As such, she had been mostly absent from her daugther's life, while you were there for all the important parts. When she had first walked, you had a ringside seat while your wife could only watch the recording. When she had first learnt to write her name, she beamed with joy as she told you. She had waited as long as she could to ler her mom know, but she was well asleep by the time Maggie came home from a long day at work. When her volley-ball team had made it to the regional finals, she had pestered her mom so vehemently to get her to come watch the game. After hearing the story, your wife had tried to make more room for her family in her life, but it was too late. Your daugther would only come to you now when she was worried, while her mother was now simply a woman who shared her house. Even worse, she had started to call her mother 'Margaret' in front of you both, much to your wife's ire. She would show overt signs of affection for you, huggin you and kissing you on the cheek at breakfast, while barely deigning to adress her mother. You had tried to play mediator between them, to no avail. Even worse, this situation had driven a wedge between you and her and even though she was graceful enough not to say it directly, you could see it in her eyes : she blamed you for it. And that resentment slowly drove you two apart. You still talked to eachother, you still had affection for one another and you did occasionally sleep together, but as the years went by you felt that bond between you grow weaker and weaker still. You didn't know when and how, but you were certain : it would break.
_No, it already has, _you think to yourself. Then why were you both still maintaining this charade? Was it routine? Inertia? The fear of the unknown?
