Tales of The Great Switch: Imprisoned!

You can't let emotions get in the way when you are in law
enforcement.
Warden Jennifer Reagan got out of her car. She had been
warden for this prison for seven years but today felt like
her first day on the job all over again. Under the new
security measures enforced by local authorities, she had
just undergone a three hour interview with the local police
in order to get identification that matched her new body.
She had barely had a moment since the so-called Great
Switch to adjust to occupying her boyfriend's body. She had
responsibilities to handle and refused to let her new body
and gender get in the way.
After discovering the worldwide turmoil caused by the
switch, which had exchanged the minds of more than 9/10ths
of the population of the planet, Jennifer immediately
called her office and found the entire prison in emergency
lockdown, thanks to a quick-witted and unswapped guard.
The guard put the lockdown into action after a fellow guard
fainted, and woke up again, claiming to be a violent
prisoner. The woman thought her fellow guard was joking
until the other woman tried to kill her! Her training won
out over the other guard's clumsy attack. Hearing other
guards talking about breaking out of the prison, she'd
sounded the alarms and triggered the lockdown.
It had taken her and two guards who had swapped with each
other four hours to lock up the guards who appeared to have
gone insane, losing their identities and acting like the
prisoners. The fact that the two guards helping her claimed
to be each other made the claims of the prisoners and other
guards more believable. It was only after securing the
prison that the three women were able to take a breather
and learn from a television that the mind swaps were a
worldwide phenomenon.
Jennifer had to undergo the long interview to get new
credentials in order to return to her prison and take
charge. She was the first off-duty personnel to return, and
the new identification was certainly needed to convince the
three women that their five-foot, four-inch female warden
was now a six-foot, three-inch tall man! All the known
bodyswaps in the women's prison had been with other women.
While they understood from the TV news that gender swaps
were very common, the warden was the first example of one
they had seen first hand.
Warden Reagan began the arduous task of correctly
identifying the prisoners and guards and sorting out the
huge mess left in the wake of the Great Shift. No one would
be released until intensive measures insured that the
prisoners were staying imprisoned, no matter whose body
they possessed.
As the investigation proceeded, there were a few instances
of people from the town winding up in some of the
prisoner's bodies, and all points alerts were put out for
the citizen's bodies in case the mindswapped prisoner wound
up in the citizen's body. Orders specified that violent
security measures were on hold until it could be proven
that the escaped mind of the suspect was indeed in the new
body.
No one wanted to hurt a confused innocent!
After a week of intense conversations and interrogations,
twenty seven guards occupying the bodies of prisoners were
released to go home and try to get their forever altered
lives in order. It was unspoken, but the guards that
remained knew that, right or wrong, those guards were not
going to return to duty. No remaining guard could feel safe
working with someone who had been behind bars a week ago,
even if the mind in that body was that of an honest,
hardworking law enforcement official.
Four other women were also released by Warden Reagan. Two
of the guard's bodies were now occupied by a husband and
wife who had been driving by their guard tower when the
switch had occurred. Reagan felt sad for them. It would be
difficult for the young couple to continue their marriage
now that both were females. Perhaps if the man had swapped
with another man it wouldn't matter as much, but the woman
was obviously not attracted to her husband's newly feminine
form. There was nothing Jennifer could do to help them
though.
The guard with the man's body elected to remain and help
out for the duration of the crisis until qualified
replacements could be found to relieve them. Jennifer and
the newly male guard became fast friends and confidants as
they both had male bodies to adjust to, and sharing their
problems as men seemed to help.
Three other women were released when they were identified
as female citizens from a nearby town. One prisoner's body
was occupied by an elderly woman from a nearby nursing
home. The prisoner occupying her elderly body had been
caught trying to escape from the nursing home. The escape
attempt had caused a stroke, and she was in intensive care.
A guard's body was occupied by a homeless woman who had
been living in a box near the prison. Her former body was
still missing, and the guard's mind was also on the missing
list. It appeared likely that the guard was in the homeless
body but no one could be certain until the guard returned.
There were many on the missing person's lists. Some might
never be found, including five more prisoners who refused
to identify themselves, apparently trying to pretend to be
someone else in order to escape custody. Warden Reagan knew
they could only pretend for so long. She could hold them
legally until their original sentences were over if they
refused to cooperate with their identification.
The other woman released upon proper identification,
occupied another prisoner's body. She was identified as
Melanie, a three year old little girl who didn't know her
last name, and for the past week had been struggling to
adapt to a body that was decades older and far bigger than
she was used to.
The girl's mother showed up after nearly a week and claimed
her daughter. The mother had thought that her daughter had
died with her original body as a result of a car crash
caused by a car driven by someone who had swapped into the
driver's body during the Switch and had crashed the car
after fainting.
Not giving up after learning of the mind swaps, the mother
had pursued every possible lead until she heard that there
was a confused little girl in an adult body at the prison
calling herself by the same name as her daughter! Talking
to the girl with the warden's supervision, the mother was
able to identify the girl positively as her presumed dead
daughter!
Jennifer was happy to see a mother and daughter reunited,
even though the reunion was somewhat bittersweet, as the
mother and her little daughter were now about the same age
physically. At least they were together again, Jennifer
thought. She and her boyfriend had agreed to take some time
apart while they began the adjustment to their new bodies
and genders.
Jennifer found some joy in watching Melanie leave with her
mother. She smiled when the little girl smiled at her and
waved goodbye before entering her mother's car.

Warden Jennifer Reagan had absolutely no way of knowing
that the three-year-old girl leaving the prison in the car
was actually a fifty four-year-old woman serving a life
sentence for killing three men and stealing all their money
from their relatives with a bogus will scam.
The mother was confused by her little girl's laughter on
the way home... The poor thing must be in shock from her
new body and her horrible stay in that prison!
Two days later, her daughter ran away in the middle of the
night. She discovered her checking account emptied, her
jewelry stolen, and her credit cards gone, along with all
the money in her purse. The woman couldn't handle the loss
of her daughter again. She broke down and had to be
institutionalized.
Eight years later, "Melanie" wound up back in prison again
and Jennifer had to struggle to treat the woman in the
manner the law proscribed. She wanted to kill the woman.
She had been fooled by the woman, Melanie's mother was a
basket case, and four more men were added to her list of
murdered victims before the police finally tracked down the
"Black Widow", as "Melanie" had been labeled by the press
during her trial.

There were many tragedies after the Great Switch.
This story just reports one of them...
