"For the first time in a week, we have absolutely no chance of rain today." Anya
turned off her car radio as she turned into the Bikini Beach parking lot. She
saw Norma working on something at the gate, as she pulled into the employee lot.
Norma had just finished hanging the sign when Anya reached the gate. "Closed for
Private Party."
"'Private'," Anya said. "I've never heard of such a thing."
Norma fidgeted a little. "The orders came from the Boss herself. She said she
just got word."
"Do you know who's throwing the party?"
"No - and yes. That is, I don't think I know who's throwing it, but I must. I'm
invited. Belinda, Marta, Holly, and Vicky, too. The invitations came here to the
Park. The Boss called to tell us."
"But you don't know who --"
"No idea." She shrugged. "Well, I'd better get back inside. Just because I'm
invited doesn't mean I get out of helping set things up." She walked back inside
the Park.
Anya went into the Locker Room to change. She worked the combination on her
locker and opened the door to put her purse on the shelf. There was a lilac-
colored envelope waiting there with her name on it in gold letters. She put the
purse down, took out the envelope, and opened it. There was a card inside.
"Anya: Don't be so suspicious. There's a good reason for the Party, and
you're invited, too. So put on your suit and have a good time."
There was no signature on the card, and she didn't recognize the handwriting.
Anya switched into her suit, a new golden tankini that clung to her figure and
enhanced her fair complexion and brunette hair. More curious than ever, she
headed for her Grandmother's office.
The old woman was sitting at her desk working on some papers. For a change, she
was in a bathing suit, rather than the dress she normally wore. "Good morning,
dear. I see you were invited, too."
"Grandmother, who... who's throwing this party. It must be somebody important to
close the Park - and to get you into a suit."
"Don't be so smart. I've always loved the water. That's why I opened this
particular kind of a theme park. As to who's throwing - and paying for the
Party, I don't know. The instructions... and a very large payment arrived by a
special channel that only a few people on the Wizards Council and one or two
others know about. I don't think that it's any of them."
"Could it be a trap of some sort?"
"Dear, I don't have that kind of enemies." Her face darkened as if she were
remembering something, but it cleared in a moment. Besides, as my good friend,
Mike Callahan says, "What army ever suffered because of the arrival of
reinforcements?"
"Who all _is_ invited?"
"I don't know everybody. You and me, Liz, Jenny, and those five girls on the
staff - the ones who tried to break in that night - our invitations came with
the instructions. There's probably a fair number more considering the amount of
food and such that were paid for. I'm trying to get some work done before I go.
Why don't you go out to the gate and see who shows up."
Anya nodded and headed back to the Gate. Vicky was just finishing talking to a
couple of women, beach members who hadn't been invited. "I am sorry," she said,
"but the rules do allow the Park to be closed for special events. Please come
back tomorrow."
One of the women, a statuesque blonde, frowned. "Will the park be opened
tomorrow - to regular members, I mean."
"As far as I know." Vicky reached beneath the counter. "The person throwing the
Party - and, no I don't know who it is - extends their regrets. Everyone who
gets turned away today gets a chit good for a free drink here at the Park." She
handed the two women small tickets.
The other woman, a tall, athletic-looking redhead, looked at the ticket. "Good
for one drink of any sort at Bikini Beach. Enjoy one and make a toast to his
good health." She looked puzzled. "'His'? Who is he?"
Vicky shrugged. "Maybe he's the one throwing the party. I don't know." She
paused. "Well, see you tomorrow, I guess."
"We'll be here." The pair walked away.
A car pulled up near the gate, and a man came out. "Jimmy, Nichole, we're here."
A boy and girl, aged about six and nine, climbed out of the back seat. An
attractive woman, who looked like an adult version of the young girl, got out of
the front and walked to the gate. The children ran after their mother, while
their father got a bag with several swimsuits out of the trunk.
"I'm sorry," Anya said. "I'm afraid we're closed." She recognized them as
infrequent users of the Park, always buying one-days passes for all, including
the husband and son.
The woman held up an envelope like the one Anya had gotten. The name "The Harwin
Family" was written on the side. "Yes, I know. There's some sort of party, but
we're invited, too."
"Good thing, too," the husband said coming up beside her. "Those passes are
expensive. Okay, kids, let's go in. Last one changed is a monkey's uncle." He
herded the group through the gate, and then he and his son were off to the Men's
Locker Room.
Anya smiled, the Harwins were one family that had grown closer because of the
Park. She relieved Vicky and told her to go enjoy the party. Then she sat back
to see who else had been invited. A silver Rolls limo drove up about ten minutes
later, and Ronni Harris got out. Anya braced for trouble. Ronni was probably the
Park's richest member, a developer with all sorts of financial and political
influence. If she wanted to get into the Park, it would probably take magic to
stop her.
Ronni smiled at the look on Anya's face. "Relax, dear. I got an invitation, too.
I hadn't planned to come, but my curiosity got the better of me. Especially when
I phoned the Park and your Grandmother didn't know anything about it either."
She smiled and headed in. "I always did love a good mystery."
More people arrived during the course of the next hour. A few were regular
customers or newcomers who hadn't been invited. Anya turned them away as gently
as possible, always offering one of the drink chits. That seemed to satisfy most
of them.
One tall, well-dressed Black man demanded to see the manager. Anya identified
herself and sold the man a weeklong pass at a larger discount than usual. She
gave him an extra chit, as well. She knew that her Grandmother had been hoping
to get Deke Freeman to come to her Park for some time. Now that one of the
city's leading loansharks was showing interest, she had no intention of
discouraging him.
A number of people with invitations arrived as well. Anya found that she knew
all of them. Jeri Reynold's boyfriend, Matt, let her off at the gate. He kissed
her and promised to pick her up at six. Don Whitney and his fianc?e, Leslie,
walked in arm in arm - well, they normally came on Saturdays anyway. That was
the day; Don's pass was good for.
Neon drove up and a trio of attractive women climbed out. It was like a mini-UN
or a sexy "Diversity" poster. Deke Freeman was just driving off, but he stopped
to look at the lusciously curved Black woman who was driving. A tall Hispanic
woman leaped out of the back seat with an almost catlike grace, then turned to
help a tiny Oriental doll of a woman out of the car. The Hispanic woman flashed
three envelopes as they walked past. Anya noticed that she was wearing an
engagement ring. She also noticed that both the Black and the Oriental girls
were wearing first term maternity blouses.
A blood-red Porsche with the license plate "BAD BABE" pulled up near the
entrance. Anya recognized the woman who drove, Allison Jenkins, the star of
dozen or more porn movies. She was wearing a bikini that was barely covering her
"talents" and four-inch spiked heels. "Is the - the old woman here?" she asked
timidly. "I'd like to speak to her - maybe to apologize."
Anya knew this story. "She's here, Alan." The actress looked startled at the
sound of her former name. "But I don't know that it'll do any good."
"It's worth a try. That's why I came when I got the invitation." She smiled
hopefully and sauntered into the Park, hips swinging invitingly.
"Hey, Anya."
Anya turned at the sound of her name. Officer Jana Archer was in her police
uniform. "I go on shift at four, but I couldn't resist a party."
"How are you doing in your new life?"
"Great. Just great. My sergeant can't believe how streetwise I am for a rookie.
He's even been talking about my trying for detective."
"That's wonderful."
"Yeah, when I was a guy, it took me five years to make detective. Now, I may do
in less that one."
"You deserve it. How's Pete?"
"Terrific." She held up her hand to show a small silver ring. "We're engaged."
"Oh, I'm so happy for you."
"Have - have you found anybody yet? I know that I'm - I was a hard man to
replace."
"Well, there is somebody --"
"Anybody I now?"
Anya turned again. It was Greg standing there, a lilac envelop in his hand. He
kissed Anya on the cheek. "As if I needed an excuse to come and see you." Then
he turned and offered a hand to Jana. "Hi, I'm Greg Lawson. I'm a, umm, friend
of Anya's."
"I can see that." Jana smiled. "I'm Jana. Nice to meet you, Greg." She began to
walk away, then turned back. "Anya, I'll see you inside, I hope. For now, I
leave you in Greg's hands." She giggled and sauntered off.
"If you're working, I'd better let you get back to it." He kissed her again,
something they both enjoyed. "I'll see you later, too, I hope."
"Count on it." Anya smiled and watched him head for the Locker Room.
About noon, Rita Sandowski came out to the gate. She was wearing a maternity
bathing suit under her staff T-shirt, though she hadn't begun to show yet. "I'm
not invited, so the Boss says I get to take over at the gate."
Just as Anya turned to leave, a man and woman came to the gate, an amazed look
in their eyes. Anya didn't recognize them, but they both had invitations. The
man was tall with a bushy mustache; the woman was attractive in a "renaissance"
sort of way. The man wore a light sweater and looked rather pale, as if he
wasn't very well.
Shaking their heads in disbelief, they walked past Anya and Rita and into the
Park. Anya saw them come out of the Locker Rooms a few minutes later. The man
was now a fiery redhead with a stripper's body and seemed to be bursting with
good health. The woman - Grandmother's magic almost never worked on women -
looked very much the same as before, only about thirty pound and ten years
younger. They kissed and walked hand in hand into the park.
Anya sighed and went in to look for Greg/Geri.
The Party was a great success, though nobody ever did figure out who it was for.
At three o'clock, the guests all followed the last instruction in their
invitations and drank a toast to someone's health. The next day, almost two
hundred guests at the Park did the same thing.
Anya saw the couple that she didn't recognize several times during the day. They
were just relaxing and enjoying each other's company. When she tried to find out
who they were, the transformed woman just smiled. "Just a poor, sick writer
somehow getting a day off from what ails him." She leaned over and kissed her
wife. Anya smiled and walked away to leave them in piece.
At the end of the day, Anya got a chance to talk to her Grandmother. "Did you
every figure out who paid for today?"
"No, dear, but a good businessman never turns down an opportunity to make money.
We were paid almost twice what we normally take in on a Saturday, and with a
crowd as small as we had today, the costs were less, too."
"I think that it had something to do with that couple that I didn't recognize.
Do you know them?"
"Somehow, I think that I do, but I don't know how or why or from when. Well, no
matter. They seemed harmless enough."
"They certainly enjoyed the Park."
"And each other, dear, which is more important. And - somehow, I think the Park
is better for it, too."
