ALTERED FATES: THE DAUGHTER

I woke screaming, lurching upright in bed as that scream subsided into
great, wrenching sobs. It was the sounds again, those terrible cracking
and snapping sounds I couldn't escape.
The bedroom door burst open then Carol was there, taking my tiny body in
her arms, rocking me back and forth, my head on her breasts, gently
stroking my long golden hair.
"There, there, sweetie," she cooed. "Mommy's here now. It was just a bad
dream."
Mommy. I still couldn't get used to calling her that, but I knew I'd have
to.
"Was it the same dream?"
I nodded. It was always the same dream.
"This can't go on," said Carol, "you need professional help."
"A child psychologist won't do any good," I sniffled. "We couldn't tell
him what he'd need to know to be able to help, that I'm not the little
girl I appear to be. Tomorrow may be my fourth birthday, but I'm thirty
years old."
"I hoped that after the funeral, things might improve for you."
They hadn't. The funeral was four months ago. Carol and I been there,
dressed all in black, as the body of Officer Ray Peralta was lowered into
the ground. His fellow cops all offered their condolences, several of
them kneeling down and hugging me, none of them knowing it wasn't their
colleague in that casket but our daughter, Eloise. Carol's face was a
mask of grief, but at least the dark glasses hid her eyes. I had to
pretend a certain level of incomprehension, the small child not really
understanding that her Daddy wouldn't be coming home again.
It was the hardest thing I've had to do in my entire life.
"I wish I'd never found that damned medallion, or recognized it for what
it was."
"Using it is on both of us," said Carol. "I was as intrigued by the idea
of trying sex from the other side of the gender divide as you were."
If you're Californian, earthquakes are a fact of life you just have to
learn to live with. Even so, the one that struck us four and a half
months ago was unexpectedly strong, and its epicentre was only a couple
of miles from our little town. We were in bed asleep when it hit, but I
was awake and racing down the hallway to our daughter's bedroom within
seconds.
I wasn't fast enough.
The roof collapsed as I reached the door to Eloise's room, falling all
around me and swatting me to the floor and, I later learned, knocking
Carol unconscious. Amazingly, I was unharmed and so was Eloise, though
she was pinned to the floor by a fallen beam and obviously frightened by
what had happened.
"Daddy!" she cried, when she saw me.
"It's OK, sweetie, I'll get you out," I said, reaching under the beam to
lift it.
That was when my fingers touched Eloise's flesh and something metallic. I
felt a familiar tingling and knew instantly what it meant.
"No, oh no!" I cried, frantically trying to lift the beam and free
Eloise.
It would not budge.
I've re-run those events in my mind over and over in the months since,
obsessively worrying at them, trying to find if there was anything I
could've done differently after touching the medallion, but God help me
there isn't.
"Will you be okay now?" asked Carol, still stroking my hair.
I'm not sure I'll ever be okay again, but I nodded: no point burdening
her further. She had enough on her plate already. Carol tucked me in and
then replaced the pacifier I'd dislodged when I woke. For some reason
sucking on it took the edge off my nightmares and I would take anything
that helped.
Eloise had cried out for her Daddy on that awful day, thinking that's who
I was because that's who I appeared to be. But I'm her mother. We'd
chosen that weekend to be the one we'd spend as each other. The switch
was supposed to be temporary, but they never found the Medallion of Zulo
in the wreckage so Ray will be Carol - will be me - for the rest of her
life.
She's never asked me for details of how our daughter died and I won't
tell her. I couldn't do that to her. That burden is for me to bear and me
alone. The beam that pinned Eloise down had trapped her but had not
harmed her. That all changed when we started to transform, me into a copy
of her and she into a copy of me. As she grew older she expanded, but the
space beneath the beam didn't. Over the next thirty minutes I had to
listen to her screams and to the awful sound of her bones cracking and
snapping as she was slowly crushed to death.
And it's all my fault.
We're gun owners and keep our guns locked away in a gun safe. We've
always felt strongly about parents who don't, and would happily see them
charged with reckless child endangerment. Yet for all that, and despite
knowing Eloise's fascination with shiny jewelry, we didn't exercise the
same caution with the medallion. How she got hold of it we'll never know,
but she did. It was a loaded gun and it went off, killing our beloved
daughter.
I will live out my life as Eloise as best I can in tribute to her, live
the life I wanted for my beautiful daughter. But the guilt will be with
me for the rest of my days.
