This is set in the world of the TV show Flashforward. When everyone on the planet blacked out for two minutes and seventeen seconds they got to see a glimpse of their lives six months from then. The visions of the Samms family were different than most. In the future not all of them would be the same person, or even the same gender.... (NOTE: This picks up where 'Altered Fates: Flashforward' left off but it can be read on its own.) ALTERED FATES: FLASHFORWARD 2 by BobH (c) 2009 *** (This story is set in the world of the TV show Flashforward and picks up where ALTERED FATES: FLASHFORWARD left off. However, since it includes several sequences from that tale as seen from another point of view, it should be possible to read this one as a standalone.) *** For 17 year-old beauty queen Lacey Mikulski, this had not been the happiest of car trips, but then with all that had happened to them since Dad had died it wasn't surprising she and her Mom would be more than a little down. Glancing across at her mother, hunkered down over the steering wheel, she could see the stress of the past few months etched on her face. They were approaching a T-junction, her mother slowing the car in order to make a turn, when it happened. One moment Lacey was looking out through the car windscreen.... ...the next she was standing to one side as she watched herself seated at a dressing table, putting the final touches to her make-up. She was wearing a red knit mini dress with a plunging neckline that emphasised her generous cleavage, three inch heels, and sheer black stockings - totally sex-kitten. How could she be both standing here and sitting there, she wondered? "How do I look?" asked the seated figure. "You look fabulous!" Lacey found herself saying, moving forward and seeing her reflection in the mirror for the first time. There were two of her, she realised with a start. No, that wasn't it. This other girl was her sister. Somehow, impossibly, she had acquired a twin. There was a newspaper clipping taped to the corner of the mirror that announced LOCAL TEENS AMONG THE MISSING but Lacey ignored this. "I don't think there's anything else I can teach you about make-up," she said, smiling approvingly at her doppelganger, "you're as good at it now as I am." Smiling at this compliment, the other girl picked up her cigarette from the ashtray on the dressing table, took a long drag, and put it back. "I love having you for a sister," she said, exhaling with a sigh of pleasure. "Me too," said Lacey, knowing this was true, feeling that love. "These past few months I've been happier than I've been in a long time." Her twin stood up, scooped her cigarettes, lighter, and make-up into her purse, and smiled at her sister a little uncertainly. "Did you...get them?" she asked. "Of course I did, silly," said Lacey, handing her a small pack of condoms, which she quickly dropped into her purse. "I hope Mom doesn't find out about this." "So what if she does?" replied Lacey. "I talked her into letting you smoke and I can talk her around on this, too. I'll always have your back, sis, so don't worry. And anyway, we turned eighteen last week so what you do with your body is your affair. You guys have been dating for months now, and it's time you took it to the next level. Do you know what Jake has planned?" "He's taking me for a meal at La Cienga first," she giggled, and he's booked us a room at the Sheraton for afterwards. We'll have all afternoon and evening there to ourselves." Lacey went over and and gave her a quick hug, then exchanged an air kiss with her. "I'm so happy for you," she said. "How about you?" asked her twin. "Do you have plans for this afternoon." "Not really," said Lacey, "but it's a lovely day so I think I might put Wendy in her harness, strap her into her new stroller, and go for a walk in the park. And before you ask, yes I will remember to put her bonnet on her as well. We don't want that sensitive baby skin to catch too much sun." Wendy? They'd found Wendy?! "Yeah, I think I'll check in on Wendy on my way out, too," said her sister, picking up her cigarette and heading out of the room. Lacey took her place at the dressing table, picked up a brush and was about to begin combing her long, blonde hair when her cellphone rang. Flipping it open she was greeted by a picture of the caller, someone she had never seen before. "Wow, hot!" she thought, then answered it. "I was hoping you'd call," she said. "I want you," came the reply, "I want you right now!" "I'm on my way over," said Lacey, grinning.... ...and then she was back in the car, looking through the windscreen into someone's front room. "Oh no," said her mom, groaning. "We've crashed into a house!" There was a woman in the room, who looked to be about the same age as Lacey's mother, staring in shock at the car that had ploughed through the wall of her living room. A moment later she rushied over to the driver's door to help her mother out. Releasing her own seatbelt, Lacey climbed out of the car, shook herself and stared at the mess they had made. She had no memory of the crash which must have happened while she was having that dream... no, that *vision*. Recalling the way the vision ended, with her rushing off to have sex with her lover, someone she had never seen before but who was seriously hot, she couldn't help smiling. "Are you OK?" the woman asked her mother as she brushed herself down. "Yes, thanks we..." she began, then she looked up and saw the woman's face for the first time. A look of shocked recognition crossed her own. "What is it?" asked the woman. "I'm not sure what happened," said her mother, "but I just had a dream...no, a vision... You were in it and so was I." "I was?" said the woman, visibly disturbed by the strange way Lacey's mother was looking at her "But that's not possible. We've never set eyes on each other before today." "No," agreed her mother, "we haven't. What's even stranger is that in my vision I was a man." Oh boy. Even by her mother's standards this was weird. Her Mom stuck her hand out. "My name's Susan, by the way," she said, "Susan Mikulski. But everyone calls me Susie." "I'm Jenna," said the other woman, "Jenna Samms. In this vision of yours...." "We were married and you'd just told me you were pregnant. We were both overjoyed by the news." "Oh my God!" said Jenna Samms, eyes wide with shock, her hand going to her mouth, "That's what I saw in my vision." She sat down heavily on the sofa, and Susan joined her. Ordinarily Lacey would have listened in to their conversation, particularly following such a revelation, but she could see that whatever the two women were going to say to each other was going to be very personal, adult stuff so instead she headed outside via the hole the car had made in the wall. After all that had just happened she needed a cigarette anyway. She had just taken her first drag on that cigarette and was exhaling gratefully, when two boys a year or two younger than herself came around the corner of the house from the garage. "I'm telling you, Jake," said the smaller of the two, "it's not natural us both blacking out at the same time and having visions." Jake? That was the name of her twin sister's boyfriend in her own vision. This Jake was certainly handsome, and when he saw her he ran his eyes over her body and gave a smile of appreciation. Not so his friend, whose eyes went wide and who visibly paled. He recognised her. And she terrified him. As Jake opened his mouth to say something so his friend suddenly bolted past Lacey and clambered through the hole in the front of the house. "What's *his* problem?" she asked. "I think he's just a bit freaked by all this," said Jake, shrugging. He looked like he would have said more, but just then his cellphone rang. Taking it from his pocket he flipped it open. "Yeah?" he said. "What?! OK Mom, I'll be right there." "Gotta go," he said, smiling at Lacey. "I hope I catch you later." "Yeah, whatever," she muttered as he turned and left. Her so far imaginary twin might find him attractive but he definitely wasn't her type. *** "I was in my bedroom, getting ready for a date," said Jake Sciavo, describing the vision he had experienced, "and I was really happy and really nervous, and I never get that way before a date. That's when I knew." "Knew what?" asked Kevin Samms. "That this time it was love, dude, that whoever I was dating was The One, y'know?" "So you...liked what you saw in this...vision?" "Fuck, yeah. Who doesn't want to experience that, right?" "I suppose," said Kevin, who was surprised to see a shocked expression appear on his friend's face. Jake was looking over his shoulder and had obviously just noticed something. "Dude," he said, "there's a car sticking out the front of your house." Kevin turned and, sure enough, he could see the rear of the car surrouded by debris. He couldn't see the rest of since it was out of sight, round the corner of the house from where he and Jake had been shooting hoops in the driveway. "Fuck, we'd better see what happened," he said, strolling over. This would be a big deal most days, but Kevin was more disturbed by these visions, particularly his own. "I'm telling you, Jake," he said, as they rounded the corner of the house, "it's not natural us both blacking out at the same time and having visions." Then he caught sight of the girl and stopped dead, staring at her in horror. It couldn't be, but it was! It was her! She was wearing jeans and a tank-top rather than a red minidress, sheer black stockings, and fuck-me heels, but it was definitely the girl from that awful nightmare of a vision in which he was a baby girl and she had come in to his nursery. She had been smoking a cigarette then, too.... The nursery door had opened and there she'd been, one of the most gorgeous girls Kevin had ever seen. Pausing to take a final drag from her cigarette before stubbing it out in an ashtray in the hall outside, she had the crossed the room to him. "Hello, sweetie," she had said, lifting him out of his playpen. "How's my pretty little baby sister?" It had felt like being picked up by a giantess and hoisted high in the air. She had leaned in and kissed him gently on the forehead, given him a dazzling smile, and then mere minutes ago, Kevin had woken up lying in his driveway. And now here she was, in the real world. It was too much for Kevin. Panicking, he bolted and ran past her, scrabbling his way into his living room through the hole the car had made in the front of the house. Inside his mother was sitting on the sofa talking animatedly to a strange woman. Whatever they were discussing it looked pretty intense. Glancing across the room, Kevin saw his irritating kid sister Julie arrive in the doorway, dressed only in flip-flops and an oversize T- shirt. Her eyes went wide and her jaw dropped when she saw the damage the car had caused. That was when their mother looked up and saw them both. "Ah, good..." she said. *** In her room, 13 year-old Julie Samms gazed out the window to where her brother Kevin and his friend Jake were getting to their feet in the driveway. Not that she paid them much attention. She was too excited about what she had just experienced. She knew it was more than a dream, knew that impossible as it seemed it had been real. She had been older - maybe 18 or 19 - and beautiful, the twin sister of a girl she had never seen before. What it had felt like to look like that, to have that body, those breasts (Julie was flat-chested), to walk gracefully in high heels, to smoke a cigarette, all these things were still vivid and real in her mind. Then there was Wendy, who in her vision was her baby sister. She smiled at the memory of opening the door to the nursery and seeing her for the first time, that pretty little girl, sitting in her playpen surrounded by soft toys, happily sucking on her pacifier. She had looked totally adorable, in her little pink dress with a small matching ribbon in her hair. Julie loved the world she had seen in her vision. More than anything, she wanted to get back there. Hearing voices downstairs, she frowned. Only her mother should be in the house. Puzzled, she headed out of her room to investigate. Her mother was talking to someone else, someone female. Could it be her brother's girlfriend Kirsten, she wondered? But, no. As she made her way downstairs it was obvious the voice belonged to someone older. Reaching the door to the living room she stared in astonishment at the car and the hole it had made. Kevin was standing next to it, and between them, on the sofa, her mother was deep in conversation with a woman she didn't recognise. "Ah, good," said her mother, looking up. "This is Susie Mikulski. She and her daughter Lacey have had an accident - well, you can see that - and they're a bit shaken up. There's a lot of mess needs clearing up so how about you two make a start, hmmm?" "Awww, Mom!!" said Kevin, but they both knew that tone in her voice meant she was serious, so with much grumbling they did as she asked. Julie had expected Kevin to start moving debris but instead he went to the car, whose rear door had sprung open during the crash, and started rooting around in the back. Irritated, Julie crossed the room to him. "What're you doing?" she said, startling him so that he dropped what he had been holding into one of two open bags of clothing sitting upright on the seat." "I was putting this costume jewellery that got spilled back in its bag," he said, "and you made me drop a piece." He reached into the bag of baby clothes to retrieve it. "Shit!" he yelped. "What?" said his sister. "What is it?" "Goddamn thing gave me a shock," he said, pulling a medallion out of the bag. "Felt a weird tingle shoot right up my arm, like static or something." The medallion was one of the tackiest, ugliest things Julie had ever seen. Golden in color, it bore the image of an angel, or possibly a demon. Kevin dropped the medallion in the jewellery bag then turned to his sister. "Right, we'd better clear up some of the serious crap," he said. "Mom'll have a fit if we don't." They started moving debris for a few minutes, until Kevin noticed Julie was staring at him strangely. "What are *you* looking at?" he said, belligerently. "You look...different, smaller," said Julie, puzzled. "Like you're getting younger or something." "What? No, oh no!" he said, rushing over to a wall mirror. One look at his relection was enough to confirm his sister's observation: he *was* getting younger. Which could mean only one thing. Kevin screamed. "Kevin, what is it?" asked their mother rising from the sofa, while Julie looked on in surprise." "I'm turning into a baby girl!" he cried. "It was in my vision, but I don't want to be a baby girl!" That was him, Julie realised, baby Wendy was her brother! She glanced back at the car in time to see Lacey, attracted by all the commotion, clambering back in through the hole. It was her, it was the girl whose twin Julie would become! Then this must be when it all happened. Mind racing, she quickly pieced everything together. It had to be the medallion, she realised. While Kevin was holding it it had come into contact with the baby clothes in the back of the car. There was also a bag of what looked like beauty pageant costumes that had to belong to her future twin, in which case.... It took her a few minutes to summon up the courage but then, with her heart pounding and while everyone else was comforting Kevin, she got into the back of the car, retrieved the medallion, and plunged her hand into the beauty pageant clothing. She felt an immediate tingle throughout her body. "Yes!!" she said, triumphantly, before clambering out of the car and holding the medallion aloft. "This is what did it," she announced, "this is what's changing Kevin." Her mother, Lacey, and Lacey's mom turned their attention to her from a tearful Kevin, who had already regressed to about age twelve and who was, thought Julie, beginning to look kinda girly. "How do you know?" asked her mother. "Because it was on top of the baby clothes when he touched it, and he said he felt a tingling run up his arm when he did. And he's right. I felt the same thing just now when I pushed it into Lacey's clothes." "You did *what*?" said her mother. "Why would you do such a thing?" "Because I saw Lacey in my vision," she said, "and we were twin sisters." "That was *you*?" said Lacey, looking at her with interest. "Wow." "You!" said Kevin, pointing at her accusingly. "It was you in the nursery who picked me up out of the playpen!" "Wait, wait!" said their mother. "So you were Lacey's twin sister and you saw Kevin as a little girl?!" "Well, I didn't know it was him," said Julie, "just that I had a baby sister named Wendy." "Wendy? My Wendy?" said Susan Mikulski, visibly paling. "I think I need to sit down." She sat back down on the sofa and Jenna Samms joined her, putting a comforting arm around the other woman's shoulder. "Susie, what is it?" she said. "Who's Wendy?" "Wendy is my baby sister," said Lacey, grimly. "She's only eighteen months old. Nine weeks ago she was abducted. We don't know who took her. No one does. The police said that with no clues to go on, there probably wasn't much hope of us ever seeing her again. Mom always carries her clothes and some of her other things in the car in case they ever find her when we're on the road." "Oh, Susie," said Jenna, "I'm so sorry." "So because the medallion touched her clothes, Kevin gets to be Wendy now," said Lacey. "That's what we were calling him in the vision, and what we saw seems to be coming true." She glanced over at Julie, who had already grown by an inch and whose T-shirt was showing evidence of breasts budding beneath it from what had previously been a flat chest. Kevin, who now resembled a 10 year-old girl, chose that moment to snatch the medallion from Julie's hand. "If it changed me once it can change me back!" he said. He grabbed a jacket he had left on a chair earlier and thrust the medallion into it. Frowning, he then started stabbing the medallion into the jacket repeatedly. "No tingling," he whimpered. "It's not working!" "Maybe it only works on someone once?" said Lacey, thoughtfully. "It looks like it, yes," said Jenna. "I can still barely believe there's even such a thing as a magic medallion, but I can't deny the evidence of my own eyes. Something that can transform you into a copy of the last person to wear a piece of clothing is too dangerous to be swinging around, particularly to the rest of us, so please give it to me, Kevin." Reluctantly, he did as she asked. Holding the chain and taking great care not to touch the actual medallion itself, Jenna dropped it into a desk drawer. "I don't know what your father's going to make of all this when he gets home," she said. *** Forty minutes after setting out from work on his bicycle, Martin Samms turned off the cycle path and on to the familiar streets near his house. Another couple of minutes and he would be where he needed to be at this terrible time: back home with his wife Jenna and their children. His ear buds were plugged into the small AM/FM radio clipped to the strap of his backpack and it was tuned to the local news station. All the way home he had listened to the news as the first reports started coming in from other cities and then other countries. Whatever this thing was it looked like it had been a global event. But as vital as the news was, Martin found his mind kept drifting back to his vision. What worried him the most about it was how much it excited him. He was a straight, married man. Seeing himself as a woman in his vision, having sex with a man and enjoying it, should not be turning him on, but it was. Every detail was seared onto his brain and he couldn't get it out of his mind. Martin vividly remembered groaning with pleasure as his lover pinched the engorged nipple of his left breast, then moaning softly as the man slid the fingers of his other hand into his wet pussy, expertly working his clitoris. "Don't stop," he had whispered, looking up into the face of his lover, a man he had never laid eyes on before that moment, "please don't stop." Yet stop he had, but only in order to climb between Martin's legs and to maneuver his rock hard member into place over Martin's vagina. Martin had responded by eagerly drawing his knees up to his shoulders, ready to receive his lover. "I love you, Susie," the man had said, smiling down at him. "Ooh, I love you too, baby," Martin had replied happily, and known as he did so that this was true. He did love this stranger. He had let out a small gasp as his lover had suddenly entered him, his urgent, expertly judged thrusts soon bringing Martin to orgasm, the best he had ever known. It had been ecstacy.... And then Martin had woken up in his office, to a world in chaos. Everyone in the office had blacked out simultaneously. Everyone had experienced a vision of themselves elsewhere, and doing something else. From comparing notes it seemed these had been visions of themselves in the future. Six months in the future. Of course, Martin's vision had differed from everyone else's. Rather than his own future he had been granted a vision of one belonging to this 'Susie' for some reason. Why this had happened, who she might be, he had no idea. Since she had been on her back the whole time, and in the absence of any mirrors, he had no idea what she looked like, either. Catching sight of his house for the first time Martin was shocked to see the car sticking out of the front of it. "Oh god!" he said, fearing the worst. Arriving at the house, Martin dropped his bike and rushed in through the hole. Inside he found a pair of twin teenage girls talking animatedly to each other and, sitting on the sofa, his wife. She had her arm around the shoulders of another woman, who was cradling a crying baby in her arms, and was the only one of the five he recognised. "Jen?" he said. "I quit early to make sure you and the kids were alright, what with everyone on the planet blacking out and getting a glimpse of themselves six months from now. I guess the blackout explains the car in our living room, but what's going on? Where are our kids?" He eyed the strangers suspiciously. "Wait everyone in the world blacked out and saw the future?" said Jenna. "This happened to everyone in the world?!" "Yeah, I was following it all on my radio all the way back. Whatever happened, this thing was global. So...the kids." "Okay, you might need to sit down, Marty," said Jenna, getting to her feet. "As fantastic as it sounds, Julie is the twin in the long T- shirt, and that baby girl is Kevin." "Is this some sort of sick joke?" said Martin, incredulously. "It's no joke, Dad," said the twin Jenna had indicated. "It's me, Julie. A magic medallion turned Kevin into a baby girl and me into a copy of Lacey." "Lacey?" "Lacey Mikulski," said the other twin. "Pleased to meet you Mr Samms. It's my Mom's car sticking through your wall." "How can you be Julie?" he said, staring at her sister in disbelief. She whispered something in his ear. "My God, it really *is* you. Then the baby is Kevin?" Lacey's mother had handed to baby to Jenna, who was now cradling him in her turn. Martin gently stroked his head. "Poor little guy," he said. "So tell me exactly how this happened." "It was the medallion," said Lacey's mother, who was looking at him very strangely, Martin thought. Reaching into a drawer of their desk she pulled out one of the ugliest pieces of jewellery he had ever seen. "If you touch this to clothes someone has worn it transforms you into a copy of them. I had bags of clothing belonging to Wendy and to Lacey on the back seat of my car and, well...." "Got you," said Martin. "May I see it?" "Well as long as you keep it clear of anyone else's clothing, I don't see why not," she said. Martin reached out for the medallion, and as his fingers closed on it he felt a strange tingling run along his arm." "Whoa, static," he said. "No, I felt it too. It's just how the children described it." "But it never touched any clothing!" "No," said Jenna, looking at her husband with concern, "it didn't, but you were both touching it when Susie handed it to you." "'Susie'?" said Martin, a falling feeling in the pit of his stomach. "You're Susie?" So it was his own future he'd seen after all. "Susan Mikulski," said the woman. "In my vision I was you, and I'm guessing you were me but never got to see your face. Looks like the medallion works in more ways than one, and that we're about to turn into each other." "How...how long does it take?" said Martin, staring at his hands and feeling oddly excited. "It took about a half hour for Kevin and Julie," said his wife. "Their changes completed only a few minutes before you arrived home." "No point trying to reverse the change by touching the medallion to your own clothing either," said Julie. "We tried that with Kevin and it didn't work. It looks like one transformation each is all you get." "This thing is just too dangerous to handle safely," said Susie, carefully putting it back in the desk drawer. Martin turned to the twins. "Girls," he said, "the grown-ups need to talk so make yourselves useful by getting the crib down from the loft, putting it in the spare room, and moving the bed in the spare room into Julie's room. With the chaos out there it's going to be impossible to get back across the city today so everyone will be staying here tonight." The teenagers looked reluctant to leave - they obviously wanted to watch the transformation of their parents - but they did as he asked. *** Jenna Samms gently rocked the baby girl, her son, surprised by how good it felt to have a baby in her arms once more. Poor Kevin. She couldn't imagine how hard this must be on him, and he couldn't tell her. After the medallion failed to reverse his transformation, Kevin had fallen silent. Sitting in his mother's lap, with her hugging and trying to console him, he had seemed rendered speechless by the enormity of what was happening to him. Numbly, he had watched as his body shrank and changed, clearly horrified at seeing his clothes and everything and everyone around him getting bigger. When he did find his voice again it was too late. He was a baby and had lost the power of speech. The noises that emerged when he tried to speak were those you would expect from a baby the age he had regressed to. Ah Kevin, her first-born. She had loved him despite how mean he had been to his sister almost since the day she was born. He had resented Julie, she knew, been jealous of all the attention she got as the youngest, attention that until her birth had all been lavished on him. That wasn't going to be a problem for him any more. As the baby, he was going to get all the love and attention he ever could have wished for. Along with clothing, Susie had other essential baby supplies in her car so they were able to diaper him and put him in a cute little white dress and knitted booties. He probably hated that, but all the clothes Susie had with her were for a baby girl. When he had, understandably, started crying Susie had suggested a pacifier and, to Jenna's surprise, Kevin had accepted it and it seemed to be comforting him. Now that he was quiet, Jenna gazed at Susie and Martin, their bodies already slowly starting to change, confused by her own feelings. "So," said Martin, as soon as the twins had left, "what happens now? Our children have just turned into Susan's children, but since I'm about to turn into her I guess that'll make them my children again." "They never stopped being your children," said Susan, stroking Kevin's head and smiling at him wistfully, "it's just...I hoped I'd see Wendy again, but in my heart I never really expected to." "What, I don't..." began Martin, confused. Jenna explained about the abduction. "Ah, I see," he said, laying a sympathetic hand on Susan's shoulder. "From here on," said Jenna, "it looks like the kids have got three parents." Martin looked surprised by this, Susan relieved. "What?" said Martin. "No offense, Susan, but we've only just met you..." "...and you're about to become her," said Jenna. "Look, Marty, there's no easy way to say this but in our visions Susie and I are together and she is you. That's the reality we have to face." "So we're breaking up?" "Fate is breaking us up. You're turning into a woman and I'm not a lesbian," she said, looking at him appraisingly. He was slowly shrinking, his hair getting longer, his frame less bulky, budding breasts now visible beneath his cycling top. " Plus we've seen the future and I know for a fact that in it you're happy with Frank." "Frank?" said Martin. "Who's Frank?" "Frank Mason, a local plumber," said Jenna. "In our visions Susie and I talked about you two and how happy you were together." "So that was his name," said Martin quietly, looking stunned. "Yes," said Jenna. "I know him, so I think I must be the one who introduces you." "You never did say what you saw in your vision," said Susan, looking at him curiously. "Myself as a woman...as you," he said, his voice now sounding distinctly female, "having sex with a man." "Whoa," said Jenna, laughing out loud, "and were you enjoying it?" "Yes," said Martin, quietly. "A lot." "Then that's it," she said. "That's our future." The three of them stared at each other, not quite knowing what to say next, an awkward silence broken when Kevin started to cry again. "I recognise that sound," said Susan. "It means she's hungry. I've got a sachet of baby formula and a bottle in my car. That should satisfy her until Martin and I have finished swapping places." "Until we finish swapping places?" said Martin, puzzled. "Oh, didn't you realise?" said Susan, giving him an amused look. "Wendy was only eighteen months old when she was taken. I've never stopped lactating." *** "Hey, I recognise this room!" said Lacey entering Julie's bedroom. "This was our room in the vision." "Yep," said Julie, hoping Lacey liked it. "Looks like this will be more than just an overnight stay." "And you're OK with me moving in here and taking half your space?" "It's the biggest bedroom, bigger even than Mom and Dad's, so I give up some room and I gain a twin sister. Sounds like a good deal to me. If we move my computer desk along the wall that'll make enough room for the other bed." "Good," said Lacey, "and it's more room than I've got in our tiny apartment, anyway." "I'll be back in a minute and then we can start moving things," said Julie, "I just need to make a quick trip to the bathroom before we start." "Mind if I use your computer to check my email while you're gone?" asked Lacey. "Go ahead," said Julie. "We're sisters now and we should start sharing." Five minutes later, when Julie returned, Lacey had already moved the computer desk and was moving some boxes. "Looks like we're ready for the bed." said Julie. The guest room was the smallest bedroom in the house and had been first Kevin's nursery the Julie's. Her parents had then made it the guest room but had never got round to redecorating. "Disney princesses?" said Lacey, surveying the the pretty cartoon characters on the pink wallpaper. "It's not as if I had a say in the matter," said Julie, "being a baby an'all but, yeah, I loved the Disney princesses." So saying, she grabbed one end of the room's single bed, Lacey the other, and they carried it through to her room. Once it was in position, they took a break and sat down on their beds, facing each other. Julie was frowning. "What's the matter?" asked Lacey. "I'm not sure," said Julie. "I've got this odd craving for... something. I've never felt it before." "Ah," said Lacey, smiling. "That means you want a cigarette." "It does?" "Yeah, it does. Think about it: the medallion made you an exact copy of me. I smoke, so your body is going to crave cigarettes just like mine does. You seemed to be really enjoying your cigarette in our vision." "Yeah, I was, but Mom'll have a fit if I start smoking." "Leave her to me. I talk her round, remember?" "That's right," said Julie, laughing. "How weird is this, that we know this stuff is going to happen?" "Weird to the max," said Lacey, "but pretty cool, too. What's coolest is knowing how close we're going to be." "Yeah," said Julie, looking into her twin's eyes, "it truly is." "Right, we can go outside for a smoke later. Right now we ought to get the crib down from the loft." Once in the loft they located the crib, which had been diassembled, and also a box containing other items from when the guest room had been a nursery. "Oh, look!" said Julie, fishing out a brightly colored mobile. "The hook for this is still in the ceiling over where we'll be putting the crib. We can hang it back up." "How about the rest of this stuff?" said Lacey, indicating the rattles, teething ring, baby harness, and soft toys the box also contained. "I guess it can't hurt," said Julie. "Kevin might need all those things soon." "So," said Lacey as they worked, "you saw Kevin in your vision. Did he seem happy?" "He didn't seem unhappy," said Lacey, considering the question. "Only he really wasn't pleased about changing," said Lacey. "Yeah, but in the future I saw him in his playpen, surrounded by soft toys, looking very content as he sucked on his pacifier. I'd say he was happy. It must just take him a while to get used to it." "That makes sense, I suppose. Does Kevin have a girlfriend?" "Yeah, Kirsten," said Julie. "She's a cheerleader, and the only way my brother ever got someone like her is because he's best friends with Jake, who's captain of our high school football team. But I guess the only reason for her to see Kevin now is if we hire her to babysit him." "Ah yes, Jake," said Lacey, smiling. "Your boyfriend." "Not yet, but oh yes!" sighed Julie, "Yes, please!" When they had finished erecting the crib the girls returned to the living room, a half-hour after they had left it. When they entered, Julie was surprised to see her father bottle-feeding her brother while her mother was helping Susan Mikulski on with her bra. Then the penny dropped. "Hi, Mom," she said, smiling. "Helping Dad with his first bra, I see." "None of your lip, young lady," said her father in Susan Mikulski's sweet, high voice, as his wife adjusted his breasts in the cups. "So what do we call each of you now?" said Lacey. "And what are our domestic arrangements going to be from here on?" "All good questions," said her now male mother. "We have a lot to discuss." And discuss it they did, for the rest of the day, pausing only to eat and for Susan to reverse her car out to the street so that the others could staple a large polythene sheet over the hole. It would keep the weather out until the wall could be repaired, which with all the chaos out there and the demand for builders might take several weeks. Eventually, feeling tired, the twins turned in for the night - then spent several hours in animated girl-talk until deciding to finally go to sleep. Julie was the first to wake the following morning, momentarily started by the unfamilar curves she felt as she sleepily ran her hands across her chest, and then laughing happily when she remembered the previous day. So it hadn't been a dream, after all. Julie smiled at Lacey, who was still sound asleep, then donned her robe and, after taking a pee and brushing her teeth, headed downstairs. She found her mother in the kitchen, the only other person up. "Morning, Mom," said Julie, yawning and taking her place at the breakfast bar. "Good morning, Jules," replied Jenna Samms, eyeing her daughter with a critical eye. "I still can't get over you looking like that." "Yeah," I know," laughed Julie. "From ugly duckling to beauty queen in half an hour." "I never thought you were an ugly duckling. You're my daughter and I always loved you just the way you were." "I know, Mom, and I love you for it, but I feel like I've just won the lottery." "Hmmm. So, your usual breakfast OK?" "I guess, but can I have coffee instead of tea?" "Of course you can, but since when do you drink coffee?" "Since my body became an exact copy of Lacey's. She prefers coffee and her tastes seem to have come with the body." Of course, how Julie actually wanted to start the day was with a cup of coffee and a cigarette, but it was too early to spring that idea on her Mom just yet. After yesterday's revelations, Julie was curious as to where the adults had spent the night. Two of them would have slept in her parents bedroom and the third in what had been Kevin's room, but who had slept where? This wasn't the sort of question she could ask outright. "So," she said, "how's Dad this morning?" "He's upstairs with Kevin," said Jenna. "It's important we don't disturb him while he's giving your brother his morning feed." "Uh, okay, I guess," said Julie, puzzled as to why her father bottle- feeding her brother should be such a big deal. She thought she remembered Lacey saying they only carried a single sachet of baby formula in their car, but obviously not. As soon as her mother had poured her a cup, Julie took her coffee and wandered into the living room, only to discover that during the night someone had slashed their way through the polythene sheet over the hole in the wall. Quickly, she checked the desk drawer, knowing what she would find before she opened it. The medallion was gone. *** The sex had been wonderful, thought Lacey, a huge grin on her face. Lying there, idly stroking her lover's naked back and basking in that lovely post-coital afterglow, both of them happy to be together in silence and not wanting to break the mood with words, she found herself thinking back on all that had happened in the weeks since the flashforward. What a day that had been! It took a half hour in all, thirty short minutes for Kevin to go from a strapping 15 year-old boy to an 18 month-old baby girl, and watching it happen had been beyond weird. What had been even weirder had been witnessing Julie's transformation, seeing her get taller, curvier, grow breasts, and having that long, plain face gradually morph into Lacey's own. But she couldn't have been happier with the outcome. In the past few weeks she and Julie had grown incredibly close, as close as if they had actually been born twins. Lacey had enjoyed teaching her about her hair and make-up and helping her bring herself up to where a girl the age she now was would be academically. This last was imporant since they wanted to go to college together. Then there was the added bonus that while being a beauty queen had brought Lacey some work as a model, having a twin had created some serious interest and landed them a modelling contract that should cover all their college fees. In the days that had followed Julie, Kevin, and Martin's exposure to the medallion they had had to put in place a cover story to explain their new circumstances. They knew from the newspaper clipping Julie had seen taped to the mirror in their vision (and which Lacey had ignored), headed LOCAL TEENS AMONG THE MISSING, that they would report Kevin and Julie Samms as missing persons. That was the easy bit. Explaining to the police that Lacey's missing baby sister had turned up with the twin she never knew she had was a bit more complicated. The story they told was that after the flashforward, Julie had been found outside the Mikulski's apartment, with Wendy, and no memory of how she had got there. In order to carry this off, Lacey had masqueraded as Julie (being older and more confident) and she had managed to convince everyone her story was genuine. It was obvious Lacey and Julie were twins, which a DNA test confirmed, so the police theorised Julie had been snatched at birth and Susan never told she had been carrying twins. As it happened, a baby selling ring had been busted a few years earlier at the hospital where Lacey had been born and her own records conveniently lost in a fire so this was an easy sell. Since Julie had shown up with Wendy she must have snatched her but since she could not recall anything before the flashforward, which was further assumed to be what had triggered amnesia in her case, where she had grown up and what the circumstances were that had led her to snatch her sister were a mystery. And Susan Mikulski let the police know she was happy for them to remain that way. She had her daughters back, her baby and the child she never knew about, and that was enough for her. The story had been a minor sensation for a short time but with all the other stuff that had happened as a result of the flashforward the press had soon moved on. And so here they were, living under as one big family. The kids had a Dad and two Moms now and they liked it that way. All the parents were referred to by their news names rather than the old, and they called both the new Susan and Jenna "Mom". Of course, with Susan and Frank's romance hotting up she spent quite a few nights away at their old apartment, or "Susie's Love-Shack" as the twins jokingly referred to it. Lacey loved her life. From her point of view, having that medallion come into it had been nothing but a blessing. She remembered what she had discovered about it that day when, left alone with Julie's computer, when a web search on magic medallions had taken her to wikipedia where, next to an artist's impression of their medallion, she had read: THE MEDALLION OF ZULO. A powerful mystical artifact whose exact origins are shrouded in mystery,[1] the Medallion of Zulo allegedly possesses the ability to alter a person's form. If two people touch it at the same moment, they will be changed into exact copies of each other down to the smallest detail.[2] If a person wearing it touches something once worn by another to the medallion, they will also be changed into a copy of that person.[3] Once someone has changed, it will be twelve hours before the medallion will work on them again. Being pregnant or menstruating blocks the medallion's abilities. Though there are reports of the Medallion of Zulo and accounts of those affected by it going back to at least Victorian times,[cite?] most experts regard it as an urban myth and do not give much credence to the stories of those claiming to have encountered it.[4][5] It seemed to Lacey the Medallion of Zulo had improved everyone's life - with one possible exception. She hadn't trusted herself to judge Kevin's case and so had asked Julie to describe how he had seemed in their vision. There were two reasons she had not trusted her judgement, the first being that losing Wendy had almost broken her and her mother's hearts and realistically this was the only way they were ever likely to have her back. She was satisfied from her twin's description that Kevin had at least made his peace with his transformation. And why wouldn't he have? In Lacey's view women were superior to men in every respect. What had happened to Kevin had been an improvement, and maybe he had come to that same realisation. She hoped so. With a clear conscience she had taken the medallion from the desk drawer, tossed it down the storm drain at the corner of the street, and faked the break-in. It was far too dangerous an item to keep around and Lacey did not want to take the chance an accident might occur and one of them would end up being transformed. They were all perfect now, the way they had been in their visions, and she was determined to keep them that way. Then there was the other reason, the delightful second reason, why she had not trusted herself to judge Kevin's case.... "It's strange to think I first laid eyes on you in my vision, where I was looking at photos of us together," said Lacey's lover, stirring in bed beside her. "Do you think we would ever have got together in real life if I hadn't phoned you before it ended?" "Who knows?" said Lacey. "But I'm sure glad we did." "Me too. But it makes you wonder about fate and about predetermination." "Whoa, that's a big word for a cheerleader." "I'm serious, Lacey," said her girlfriend, giving her a playful thump. "You've always known you were gay but I'd never been with a girl before, never even considered it. Yet because of how I felt about you in the vision, here I am, feeling that way about you for real and wondering what I'm going to say to my boyfriend if he returns." "I don't think that's something you need worry about, Kirsten," said Lacey, kissing her on the head. "I don't think Kevin is ever coming back." In fact she was sure of it. *** EPILOGUE: Dropping the the T-keys into the slots in the metal, George Rodriguez turned them and lifted the inspection hatch cover, laying it down on the road beside him. With all the rain there had been lately and all the crap that got washed into the drains the county had sent him out to check this section of the system. So far he had only had to drop a hose down one of these traps and suck the crap into the tank on the back of his truck. Mostly he could hook out any obstructions. Pulling the long pole hook from the rack on the side of the truck, George reflected on his life. This wasn't exactly what he thought he'd end up doing when he was fighting in the Gulf War, but given where a lot of other vets his age had ended up, either on the streets or in jail, maybe he wasn't doing so bad. Some would say that having a job at all in the current economy meant you were doing well and perhaps there was something to that. Of course, it seemed like the world had turned upside down since the flashforward. Unlike most people George didn't believe everyone in the world had been given a glimpse of their futures. No, he was convinced what they had seen, however banal, were actually fantasies. After all, in his own vision he'd seen himself back in uniform, saying the Pledge of Alliegance with the rest of his troop. Only it had been a Girl Scout uniform and he had been one of the young girls in a scout troop. Shining a torch into the darkness, George saw something glinting in the muck. Could it be...? Excited, he lowered his pole hook into the trap and hooked the object's chain. Lifting it out, and wiping the mud from it with his gloved hands, he saw it was a tacky looking medallion with what appeared to be a crude image of some sort of demon or angel on its face. George was delighted with his find. "The Medallion of Zulo!" he said. Well, I'll be...!" It looked like he'd get to be a Girl Scout after all. The End. ********************************* Note: I love scenarios in which something weird happens to everyone on the planet - as those who've read my 'Genderwave', 'Changeday' and 'Switchworld' stories will know - so it was pretty much inevitable I'd set a tale in the universe of TV's 'Flashforward'. Those of you who enjoyed this one might also like my other Altered Fates stories, some of which are listed below: The X-Files trilogy - 1. Altered Fates/X-Files: The Scam 2. Altered Fates: The X-File 3. Altered Fates: The X-File Reopened Though this reflects their internal chronology the tales are standalones and, in fact, no.1 was the last one written. Altered Fates Agent Zulo

ALTERED FATES: AGENT ZULO by BobH (c) 2011 "Yes, baby, oh yes!!" I moaned, bending over the motel room desk as my partner took me from behind, grasping my hips and snorting as he rammed himself into me. Red-faced and breathing heavily, the effort seemed to be taking a lot out of him. Giving one last thrust that almost pushed me into the wall, he came with a final labored grunt. Having shot his load he pulled out of me and sat down heavily on the bed, sweating...

Altered Fates Triptych

Altered Fates: Triptych By BobH (c) 2003 Lucius Duvall checked his reflection and nodded his approval at what he saw. His hair and beard might have long since turned silver grey, giving him an illusion of age and wisdom that, in terms of age at least, was beyond his years, but both were immaculately trimmed, their edges razor-sharp. His suit was tailored to perfection, the trouser creases sharp and straight; his shoes polished to an almost mirror-finish; the carnation in...

ALTERED FATES/X-FILES: THE SCAM By Bob H. (c) 2003 FBI HEADQUARTERS WASHINGTON, DC. FBI agent Fox Mulder was starting to hate working alone. Hidden away as he was in the windowless room of a back basement accessible only via a corridor lined with dusty storage racks, he often felt both unappreciated and as forgotten as many in the bureau would like the X-files themselves to be. Altered Fates The Things we do for Friends

Altered Fates: The Things We Do For Friends part 1 of 5 By Morpheus I stood in the school bathroom with my half soapy hands underneath the water faucet, grimacing as I rinsed them off. Then pausing for a second, I looked up and into the mirror that was hung on the wall in front of me. The same familiar 14 year old boy that I always saw looked back at me with a sour expression. His messy brown hair was in need of a cut and his nose still had blood dripping from it. "Shit."...

Altered Fates Project Zulo

(Author's Note: This story provides a finale to all the Altered Fates tales I've posted here to date. It contains spoilers for, and resolves dangling threads from, most of those eleven stories. ALTERED FATES: A CHRISTMAS TALE by BobH (c) 2012 Ed Geraghty sat down heavily on the changing room bench and sighed. He felt every minute of his fifty-six years, and then some. Any positive effect on his health of thirty five years pounding the streets delivering mail had been more than offset by the same number of years spent drinking hard liquor to excess.

Altered Fates 3rd Strike And Your Out

Following my debut story last week (Lord's Prayer), along with the feedback I've received (thanks Eric Bloodstone, Jennifer Adams, Mindy Rich and all the others) I have gotten the bug ! This is a spin-off story from Lord's Prayer which, I hope, wraps up this episode. If found that, although this started out at an even pace, it turned fairly dark about half way through as the story took on a life of it's own and reflected the mood I was in at the time. Hope that some still enjoy this...

Altered Fates Domestic Tranquility with The Nanny

As always excessive praise is always welcome No copyright infringement intended. The rights belong to CBS and Childhood Sweethearts. CJ and I are just having fun not meaning any harm. Altered Fates: Domestic Tranquility with The Nanny By Eric and Caleb Jones Fran Fine's annoyingly nasal voice hammered at Maxwell's ears like a sledgehammer. She was sexy and lovable but oh, that voice of hers. Perhaps he should insist she go to a voice training class, but every time he hinted at...

Altered Fates The XFile

(Author's Note: For anyone concerned with continuity, I figure this story occurs somewhere around the middle of the run of the X-FILES.) ALTERED FATES: THE X-FILE By BobH (c) 2002 FBI TRAINING FACILITY, QUANTICO, VIRGINIA. With her usual methodical efficiency, FBI agent Dr. Dana Scully had carried out a full post mortem examination of the two bodies that had been shipped to the morgue here at Quantico. Altered Fates The Daughter

The Medallion of Zulo was a powerful instrument of fate, but sometimes the fate it brought was death. ALTERED FATES: THE DAUGHTER by BobH (c) 2014 I woke screaming, lurching upright in bed as that scream subsided into great, wrenching sobs. It was the sounds again, those terrible cracking and snapping sounds I couldn't escape. The bedroom door burst open then Carol was there, taking my tiny body in her arms, rocking me back and forth, my head on her breasts,...

Altered Fates Stabbed in the Back

Altered Fates: Stabbed In The Back By: Regina Lawson I may have been selfish; in fact, I was selfish, I knew it. I wanted so much to make some sort of difference in the world that I overrode my wife?s objections and took the diplomatic position offered to me anyhow. I was to take up a minor position at our embassy in Panama which was responsible for American tourism, but that put me in touch with intelligence assets in the Central American region. My name is Stuart Barnes...

Altered Fates Chimera Pt1

Altered Fates: Chimera, Part 1 By Elliot Reid I stood at the window, peering out into the cold morning light. I waited a full five minutes, face squashed against the glass, feeling my nose get uncomfortably cool. The trees in the avenue were in full leaf and I couldn't see far down the street, however much I squinted. I saw a vehicle move. Was that my parents' SUV gliding back along the road? Nope, false alarm. I was paranoid my folks would return. It was known to happen. Mom...

Altered Fates Chimera Pt3

Altered Fates: Chimera, Part 3 By Elliot Reid I slept fitfully that night, back at home in my own bed. I was exhausted from my lovemaking with Simone, who since her transformation had almost limitless demand for sex inside Ayesha's lithe body. But even though I felt sucked dry I was jazzed by the experience. I was on a high. It was late when I'd left Simone. My parents would raise Cain if I stayed out too long. But before I walked out the door we talked over Simone's plan to turn...

Altered Fates Chimera Pt5

Altered Fates: Chimera, Part 5 By Elliot Reid Jase and I were both victims of the Medallion of Zulo; something we discovered the first night we slept together. We became close after that. We weren't in love or anything, but I welcomed Jase's support, his understanding. He knew what it was like to have your life turned upside down by a change of sex, of identity. Jase looked in the mirror each morning and saw a borrowed face. He'd been through the struggle of reinventing...

Altered Fates Dennis

Altered Fates: Dennis (I know, its not the greatest name, but it works) By Morpheus ([email protected]) Walking home from work, I happened to look down, and saw a small brass colored medallion sitting in the gutter. Curiously, I pulled it out and held it up examining it. When I'd seen it, I'd hoped that it might be worth something, but as I looked at it, I realized that it was only a cheap piece of costume jewelry. Probably for kids or something. I noticed that there was a...

Altered Fates Auntie Em II

When I wrote Auntie Em, I had no intention of writing a sequel to it. However, after I finished it I started thinking about a few other ideas I had for the main characters and decided to use them as well. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, this one turned out quite a bit longer than I'd anticipated. For those of you who haven't read Auntie Em first, I suggest that you do before reading this. Altered Fates: Auntie Em II By Morpheus Emily felt bored....

Altered Fates A Promise Kept

Altered Fates: A Promise Kept By Jennifer Adams "Mike! Where have you been?" Connie asked. It was more of a demand rather than a question. She had been waiting and wondering where her husband had been for several hours. He wasn't normally a man who left and didn't come home. At least not until SHE came back to town. SHE was Mike's childhood friend. They had been neighbors growing up and played together all the time. Her name was Dana. "I'm sorry dear. I was over at Dana's...

Altered Fates Lyles Story

Lyle's Story by Grendel There are two sides to every story. Most of us would prefer to see the world in black and white, but the decisions we make are never as clear- cut as that. I know that I've made some enemies in my life, and perhaps with hindsight some of the pain that I've caused could have been avoided, but I've never deliberately acted with malice. I've just made some bad choices. I grew up in the shadow of my elder brother, Ken. He was the Golden Child, the...

Altered Fates Body Switch

Altered Fates: Body Switch By: Wayne Halderman Edited by: Heather Hi. I'm really William James Campbell. Or, should I say, I used to be. The truth is, I had my body stolen from me. I was 25 years old, 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighed 285 pounds. I had an athletic build, blonde hair and brown eyes. It all started with me seeing a picture of a girl in a pink dress and saying to myself, "She used to be a male Olympic swimmer before her body got stolen. Now she's a prissy...

Altered Fates My Best Friends Girl

Altered Fates: My Best Friend's Girl By Jennifer Adams I remember what I was doing when I received that fateful call. I was having sex on the beach with Jennifer Aniston. She was hot as ever and all over me. Just as we reached our mutual peak she opened her mouth to speak, but all I heard was a telephone ring. I suddenly became confused and then she disappeared. I mean like one moment she was there and the next pop, but I kept hearing this phone ringing. Then everything else began...

Altered Fates Fait Accompli

Altered Fates: Fait Accompli by Raven Mark approached his dad nervously. He had only passed his driver's examination last week, but his entire existence now revolved around whether he could use his father's car tonight. If he could pick her up in a car, he would be deemed worthy of her...

Altered Fates Danny Boy

Altered Fates: Danny Boy By Morpheus The clock quietly ticked, the only sound in the room. Danny Mason looked around the table, seeing his relatives, all waiting quietly as the lawyer gathered his materials, getting ready to read the will. The others didn't want Danny to be there, thinking that he was too young at 15 for this, but he was closer than any of them to his Uncle Benny. Danny almost smiled, fondly remembering Uncle Benny. He had always been a bit eccentric,...

Altered Fates: Faith By Morpheus It was late in the afternoon, and Father Christopher wiped the sweat from his brow, and straightened his collar. Some of them listened intently, while others ignored him, focusing instead on the blankets and food that he'd brought. As he finished, Father Christopher closed his bible, feeling...

Altered Fates Just passing through

After Faith, I decided to do something more with the medallion, showing how it passes from one person to another, in 3 short tales. I was in a rather dark mood as I wrote this one, so you've been warned. If anyone else wishes to archive this, please contact me. Altered Fates: Just Passing Through By Morpheus Mother Catherine looked down her elderly nose towards the dirty old man sitting on the ground in front of her. Disgusting, she thought, that any human would let themselves...

Altered Fates "... to heal a soul " by Olivia Evans James watched Karen Short, the cute blonde who lived next door, through her bedroom window. He had been climbing the tree next to her window to retrieve a crashed kite belonging to the young kid across the street when he noticed the young teenager standing in front of her dresser. What on earth was she doing? James thought. Karen slipped a medallion over her head. Reaching into a plastic bag she pulled a bra out and...

Altered Fates The Vacation Souvenir

Altered Fates: The Vacation Souvenir by Tim Willows "Be careful!" June cried. Philip dismissed his wife's warnings with a backward wave of his hand. She stood anxiously on the dock as he swam farther and farther out into the lake. The early autumn sky was grey and many of the trees at the edge of the water were already bare. The water was freezing, and June had decided to stay out of it after only dipping her foot into it. Philip had laughed at her, shivering in her bikini...

Altered Fates Child Star

Altered Fates: Child Star by Tim Willows It had become a nightly ritual: Barry would arrive home late, after an exhausting day of attending auditions. His wife Valerie, who also acted as his agent, would be sitting by the telephone. "Anything?" he'd ask her. "No, Barry," she'd say, "not today. Maybe tomorrow." He hadn't had an acting part in months, and whereas it used to surprise him when it turned out another day had passed without a job offer, he was starting to despair....
