I was hearing less and less from Kabir each day. I knew long distance
relationships had their challenges but I had accepted that from the time
we had started dating. Lately, most of my messages were responded to a
day later and it seemed that I was the one who was always calling. For
him, I guess it was a case of "out of sight and out of mind." For me,
the distance made the heart grow fonder. However, I had made my peace
with the fact that maybe our relationship was not working out and it was
just a matter of time before formally calling it off instead of dragging

A couple of days before Anjali's birthday, I received a text from her
mother asking me if I could drop by her office as she had something
important to discuss with me. I dreaded the idea; she had an imposing
personality and to be honest, I was a bit scared of her. Nonetheless, I
was curious about what the talk could be about so I agreed. Maybe she
just wanted to offer me a job and that too in her Bangalore office? I
gigged at the thought. Wishful thinking girl.
I reached Mrs Mehta's office, which was in Gurgaon. The new glass and
steel building was impressive and as I was shown to her office by her
stone-faced secretary, I could only un-classily ogle at the impressive
d?cor and interior work. I knocked before I entered the CEO's office.
"Come in," I heard her say. As I entered, she got up from behind her
large glass and steel table and smiled.
"Neha! Thank you for coming. Could I get you something to drink?" she
asked.
"Thank you, Mrs Meha, I'd like a drink of water."
As she rang for her secretary and asked her to get water along with some
fresh juice, I looked at the lady. She was immaculately dressed in a
business suit and she certainly had maintained a figure to carry it off
at her age. Soon, she turned her attention back to me and said, "I
wanted to talk to you about Anjali." So finally she had gotten around to
thinking of him as Anjali and not Arjun, I thought to myself.
"Neha, Anjali wants to go back to living as Arjun. I understand she has
spoken to you about this. I wanted to talk to you about that," Mrs Mehta
said in a worrisome tone.
"Yes Mrs Mehta, Anjali did speak to me about this a couple of days
back."
"So, what did you said?" she said keenly.
"Well, I told her that I was surprised at the decision, which was
because I always think of Anjali as a woman and as a girlfriend. I did
not think she would ever go back to being a man and honestly, I do know
if she can successfully do that."
"Exactly! Ofcourse I was not in touch with her for a while before but
now I think of her as a daughter only. I don't know what she is thinking
or who has convinced her to go back to being a man. Have you seen her
lately? The other weekend, she and I went shopping for sarees and make
up. She does have a keen eye for fashion. Then we went for a hair spa
and got our nails done. Do you think a man would be able to do that or
would like to?" Mrs. Mehta said, with her voice getting louder.
"Anjali mentioned that she is seeing her therapist. Do you think it was
his suggestion?" I asked hopefully.
"Don't be silly. If that was the case, I wouldn't have called you.
That's an easy answer. On the other hand, Anjali mentioned that her
therapist was close to being convinced that she was a woman in a man's
body. Definitely not with a man's face ofcourse," Mrs Mehta said as a
matter of fact.
"Yes, she is beautiful. She is probably the prettiest of all the friends
that I have," I replied honestly.
"She is home now I think. I'll message and double check. Why don't you
come home with me and we can talk to her together," Mrs Mehta replied,
picking up her phone to message.
"Like, go now?" I asked uncertainly.
"Yes, now, if you don't mind? It would be a huge favor for me. Ah yes,
she's home," Mrs Mehta announced, as she got up and picked up her bag to
leave.
I wanted to be in this powerful woman's good books so I agreed. Within
an hour in Delhi's traffic, we were at the Mehta residence. As we
entered, Anjali walked out of her room. There is no way this person was
a man, I thought to myself. I just wondered why would god give a man
this gorgeous face, petite frame, hair that any shampoo model would be
jealous of and a hairless face. There was some problem in his
testosterone levels I was sure. Anjali was wearing cute white denim
shorts and a loose wide neck light pink blouse. The sleeves of the
blouse fell below her elbows. I could see that she had worn her hair in
a thick loose fishtail braid, with the braid falling in front over her
shoulder. Her expression registered a look of surprise seeing her mother
and I walk in together.
"Neha, what are you doing here?" she asked.
Mrs Mehta replied for me, "Anjali beta, Neha and I have to speak to you
about something. I have asked Neha to come along. I hope that is okay?."
"Depends on what you want to speak to me about," Anjali replied,
shrugging her shoulders, as we walked towards the couch to sit.
"It is about your decision to go back to living as a man. We are not
sure if that is the right decision for you," Mrs Mehta responded.
"And why would you say that? Do you know that I have planned to get my
hair cut off and get it done in a short boy's haircut this evening?"
Anjali replied defiantly.
"Anjali, I don't want to sound rude or mean but look at you! You are
wearing women's wear and I have not seen you in men's wear since you
moved back to Delhi. Your eyebrows are done, you always wear makeup
before leaving the house, your arms and legs are waxed, your mannerisms,
choice of words, the way you walk, everything...is...feminine. If you
were serious about going back to living as a man, I think you would have
started wearing men's wear atleast for starters. I don't think you have
thought this through," Mrs Mehta said, her voice trembling.
"And you think I should go on living as a girl because I look like one
and dress like one and behave like one?" Anjali asked with a smile.
"Yes," Mrs Mehta and I replied in unison.
"But do you two want to know if I feel like a man? It is what I feel
like inside that is important. I don't identify as a woman. I think
because of the way I look, I just don't stand out as an effeminate man
when I dress like a girl and that is why I carry on dressing the way I
do. About my mannerisms, I guess it is something that I will have to
consciously work on," Anjali continued defiantly.
"Are you attracted to men or women?" Mrs Mehta asked, rather carelessly.
"Now that is none of your business," came the cold hard reply.
I could see why these two had not got along in the past - their
personalities were just too strong. This was getting nowhere and a bit
out of hand. I had to step in. "Anjali, what your mother is saying is
that if you are sure, then we will support you. But we don't think you
are sure and that you have considered everything. If you go back to
being a guy, you will find it difficult. You have said yourself that you
stand out when dressed as a guy because of your mannerisms and the way
you look. Also, you grew your hair for five years and that is not a
guy's thing to do. We just think that physically you are so comfortable
being a girl that maybe from within you are one as well. You should
think about that."
Mrs Mehta was looking at me with new found respect and adoration. I had
won this woman over, I think.
"Anjali, now listen to me. I will not allow you to go back to living as
a man as long as you live in this house or want to take over my company.
I don't want people to pass comments about you behind my back - Mrs.
Mehta's effeminate son or other mean things that you or I would be
subjected to. We live in a bigoted old fashioned country unfortunately
but I have an image that I don't want to spoil. You can go live anywhere
else and I will even sustain you financially if you want to go back to
being a guy. But you can't do it here. Maybe one day if you change you
demeanor, mannerisms, your voice and basically your personality so that
there is no trace of a girl in you, I can accept you as my son. Not
before that," Mrs Mehta said in her best boardroom voice.
This was the first time that I thought that this lady was crazy. She was
putting her image and people's perception before her son's wishes. I
turned to look at Anjali - her eyes had watered, her face was red and
she was fuming. She got up and raced to her room.
Mrs Mehta got up, went to the kitchen and got us a drink of water. I
needed it.
"Mrs Mehta, now what?" I asked uncertainly.
She shrugged. "I am her mother. I know she wants the company. She wants
the wealth. She likes the good life. She will never leave."
"But what if she really doesn't want to carry on living as a girl?" I
asked, surprised at her answer.
She shrugged and looked away.
We sat in silence for a few minutes. Anjali came out and stood before
her mother.
"Mom, so you want to force your son to dress as a girl against his
wishes?" Anjali asked, her eyes teary.
"You are already living as a woman! You are dressed as a girl and always
are! All I am saying is that you should continue to dress as one," Mrs
Mehta said with exasperation.
The heated exchange carried on for what seemed like an hour. I was
getting progressively uncomfortable and tried my best to ignore the
conversation. Suddenly, I heard the name Kabir come up. My ears perked
up.
"Whhaa..a.t did you say?" I asked trembling.
Anjali gave me a cold stare as said, "We made out."
I didn't have the power to respond. Anjali probably realized it was one
step too far. She came and sat beside me and said, "Neha, I wanted to
make sure that I was not gay. I don't like Kabir like that. I just used
him to make sure I was not gay. I am sorry I used Kabir."
Tears were already in my eyes. Maybe that is why Kabir was being aloof.
I also didn't believe Anjali. The way she said it didn't seem genuine. I
knew her tone by now. Even if what she said about her not liking Kabir
was true, I was sure that Kabir didn't feel the same way. In my mind, it
was over between us.
Mrs Mehta spoke. "Anjali, what you did was terrible to say the least.
Atleast to Neha. Neha, I apologise to you from Anjali's behalf as well."
"Its okay Mrs Mehta. Not your fault," I replied, trying to maintain my
composure. I wanted to kill Anjali, the queen bitch. But I was sitting
in her house, with her mother around and I did not want to look weak.
And it was my fault. I had created this monster. I had dressed her up at
the first instance. I was partially to blame.
"Neha, I am sorry again. But don't think of me as a girl. I am not
trying to steal your boyfriend," Neha offered hopefully.
"Sure. The way you look, I don't see anything else than a girl. You are
not a man. You never will be a real man. Listen to your mother. Continue
to live the way you are. Become someone's wife one day. Which girl would
want you, unless she is lesbian." All my cold, mean, ice hearted
feelings came tumbling out.
There was silence. I felt better. Mrs Mehta looked shocked. Anjali
smiled. I hated that smile. "Fine. If that makes you feel better. I
deserved that. Day after is my birthday. I have sent flight tickets for
Kabir and he has agreed to fly down. It would be great to have you over
as well," she said and walked off. I got up and left without a word.
This day was the most eventful day in my life.
I had no intention of returning to that house but I knew Kabir was
coming down. He had not even bothered to tell me that he was coming to
visit. I messaged him saying I knew what had happened between him and
Anjali and that it was over between us. He tried calling me back but I
didn't take his call. He dropped me a message saying that he was sorry
and that I was right in leaving him. I sent him a simple, "Go to hell,"
message as a reply.
On the day of Anjali's birthday, I was in two minds. I could not believe
that I was considering to go back to that house but I wanted to see how
things would pan out. I knew Kabir and Arjun were friends and Kabir was
just coming to visit his friend. But I also knew that after you make
out, equations between people change and there was no way they could go
back to being the way they were, even if Anjali went back to living as a
guy.
I decided to go. I didn't want Ms Queen Bitch to outdo me so I wore my
best dress, primped my looked and tried to look the best I ever have. My
dress was strappy skater dress in blue. It come above my knees. I had
teamed it with dull gold dangly earrings and nude peep toes. As I
entered their house, I realized that Anjali had gone all out as well.
Anjali was wearing dull gold toned asymmetrical dress with a mini tulle
skirt and a sequined body. The back was tied using a bowed knot. Her
hair was open and was parted in the middle. She had pulled back one side
with a hair ornament. She was wearing diamond waterfall earrings that
dangled casually and three inch heeled gold pumps. Her gorgeous face was
done in pastel hues and her lips glittered in pink gloss. Her legs
belonged to a supermodel and her slim arms and shoulders shone. I didn't
stand a chance. I couldn't believe he was a guy and couldn't believe he
could ever want to go live as one.
She greeted me with a smile and hug. "I am glad you came."
I smiled back. "Happy Birthday Anjali."
"Thank you sweetie. Oh look, there's Kabir."
I caught my breath. I was dreading this meeting. As I turned, I saw him
staring at me. A split second later, I realized that I wasn't the one he
was staring at. As Anjali walked over to greet him, his stunned gaze
followed her. I saw them hug while I went to get myself a drink.
"Feeling okay?" I heard Mrs Mehta ask.
I turned and smiled. "Yes, thank you. Nice party. Anjali looks
gorgeous."
"Thank you. The dress is bit too short for my liking but its her
birthday. She should wear what she wants."
"So who are all these people? I am surprised your friends and relatives
are seeing Anjali and not Arjun. Doesn't that go against what you
wanted?"
"All these people are Anjali's closest friends from school and
university. We spoke to them beforehand and they are most accepting of
her decision. What I did not want is people talking behind our backs if
he goes back to living as a man. I don't think he will fit in very well
in the whole macho image."
I smiled as I did not have a reply and sipped my drink. Mrs Mehta
excused herself. I casually chatted with a few people and managed to
avoid Kabir in the humungous Mehta house. I kept thinking about the last
couple of months. I am a girl and I know when a guy checks me out. Even
when I was semi naked in Kabir and Arjun's house in Bangalore, I never
felt Arjun was checking me out. I never felt uncomfortable wearing
anything around him. We always connected as girls. When some hot guy
passed by, we exchanged looks as girls do, when we saw a cute dress on
our shopping trips, we both gushed at it like girls. Our girl talks,
bonding, etc. was always as two women. I was so sure that Kabir liked
men - we had gushed over many hot men on screen while watching movies. I
just don't know why he would deny it now.
I party continued and I was on my third glass of wine. The high society
of Delhi were pleasant to talk to and I began to enjoy myself. I could
see that Anjali was trying to devote her time to all her guests as much
as possible. I also noticed Kabir wiping a stain of cake from her
cheeks, checking her out when she wasn't looking and during a dance, I
saw him trying to smell her hair. That asshole. I was at the party and
he knew it. Men! Anjali did nothing to push him away. I just didn't
care. I was just happy that I got out of this sooner than later.
After an hour or so, I wanted to leave. I wanted to say my goodbyes to
the birthday girl before I did but I could not spot her in the crowd of
people. Looking for an available washroom to use before I left, I asked
Mrs Mehta for directions and she said that I could use the one in
Anjali's room. The door was unlocked and I walked right in...and gasped.
Kabir was standing with his pants down while holding up Anjali's hair.
Anjali's was on her knees in front of Kabir blowing him. A "Neha...I..."
managed to escape Kabir's lips before I ran out of the room and out of
that house. This was a fucked up guy and a very fucked up guy/girl. And
everyone was confused and everyone was a liar. I didn't want to know any
of them anymore, no matter how rich and influential the family was.
After that day, I got a message from both Mrs Mehta as well as from
Anjali, requesting if we could talk. I did not respond to any of them. I
was done with this place and had to get out of India. I applied for jobs
and found one in New York. It took me one more year to get over the
entire mess.
Several years later, I saw their wedding pictures on a Ved's facebook
page. Kabir in his blue shervani suit. Anjali in all her traditional
Indian wedding finery and looking gorgeous. She was wearing a light pink
designer legenga and a dull sequined gold choli, with her hair parted in
the middle. In the parting, she was wearing a gold maang teeka and heavy
gold and diamond jhumkas adorned her ears. She wore a bindi on her
forehead and her lips matched the color of the scarlet bindi. Her wrist
were adorned with bangles and both of them were smiling. I could see her
big hair bun through her translucent dupatta that was used as a veil to
cover half her head. Her tiny waist showed she had maintained herself. I
shut my laptop and stared over the New York skyline.
