic came somewhere near to doing justice to the artistic and literary genius that was KRAZY KAT... (SO WHADJA THINK? ANY COMMENTS WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED...)
