Elizabeth was smiling during the entire lunch, so I knew she knew. She
didn't say anything but she didn't need to say a word. Mom was acting
like nothing had happened and I was hoping that nothing else was going
to be said about my incident. That was wishful thinking as I soon found
out.
I got ready for bed when Mom came in to my room. Unfortunately, it was
her day off.
"Have you worn my clothes before this week?" she asked. "Or Elizabeth's
clothes, too."
It seemed better for me not to lie anymore, so I said, "Yes a few
times."
"And you like wearing our clothes?" I couldn't read what she was
thinking about all this from her words or her tone of voice. But I felt
her attitude wasn't approval.
"I guess so, yes," I answered. "I don't know why I did it. I will
never do it again."
"Well, young lady, I'm sorry but I have decided that you WILL do it
again." As she told this news she raised her eyebrow. One eyebrow.
When only one was raised, always the right eyebrow, it was never a good
sign.
She continued. "I want to be sure that you get enough of being a girl.
You are going to dress as a girl when you come home after school and
week-ends. We will both find out how much you enjoy this activity and
if you possibly would like to be a girl."
"But, Mom......" she interrupted my lame attempt to explain why her idea
was terrible.
"You will do what I say. And you will do it for as long as I say. I
need to analyze the reason for your dressing up." Mom laid down the
law.
I nodded and frowned thinking how this was going to turn out.
"You will not be wearing my clothes or Elizabeth's clothes, either. We
will go buy you your own girl clothes that will fit nicely," she stated.
"My own girl clothes?" I asked. "That will be too expensive Mom. Maybe
we can just wait until..."
"Nope." Another interruption by Mom. "I have decided and that's what
we are going to do. We will go to the J. C. Penny's or Missy's to buy
you some clothes. So don't plan on doing anything else on Saturday."
"How will I be able to hide from Thomas and Elizabeth, if I have to wear
girl clothes so much?" I was almost in tears when those words came out.
"They will make fun of me."
"Yes they probably will make fun of you. Can't say you haven't had
experience with being made fun of while wearing dresses." She said
almost teasingly. "But I will make them settle down when it starts and
after a week I am sure that everyone in the house will just think it is
normal to see Jimmy wearing girl's clothes. Or maybe I should say
Jennifer."
She leaned over and kissed me on the cheek. "It won't be too bad maybe
you will enjoy it. Good night Jennifer."
She turned out the light and left my room. I didn't sleep much that
night thinking about Saturday.
"It's Saturday, sleepy head." Mom was in my room and opening the
curtains as a lot of sunlight filled my sleepy eyes. "We have a lot to
do today, remember?"
Oh like no Mom I forgot. What does it being Saturday mean?
"Get up take a shower and come to breakfast then you, Elizabeth and I
are going shopping." She acted like I was supposed to be happy about
going shopping. Wait a minute. "Elizabeth?" I blurted.
"Yes she wants to come with us and I want her help in choosing your
clothes. Do you have a problem with Elizabeth joining us?" There was
that eyebrow again.
"No Mom I guess it's alright," I said as I felt doomed that I was going
to look very silly soon. "Might as well bring Thomas too," I said
sarcastically.
"What was that? What did you say?" she asked.
"Nothing Mom. I'm up, I'm up," I said as I headed for the shower.
We had breakfast and Elizabeth was ever so chatty about going shopping
and asking Mom about what she could get too. Thomas on the other hand
acted as though he couldn't care less what we were talking about. Maybe
he didn't know yet.
"Mom," said Elizabeth. "Are we going to get Jimmy a bra also?"
Well that's that if Thomas didn't know he does now.
"Of course we are. All girls his age need a bra, at least a training
bra," Mom answered.
"I don't want to hear anything about girl's bras or panties. Thomas
chimed in, save it for when you three girls go shopping. If it's okay
Mom I am going over to Larry's for the day."
"Sure honey. Go ahead unless you change your mind to go with us." Very
funny Mom, like that would happen I thought. Yep Thomas knows all about
me.
"Yeah Mom like I'm really thinking about going shopping at girl's
stores," Thomas replied on his way out the door.
When breakfast was over and the three of us cleaned up the dishes and
table we got ready to go out. So, I was now expected to help with the
dishes? What a mess this has started out to be.
We went out to the car and Elizabeth jumped in the front seat.
"Mom," said Elizabeth, "does Jimmy need a purse? Cause if so he could
have this one and I could get a new one."
"Honey, please call Jimmy, Jennifer for now. It doesn't sound good
using boy pronouns or names when speaking about such things as purses
and lingerie," Mom said.
"Jennifer, Jennifer, my sister Jennifer. I like that name, Mom. Good
job" said Elizabeth as she turned to me in the back seat and smiled.
"You make a perfect Jennifer."
I just stuck out my tongue as she turned away.
First stop was Missy's. A young girl's specialty store carrying
clothing shoes and lingerie for young teen girls and almost teen girls.
A sales lady in her early twenties came to ask us if we needed any help.
Mom told her that we were shopping for her young daughter and we would
like to look around first.
I followed Mom and Liz around the store. They were touching everything
and talking about colors and sizes. Saying things like isn't this
darling and this is so cute and oh I love that color. Gag me.
When Mom saw a rack of short shorts she picked out a pair and said
hmmmm. Please Mom I thought those are way too short. Keep walking,
keep walking. Instead she motioned to Liz asking her, "Do you like
these? For Jennifer I mean."
"Oh, I sure do, they are heaven really cute, I love yellow," Elizabeth
said sealing the deal that I was going to get a pair of short shorts.
?Look at the little rope tie in the front.?
?Great,? Mom agreed. She then held the shorts up against me to check
the fit. ?They look like they fit but you better try them on. Let?s
get more things then we can go into the dressing room.?
The dressing room? Seriously, I thought to myself. Maybe if I begged
her and promised I would never ever wear girl?s clothes, ever again, I
mean like never. But Mom had moved on to another rack of dresses in my
size. I numbly followed along.
While she looked at the dresses she handed me the yellow short shorts to
carry around the store.
?Oh Mom yes, you have to get him, I mean her, this dress.? Liz was so
happy here. ?I love it.? She chose a different dress on the same rack.
?You know Mom, Jennifer is about my size. I think we could wear the
same clothes.?
?What about that Jennifer?? Mom asked me way too loudly. ?When you wore
Elizabeth?s clothes were they a good fit??
I didn?t think that was a serious question. I figured she didn?t really
expect me to answer. One look at her and I knew I had been incorrect.
So I answered.
?I guess Mom. They fit fine.?
?Well, let?s get close to your size, Liz, then we can have Jenny try
them on,? Mom stated.
Jenny? Now I?m Jenny? Jennifer, Jenny, Jen, J-girl, Jen-Jim? My life
was over.
We shopped for another 45 minutes. When Mom found the sales lady with a
handful of clothes. My hands were full, Elizabeth?s hands were full and
Mom?s hands were full. Mom told her we needed a fitting room.
I didn?t tell you about the other clothes we had in our hands. Let?s
just say we had skirts, tops, undies, I mean all kinds of undies.
Speaking of undies why do girls need so many different types of panties.
I was soon to learn. There were also bras. Sorry, I can?t say bras too
loudly. It?s embarrassing. And all for me.
?Mom, the fitting rooms are for girls, I can?t go in there.? I said.
Hopefully she would come to her senses and say oh you?re right. But she
didn?t.
?Nonsense,? Mom said one word and then she and I went into the fitting
room.
?Undress down to your underwear,? Mom insisted.
I tried on everything. If something didn?t fit Mom would call Liz to go
find a bigger size or a smaller size of the same article. It took
forever. I even had to try on all the bras. I was thinking during my
time in the fitting room, that if Mom bought all these clothes I was
going to be wearing them for a longer time than I had hoped.
Mom was finally satisfied and we went to the register. Holy cow the
price of everything was way too much. Mom paid with the credit card
never batting an eye. Not even raising that eyebrow.
?Alright girls let?s take all these clothes to the car and come back in
to the food court for lunch,? Mom said, not even looking tired. ?Then
let?s go to Pennys. We still need some shoes and accessories for
Jennifer.?
Hey Mom I thought, Jenny has enough things for the day.
On the way back in Elizabeth had a wonderful idea. ?Jennifer needs her
ears pierced.?
?No I don?t think she does, Elizabeth,? I said in the third person.
?Hmmm, I think you?re right Liz. Is there a store that does ears here
in the mall?? Mom asked.
?Oh yes right by the food court,? stated Liz. ?It?s called ?Lend Me An
Ear?. Actually everyone gets at least two holes per ear, Mom.?
How wonderful. Shall I get sick now or wait until after lunch? Mom
decided we would go to ?Lend Me An Ear? after lunch. That means a
bigger mess when I get sick.
The only eventful thing that happened during lunch was that I spotted
three girls in my class. They waved but didn?t approach our table. I
nodded back. At least they didn?t go to Missy?s when we were in there.
I was embarrassed enough without that. I prayed that they were not
going to shop earrings today.
Fortunately the girls were not in the earring market today.
Unfortunately, I was. Four holes later, and two pair of stud earrings,
a paper on how to care for my piercings, some after care cleanser, two
other pair of dangly earrings, for later, and we were done. Did I
mention the pain made my eyes water?
We were not actually done done. Because we then marched to Pennys.
Shoes. Did I really need all these shoes? I learned about flats,
sandals, heels, wedges and trainers.
Mom bought me two pair of flats, a pair of trainers, and a pair of
sandals and thanks to Elizabeth a pair of wedges to help me get used to
a heel type of shoe. Mom said no to Elizabeth about regular heels. Of
course I tried on every pair while a man assisted me. He even gave me a
pair of nylons to wear for trying on the shoes. I learned they were
called knee highs. Oh goody I now have knee highs. Wait, do I keep
these or return them to the salesman?
I needed socks, but of course I needed socks. Even a pair of socks that
go up over my knees. Have you ever heard of tights? I have now.
How is it I need all this stuff just to teach me a lesson? Just making
me do all this shopping has taught me a lesson.
We were almost headed home when Mom said, ?Oh we forgot a nightie.
Let?s go back to Suzie?s or shall we go to Victoria?s??
Thanks to Liz butting in one more time, guess which store we went to?
Yeah right, Victoria?s.
I got two nighties. Mom called them cami sets. They are a top like a
slip and matching shorts. Oh yes I learned about slips today also.
They were silky sets and very short. One was called Solar Pink and the
other was black. I did think they looked cute. Oh no, I was being
brain washed. Just one day of trying on girl clothes and I was learning
their lingo.
