An Altered Fates short story by Caleb Jones
(Inspired by the Oscar winning actress, Hilary Swank.)
Hilary Swank read the headline one more time, still unable to believe last
night's events were true.
"Swank Wins Oscar"

LOS ANGELES (UltimateTV.com) - After months of predictions, controversial
newspaper polls and Hollywood uber-hype, the 72nd Annual Academy Awards have
arrived. But after all is said and done, only one little Golden statue can be
awarded for each category.
So without further ado, "...the Oscar for Best Actress goes to..." Hilary Swank,
for "Boys Don't Cry"!
There were a lot of other winners but she skipped over the rest of the article.
Hilary shivered as she recalled the time a few years ago when she had been an
extra on a forgettable episode of the TV show Beverly Hills 90210. More
importantly, she wasn't Hilary Swank, one of the 90210 regulars back then.
Ironically, considering the role for which she had just won the Oscar and a
Golden Globe, she had been born Jason Wilson, a very male actor who couldn't
even get an agent with a face like the one he had been cursed with from birth.
No, he wasn't ugly. Just normal. Too normal! No casting director would give
him a second look. He looked like someone in a crowd and those were the only
jobs he could get despite studying acting for years.
Then one day he had the good fortune to visit a flea market in a suburb of
Hollywood. A cheap looking medallion caught his eye and he purchased it for a
couple of bucks. It looked ordinary, but the metal seemed to be real gold. It
was a gamble but no worse than buying a lottery ticket or two instead of lunch.
He planned on pawning the medallion and its chain, but after cleaning it a
little he placed it around his neck and let it hang on his chest. It looked
pretty nice. Maybe it would help him get the attention of an agent and finally
get lucky if he wore it on the show.
Finally his scene was set up and he mingled at the bar pretending to have a
conversation with a pretty extra while several of the show's stars had a fight
and stormed out. They finally got it right on the third take. The stars didn't
mingle with the extras any longer than necessary. On the way out to her
trailer, one of the actresses, Hilary Swank, who played the girlfriend of series
star Jason Priestley bumped into the chest of the other Jason on the set, the
extra. A spark of electricity seemed to spark between them. Hilary mumbled an
apology and left. Jason Wilson waited around until the director said no other
shots were needed and the extras could leave a few seconds later.
He was feeling a little ill and went to the men's bathroom. He wanted to go see
a doctor but the studio frowned on extras using services the stars might need.
He wasn't in much pain though his very skin was crawling. He sat in a stall and
waited until his bodily functions settled down. He still felt funny but managed
to get out of the stall. Jason saw one of the actresses in the mirror, the one
who had bumped into him minutes before, and ran out before she could identify
him and get him tossed off the lot for good for being caught in the ladies room.
His pants seemed too tight in the hips and his body still felt strange, but he
managed to wander over to the trailers where the stars relaxed between takes,
hoping to find a quiet spot to relax.
He watched in amazement as someone who looked exactly like himself burst through
the door of one of the trailers. He ran over to Jason and began shaking him.
His 'twin' was much stronger than he felt after that bout of sickness in the
bathroom. His hair flew around his face as he was shaken.
But that was wrong! His hair was cut in a crew cut like the look-alike who was
shaking him, yet now it was thrashing around his face like it had grown down to
his shoulders in length. The strong man began insisting he "wanted his body
back!"
He said "Give me back my body, you thief!" over and over as he shook Jason so
hard the skin on his chest started to shake like Jell-O. It was a totally
strange sensation and Jason looked down to see a pair of small but firm breasts
moving around inside the shirt he was wearing. As he fainted from the double
shock of seeing boobs on his chest and the violent shaking his double was giving
him and them, he saw security guards running up to him. His last thought before
he passed out was that on top of everything else, he was going to loose this job
as well as his health.
When he came to, he was lying on a couch in a trailer and Tiffany Amber-Thiessen
of all people was applying a cold compress to his brow. He thought he was in
heaven. But it was just a trailer on the lot. Tiffany saw him wake up and
smiled a winning smile that cheered him up almost as much as her breasts, which
hung mere inches from his eyes. She was still wearing the low-cut gown from the
bar scene. If he didn't feel so weird, he would have thought he had died and
gone to heaven.
"Are you OK, Hil...?" Tiffany asked.
"I'm fine..." Jason tried to answer but his voice was out of sorts. It was much
too high, almost like a girls voice. He sat up and felt that Jell-O sensation
from his chest again. His hand encountered something he had no trouble
identifying as breasts. Small, but a handful. He hadn't imagined them before
he fainted. "What's going on...?" he asked, and Tiffany told him that a crazed
extra attacked him and was thrown off the set.
The studio doctor came inside and examined Jason. He was shocked when Tiffany
helped him off with his shirt and a thin girlish body was underneath instead of
his own. He really did have breasts! At least that awful medallion was
missing. His close-up view of his new bosoms was unobstructed!
According to Tiffany and the doctor, and the evidence of his own eyes, he was
now a woman. He, in some unknown way had become the actress Hilary Swank who
had bumped into him a while ago instead of his normal male self. It took every
ounce of acting skill he possessed not to give away the fact that he might look
like this Hilary woman but was really a guy named Jason stuck inside her body.
Tiffany helped him get dressed in clothing more suited to the body he now had.
No one knew how he had been dressed in men's clothing but assumed it was part of
the extra's sick plans the guards had foiled. The studio, concerned about a
lawsuit for negligence, had a driver take him home; only it was to the home of
Hilary Swank, the woman he appeared to be. He looked in the purse Tiffany had
handed him after she had helped dress him and found some keys. One key finally
fit and he entered the home of the person he looked like. His body was very
tired and he fell asleep on the couch until being awakened by the ringing of the
phone. He answered it and was stunned to hear his own voice talk to him.
It seemed that Hilary also had undergone a similar transformation... into
Jason's body. He/she told him to wait until he/she arrived. Jason played with
his new breasts until the doorbell rang. Slipping his bosoms back into the bra
Tiffany had insisted he wear, he let his double in after she promised not to
shake him anymore.
They talked awhile but neither could figure out how this strange exchange could
have happened. They came to the conclusion that each would have to live the
life of the body they now occupied until they found a way to reverse the
exchange, if they ever did.
It took some time to adjust to their new bodies. Jason was now five foot seven,
almost six inches shorter than he was used to. He swiftly grew to like wearing
high heels if only because they lifted him to the height he was used to having
in his male body. Saddled with a female body however, Jason considered himself
lucky Hilary's husband Chad Lowe was out of the country working on a film.
After a month though, he was surprised to realize he was looking forward to
Chad's return. He had a healthy female body that desired attention and
affection, and the photos of his new husband were starting to look rather
attractive. The thought of the real thing holding him was starting to have a
very real physical appeal. He dropped his plans to get a quickie divorce after
Chad came home and reunited with his apparent wife, spending the entire weekend
together in bed.
Jason, or Hilary as she had grown accustomed to calling himself as the woman he
now was, jumped at the chance to portray a male in the new film she was offered
even if it was about a girl pretending to be a boy. It would be a welcome break
from all the femininity she was obliged to display as a Hollywood actress. She
cut her long hair and wore only pants for more than a month. Except for the
bathroom and bedroom, she was a boy again to the rest of the world. Everyone on
the set said Hilary was the most convincing boy they had ever seen portrayed by
a girl on film, or in real life. They thought her month of living like a boy
prior to the filming had paid off.
Little did they suspect how much research she really had being a boy! As Jason,
she had a lifetime as a male to draw upon. She had grown up and spent more than
two decades living life as a young man. Her experience really came through on
the screen. She had even convinced several people around the sets and in town
that she was a boy just like the girl who's life she was portraying in the
movie. Within reason, of course. She didn't want to experience the same fate
of Teena Brandon, the real life girl she portrayed in the film.
Her experience really came through on the screen with a fine performance. Still,
it was quite a surprise to be nominated for, and actually win a Golden Globe
award and an Oscar for best actress for her portrayal of Teena Brandon in "Boys
Don't Cry" as a girl living life as a boy.
She walked up the steps in her long gown to accept the latter award, and she
wondered if winning the Oscar was worth becoming a woman and a wife. She looked
out at her husband Chad and the loving look in his eyes. The last she had
heard, the former Hilary was still trying to crack the acting world during the
day with her old male body while paying the bills as a waiter at night.
As she finished her acceptance speech and moved offstage to talk to
"Entertainment Tonight", she knew she would have considered selling her soul to
the devil to win an Oscar as Jason. She had lucked out the day she became
Hilary Swank and she thanked God for giving her a great role and the opportunity
to tell Teena Brandon's story in "Boys Don't Cry". The awards were just a
wonderful bonus to a wonderful new life and a fabulous career.
Jason Wilson congratulated his former body on her success and her Oscar
afterwards. He had to admit the new Hilary had become quite an actress as he
waited on her and Chad at Elton John's After-Oscar bash. She had earned it all
though, and someday he would, too! But first he had to get table eight ready
for Billy Crystal and company.
The magical medallion was auctioned off as a souvenir of the Beverly Hills 90210
show in an auction on E-Bay for $19.50 to someone with the online name of
Jennifer Adams.
