Fraternity Brother to Sorority Sister Chapter Ten-Beth Visits Her Old

During the fall of Beth's junior there were two events that happen that
made an impact on her and she would end up calling Thomas for guidance.
With Brad out of the way Beth had one more thing that she wanted to take
care of, her major. Beth felt that she was wasting her time in
Psychology. She felt it was time to move to Business. It meant it
would take an additional year of college, but it would be worth it. She
would have a degree that was more marketable, and she would be
financially independent. With this plan in mind she decided to talk to
the person who had always badgered her, at least the old Beth, about her
major; her mother.
Ann had always thought it was a bad idea for her daughter to major in
Psychology. It was a major that set you on a course for, well nothing.
She had wanted Beth to talk to Tom about becoming a Business major.
Beth was surprised when Ann didn't approve and thought she should stay a
Psychology major. "What do you mean you don't want me to change? Asked
Beth. "You have been wanting me to change every day since I declared my
major."
"I have had a change of heart. I think it would be the best if you
graduated with your bachelor's in Psychology and then earned your
Masters. I see you in a different light. You have a gift for helping
people. Look at how much you have helped our family this year."
"To be honest that dream I had about the angel also weighed on me. I
still remember him telling me not to let you change your major." Ann
finished talking and waited for Beth's response.
Beth was going to argue. She realized her mom was right and she also
remembered Thomas telling her to stay a Psychology major. Of course,
Thomas reasoning probably had more to do with her financial misdeeds as
Ken.
After that conversation Beth never thought anymore about changing her
major.

With the issue of her major settled she begin to settle into her life
more and more. She began to be Beth more, and Ken less. There were
days that she wouldn't think of her life as Ken. Then the days became
weeks, then the weeks became months. She thought of herself as young
women who was in college.
When Thomas switched her from Ken to Beth, he gave her all the knowledge
and experience that a woman of 20 years would have acquired. Thomas
knew she would need this knowledge in order to function in society.
It is one thing to have a powerful tool, it is another thing to use it.
It took Beth awhile to be comfortable with using this tool. Living in a
sorority house she was forced to use the tool that Thomas had given her
before she was comfortable, but she did use it.
She discovered many different things about living life as Ken and living
life as Beth, for example clothes. Ken, didn't have too many clothes,
as Beth she didn't have enough clothes. When she was Ken she could put
on a blue shirt and khaki pants several times and always feel that the
outfit would look the same no matter what. However, as Beth her mood,
emotions, cycle, etc. could affect how she felt about the outfit. One
week she could look stunning, and the next week she would think it made
it her look fat.
The other thing that she had learned about clothes and girls, it's a
competition. Girls judge what you are wearing, they remember if you
have worn the same thing before. Beth had fallen into this trap, as both
the judger and judgee.
Clothes also affected the bathroom. As Ken, he thought that girls took
so long in the bathroom because they had to sit to pee. As Beth, she
learned it was more than that. First there were never enough stalls in
the women's rooms. Second some outfits required that you practically
undress before you could pee.
The other thing she learned is that women's clothes were not practical.
They were made for beauty and that made certain activities almost
impossible when wearing them. Shoes was another example of how much
different her life was from Ken's life. When she was Ken she had only
three pairs of shoes. She probably had 20 pairs of shoes in her closet,
and almost all of them were uncomfortable after wearing them for an hour
or two. She now understood why women often go barefoot. Many times, she
found herself carrying her heels.
It was tempting to blame men for designing the shoes and clothes that
women wore. But Beth was surprised to learn that most women's shoes and
clothes were actually designed by women! At first, she thought maybe
the women who designed these clothes and shoes were masochist/sadist
because they enjoyed the pain they inflected on themselves and others.
Another thing that she learned was it was worth the pain. Her heels
would hurt eventually, but before they did she looked great. And yes
many of her outfits were not practical but she enjoyed how they made her
look beautiful, hot, and sexy.
Beth knew about all of the latest fashions because the tv in the house
was usually tuned to the E network and every girl had about 20 fashion
apps on her phone. As Ken almost of his apps were sports related and
95% of his tv viewing was sports.
While fashions were one part of being a girl, there were some not so fun
things she had to take into account of being a girl. Ken could walk
anywhere he wanted and not worry about anything. He would often walk
around campus into the wee hours of the morning. Beth rarely went
walking on campus once it was dark, and she never walked alone.
She knew she was vulnerable to attacks. Her sorority house was a
constant reminder of how vulnerable women can be. In the sorority's
chapter room there was a stained glass memorial to two of the members
who were assaulted and murdered in the house during the 70s.
Yes, there were many other downsides to being a girl, weight, limiting
food intake, more body maintenance. But there were many upsides. Among
them were the relationships with other women.
Ken saw all women as potential romantic interest. He never took the
effort to develop relationships with women as friends. If he had taken
the time maybe some of those relationships with women could have evolved
into something more.
The first female friends that Ken had ever had occurred when he became
Beth. Beth would spend hours talking with her sorority sisters, other
girls in her classes and at work, and she talked more with her mom and
sister that she ever talked with Ken's mom and siblings.
Beth would have conversations that covered everything. She discovered
many times conversations were a way to validate, unload, to bond, and
rarely were conversations about solving problems. Nothing was off
limits, problems with professor, parents, boys, frustrations with
weight, mean things that had been said, boys who were jerks, boys who
were hunks, birth control, food, religion, you name it.
The friends that Beth had far exceed the number of friends that Ken ever
had. She never ate alone, went to Starbucks or a movie by herself-unless
she wanted to, and that was rare. Whenever she went shopping plenty of
friends tagged alone to give advice. And if she wanted to go out and
have fun, there were plenty of girlfriends to accompany her and make the
night more fun and memorable. She also learned about the concept of
safety in numbers and watching each other's back.
Of all the new girlfriends she had, no one was closer to her than Leigh.
If anyone would notice changes in Beth it would have been Leigh. Leigh
was old Beth and new Beth's roommate for a little over two years. Every
now and then Beth would do something that was different from the way old
Beth did them. Leigh would sometimes comment lately you have acted like
a different person.
Most of the changes that Leigh noticed in Beth she attributed to growth
and maturity. And in a weird way new Beth inspired Leigh to grow and
make changes her life. As time went on their friendship deepen. Of all
the Chi O sisters Beth felt closest to Leigh and vice versa.
Thomas had given new Beth all of the memories of old Beth, and those
memories include growing up with a sister. Those memories help
tremendously, especially with new Beth deepening her relationship with
her sister Cheryl.
Her relationship with Leigh was even better than the memories. She got
to experience life living as a sister. She and Leigh had indeed become
more than sorority sisters, they had become true sisters.
Since Beth lived locally she would often invite Leigh to her house for
the weekend so that she could get a break from campus life. Leigh became
so comfortable with the Campbells that were there weekends when she went
to Beth's parents' house without Beth!
Leigh returned the favor she would often bring Beth to her family's home
in South Florida on spring break, summer break and other long breaks.
It was on one of those breaks that Beth realized something important.
Leigh's dad had taken the girls, along with the rest of Leigh's family
out on the family's boat. As they cruised many of the canals of South
Florida Beth thought about the past year and all that had happened. She
was no longer lonely, she was on a good academic track, her faith was
strong, she had a good family.
The most surprising thing to Beth was that she enjoyed being a girl. She
enjoyed all the things that make a girl a girl. She didn't miss any
other things from her old life as Ken. She went into this life as Beth
reluctantly. A year later if Thomas had offered her the chance to go
back to being a guy she would say no thanks.
Leigh looked at her friend deep in thought. She asked Beth what she was
thinking about. Beth smiled and said, "I have never been happier than I
have been in the last year. And you have been a big part of my
happiness."
With that Beth and Leigh hugged and held each other's hand for the rest
of the boat ride.
