Courtney and Robin meet
Again, here are two characters originally created by other writers of TG
fiction-Courtney by Katie Leone and then expanded on by me in a previous
sequel to her work. Robin Smith was created by Zoe Taylor in a (so far)
three volume trilogy. Since martial arts figures so prominently in many
of my stories, and Robin is already established as a student of Kenpo
Karate, it seemed a natural to write her into one of my own crossovers.
Again, I take no credit for these characters, and I heartily respect all
those writers of TG fiction who have the talent to create original works
and characters.
It was that time of year again-the Connecticut State Womens Karate
Invitational was being held in Newington (also famous for being the home
of the American Radio Relay League, the national association of Ham
Radio Operators). Female martial artists all over the eastern seaboard
and somewhat further inland were preparing for it. While there were
many tournaments held every year, most of them were co-ed, while this
one was special. Everyone there would be female, from the director, to
the ring judges, and all the competitors. It would be a chance for the
younger girls, especially, to meet in person many of the famous female
senior black belts in the region, who were only too happy to serve as
role models.
At her Maine dojo, college student Robin Smith was preparing for her
class in Kenpo Karate. She had begun classes several years before, with
her stepfather as her 'sensei', or teacher, and she now ranked as a
Nidan, or second degree black belt, with a certificate qualifying her as
an assistant instructor herself. She had chosen this university for
several reasons, one of them being that there was a Kenpo class on
campus. Due to her rank, she was one of the instructors, and had been
all of her freshman year and the part of the sophomore year that she had
completed. She was extremely youthful looking, and for class, wore her
hair in pigtails which made her look even younger. That she was so
young looking and also quite pretty was surprising. Robin Smith had
been born a boy, with the name of Robin, which was a unisex name. She
had begun her transition in high school, so she had gone through part of
male puberty before beginning blockers, but her development had been
arrested just in time. She had been a girl scout, a girl scout camp
counselor, an athlete and a cheerleader. She had undergone completion
surgery the summer after she graduated, and had begun college that fall.
She was one of those martial arts women whose training had been in
traditional, coed dojos, and was used to working out with men. She wore
her black uniform and belt proudly.
In New York City, Rainbow Dragon instructor and third degree black belt
Courtney LaMana (nee Barnes) and her best friend and student, first
degree black belt Jennifer Sweet were also training together. They were
members of, and taught the Karate class at, a well-known LGBT center in
the Chelsea district of Manhattan. The reason for their choice of
facilities was that both women were also transgender, Courtney from
Florida and Jennifer from Tennessee. Courtney's husband was a lawyer in
the same firm as Jennifer's, and Jennifer's husband was Sean Sweet, a
pitcher for the New York Mets. To complete the coincidence, Rainbow
Dragon had been founded by a transgender (sort of-actually she was CAIS)
woman named Emma Cole (nee Smith) whose brother was a second string
player for the New York Giants. Basically, everybody knew everbody else
at this level. Both husbands knew quite well that their wives were
transgender, and both had been fully accepting of the situation for
years.
Courtney and Tony had been dating since her freshman and his senior year
in high school, long before her surgery, while Sean and Jennifer had
known each other since pre-school, though it was only as high school
seniors that Sean had become aware of all the facts. It had been a
shock to him at first, but it only took a short time for him to come
around and realize how much he loved her, and didn't want to spend his
life without her. Due to serious abuse, Jennifer had actually
transitioned around age three, as it was medically necessary for her to
do so. Their law firm was a general one, covering all sorts of cases,
though they had covered many cases involving the LGBT community, often
Pro Bono, if the client couldn't pay, as was often the case. At the
moment, the two women were sparring, with one of the club brown belts
acting as referee. Courtney was more experienced than Jennifer was,
though Rainbow Dragon was a tough school.
Every RD student was capable of holding their own against anyone of
equal (or often superior) rank in any situation. That meant either
tournament or street. Effectively. The ladies wore traditional Tae
Kwon Do uniforms consisting of a vee necked pull over top, with white
pants and a black belt, with the appropriate number of gold stripes
embroidered at the tip, three in Courtney's case, one in Jennifer's.
Their uniform tops were trimmed at the vee with a one inch black band,
with another around the hem. They both wore Rainbow Dragon patches on
their left breasts, and were proud of that patch. They both believed in
giving back to their community and doing their best to help it's members
learn to protect themselves against any kind of bigotry, which was
mostly religious in the current climate.
All three of these ladies, and many more were rigoriously training for
the Connecticut tournament, and all wanted to make a good showing.
There would be karateka from many styles in attendance, Korean,
Japanese, Okinawan and even a few Chinese Kung fu practicioners. A
large contingent from the American Isshinryu Association, based in New
Jersey but with members nationwide was expected. Robin and Courtney
independently knew they would be tough, especially one woman from
Pennsylvania, a third degree black belt named Vicky, with a long track
record of wins, dating back to her white belt days. Her younger sister
Chrissie was just as formidable. Chrissie was a shodan (first degree),
but everyone knew she would be promoted soon, perhaps even on the basis
of her performance at this tournament. While men weren't exactly barred
from attendance, it was universally accepted that only women would be
there-the senior woman from each group would act as sensei to look out
for the interests of her friends. In Courtney's case, that was no
problem. She WAS the instructor (sabonim in Korean).
The day of the tournament finally arrived. Strong, confident women and
girls from all over the northeast converged on a small town in
Connecticut to test their skills and make or renew acquaintences with
other like minded females. In addition to uniforms and fighting pads,
many of the competitors carried a traditional weapon-staffs, tonfa, sai
and swords of many styles were there in abundance. Courtney herself
bore a pair of sai (small, pronged truncheons designed to catch and
break a sword) and planned on entering the weapons competition in
addition to fighting and regular kata. She had learned an Okinawan sai
kata from Isshinryu, Chatanyara No Sai, a very advanced form, taught to
senior black belt holders. She knew that the judges would be surprised
to see her, a Korean stylist performing a weapons form at all, let alone
one from Okinawa.
As Courtney and Jennifer walked in the door to the school where the
event was to take place, they accidently bumped into a slightly younger
girl carrying a bag with a Kenpo patch attached. The three began
talking, and they noticed something about each other, something that
seemed slightly off. Robin's hands appeared to be slightly large for
her body frame, though not by much. As the girls talked, they realized
they had something in common. They had all either been born as or
assigned male gender at birth, though they were all now legally and
physically females. This gave the girls a starting point for a
friendship, which they took advantage of. They also discovered that
they would all be in the same division, first through third degree black
belt, ages 18 to 34. Younger, older and more senior black belt women
would be in different divisions. They also realized they would be in
the same division as the sisters from Pennsylvania, who had a reputation
for ruthlessness in the ring. Vicky, especially, had a tactic of
deliberately hurting her opponent in the beginning, sacrificing a point,
but intimidating the other woman into hesitation. She would then
proceed to demolish her with a flurry of punches and kicks exactly
following the rules, she was that good. Robin and Courtney each figured
that one of them, at least, would be the one to face her. The two girls
knew of each others reputations, though they had never met before.
As usual, the competition began with weapons form competition. Since
very few lower belts knew any weapons forms, the white and green belt
divisions (which included yellow, orange, blue and purple belt holders
also) went through rather quickly, with the few who entered mostly doing
basic staff forms, such as Tokumene No Kun, from Okinawa. The brown
belts went next, and there were many more of them. They performed a
good mix of weapons, including the sai and nunchaku. One Chinese
stylist performed with a 'quando', a heavy bladed halberd. Her
technique was flawless, and she walked away with the first place trophy.
The black belt divisions were called next.
Jennifer was only just learning a staff form, so she chose not to enter.
Courtney performed with her Sai, and received a very high score from the
judges. Robin performed a sword form, and also did well. They saw
Vicky up with a pair of Tonfa, performing an Isshinryu form named Hama
Higa no Tuifa. They learned that Tuifa was the Isshinryu name for the
Tonfa. While she technically knew the form, it was obvious that her
forte was fighting, as she came nowhere near a high enough score to
place. They could also tell that Vicky didn't much care, either. She
had learned enough for her Sandan rank, and only needed to do kata for
one more promotion-and that would probably be the last ones she ever
learned. When the scoring was completed, Robin had taken 2nd place and
Courtney was awarded the 3rd place trophy. So far so good.
Empty hand kata was next on the agenda. Jennifer and Courtney saw a
good mix of forms from many systems, some very similar to their own TKD
hyungs, some very different. Robin demonstrated an American Kenpo form
named Long Form Three, while Vicky performed the signature isshinryu
form Sunsu. While every Isshinryu practitioner of first brown belt rank
and above knew it, again, Vicky wasn't all that good at it. Again, she
really couldn't care less. Jennifer performed Chung-Mu, their shodan
form, while Courtney's choice was Kae-beck, the form required for second
degree black belt in their system. Again, she did well enough to place,
with another third place award.
And now the ladies were to fight, by chance, there were exactly 16 women
in their division, so no byes had to be awarded. The officials
separated the competitors, seeding the second and third degree holders
so that they wouldn't meet until the later rounds. As luck would have
it, Vicky and Jennifer were the first match called. True to form, Vicky
lashed out with a wicked side kick to Jen's stomach, forcefully
propelling her out of the ring. Having trained with Rainbow Dragon,
Jennifer wasn't intimidated in the least. She did lose, but it was a
hard fought three minute match ending three to two in Vicky's favor.
Jen did return the favor with a hard roundhouse kick to the ribs,
though. The division continued.
After the first round, Robin, Vicky and Courtney were still in
contention, with only eight women left. All three won their next match
also, with Chrissie losing to another woman from Shotokan. Only four
left now. Vicky was matched against Robin, while Courtney faced the
Shotokan woman.
Robin was good- but not quite good enough. Robin had seen Vicky using
her intimidation technique and had whispered for her NOT to try it, or
Robin would accept disqualification and knock the other girl's head off.
She got the message. In a hard fought match, Vicky again won three to
two. Courtney had an easier time, winning three to one in a full three
minute match. Up came the finals.
First was the deciding match for third place-which Robin won, taking
home a trophy for her efforts. Courtney and Vicky squared off, each
planning to make things as difficult as possible for her opponent.
Vicky scored first, with a roundhouse to the head, while Courtney
followed upwith a punch to the chest, with them both happy for the
padding requirement. Each girl managed to score one more time with only
a few seconds left. Then Vicky had some bad luck.
The floor was sweaty from all the exertion that afternoon. As she went
in for a kick, Vicky slipped slightly, giving Courtney an opening. She
took advantage of it-and slammed a side kick into Vicky's unguarded
chest. Winner-Courtney LaMana of Rainbow Dragon Tae Kwon do.
All three girls had had a long day-as Black Belts, they had been
utilized as ring judges for the majority of the day before their
division had been called. They hit the ladies locker room (all three of
them had completed SRS, so no one knew the difference). As it was late
afternoon, they decided to go out together for dinner, since none of
them were responsible for any younger girls on this particular day. The
three of them chose Olive
Garden, with it's unlimited soup or salad option. As transgender women,
all three of them had independently chosen to fully embrace being
female, since they had to work so hard for it. In other words,
aggressive as they might be in the ring, afterwards all of them changed
into skirts, Robin in a denim mini, Courtney in a blue a-line and Jen in
a black pencil, all of them wearing three inch heels. Unlike a lot of
the ladies, the three of them took time on their makeup, most of their
peers did only the minimum since they were going out in public, though
not necessarily to a restaurant.
They entered and gave the server their drink orders, Courtney and Jen
having Iced tea, while Robin, who had just turned 21 had a glass of red
wine since they were having Italian. They had a lot to talk about, such
as coming out, early experiences, surgery, acceptance by others,
boyfriends/husbands, and of course, sex. While Courtney and Jen were
married, Robin was a few years younger with a boyfriend. She had
finally given herself to him the previous New Years Eve when he had
presented HER with a ring. She found this rather incongruous, since she
had long considered herself a lesbian in high school, and had never
dreamed that she would ever be with a man. But the senior student in
her dojo had asked her out after she had received her black belt (it
wouldn't have been appropriate before that) and to her own surprise, she
accepted. Things escalated from there. She mentioned that she was pre-
law, and hoped to be an attorney specializing in gender minority
discrimination cases. Jennifer encouraged her, but told her that cases
like that wouldn't keep her in practice. She would have to specialize
in another area such as criminal defense, corporate or real estate, and
then she could take cases like that for her pro bono legal aid service.
Courtney mentioned that she was a PhD in Psychology, and DID work with
that community, and that her husband was a lawyer in the same firm as
Jennifer.
Robin asked about the Rainbow Dragon organization. She found out that
it was primarily an LGBT support group, but that anyone who wished to
could train with them and become a member. Almost a dozen campuses had
branches, with students from many systems working out with the club, but
it was really a Tae Kwon Do organization. Courtney knew the founder and
head master of the system, and asked Robin if she would like her to talk
to Master Cole about opening the group to other styles, to increase the
power and protection for their community. Robin was amazed to find out
that Master Emma Cole, the founder was herself sort of transgender.
Sort of, because she actually had a genetic disorder called Complete
Androgen Immunity Syndrome, CAIS for short. This prevented her body
from being able to use testosterone, even if her own body produced it.
She actually had rudimentary female genitals in addition to her male
ones, and at age 12, it had been decided that she should be raised as a
girl, which is what she felt like anyway. An attack on her home by some
religious bigots had motivated her to begin training with her security
team. She had begun teaching in high school and had founded Rainbow
Dragon in college. Robin liked the idea and readily accepted, stating
that she had a few unfortunate experiences of her own. Strength in
numbers was the way to go. The three girls separated after exchanging
email addresses and phone numbers, and promised to stay in touch. They
told Robin about the center where they trained, and invited her to come
down any time. They'd love to show her Manhattan at night.
Life went on for all of them for the next few weeks. Emma Cole decided
to expand the group, creating both a Rainbow Dragon Federation open to
anyone from any martial arts system, and the Rainbow Dragon Tae Kwon Do
Association, part of the International Tae Kwon Do Association. The
latter would teach only the classical (more or less, General Choi Hong
Hi had defined the system only after World War II, based on a Korean art
called 'Tae Kyun') style of Tae Kwon Do, with the original forms. There
were at least two other major organizations using different and newer
forms, many members of them were training at Rainbow Dragon college
dojangs. When college got out for the summer, Robin came down to visit
her friends. That's when it hit the fan.
A bigoted hate group styling themselves the Warriors of God had heard
about the Rainbow Dragon group. They figured (wrongly) that it was a
bunch of snowflake 'faggots' who couldn't fight their way out of a paper
bag. As most of them were accomplished street fighters, some with
martial arts experience, they decided that they were going to teach the
abominations a lesson, since God (in their opinion!) hated their
perversions. On a particular night, they rushed their way into the LGBT
center asd attacked. There were over a dozen of them, armed with
baseball bats. Unfortunately for the attackers, tonight happened to be
bo staff training night at Rainbow Dragon, and the class jumped into
action. The girl at the front desk was already down, seriously injured
from a bat strike, so the 20 or so senior students moved to defend their
sanctuary. When they were finished, their staffs twirling, all of the
'warriors of God' were down, moaning in agony.
The police had already been called, so in her professional persona,
Jennifer Sweet, JD, Esq. took charge of the investigation. She pulled
her Bar Association Card from her purse to show to the sergeant in
command and insisted that the bigots be arrested and charged. She also
informed them that civil charges would be forthcoming from her firm, and
that their instructor's husband, also an attorney, would be a part of
the legal team. The police sergeant, knowing who she was by reputation
and also who her husband was, and not wanting any bad publicity or a
report to his captain (or higher!) saw the wisdom in her demand, and had
the damaged ruffians cuffed and loaded into a patrol wagon. The members
of the class all changed and made their way to the precinct where they
gave their statements. Both criminally and financially, the Warriors of
God were finished. They tried to plead Freedom of Religion and other
ultra conservative tactics, backed up by a certain 'church' in Kansas,
but it didn't work. This was deep blue New York City, famous for
electing a large proportion of progressives to office, including the
current mayor. Game, set and match for the LGBT community in this
instance.
Courtney and Tony stayed in New York City, as they had no wish to return
to their Florida home, given the current political situation there.
Sean Sweet was a few years from retirement from the Mets, but his wife
Jennifer had a thriving practice in the city, and was planning to open
her own firm in partnership with Tony. They chose to stay also, though
they were quite welcome in their Tennessee home town, as well as that of
a young woman named Desiree, also transgender, who Jennifer had
represented in a particularly ugly court case. Both of them continued
to train and teach at the LGBT center as Rainbow Dragon instructors.
The senior instructors of the organization gathered, realizing that they
were limited to fifth degree black belt by virtue of the fact that the
founder and grandmaster was only a sixth degree. This put them at a
disadvantage with their peers, similar to that faced decades earlier in
Japan by the Shotokan style.
Master Funakoshi had felt that no one should be higher than a fifth
degree, so it took the senior instructors combined pressure to convince
the then head to accept eighth degree rank, later promotions to tenth
degree following. Master Cole of Rainbow Dragon was only a sixth
degree, so she was promoted-by unanimous acclaimation of the board-to
ninth degree, with her instructor (Gia Coretti} being awarded a tenth
degree, though she never wore it. She considered it mostly honorary.
This resulted in a flurry of senior promotions-Courtney wound up a fifth
degree black belt, just short of master status herself. Jennifer
received a third degree and instructor certification in her own name,
though she stayed at the center. Robin chose to only receive rank from
her own sensei (and stepfather) and eventually earned a fourth degree
black belt from him. The three-and others were well on their way
towards giving back to the transgender community and all of it's
offshoots. As well as Courtney and Jennifer being loving wives and
doting mothers to their adopted children.
