MEDALLION OF ZULO: One of a set of an estimated fifty transformative devices
created for self-defense by the M'barduu tribe of Central Africa in the
ninth century.
The expanding Islamic empire of Timbuktu began to encroach on M'barduu
territories circa 870. The tribe was recovering from a generation-long war,
and its warrior class was decimated. A tribal shaman whose name has been
lost created the Medallions, which were dedicated to the tribal trickster
god, Zulo.
By means of the devices, the entire adult population, as well as the oldest
of the children, of the tribe were able to transform into doppelgangers of
their strongest warrior. The medallions were also able to heal all but the
deadliest of wounds. The sight of a seemingly invulnerable army of
identical warriors terrified the invading forces. For a historical account
from the invaders viewpoint, read chapter 9 of the Mattson translation of
al-Jabbara's twelfth century _Annals of the Ab'dulla Dynasty of
Dar-al-Timbhuk_.
A generation later, the M'barduu began its own expansion using the
Medallions to swell their forces. The Medallion was also used as a
psychological weapon. Captured warriors were returned transformed into
females and, often, pregnant. Other tribes surrendered, rather than undergo
such a fate, although tribal leaders were sometimes transformed as a
warning.
In some way, the aggressive actions of the tribe became offensive to Zulo,
who withdrew his blessing from the Medallions. They ceased to function, and
all those transformed returned to their original bodies. (Those subject to
the restrictions of the Medallion, menstruation and pregnancy, did not
transform.)
Most of the leaders of the M'barduu were the original warriors of a
generation before, who had used the Medallion to remain young. Without the
Medallions' magic, they all died of extreme old age within days. The tribe
was defeated, and its lands and treasures distributed among their former
victims. Tribal members were sold into slavery. The Medallions were not
recognized as magical and were scattered among the victors.
The grandson of one of the leaders was sold to a scholar in Timbuktu. He
converted to Islam and took the name Harun. Harun bought his way to freedom
and became a merchant. Years later, Harun wrote a memoir of his life for
the instruction of his descendents. In it, he told the story of the
Medallions as a warning of the corrupting nature of pagan magic. A copy of
Harun's _Life of A Believer_ exists in the Bodlean Library at Cambridge.
Description
The Medallion is a round disk of Denschall bronze (rough copper alloy with
sub-optimal zinc and trace lead) 11 cm in diameter, 0.8 cm in thickness. It
is bears the image of Zulo in his avatar of the young (winged) trickster on
the front and is blank on the reverse. It is linked to a chain of 1-2 cm
links approximately .7 m long.
There were fifty Medallions originally. They were scattered when the tribe
was taken into slavery. Stories of such an item are found in the folklore
of Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. There are at least five stories
of the destruction of a Medallion, often resulting in an explosion of
tremendous force. Most stories of Medallions in recent years are set in
Western Europe or North America, particularly Britain and the United States.
Powers of the Medallions
If a person puts the chain around his neck and touches an article of
clothing to a Medallion, he will transform into a duplicate of the last
person to wear that clothing as he or she was at the time the article of
clothing was worn. If the clothing had never been worn, the person will
transform into someone who could wear such an article of clothing.
Partial transformations are possible. For example, a slender person who put
on the clothing of a heavier person would gain the weight necessary to wear
the garments. By this means, gender transformations, rejuvenation or aging,
and rapid healing are all possible. The latter is accomplished by having
the injured person done a garment worn before the injury occurred. There is
some evidence that Rasputin had one of the Medallions and used it to heal
himself after several assassination attempts.
If two persons grasp the Medallion at the same time, they will transform
into each other. This power has made the Medallions highly valued for
espionage purposes through the ages. It is believed that Napoleon used this
power to trade bodies with one of his officers and so escape his first exile
to St. Helena.
The Medallions also confers the skills and even the personality of the
original wearer of the garment if it is held after the physical
transformation is completed. This occurred because many of the tribal
members transforming were not warriors. The skills and aggressive nature of
a warrior was needed as well as his physical form.
Restrictions
Zulo was a trickster god. Like most tricksters, he would no allow permanent
harm to result from his magic. Because the transformation causes some
psychic trauma to the body, the Medallion will not cause a second
transformation of any sort within twelve hours of an initial transformation.
Nor will it transform a pregnant woman, since this would injure, if not
kill, the fetus.
One avatar of Zulo was a thrall to N'emdula, the female goddess. For this
reason, a menstruating woman cannot be transformed, even to another woman.
Such a transformation would be an overriding of N'emdula's power, and that
is something Zulo cannot do.
Legends of the Medallions
Zulo was seen as a god of Fate, sometimes a god of unexpected justice. Many
of the tales of the Medallion involve a sort of due justice received by the
person or persons transformed.
The Brotherhood of Zulo
This is an obscure cult dedicated to the continued existence of the
Medallion. Cultists claim to be descended from the original M'barduu tribe,
although only about one-third are of obvious African descent. The cult
response to this is that their ancestors were transformed racially by the
Medallion.
The cult believes that the aggressive actions of the tribe angered Zulo, who
withdrew his magic and allowed the tribe to be conquered. The cult seeks to
placate Zulo by assisting him in his role as trickster. Reports claim that
the Medallions will not work for or on any cult member. In fact, an attempt
at transformation is part of the ritual by which a prospective member joins
the cult. Membership is granted only to those who cannot be transformed.
The cultists hope to regain the power of the Medallions for some unspecified
end.
Cult members can sense the presence of a Medallion. To placate Zulo and to
gain a Medallion for their own, temporary use, they will use burglary skills
gained by the cult over almost a millennium of practice to steal Medallions
from current holders. That this seals the current holders in whatever form
they may have is seen as furthering Zulo's role as god of unexpected
justice.
The Medallion may be kept, but only for a period of no more than one lunar
month. Whether kept for this time or not, the Medallion will be taken at
least fifty miles from its current location and put back into circulation.
This is most often done by selling the Medallion at an extremely low price
in a bazaar or open market.
