Breakfast was pleasant enough, everyone chatted on as if today was any
other day, and no one even mentioned the fact that Kyle was no longer
there, as if he had never existed, and that made Katie sad. Had he made
so little an impression on his fellow students that he could vanish
mysteriously overnight and no one seemed to care? On the other hand,
however, everyone seemed to be very interested in Katie. Ernie
McMillian wanted to know if Katie collected Chocolate frog cards, Justin
Flinch-Fletchly was very curious about Katie's Muggle life, Zacharias
Smith, as usual was a complete pratt, but the most curious was Cedric
Diggory. Cedric was a 6th year student, and a prefect for Hufflepuff,
and he had been pleasant to Kyle in past years, but he seemed more
interested in Katie.
"Hi, I'm Cedric," he said when he came over as he smiled. "I'm a
Prefect, if you need help with Anything... you let me know." Katie found
his Grey eyes to be mesmerizing, and wondered why she had never noticed
that before as he left.
As everyone finished Breakfast, the 4th year Hufflepuffs headed off to
their Potions class. Hannah was preparing to wait for Katie, but Katie
had to talk to Hermione as soon as she could, and convinced Hannah to go
with Susan and the others, and that Katie would meet the girls there.
Katie slid out from the table as Hannah skipped off to catch up to
Susan, and walked over to the Gryffindor table. Hermione was sitting
with two of her classmates, that Potter kid, that Kyle had been so
jealous of, and the Ginger. Hermione noticed immediately when Katie
reached them and jumped to her feet.
"Um, Sorry. I... Uh... forgot I have something to do before
Transfiguration." Hermione quickly left the two boys in a curious
stupor as she ushered Katie out into the Entrance Hall. The Entrance
Hall was filled with Students leaving The Great Hall and heading in all
directions for classes, so Hermione, with a perplexing look, took Katie
out the side doors into the Courtyard, where they were alone.
"Kyle...." Hermione said, with a pleased smile, as she held Katie's
shoulders and looked her up and down, awkwardly. "You look...." She
paused, "pretty." She said with a laugh.
"Why do you sound so surprised?" Katie joked as she played with her
hair, and twisted her toe demurely.
"Please don't do that." Hermione laughed. "Who helped you with...."
Hermione motioned to Katie's face and hair. "...all this?"
"Oh, Hannah did," Katie explained. "She insisted that I had to have my
hair fixed, and some Lip gloss before I left the Dormitories this
morning..."
"Well, you really do look quite good," Hermione said, perhaps a little
jealously.
"Thanks..." Katie answered with a tinge of regret, as Hermione had never
before commented on her looks. "It's good to know that I had to get
turned into a girl before you noticed I was good looking..." Katie said.
"Oh, Kyle... I'm so sorry," Hermione tried to explain. "I- I-" she started
to stutter. "I never thought you thought of me in that way, so I never
thought to think of you in that way. You were like a brother to me, but
better, I know you were always there for me, and I could always count on
you... Oh God, Kyle, I'm so sorry!" Her eyes started to shimmer as Katie
could see the tears forming.
"Hermione..." Katie started, but she couldn't think of what to say, so
instead she just pulled Hermione into a hug. "I'm always going to be
there for you. You're my best friend. Even if you did change my
gender, and forced me to live the rest of my life as a girl, I still
love you." Hermione hugged her back, more tightly.
"I'm going to fix you, Kyle," Hermione said as the embrace ended. "I'm
going to find a way to make you a man again." her face was steely in its
determination and that made Katie feel a lot better about her situation,
knowing that her friend was going to make sure it was temporary.
"I guess, in the meantime, I need to get used to wearing skirts..." Katie
said intending to lighten the mood, as she grabbed at the hem of her
skirt with both hands and fluttered it.
"Well," Hermione laughed. "It helps that you have really nice legs." And
Katie started laughing too.
"They are nice, aren't they?" Katie giggled as she admired them herself,
and her giggle, made Hermione giggle, and soon the two girls were both
giggling.
"Okay, we've got to get to class," Hermione said noticing the time.
"I'll see you at Defense Against the Dark Arts, later, right?"
"Yes, I'll see you later." Katie hugged Hermione again, as the girls
parted ways, Hermione, dashing off the far side corridor toward the
Transfiguration wing, and leaving Katie to go back to the Grand
staircase to the Dungeons and her Potions class.
Snape was in rare form during their Potions class that day, and Katie
did her best to stay out of his line of fire, and just get through class
without her Professor noticing her or singling her out for something she
was invariably doing wrong. She made it through unscathed, of which the
same couldn't be said for Zacharias. Snape had found that Zacharias had
not added the proper amount of Newt fingers to his potion, and made him
drink the resulting concoction, which made all of Zacharias' hair fall
out. Snape then spent the final 15 minutes of class berating Zacharias
on his attention to detail, and the importance of following directions,
which then ensured that Zacharias would be seen by everyone in the halls
as he made his way to the Hospital wing, bald as a Bludger.
After lunch, Katie and the rest of the fourth year Hufflepuffs had
Defense Agaisnt the Dark Arts, with Professor Moody, and they found the
Gryffindors waiting in the hall outside of the classroom, eager and
excited. Professor Moody opened the doors to the class, and as the
class started to file in, Hermione showed up.
"Been in the-" Hermione started to explain to her friends.
"Library," Harry finished her sentence for her. "C'mon, quick, or we
won't get decent seats." Hermione and the other two boys took seats at
the front of the classroom, and everyone was starting to take their
books out when they heard the gruff voice of their teacher.
"You can put those away," he growled, stumping over to his desk and
sitting down, "those books. You won't need them."
Professor Moody took out a list, shook his long mane of frazzled grey
hair out of his scarred face, and began to call out attendance. His
normal eye was fixed on the list in front of him, as his Magical eye
twisted around and fixed itself on each student as they responded to
their names. Katie felt a chill down her spine as he called out her
name and his eye floated over her and she felt it staring right through
her soul as she responded to him.
"Right then," Professor Moody said, when the last person had declared
themselves present, "I've had a letter from Professor Lupin about this
class. Seems you've had a pretty thorough grounding in tackling Dark
creatures - you've covered boggarts, Red Caps, hinkypunks, grindylows,
Kappas, and werewolves, is that right?" Everyone agreed this was
correct. "But you're behind - very behind - on dealing with curses,"
said Professor Moody. "So I'm here to bring you up to scratch on what
wizards can do to each other. I've got one year to teach you how to deal
with Dark-"
"What, aren't you staying?" Hermione's Ginger friend blurted out like an
idiot. Professor Moody's magical eye spun around to stare at the Ginger,
he looked as if he was about to crap himself, but after a moment
Professor Moody smiled, which was unnerving.
"You'll be Arthur Weasley's son, eh?" Professor Moody said. "Your father
got me out of a very tight corner a few days ago....Yeah, I'm staying
just the one year. Special favor to Dumbledor....One year, and then back
to my quiet retirement." He gave a harsh laugh, and then clapped his
gnarled hands together. "So - straight into it. Curses. They come in
many strengths and forms. Now, according to the Ministry of Magic, I'm
supposed to teach you countercurses and leave it at that. I'm not
supposed to show you what illegal Dark curses look like until you're in
the sixth year. You're not supposed to be old enough to deal with it
till then. But Professor Dumbledore's got a higher opinion of your
nerves, he reckons you can cope, and I say, the sooner you know what
you're up against, the better. How are you supposed to defend yourself
against something you've never seen? A wizard who's about to put an
illegal curse on you isn't going to tell you what he's about to do. He's
not going to do it nice and polite to your face. You need to be
prepared. You need to be alert and watchful. You need to put that away,
Miss Brown, when I'm talking."
Lavender Brown jumped in her seat as her face turned red. She had been
showing her friend something under the desk. Apparently Professor
Moody's magical eye could see through solid wood, as well as out of the
back of his head.
"So...do any of you know which curses are most heavily punished by
wizarding law?" Several hands rose tentatively into the air, including,
of course, Hermione's. Professor Moody pointed at the Ginger, though his
magical eye was still fixed on Lavender.
"Er, my dad told me about one....Is it called the Imperius Curse, or
something?" The Ginger said hesitantly.
"Ah, yes," said Professor Moody appreciatively. "Your father would know
that one. Gave the Ministry a lot of trouble at one time, the Imperius
Curse." Professor Moody got heavily to his mismatched feet, opened his
desk drawer, and took out a glass jar. Three large black spiders were
scuttling around inside it. Katie saw Hannah move back, even though they
were several rows back from the front of the class.
Professor Moody reached into the jar, caught one of the spiders, and
held it in the palm of his hand so that they could all see it. He then
pointed his wand at it and muttered, "Imperio!"
The spider leapt from Professor Moody's hand on a fine thread of silk
and began to swing backward and forward as though on a trapeze. It
stretched out its legs rigidly, then did a back flip, breaking the
thread and landing on the desk, where it began to cartwheel in circles.
Professor Moody jerked his wand, and the spider rose onto two of its
hind legs and went into what was unmistakably a tap dance.
Everyone was laughing - everyone except Professor Moody.
"Think it's funny, do you?" he growled. "You'd like it, would you, if I
did it to you?" The laughter died away almost instantly.
"Total control," said Professor Moody quietly as the spider balled
itself up and began to roll over and over. "I could make it jump out of
the window, drown itself, throw itself down one of your throats. Years
back, there were a lot of witches and wizards being controlled by the
Imperius Curse. Some job for the Ministry, trying to sort out who was
being forced to act, and who was acting of their own free will."
"The Imperius Curse can be fought," he continued "and I'll be teaching
you how, but it takes real strength of character, and not everyone's got
it. Better avoid being hit with it if you can. CONSTANT VIGILANCE!" he
barked, and everyone jumped. Professor Moody picked up the somersaulting
spider and threw it back into the jar. "Anyone else know one? Another
illegal curse?"
Hermione's hand flew into the air again as did a few other students,
less now than before.
"Yes?" said Professor Moody, his magical eye rolling right over to fix
on the chubby and nervous Gryffindor Katie knew to be Neville
Longbottom. He was a great student in their Herbology class, but she
knew he was completely useless at most everything else.
"There's one - the Cruciatus Curse," said Neville in a meek voice.
Professor Moody was looking very intently at Neville, this time with
both eyes.
"Your name's Longbottom?" he said, his magical eye swooping down to
check the register again. Neville nodded nervously, but Professor Moody
made no further inquiries. Turning back to the class at large, he
reached into the jar for the next spider and placed it upon the desktop,
where it remained motionless, apparently too scared to move.
"The Cruciatus Curse," said Professor Moody. "Needs to be a bit bigger
for you to get the idea," he said, pointing his wand at the spider.
"Engorgio!" The spider quadrupled in size, it was now as large as a
kitten. Hannah gasped, and pushed her chair as far from her desk as she
could, and Katie felt obligated to calm her down, as Katie took Hannah's
hand and whispered, "It's fine, Hannah. Don't worry, okay?"
Professor Moody raised his wand again, pointed it at the spider, and
muttered, "Crucio!" At once, the spider's legs bent in upon its body; it
rolled over and began to twitch horribly, rocking from side to side.
Professor Moody did not remove his wand, and the spider started to
shudder and jerk more violently -
"Stop it!" Hermione cried out. Katie noticed that Hermione wasn't
watching the spider anymore, but at Neville, and Katie, saw that
Neville's hands were clenched upon the desk in front of him, his
knuckles white, his eyes wide and horrified as if he were in pain
himself. Professor Moody raised his wand. The spider's legs relaxed, but
it continued to twitch.
"Reducio," Professor Moody muttered, and the spider shrank back to its
proper size. He put it back into the jar. "Pain," said Professor Moody
softly. "You don't need thumbscrews or knives to torture someone if you
can perform the Cruciatus Curse....That one was very popular once too."
He said almost longingly "Right...anyone know any others?"
Katie could see the looks on everyone's faces, she guessed they were all
wondering what was going to happen to the last spider. Hermione's hand
shook slightly as, for the third time, she raised it into the air, this
time, the lone one.
"Yes?" said Professor Moody, looking at her curiously.
"Avada Kedavra," Hermione whispered. Several people looked uneasily
around at her.
"Ah," said Professor Moody, another slight smile twisting his lopsided
mouth. "Yes, the last and worst. Avada Kedavra....the Killing Curse." He
put his hand into the glass jar, and almost as though it knew what was
coming, the third spider scuttled frantically around the bottom of the
jar, trying to evade Professor Moody's fingers, but he trapped it, and
placed it upon the desktop. It started to scuttle frantically across the
wooden surface.
Professor Moody raised his wand, and everyone felt a sudden thrill of
foreboding.
"Avada Kedavra!" Professor Moody roared his twisted face lit up by a
flash of blinding green light and a rushing sound, as though a vast,
invisible something was soaring through the air - instantaneously the
spider rolled over onto its back, unmarked, but unmistakably dead.
Several of the students stifled cries; The Ginger up front had thrown
himself backward and almost toppled off his seat as the now dead spider
skidded toward him. Professor Moody swept the dead spider off the desk
onto the floor.
"Not nice," he said calmly. "Not pleasant. And there's no countercurse.
There's no blocking it. Only one known person has ever survived it, and
he's sitting right in front of me."
Everyone looked around at Harry as his face grew red, and he stared
straight ahead, as if he didn't acknowledge the attention, it would just
go away.
"Avada Kedavra's a curse that needs a powerful bit of magic behind it,"
Professor Moody growled. "You could all get your wands out now and point
them at me and say the words, and I doubt I'd get so much as a
nosebleed. But that doesn't matter. I'm not here to teach you how to do
it. Now, if there's no countercurse, why am I showing you? Because
you've got to know. You've got to appreciate what the worst is. You
don't want to find yourself in a situation where you're facing it.
CONSTANT VIGILANCE!" he roared, and the whole class jumped again.
"Now...those three curses - Avada Kedavra, Imperius, and Cruciatus - are
known as the Unforgivable Curses. The use of any one of them on a fellow
human being is enough to earn a life sentence in Azkaban. That's what
you're up against. That's what I've got to teach you to fight. You need
preparing. You need arming. But most of all, you need to practice
constant, never-ceasing vigilance. Get out your quills...copy this
down...."
They spent the rest of the lesson taking notes on each of the
Unforgivable Curses. No one spoke until the bell rang - but when Moody
had dismissed them and they had left the classroom, a torrent of talk
burst forth. As Katie picked up her bag to leave, she heard his
gravelly voice.
"Katie... a moment," he said, as she felt that chill again. Hannah
squeaked out that she'd wait in the corridor outside as she scurried
away, leaving Katie alone with her Professor.
"Ye-Yes? P-Professor?" Katie stuttered nervously as she turned to face
him. He was at least two heads taller than her, even hunched over as he
was, and he seemed to be twice as wide as well. She looked up into his
scared and twisted face, and noticed his large blue eye was looking up
and down at her as he cracked a slight smile.
"Is Katie okay, or would you prefer..." He paused his grin growing.
"Kyle?" Katie felt her legs grow weak, as she backed up a step.
"What?" she said softly, her heart pounding in her chest.
"It's okay, Kyle..." That twisted smirk again. "The Headmaster has
informed the staff of the... incident... last night. And I want you to
know, if you have any problems at all, you just let me know and I will
be more than happy to help you."
"Help me?" she repeated confused.
"Absolutely," he growled.
"O-okay. Th-thanks," Katie stammered as she at started to leave.
"One more thing, Kyle." Again, he smiled as he said it. "I've spoken to
Professor Sprout, and she speaks very highly of your Herbology work."
"Really?" Katie was surprised.
"Indeed," he rumbled as he pulled a small book from inside his robes and
handed it to Katie.
"Magical Water Plants of the Mediterranean?" she read the cover aloud.
"Aye. I thought you may enjoy a little light reading." His grin was
lopsided "Now, off with you, your friend is growing impatient," he
grumbled as he dismissed her. Katie slid the book into her bag, slung
it over her shoulder and met Hannah out in the hall, who indeed looked
like she wanted to run.
"What did he want?" Hannah demanded in a hushed tone as she took Katie
by the hand and hurried her away with her.
Dinner that night went faster than Katie had realized, and she had
intended to meet with Hermione as soon as she had finished eating, but
Hermione wasn't at the Gryffindor table. Katie thought she may have
gone to the Library, but before she could make up her mind to check,
Hannah and Susan had insisted that Katie study with them and do their
Homework together. And that is what they did, sitting in a corner of
the Hufflepuff common room, the three girls, with books and parchment
spread out before them, scribbling away at their Potions homework.
Katie felt a sense of belonging she hadn't felt before, as she looked
around at Susan and Hannah, two girls who had all but ignored Kyle
before today, now seemed to want to be Katie's friends. Katie smiled to
herself as she thought that being a girl wasn't so bad after all. She
didn't notice that across the common room, Cedric Diggory was joking
around with his friends, stealing glances at her, and smiling to himself
as he noticed her smile.
