Great Shift: School Daze

Stevie laughed along with the rest of his class, as Davie tossed
another pencil at the ceiling, sticking it in by the point. So far, 4 pencils
dangled that way, leaving most of the class wondering how many more
Davie could get in. Stevie stopped laughing, then sat forward, as Ms Foster,
their teacher came into the room. Davie was in trouble now, he was sure.
Ms Foster sighed patiently, "All right class" She said, obviously
trying to ignore the pencils hanging over Davie's innocent looking face,
"Lets start for today. Can anyone remind the rest of the class what we were
talking about yesterday?"
Yawning, Stevie wished class were already over instead of just
starting. Or that something interesting would happen. But, in spite of his
desires, he was stuck in his 3rd grade class. Looking at Ms. Foster, and
pretending to pay attention, he told himself that at least they had a pretty
teacher.
Ms. Foster wasn't old like all those other teachers. Well, at least not
too old, for a teacher that is. Stevie, like several other boys in the class had a
bit of a crush on Ms. Foster, though he sure wouldn't consider ever
admitting it. That would be way too embarrassing.
When Ms. Foster started talking about adding large numbers, Stevie
turned to look over at Davie again, who was obviously up to something.
Curiously, he wondered what it would be this time. He didn't have to wait
long, seeing the other boy bend forward, trying not to be seen. After a
minute, a loud "Brrrrrrrrt" sound went out, and everyone turned to look at
Davie, laughing.
Shaking her head, Ms. Foster hurried over to Davie, taking the
whoopie cushion away from him, telling him that he might be able to have it
back after class, and that such things weren't appropriate in school. Stevie
tried hiding a smile, thinking how great that was. At least it wasn't
completely boring today.
Still smiling from the bit of fun, Stevie looked over at Carla who was
chewing a little on the end of her braid, trying to look disgusted at what
Davie had done. Stevie didn't like her. She was a teachers pet, and was
always tattling on everyone if she could. And she was always acting so
bossy, which is what really annoyed him. When she turned to look back at
him, Stevie turned his head, pretending that he hadn't been looking at all.
When Ms. Foster started talking again, Stevie tried listening, but kept
peaking out the window, thinking how nice it was outside, and how boring
it was inside. Just then, a strange feeling hit Stevie. He felt really dizzy,
and tried to stand up, but fell over, lost consciousness.
Stevie woke up, feeling really funny. At first he was really scared
that everyone had seen him faint, and everyone knew that only girls were
supposed to faint. Opening his eyes, he sat up, seeing that everyone else in
the room was staring at each other, or touching themselves. A bunch of the
other kids were crying, and some were screaming.
Stevie was so startled by all of this, that it took him a little bit to
realize, that he wasn't in his seat. He was at the front of the classroom
instead. As he stood up, he realized that something had happened.
Something very weird.
He saw that he was wearing some kind of red shirt, and that his chest
stuck way out. Standing the rest of the way up, he stared down at his body.
He couldn't believe how tall he was. All the other kids in the classroom were
so small compared to him now. And he felt really, really weird. He turned
his head, looking for Ms. Foster, hoping that she knew what was going on,
but he didn't see her anywhere.
Then one of the kids, Darren, grabbed his elbow, tears pouring out of
his eyes. "Ms. Foster" Darren cried to Stevie, "What's happening?" Stevie
turned around real quick, looking behind him to see if Ms. Foster was there,
but she wasn't.
Then it dawned on him. He looked down at himself again, mouth
open in shock, realizing suddenly that he was Ms. Foster. He was wearing
the same clothes that she had been, and even had those two bumps pushing
out of his chest that she did. Curiously, he grabbed one of them, then pulled
his hand back quickly when he felt that it was a part of him.
Davie came running up to him, yelling "Who are you?" Stevie
stepped back, afraid that Davie would beat him up again, then stopped,
smiling. He chuckled to himself, realizing that he was a lot bigger than
Davie now. "Give me back my body" Davie screamed.
Stevie froze. His body? Horrified, Stevie realized that this must be
Ms. Foster. But if that was Ms Foster, then who was Davie? Stevie looked
at his own desk, seeing his own body sitting there, crying into its hands,
making Stevie feel very odd. Scared. Staring at everyone in the classroom,
Stevie realized that somehow, whatever had happened, had happened to
everyone in class.
"Everyone, Pleas be quiet" Stevie called out, and all the students shut
up, responding to the voice of their teacher, even though she wasn't the one
using it. Stevie felt really odd hearing Ms.. Fosters voice coming out of his
mouth. Realizing that everyone was looking at him, even Ms. Foster in
Davies body, Stevie continued, feeling embarrassed "Um," he stumbled a
little, "Since everyone's changed, maybe we should tell each other who we
really are." He felt stupid suggesting that, but everyone else nodded
agreement, wiping tears and trying to distract themselves a little.
Then Davie, or actually Ms. Foster, stood on a desk, announcing, "I
am Ms. Foster" and sounding scared. All the kids in the room stared,
mouths open, just realizing for the first time that their teacher might have
been changed as well. When everyone started talking again, Ms. Foster
yelled out, "Quiet Please" in Davies voice, which still had the effect of
making everyone listen to her. "Whatever has caused this must be
temporary" At least she prayed it was, dreading the idea of having to go
through life as a little boy.
"Everyone, please be calm" she said again, trying to assert her
authority as the teacher. Needing some guidance and comfort, the students
listened to her, even though she certainly didn't sound or look as
authoritative as usual. "Um" She looked at Stevie a little confused, making
him feel really embarrassed, standing there in her body, and being larger
than she was because of it, "Whoever is in my body" She said, gesturing at
Stevie "is right. We should identify ourselves. Lets start with you" and she
pointed at Stevie again. When he told the class who he was, everyone
seemed surprised.
One by one, the other students started giving their names. Sammy
Bowman had ended up in Carla's body, which obviously disgusted him.
Clara had ended up in Tony, the class fat kid's. As the names went on, it
became clear that not everyone in there was from that class. There were a
first grader, a second grader, and two sixth graders in the class, with several
of the usual class members gone.
Realizing what this meant, Ms. Foster told everyone to remain where
they were, and she went out the door. Several minutes later, she walked
back in, looking very pale. "All right everyone" she yelled out again, "It
looks like this happened to everyone in the school"
"Not everyone" a voice in back piped up, and everyone looked at
Todd, who was the only kid in the class who hadn't changed for some
reason. Smugly, he looked around at the others, obviously feeling very
relieved that he was the exception. Stevie envied him, wishing that he were
still himself.
As everyone was digesting the fact that not only their class was
effected a voice came over the intercom, sounding like a little girl. "This is
Mr. Atkins, your principal" Half the classroom laughed, the other half was
too shocked already to feel much more. "We have just received
announcements that whatever this is, has happened all over the world" The
whole class started muttering, and Stevie felt a sinking feeling in his gut,
knowing that this couldn't be good.
"Almost everyone has changed bodies. Students and faculty, I know
this is difficult, but please remain calm. Everyone come to the gym for an
emergency assembly. We'll give you more information there"
As Stevie walked into the hallway, seeing all the students walking
towards the gym, he realized again, how huge he was compared to all his
friends. Especially when his own body, not occupied by a second grade girl
walked past him, apparently not realizing that he was the rightful occupant.
Ms. Foster kept close to Stevie, wanting to keep an eye on her own body,
and make sure that Stevie didn't do anything inappropriate. Stevie had
mixed feelings about it. On one hand, he felt greatly embarrassed to have
Ms. Foster constantly there, but on the other hand, it gave him a bit of
comfort.
He felt really weird and tried to ignore the weight on his chest, and
all the extra hair that kept getting into his eyes while he was walking. When
he got to the gym, He sat with the other students, getting a him a few odd
looks from some others, but he noticed that a couple other teachers were in
the bleachers as well. Or at least those teachers bodies. All the teachers were
going to the front to get together. Stevie noticed that most of them had
changed into kids themselves, though not all of them.
After a few minutes, a little girl came in front of everyone,
microphone in hand. This must be Mr. Atkins, Stevie realized, finding it
rather amusing to see his schools principal, now reduced to what seemed to
be a fourth of fifth grader.
"Thank you for trying to remain calm" Mr. Atkins said, earning him
some giggles when the students heard his voice. Ignoring the jeering, he
continued, trying to maintain his dignity. "We have had reports that this has
effected everyone around the world" He paused. "Well not everyone. A
few people weren't't changed for some reason" He waited for the talking to
die down again. "They don't seem to know what caused this yet, but I'm
sure that they' will find a solution. For now, we are going to get he busses
running, and try getting everyone home. I know that this is very difficult for
many of you, myself included, but we have to stay calm until we find out
what's going on. The busses will be here any time now"
Stevie felt very cramped on the bus ride back home, as if the seats
were way to small, giving him no room. He tried to ignore the teasing of a
couple of the students, who hadn't gone through quite so drastic a change,
but by the time he got off the bus, he was near tears. Wiping his eyes, he
noticed smudges of makeup on his sleeve, and only felt worse because of it.
Stevie hesitated at his door, wondering what would be inside. What
had happened to his family? Who were they now? Gathering his courage,
Stevie went in, ready to face what he knew would be different.
A month after the Shift, Stevie sat in his classroom, now the biggest
kid in the class. This as uncomfortable for him, since a new desk had to be
brought in for him so that he could fit in it, and he really stood out. He felt
so embarrassed being a girl, especially since the week before when he'd
started bleeding, and his Mom had to explain to him about menstruation.
Stevie felt disgusted, especially more so, knowing that he'd have to put up
with that for the rest of his life.
What's more, he was old now. He tried not think about that, and
instead think about the good things, like being really big, and being able to
go into movies and such. But still, he didn't like this. It was way too weird,
but he was adjusting.
Ms. Foster was still teaching the class, apparently resigned to being
stuck looking like one of her students, and often being mistaken for one of
them.
Stevie had to smirk a little at Davie, and tried to avoid looking at him.
Or actually her now. Davie had been put into a kindergartner's body, and
was now a little girl, and the smallest one in the class. He didn't seem to
want to joke around very much anymore, and instead just tried to avoid
notice. Stevie didn't blame him, especially with those cute pig tails and
dresses that Davie's Mom kept making him wear to school.
Staring out the window, Stevie still felt bored with the class, trying
to think of other things he could be doing instead. Smiling, he remembered
that he was now about the same age as his Mom, who had turned into one of
her co-worker's, but was still a woman, and about the same age she had
been. Stevie's Dad on the other hand, had turned into a pregnant teenage
girl, which made Stevie older than his own Dad. At least his Dad was going
through many of the same problems he was, with him.
Sighing, Stevie forced himself to look back at the front of the class,
trying to keep himself from wishing something interesting would happen.
After all, look what had happened another time he'd wished that.
