"We have reports of another murder, sir..." a shaky voice said over a
walkie.
"Again!? Ugh, alright. Drop off the details on my desk ASAP," another
voice replied. "This is the fourth one in over a month... Just what the
hell is going on?"
"Same calling card as the previous three; whoever is doing this is one
sick S.O.B.," the voice came back.
Detective Owen Wilkes of the Crimson City Police Department had been on
this particular murder case since the very first incident. Four teenage
boys had gone missing and their bodies were later found in rather odd
places. The issue was the bodies were teenage girls around the same age
as the boys and, after extensive DNA testing, it was confirmed the
girls were the missing boys.
Crimson City was known for two things: its rather odd name predating
colonial times and that it was home to a certain business that had
finally solved a big issue nobody was even aware of. EWL Industries had
seemingly appeared overnight almost ten years ago; claiming to have
finally made it easier for those who felt they were the wrong gender to
change without the hassle of invasive surgery.
Many doctors scoffed at such a crazy notion, as would be expected, but
they were soon being supplied the specialized drug produced by EWL
Industries. As time went on, doctors had figured out that patients
still needed to take hormone replacements for this magical drug to
really work which, for anyone transgendered, was just a walk in the
park.
Owen never paid much attention to it; as long as people were happy then
more power to them...at least that was his thought process until his
longtime friend came out as transgendered and took the leap. David
Fletcher had eventually become Sarah Fletcher and while nothing had
changed in the slightest between the two, Owen's late wife had more to
do with that than he'd care to admit.
The detective was only in his 30's, yet his sixteen-year-old son
reminded him just how old he was getting. Riley Wilkes was Owen's one
and only child with his late wife, Cecilia. He was "definitely his
father's son", she would say when Riley was younger. Unfortunately,
Cecilia had passed a few years prior from a long drawn out battle with
lung cancer. It was thanks to Riley that Owen was able to go on without
the company of his beloved.
Speaking of young Riley Wilkes; he was the captain of his school's
football team that many girls his age found incredibly "hot". He was
very popular among his peers, with no one really having anything bad to
say about him, and even had a steady relationship with a girl named
Tamara who was the same age as him. A lot of girls, Tamara included,
were surprised a girl like her was dating someone like Riley. She
considered herself pretty nerdy despite her above average looks, so to
be dating the captain of the football team was almost like a dream come
true. "She wasn't even a cheerleader!", she thought, which to her was
even more incredible.
It had been a fairly normal day for the boys. While Owen was hard at
work in search of the murderer, his son was focusing on his studies and
extracurricular activities. Riley made it home shortly before his
father, immediately setting off to the shower to wash off the sweat of
an intense practice. Owen, on the other hand, headed straight to his
office when he came in, setting his bulky black briefcase on his
mahogany desk.
Papers from previous nights work were scattered all over the desk as
Owen began to add more to the load. It may have been a tad cluttered
but he knew where every important statistic was and that's all that
mattered. Sitting down, he leaned back and sighed loudly as he put his
hands behind his head. A moment later, he was brought back to reality
by a damp towel landing on his head. Quickly pulling it off, he saw his
son laughing in the doorway dressing in a (hopefully) clean pair of gym
shorts and tank top. Owen gave him an annoyed look and tossed it back
at him, which he caught with ease.
"Don't worry Dad," his son reassured him, leaning against the
doorframe. "You'll catch that weirdo. There's never been a guy that you
couldn't catch."
"Thanks..." Owen muttered, "I just wish I knew why this bastard is
doing this. Honestly, what is there to gain? There's no ransom, no
explanation, nothing. None of this makes sense. What really stumps me
is there's no sign of the hormone treatments that are normally needed
for the gender change process to even work..."
Riley just shrugged and told his dad he'd get dinner started while he
sorted through his things. Owen didn't reply as he was was focused on
looking over his papers, trying to piece together how all the murders
were relevant to each other. The only piece of the puzzle he had was
that the bodies were genetically once male but turned female and that
each body was left with the same calling card, with the words 'Only
those certain can change...', which made no sense to him. What made
matters worse was whoever was committing these tragic crimes was very
good at covering their tracks, no fingerprints or anything.
"Only those certain can change... What in the fuck does that even mean?"
Owen said to himself, clearly annoyed that he couldn't put together the
pieces to this neverending puzzle.
He picked up his cellphone and called his friend Sarah to see if she
couldn't help piece anything together. She was still in their office
working when he called, finishing up some paperwork.
"Hey, what's up Owen?" she said while beginning to pack up her things.
"Still working on the case during the after hours?"
"Yeah, you know how I am. I won't stop until I've figured out every
piece of the puzzle. Anyway I've been looking at the words on the
calling cards that have been left behind. What do you think this person
means with 'Only those certain can change...'?" Owen asked, running his
right hand through his short cut black hair.
"Hmm... I'd have to think about it. It sounds like it's linked to those
boys they've been kidnapping and turning into girls. Beyond that I
can't think of anything off the top of my head," Sarah replied, finally
finished packing up her things and walking towards the exit.
"Alright. That's kind of what I was thinking too. If you want you can
stop by and have dinner with Riley and me," he paused and smiled to
himself, "he's cooking just to warn you."
"I like the sound of that! Beats going and picking up fast food for the
umpteenth time this week. I'll be there in a few!"
The call ended and Owen started going back over his papers in a vain
attempt to solve the case before dinner. Sarah was pulling up to the
house in her light blue Honda within twenty minutes and knocked on the
front door. Riley, being the closest to the kitchen, went to answer a
bit confused on why someone would be visiting at such a late hour but
was delighted to see it was Sarah and invited her in with a smile.
"Hey, Aunt Sarah! I take it Dad invited you over for dinner?" he asked,
going back to stirring the noodles in the boiling pot.
"Yeah, you know how he's always preoccupied with work. We're going to
go over the case some more after dinner", she said while sitting down
at the table, adjusting her skirt.
Riley laughed, "Whatever you say Aunt Sarah". He picking up the pot
with a couple hot pads and dumped the noodles into a strainer in the
sink.
Sarah had been Riley's "aunt" for as long as he could remember. He knew
she used to be a guy; it's not like she even hid that from anyone but
Riley didn't really mind. As long as his aunt was happy then he was
happy.
Owen, hearing the two chatting about how Riley was doing in school,
headed out of his office. As he started down the hall, he was able to
overhear them talking about the boys that were kidnaped. It was obvious
Sarah was trying to be cautious when asking him if he knew any of them
personally, but he hadn't heard anything about them other than them
being from other high schools.
The two continued their conversation as Owen walked in. He sat at the
table and idly listened as Riley finished stirring the cheese powder
into the pot. After a few moments, Owen realized he hasn't greeted
Sarah so he nodded towards her and she smiled back.
"Any more luck with the case?" Sarah asked, standing up to grab one of
the blue colored bowls that Riley had pulled out of the cupboard.
"Not even the slightest, but every criminal slips at some point. All we
can do at this point is wait and you know how much I hate that," Owen
replied.
"That's been his motto since I met him," Sarah laughed looking at
Riley.
Owen rolled his eyes at her and stood up to get some food. When all
three had their bowls full of macaroni and cheese, they sat down at the
table and dug in. Casually talking about the case and whatever was on
their minds, a normal night in the Wilkes house.

Meanwhile in the deepest part of Crimson City, a scraggly man was
walking through an abandoned warehouse he called home. The man had gone
by many names over the years, he was known as Dr. Rodriguez to some but
he called himself the Changeling. He walked through the darkened
warehouse, eventually stopping next to a table with a couple wheeled
work benches next to it. Each one had various items ranging from belted
straps to needles of various sizes.
Dr. Rodriguez flipped the switch on a lamp next to him, the lamp
quickly illuminated the darkness away, revealing a teenage boy strapped
to the table. The boy was fifteen years old, a student at Crimson High,
the very same school that Riley attended. Joseph was his name, he
struggled to move as the straps around his wrists and ankles were
tightened even more. Unable to speak due to a dirty rag stuffed in his
mouth, all he could do was glare at the man next to him.
"Heehee my little Josephine, you will be mine soon. Though I cannot
promise this will be painless nonetheless we shall meet again soon."
Dr. Rodriguez said running his hand through the boys blonde locks.
He tried to move his head away from the cold hand that ran through his
hair and down his cheek but couldn't. His bright blue eyes were almost
bloodshot from being kept awake for over a 24 hour period. The doctor
grabbed one of the needles off the workbench and flicked the end a few
times. A pink colored liquid with gold flakes filled the tube.
The doctor brought the needle close to Joseph's face and laughed as the
boy tried to squirm.
"Don't worry my boy, everyone reacts differently to my concoction. It
could be painless or mercifully painful, what do you think yours will
be?" he asked as he moved the needle away from his face.
Joseph tried to speak but was again muffled by the rag. Within the span
of seconds, he felt a slight poke as the needle went into his arm. The
crazy man was laughing as he pushed on the plunger slowly, watching the
pink gold flaked liquid enter into the boys vein.
"It won't be long before your body starts to change. Unlike the fools
who originally made this, I've enhanced it for my own special needs."
Dr. Rodriguez laughed as he rubbed the growing bulge in his pants.
Every transformation had started differently with each boy, so it was a
surprise to Dr. Rodriguez when the boy's hair started to lengthen and
thicken. Joseph started to weep as he could only watch his hair start
to get in his face. The doctor noticed and just smiled, he loved it
when they started to break.
The boys face started to soften as his eyes got bigger and his nose
shrunk. His cheeks rose slightly while his lips slightly puffed up,
making his feminine appearance more believable. If it weren't for his
clothes it wouldn't have been hard to say Joseph looked like a girl.
His neck slimmed down, adam's apple disappearing, which made him start
having a coughing fit. If it weren't for the doctor removing the gag,
he might have started choking.
"Ah! You fucking asshole, what the fuck are you doing to me?" Joseph
asked, each word making his voice rise until he sounded like a teenage
girl.
He instinctively tried to cover his mouth in shock at what his ears
were hearing, forgetting his arms were held down by the ever tightening
straps. His wrists were starting to hurt with how tight they were. His
attention was soon focused on his chest which was starting to feel
itchy and uncomfortable. Joseph tried to adjust his head so he could
see what was going on, he could just barely see the top of his chest.
As he tried to keep his head angled in its awkward position, he could
see his flat chest start to puff up. His nipples were aching as they
rubbed against his cotton tee, something he had never experienced in
his entire life. Next came one of the bigger changes, his chest started
to rise, first forming two bumps then growing and filling out.
"Hmm... I would have expected you to have bigger breasts but oh well. B
cups aren't bad but not my preference, my dear Josephine." Dr.
Rodriguez said as he traced around Joseph's breasts.
"Let me go you sick fuck! I don't want to be a girl!" Joseph yelled
before the rag was shoved back into his mouth.
Joseph tried to bite the probing fingers as Dr. Rodriguez forced the
rag back into his mouth. This made the doctor very angry and so he
backhanded him across the face.
"You vile little slut, you try and do that again and I'll make sure you
never see your family again!" he yelled as he went back to watching his
helpless victim weep.
All poor Joseph could do was silently cry, a mix between his left cheek
that stung and fear. More changes took place on him, his arms and hands
had shrunk dramatically, almost to a petite size. Next came his stomach
and waist, both had shrunk and caved in. He tried to not throw up as he
felt his rib cage shrink, squishing his vital organs briefly.
The pain in his stomach was starting to get to be too much for him. His
screams were muffled by the damp rag as his body shook in a tremor. Dr.
Rodriguez just smiled as he watched the poor boys body shake, slimming
down in various places and other parts thickening. The tremors lasted
for less than thirty seconds but to Joseph it felt like hours. He was
laying limp on the table, his butt providing a bit more cushion than
what he was used to, but that didn't change the fact that his body had
been feminized.
There was just one thing left and Joseph knew it was coming. It started
as a warm feeling just in his nether regions. This warm feeling stayed
for a bit and faded as if it never happened. Joseph was confused,
tired, and shaking as he suddenly felt what could only be described as
being kicked in the crotch. Again he tried to scream, feeling his penis
wither it's way back inside him, changing as it did so. The head had
shrunk till it was a just a little nub, the skin around it forming a
pair of vaginal lips.
Joseph now Josephine cried harder than she ever had before. Her entire
body had been changed, no longer a boy but a petite girl. The man next
to her was licking his lips in anticipation as he rubbed his hands
together.
"Aww yes... You look so cute my little Josephine... Now we can start
the real fun..." Dr. Rodriguez said with a devilish grin across his
face.

"So there's another body Owen, this would make number five..." a young
man said as he stood in front of Owen's desk.
"Son of a bitch... Was there anything left at the scene? Anything to
tell us who this sick fuck is?" Owen asked angrily, slamming his right
fist on his desk.
"Actually that's the good news sir, we have a name: Changeling." the
man replied trying to keep his cool in front of his boss.
Owen took a deep breath and told the man to leave. The young man who
everyone knew as Jeremy walked out of the office but not before Owen
thanking him. Finally the detective had something to work with, he
didn't care that the name sounded weird, it was something.
He immediately began looking up anything that could possibly have any
connections to that name. Nothing was coming up right away which he
figured would be the case, but it wasn't enough to deter him away. At
one point Sarah came by to tell him the boy/girl they found attended
the same high school as Riley. This concerned Owen and when he knew his
son would be at lunch he immediately called him.
Owen asked Riley if he knew this Joseph kid was. Riley had only seen
him a few times walking through the halls between classes, but that was
about it. Everyone was talking about it and the school was going to
have an assembly. Owen told his son to be careful and have Tammy watch
over him.
Riley just laughed and told his dad to have a fun rest of the day at
work before hanging up. Owen chuckled and said his goodbye before
hanging up too. He had a few minutes of silence to himself until it was
interrupted by Jeremy.
"Sir! The Channel 8 news team is out there wanting to get your thoughts
on the whole case." Jeremey practically shouted at him through his
cracked door.
"Tell them to go interview the Chief, I'm busy with my work to do some
stupid interview," Owen replied, annoyed that he was being interrupted
to be interviewed.
If there was one thing Owen hated more than anything was being caught
in the lime light. He had managed to get out of plenty of news
interviews over the years. In fact, the head reporter Danielle Keller
had almost turned it into a game to finally interview Owen.
"Ms. Keller specifically asked for you and the Chief is out on
business..." Jeremy said through the door before leaving to go back out
front.
"Figures. Ugh I guess I don't have much of a choice," he sighed to
himself.
He stood up from his chair and adjusted his uniform. Stepping outside
his office, he was blinded by camera flashes from other reporters. Owen
had to raise his arm to block the flashes, he looked across the giant
room to see what he was up against. His sights settled on Jeremy who
was standing off to the side, giving him a thumbs up. If looks could
kill then the young man would be very dead.
Danielle Keller came up and introduced herself as more camera flashes
went off. Owen wasn't really impressed and just rolled with the
motions. Ms. Keller was very attractive for a woman in her 30's,
something Owen couldn't deny. She had blonde shoulder length hair that
she usually curled.
She was wearing a pink dress with a little jacket that showed off her
girls quite a bit while still being appropriate. Owen and Riley would
always joke about how every year for the past few years, they got
bigger. That had sparked a debate between them that they never saw
themselves having.
"So I've been told by Chief Ferguson that you brave men and women have
gotten what could be a clue to solving these tragic events," Danielle
said as they went live.
"Uhh... Yes, yes a little card with the name Changeling was left with
the latest victim," Owen started to say while looking between the
camera and Danielle. "I've been working on figuring out just who this
pers-"
"How close are you to finding out the... the monster who is doing
this?" Danielle cut in.
"Hopefully soon" he replied, wishing this interview would end already.
The interview went on for another ten minutes and Owen was beyond happy
when it ended. Danielle was trying to talk to him some more, but he was
in the middle of trying to get back in his office. He normally wasn't
such a recluse, but Danielle was driving him nuts! To make matters
worse, she was trying to flirt with him.
He quickly apologized and made up an excuse to get back to his office.
Danielle made a bit of a pouty face but told him to have a good rest of
the day. Owen said his goodbyes and practically ran into his office to
get back to work.
His office was just how we had left it before going into the interview,
except his phone's answering machine light was blinking. Walking over
to his desk, he noticed a little red light flashing and picked up the
phone. Owen pressed the button and waited for the playback to start.
"Heehee this must be the famous Detective Wilkes office. I am
Changeling and I've been watching you for merely a few weeks now. If
you know what's good for everyone I suggest you leave me and my work
alone. Detective there will be severe consequences..." the playback had
stopped.
Owen had to stop himself from talking to the voice over the phone. He
set down the receiver and immediately sat down at his computer and
started back tracing the call. Within mere minutes, he had traced the
call to a pay phone in the downtown area, at least twenty minutes ago.
"Saw that coming..." he muttered to himself.
He made a recording of the eery voice from the answering machine and
finally hung up the phone. Owen put in an immediate request to see
camera footage within the past area in that specific area. It was in
front of some bar that usually had local bands playing in the evenings.
***
Riley had just hung up his phone from talking to his dad. He was lucky
that he could even hear him over the loud chatter of other students
talking. Everyone was in a panicky mood since the discovery of the
sophomore Joseph Sanders. In another hour, just about everyone in the
school including faculty were going to be attending an assembly in the
main gym.
He met up with his girlfriend Tamara and his best friend Carlos in
their usual spot. As soon as they were all together they headed outside
to grab something for lunch.
Carlos and Riley had been best friends for as long as they could
remember. He was of Latino descent, but you could never really tell
with how white his skin was. Not to mention he was kind of a nerd who
just happened to be on the swim team. Normally you would find him
wearing these big black rimmed glasses that matched the color of his
short kept hair. He considered himself decently attractive but not to
the level of Mr. Pretty Boy aka Riley.
The group headed off to a burger joint called Lazlo's that was nearby.
It was pretty popular amongst the juniors and seniors who were allowed
to go off campus for lunch. Fast and cheap burgers made it convenient
when you only had 45 minute for lunch.
As they walked in they were greeted by the owner, Mrs. O'Reilly who was
an elderly lady in her late 50's. She had owned the place since way
before Riley's dad was alive. Mrs. O'Reilly told her husband Mr.
O'Reilly to get three burgers made up for the three teens as they went
and found an empty booth.
Despite the fact that the building was very old, the O'Reilly's had
managed to keep it up to date with decor. Pictures of former students
hung up on the wall in various fashions and poses, mostly as they were
eating their food. Along with the pictures were odd items and other
memorabilia from the past.
The teens sat in the red colored booth as they rested their arms on the
wooden table. Mrs. O'Reilly made small talk with them as usual while
they waited for the food to finish. At one point, more students started
to come in and so Mrs. O'Reilly went off to greet them.
"I love Mrs. O'Reilly so much, she's just so adorable," Tammy said with
glee while holding Riley's hand.
The boys looked at each other with a weird look and started laughing.
Tammy just rolled her eyes and sighed. Riley turned and kissed her
cheek and smiled afterward. That usually did the trick and Tammy wasn't
as mad at him.
Their burgers were soon in front of them and they quickly dug into
them. Carlos was the first to finish his burger while Riley and Tammy
still had half left.
"Come on mi amigos, hurry up so we can get back to school," he said
trying to pressure them into finishing faster.
"Shut up Carlos, we'll finish when we finish," Riley said with a
mouthful of food.
Tammy just giggled as Riley practically spit his food while talking,
thankfully most of it landed on the table. She handed him a napkin
while continuing to eat her burger. It was Tammy who finished next
while Riley had a few bites left, instead of finishing he put his
burger on the plate.
Something was starting to bother him, but he wasn't quite sure what, he
looked around the place to see if he could figure out what it was. He
didn't see anything out of the ordinary besides a bunch of high
schoolers ordering/getting their food and heading on out back to the
school. Looking over at the other two, he shrugged and told them he was
full and that they should probably start heading back to the school if
they didn't want to be late. Carlos and Tammy agreed and all three
stood up and went to pay for their food before leaving.
As they walked out Riley was the last out the door and he turned back
and saw a man sitting in the very back looking in his direction. The
man smiled at him as Riley felt a cold chill run up his spine. Riley
quickly looked away and stepped outside trying not to think too hard
about that weird man.
The other two had made it about five feet from the building when they
noticed that Riley wasn't with them. He was just now catching up to
them since they stopped.
"Yo Riley what's up? You look like you've just seen a ghost or
something," Carlos asked noticing his friend's face was a bit pale.
"Huh?" Riley replied trying to play it off. "I'm fine, just have my
head up in the clouds is all."
"Well, you better keep your head grounded mister," Tammy giggled.
Tammy walked over to her boyfriend and took his hand in hers. Carlos
shrugged and walked next to Riley as they headed off back to school.
The trio casually talked as they walked back to the school,
occasionally Riley would turn his head and check behind him to make
sure that man wasn't following them. Up until they were walking through
the main doors did he feel somewhat safe.
He wasn't even entirely sure why he felt unsafe in the first place. The
man who was looking at him was just some random guy out on his lunch
and they happened to make eye contact is all. Riley tried his best to
not think about it. Lunch was about to end in the next couple minutes
and the three needed to walk through the massive crowd of people lining
up at either the West doors or the East doors. Unfortunately for the
group, Tammy's next class was in the East wing while both Riley and
Carlos had a class in the West wing.
The couple kissed before parting ways saying something that they'd meet
up after class to go to the assembly, right as the lunch bell rang.
Students from all over started walking to their respective doors,
talking aloud amongst their peers. Riley and Carlos got caught up in a
few lower classman pushing and shoving their way through the crowd as
they tried to get to their next class.
"Man these fucking lower classmen need to learn their place," Carlos
swore as he tried to grab hold of one of their backpacks and yank them
back.
"Hey, that was us a couple years ago, so don't sweat it, Carlos," Riley
replied as they kept walking, trying to avoid bumping into people as
best as they could.
About a minute later they were just passing through the two double
doors that led into the West Wing, thankfully Crimson High had a five
minute passing period between classes and after lunch. Riley had Econ
while Carlos had US History, both happened to be in the same hallway.
Tamara on the other hand had Chemistry right after lunch and all the
science based classes were in the East Wing. The boys parted ways as
Riley walked into his Econ class while Carlos' class was a way down the
hall. Tammy's caught up with a few of her friends and listened to their
mindless gossip as they all walked into Chem.

"Oh yes... the Detective's boy... such an amazing specimen..." a lowly voice
said. "I just have to make my move at the right moment... but for now I
shall wait..."
The man who was sitting in the back of the O'Reilly's diner was none
other than Dr. Rodriguez. It was a rare sight for him to come out into
the public eye like this. Nobody knew he existed which was more on his
part, but even he couldn't resist trying to find his next target.
Normally the doctor would wait a week or two before kidnapping his next
victim but that was till Riley caught his eye.
It would be a rather bold move on his part to kidnap the detective's
son, who was constantly looking for him. In fact right then and there
the doctor had made it his goal to eventually find a way to kidnap
Detective Owen's son. If he didn't do something soon all his work would
be for naught and that would make him very angry.

Owen and Sarah were out driving around Crimson City trying to find new
leads on just who this "Changeling" was and how he was able to change
these teenage boys. Both were shooting ideas back and forth, but none
were really conclusive. They weren't really in a hurry to be anywhere
so they headed off towards EWL Industries to see if they couldn't speak
with their CEO and get their thoughts on the matter.
EWL Industries was quite a ways south from downtown Crimson City and
traffic was pretty abysmal. Owen skipped going through downtown to
avoid the lunch rush, it'd take an extra couple minutes, but it was
better than having to deal with all the people downtown. Within a
twenty minute time frame they were parking in the parking garage
attached to a rather big building. The building was only about three
stories tall and had more of that industrialized appeal to it, almost
like a university's science building. Windows galore aligned the walls
of the building, showing off quite a number of offices and some labs.
The pair walked through the skywalk that connected the parking garage
to the main building, once inside the main building they were facing a
fancy looking elevator. The doors had a shiny finish to them and the
woodwork around them looked like it was made by an expert craftsmen.
They could only go down it seemed, there was only a button with a weird
looking down arrow in the middle. Sarah pressed the button while Owen
was busy staring at the woodwork.
"Quite a fancy place, wouldn't you agree?" Sarah asked Owen who was
still off in his own world.
When he didn't respond right away she nudged him with her elbow. He
about fell over as he came out of his trance, shaking his head quickly
and trying to regain his balance. Sarah just smiled at him and he gave
her a dirty look in return. The elevator dinged and one of the doors
slid open. Both casually walked in and saw a button for the first
floor, Sarah was closer so she reached over and pressed it till the
button lit up.
The doors were about to close when they heard someone shout to wait.
Owen stuck his hand through the elevator door to stop it from closing
all the way just as a young man came running by. He was huffing and
puffing as he walked into the elevator and thanked Owen and Sarah for
holding the elevator for him. The man was dressed in normal clothes but
had a name badge that read 'Matthew'.
"Thanks again, you don't know how much that means to me. I was almost
late getting back from lunch... Name's Matt... and you probably have read
my name tag already," he said with excitement at first but it quickly
faded.
"No problem, we're..." Sarah started to say before being cut off by this
Matt.
"Detective Wilkes and Agent Fletcher! I know exactly who you two are,
you've been looking into that murder case that's been plaguing the
city. And you're probably going to speak with Ms. Lams, right?" he
butted in.
"Er, yes that's correct. We were in the area and thought to get some
insight on what she thinks or something to help point us in the right
direction." Owen chimed in as the elevator doors opened.
Sarah and Owen started to walk out to go check in or whatever it was
they would have to do to speak with this Ms. Lams when Matt offered to
take them up to her office. The two looked at each other and agreed
that it'd be more professional to announce their presence then
spontaneously appear at her office door. Owen thanked him for the offer
and explained they'd rather go check in at the reception desk and go
from there. Matt nodded and stepped out to head off to the right, going
under a giant banner that read "Lab". Right as he was about to step
through the door at the end he turned and waved goodbye.
"Interesting kid," Owen said as he did a nod towards Matt in place of a
wave.
"Yeah, you got that right. Makes me wonder why he was so eager to take
us to his boss." Sarah replied as they walked up to an open reception
desk that was a ways from the elevators.
The receptionist was a girl who was most likely in her early 20's, cute
face, shoulder length brunette hair, and dressed in a white blouse and
a blue dress skirt. She was finishing up on a call when she noticed the
two walking up.
"Well hello, how may I help you?" she asked politely while looking at
the pair.
"Uhh yeah, we'd like to speak with your boss, a Ms. Lams?" Owen
replied.
"Mmm let's see do you two have an appointment with her or are you just
walk-ins?" the receptionist asked while looking towards her computer
monitor.
"We're with the CCPD, I'm Agent Fletcher and this is Detective Wilkes.
We'd like to speak with Ms. Lams to maybe get some answers to some
specific questions we have." Sarah chimed in, getting rather annoyed
that they've wasted this much time.
Sarah read the receptionist's name tag, Kelly was the girl's name. The
young gal hesitated a bit but picked up the phone and rang her boss to
let her know that she had some unexpected guests arriving shortly. She
pointed towards a different set of elevators to the far left and to
head up to the third floor and just follow the signs.
Owen thanked her and the two walked off towards the elevators, these
ones didn't take nearly as long to arrive on their floor as the other
one did. They stepped in and Owen pressed the button for the third
floor. Luckily for them the elevator made no stops and went directly to
the third floor which coincidentally was full of offices. Stepping out
of the elevator neither knew where to even start, all they knew was to
follow the signs. Only it would have been very helpful if there actual
signs they could go off of. Someone had walked by and pointed over to
the nearest wall which had a directory on it, clearly in a hurry for
something. They walked over to the directory attached to the wall and
looked down the long list of names to try and find the CEO.
It honestly took them a couple minutes, the directory had at least
fifty names attached to it. Finally they came across Ms. Lams name and
a little arrow pointing left, so they walked down the hallway that was
to their left. Every door had a name of someone and none matched who
they were looking for, that is until they came across the final door at
the very end of the hallway.
"Oh, thank God we found it. This was starting to get ridiculous," Owen
muttered as they reached the door that read 'Emmi Lams - CEO'.
"Yeah, but what do you expect with such a big company? Sarah replied
adjusting her hair so it was out of her face and trying to look more
presentable.
Owen looked over at her like "are you serious?" as he reached over to
the door. Before he could even knock a voice from inside told them to
come in. The pair looked at each other with weird looks but did as they
were told and walked in. As they walked into the office they noticed
that it was smaller than what you would think belonged to a CEO but
overall it looked very professional. On one wall was a giant bookcase
that was full of books and other nick nacks and the wall across had
portraits of various people, probably relatives or friends of this
person.
Right across from the pair was a woman who was definitely younger than
them sitting at a giant desk. The woman was looking over some papers
and signing others as she looked up and noticed her unexpected guests.
Shoulder length blonde hair, a mature face, and from what Owen could
tell she had a very slim figure in the light gray business attire she
was wearing.
"Well come on in, don't be shy," she said in a sweet voice, gesturing
towards the two leather chairs placed in front of her desk.
"We're..." Owen started to say before the woman cut in and took over.
"Agent Fletcher and Detective Wilkes, you're here to ask me questions
about the ongoing murder case that has been going on for a couple
months now. You think my company might have something to do with the
transformations and are here to ask me questions, right?" she said
looking down at some more papers.
"Uhh yes," Sarah replied almost shocked that she knew so much without
either saying anything. "Some of our lab test results have come up that
a certain chemical/drug has been used and the only place to get such a
thing is from EWL Industries."
"That's nye impossible Agent Fletcher, nobody can break in and steal
any of our chemical compounds. They are heavily monitored and under
watchful eyes 24/7, now if you don't mind can we get to some more
important questions?" the woman said, clearly annoyed that she was
being bothered by these two.
"Well, whoever is doing this must have some knowledge of what you use.
Besides my question is how on earth is it possible to turn these young
boys into girls without the need of hormone treatments like yours
requires?" Owen asked trying to defuse the situation.
"That's actually a good question Detective Wilkes. The human body can
only handle so much stress being applied to it at one time, introducing
a sudden change such as having your gender changed is more than enough
and our bodies just cannot handle such a change right away. Such a huge
change in hormonal balance is enough to cause permanent damage to a
person, which is why we require someone has at least undergone a year's
worth of hormonal transplants to help with the 'shock' the body
experiences. Whoever has engineered this new 'drug' should be commended
for doing what I have been unable to do."
"Okay, so what you're telling me is you have no clue how they'd be able
to re-engineer your own drug into something better?"
"Indeed, now if you two will excuse me I have some important business
to attend,"
She waved her hand in a shooing motion while going back to looking at
her papers. Neither Owen or Sarah wanted to piss off the CEO of this
rather big company so they both stood up from their seats.
"Thank you for your time, Ms. Lams," Owen said as he started to walk
towards the door.
"When we meet again Detective Wilkes, please call me Emmi," she replied
looking up at him with deep blue eyes.
Owen was confused but before he could even say anything Sarah was
practically pushing him out the door. Emmi Lams leaned back in her
chair and watched them leave, Sarah closing the door behind them. She
knew she'd be expecting Owen to come back in a couple weeks time, only
on worse terms. Once she heard the footsteps fade away she wrote a note
to herself to remind her about Owen and just why she'd be seeing him.
"Well, that was a waste of time," Sarah sighed tieing her strawberry
blonde hair into a ponytail.
"Did you really expect anything from the CEO? Of course, she wasn't
going to tell us a whole lot and I'm a bit skeptical about coming back
to visit." Owen replied.
"She was pretty nice compared to some of these business heads we've
chatted with over the years. At least she didn't throw us out as soon
as she knew who we were," Sarah laughed remembering past events.
Owen joined in and was chuckling as he remembered a time they had just
barely made it through the front doors and were already trying to be
escorted out the building, those were the ones that usually had
something to hide and were quickly busted. They were walking through
the reception area when the receptionist, Kelly waved to them as they
passed. Owen was busy looking into his phone for something and Sarah
did a half wave as they walked towards the elevator they needed.
Finally back in the parking garage, Owen had made a few calls to a few
people on his team to start doing a bit more digging into EWL
Industries. Soon they were out of the garage and back on the streets of
Crimson City, heading back to their main headquarters. The drive back
was mostly silent between Owen and Sarah which wasn't usually the case,
usually they were talking the entire drive. Both were caught up in
their own thoughts, Owen wanting to capture this "Changeling" person
and hoping his son was safe, not that he didn't think his football star
of a son couldn't handle himself. His thoughts drifted back towards
that voicemail left on his answering machine and scoffed, empty threats
didn't phase him.
Sarah was just thinking of making a trip down to the lab when they got
back to see if anything had been discovered. Without much help from the
only source they could remotely use, they were basically stuck on their
own. Sure they could get a warrant to do a search but Sarah could
easily tell when a hotshot was bluffing and she had a feeling they
wouldn't get very far.
Eventually they were back at their office, which was just off the CCPD
station, Owen walked into his office while Sarah went down to the lab
which conveniently located in the basement.

The school bell had rang, sixth period was over, students and teachers
were making their way to the main gym for the assembly. Originally they
were going to have it in their massive auditorium but them seating
became a factor and quickly decided the main gym would be better. Riley
and Carlos had met up in the hallway where their classes were, they
weren't in a huge hurry to get to this assembly but as usual Riley
wanted to be seated next to Tamara.
Tamara was standing in their normal meeting spot waiting for her two
favorite knuckleheads to come out of the West Wing. As she waited a few
of her friends tried to get her to go sit with them but she was keen on
waiting for Riley and Carlos, who just happened to be walking towards
her at that very moment. It wasn't very difficult to spot the oddball
pair, you had Riley who was unmistakable and then Carlos and his big
glasses which stood out like a sore thumb. She couldn't help but smile
as they finally caught up with her and Riley took her hand in his.
All three followed the rest of the crowd into the gym, going through
the south doors and down the steps onto the unfolded bleacher seats.
They found a few empty seats near the very bottom so they trudged down
the steel stairs to them, having to pass by quite a few people who were
already sitting. Finally sitting down the three could barely hear
themselves talk over the echo's of everyone else talking.
The assembly wasn't going to start for another ten minutes, to give
people enough time to make it in and get settled. Everyone was either
talking or on their phone as they waited, it was better than just
sitting there bored.
In typical teenager fashion, there were a few rowdy students who didn't
want to attend the assembly so they were making quite a fuss. Riley
scanned the crowd to see if he could see any other friends of his
amongst the crowd. He did see a few students trying to keep it together
as they looked down at the memorial that they had for Joseph. His
school picture had been enlarged into a poster to show his bright
smiling face.
He did see a couple of his friends in a few places, but they were busy
talking with other people or engrossed in their phone. Tammy squeezed
his hand, making him turn his head to look at her and smiled. How could
someone like him end up with such a great girl like Tammy?
Riley leaned in and gave her a quick kiss before one of the teachers
told him to hold off on the PDA while they were in the gymnasium. The
teenager laughed it off and said he would, by then the assembly was
about to start.
Their principal went up to the microphone next to the giant picture and
did a few sound checks before starting his speech.
"Today we are here to remember a fellow student and friend. Joseph
Sanders was taken from us far too soon from a horrible monster. Not
only are we here to remember a fellow Cardinal, but to make sure all of
our students and staff know how to be extra careful. As you may know
this sick individual only targets teenage boys and thus it is up to
your teachers and other staff to make sure you're safe." the principal
started his speech.
A few students booed and wolf whistled, just being overall
disrespectful. They were removed rather quickly as the principal picked
back up where he started. He wanted to make sure the boys knew how to
protect themselves and where they could go if they need help. This
dragged on for a few more minutes before the big announcement came.
"It has come to a vote amongst the staff that for the safety of our
students, all boys in 11th and 12th grade will not be allowed to leave
for lunch..."
Almost all the junior and senior boys stood up and started yelling all
kinds of things. Some were even starting to throw things down at the
principal. It was just a huge mess for everyone.
Riley and Carlos were a bit upset but not to the extremes some of the
other guys were taking it. That meant no more eating lunch at
O'Reilly's Diner which was a huge bummer.
"Unless you're in a group!" the principal yelled into the microphone
over the crowd.
Only a handful of the student body heard that last bit as staff and
teachers were trying to calm down the erupting hoard of students. It
was a complete disaster and the principal could only try and help stop
the feud. After a good twenty minutes things were getting better, quite
a few students had joined in to help their fellow teachers, including
the trio. Once things had finally settled the principal apologized and
restated the last part.
The students were much happier to hear that and even a few cheered. The
assembly didn't last much longer and since there were only thirty
minutes left of school the principal decided to let everyone out early
except for those who had caused so many problems. Everybody cheered and
were getting ready to leave the gym in a somewhat orderly fashion.
Riley held onto Tammy's hand who in turn grabbed Carlos as they
followed people out the many exits. They like everyone else went to
their lockers to grab their stuff and get out of the school as fast as
possible. It only took mere minutes before all three met up in their
"spot" and walked out the front doors together.
The three walked towards Riley's little Honda that his dad had gotten
him for getting his license. It had a few rust spots but other than
that it was a great starter car for a teenager. Riley hopped into the
driver side after manually unlocking the door with his key and unlocked
the doors the other two were standing by. Tammy had called shotgun as
they walked out the doors way before Carlos had even thought of it.
"You win this round Tam," he sneered as he hopped in the backseat
behind Riley.
"Aww don't be such a sore loser. You weren't even thinking about it
until after I called shotgun." Tammy replied with a smirk.
Riley just rolled his eyes as he started up the car. His mind was going
elsewhere as he looked behind him to make sure nobody was coming.
Carlos told him he was clear on both sides so Riley backed up and got
the car turned, switching it over to drive and pressing on the gas
pedal. The car lurched forward and with a creak it started moving.
They headed off towards Riley's house to do homework and just hang out
as usual. Riley handed his phone over to Tammy and asked her to text
his dad that they were on their way to the house. She took the phone
and within mere seconds had the message sent. Carlos and Riley never
understood how girls could text so fast, but it had to have been an
evolutionary trait.
"Your dad says hi, by the way," she giggled.
Tammy held onto his phone till they pulled up into the driveway. Carlos
was the first out of the car with his backpack slung over his shoulder.
Riley turned off the engine and got out, followed by Tammy. All three
walked towards the front door and headed on inside as soon as Riley
unlocked the door.
Owen had a semi-strict policy that all three would stay in the
kitchen/dining room to do their homework until he got home. So they all
opened their backpacks and took out the books and notebooks stuffed
inside. Within seconds, the entire dining room table was covered with
their things. Riley started up on his math homework, being in Pre-Cal
he needed more than enough time. Carlos was finishing up some take home
quiz for his history class while Tammy was doing a mix of helping Riley
with some equations and working on some Spanish.
***
Owen had just received a text from his son's phone letting him know
that they were on their way to the house. He chuckled and figured it
was Tamara sending it to him since Riley would have been driving by
now. Sending off a quick reply with 'Say hi to Riley for me', he went
back to trying to decipher the calling card that had been eating up
most of his time. Whoever was behind the murders clearly wanted to be
known but yet left nothing else other than a name.
The detective leaned back into his chair and rested his hands behind
his head, taking a deep breath of air as he tried to figure out at
least something. First the calling cards and then the voicemail, what
else was going to happen?
Little did he know his question was about to be answered. He received a
phone call from one of the other agents letting him know that they ran
through a hunch they had and discovered gold. While looking into a
different case altogether, this agent ended up in the long-abandoned
industrial district where all the empty warehouses were. After doing
some checking around, they accidently stumbled upon a surgical table in
the middle of one of the warehouses. The agent immediately called in
backup and called Owen to let him know.
Owen barely said a word as he jumped out of his chair with excitement.
He told the agent to send him the coordinates and he'd be over as soon
as possible. This was exactly the kind of lead the detective needed to
help get the case back on track. Quickly hanging up the phone, he
called Sarah to let her know the news and that they were immediately
going. Sarah barely had time to say anything as Owen had hung up and
was at her desk within a minute. She could only laugh to herself, there
was no stopping Owen when he was like this. But she couldn't blame him,
they needed this break in the case to hopefully start getting
somewhere.
She had time to grab her badge and gun before they were heading out to
Owen's car. Soon they were weaving in and out of traffic through the
bustling streets of Crimson City to the industrial district. While
obeying traffic laws the trip to the industrial district took about
twenty-five minutes give or take. As they pulled up where all the
warehouses were, the entire scene was blocked off with caution tape.
Police cruisers and vans were parked all over, so Owen parked the car
nearby. They both got out and started walking towards the taped off
area when one of the newer police officers told them they couldn't be
here.
Both flashed their badges and walked under the tape without saying a
word, the new recruit didn't say anything after. Sarah loved doing that
to people, showing off their badge was more than enough to shut someone
up. Owen had walked over to talk to the man who called him. Agent
Carter was more than happy to talk to him as he lead the way into the
warehouse.
"So we've found some interesting pieces to this puzzle," he started as
they walked. "We've done some on hand chemical tests and though nothing
has come up yet, I have a good feeling that whatever residue was left
will bring good results."
They walked close to the operating table that was illuminated by the
dimming sunlight. Owen grabbed a pair of plastic gloves and put them on
before dragging a finger across what appeared to be a pinkish residue
left on the table. Bringing it up close to his face he could make out a
few golden flakes, he studied it for a bit before ripping off his
gloves and telling Agent Carter to get as much as they could to send
off to the lab.
Owen walked around the table examining everything his eyes laid on. He
noticed a workbench way off to the side and walked over to it.
"Has anyone checked this out yet?" Owen asked to no one in particular.
"Uhh no, never noticed it until now," someone responded as they walked
over to where Owen was standing.
On the workbench was an obviously used needle that looked like it still
had something in it. Carefully picking it up he tried to see what was
still in it. Unable to really tell he put the needle in an evidence bag
and handed it off. Owen looked over things one last time, making sure
he didn't miss anything.
After triple checking and talking to a few people, including Sarah, he
was ready to head back to get the paperwork ready. Sarah was looking
for any signs of blood or anything that might help them identify this
"Changeling" when Owen was talking to her. Whoever this person was, was
very clever in not leaving a trace.
The two walked out of the warehouse and back to Owen's car, left where
they had parked. They talked about what they had found and compared
notes as they eventually drove back to HQ. Owen had texted his son
letting him know the good news as he and Sarah had walked downstairs to
the lab. As they reached the final steps they both stopped at the metal
double doors that led into the lab area. They walked through and were
greeted by a few of the lab assistants who were working on a few
projects from other cases.
Owen stopped by one of them and set down the two evidence bags he had,
one with the needle and the other. He explained what they had found at
the scene and that they needed some tests done as soon as possible. The
lab assistants were a bit confused but when Owen told them it was about
the murder case they immediately went to work. The head of the lab, an
older gentleman by the name of Robert assured Owen and Sarah that they
would do their best and in hope get even closer to figuring out who the
murderer is.
They chatted for a bit longer until Owen had received a call that there
was some letter with his name on it waiting for him. Confused he walked
up back to the front desk and on the counter was an envelope. It had
his name on the front in scribbled letters as if someone was writing
his name rather quickly.
Opening the envelope he pulled out a folded piece of paper, after
unfolding it he saw there was a bit of writing on the page. He quickly
read the message when he dropped the paper and immediately called his
son.
The letter was from the man who called himself Changeling, in it he
described that since they found his precious lab he was going to take
something precious of Owen's. Attached to the letter was a picture of
their home with a timestamp of a couple hours ago.
"Riley it's Dad, I want you to lock the doors and close any curtains.
Don't worry about it just do as I say, make sure Carlos and Tamara stay
with you. I'm on my way home now!" Owen practically shouted as his son
questioned him over the phone.
Owen hung up on his son and called Sarah to let her know the situation
and that he would need backup. He was outside and to his car in just a
few strides, whoever this person was, Owen would not let them touch his
son. In less than ten minutes, Owen was pulling up into the driveway
and quickly got out, his left hand held the gun attached to his hip.
He slowly unlocked the door and announced it was him coming in. Peeking
in through the door, he saw no one was in the kitchen or dining room so
he fully stepped into the house. Locking the door behind him, he called
out for Riley.
Riley yelled back that he was in the living room and demanded to know
what the hell was going on. Owen walked into the living room where the
three teens were, notebooks in laps and books spread out among them.
Owen asked to speak with his son in the kitchen real quick. When they
both were in the kitchen he explained to his son the situation and that
a few police officers were on the way. Just as he finished his
explanation red and blue lights could be seen flashing through the
dining room curtains. Riley was starting to panic a bit and his dad
just told him to stay calm and keep doing his homework while he went to
go talk to his fellow officers.
Riley just nodded, quite shaken up that this person his dad was after
was watching them. He walked back into the living room and sat down
next to Tammy on the couch.
As his son went back into the living room, Owen stepped outside to meet
with the few officers standing there. Sarah had just pulled up and
quickly got out of her car. She passed Owen and went inside the house
to keep an eye on the teens. A few more police officers arrived while
the rest were doing a ten block perimeter around the house.
Thirty minutes had passed and nobody was able to find anything. Owen
was getting frustrated and tried to keep his cool so he wasn't going
off on someone. It wasn't the first time someone had threatened his
family, but it was something he didn't take too kindly. A couple
officers were stationed to keep doing a perimeter check every hour to
make sure nothing happened.
Owen was instructed to stay inside and keep a watchful eye on his son
till morning. As for Carlos and Tamara, they would be taken home by
police officers to make sure they were safe. The Wilkes family was in
for quite the night.
***
"So can you explain better what the hell is going on?" Riley asked
Sarah as she sat down at the dining room table.
"The person we're after was near the house and we think they're after
you," she replied looking through the closed curtains. "Your dad got a
letter with a threat and a timestamped picture of the house from just a
few hours ago."
"Oh..." Riley replied. Tammy hugged him tightly and told him it'd be
alright. Carlos gave him a fist bump and said the same.
Sarah smiled at the three teens; if they only knew just how severe the
situation was. As the four chatted some more there was a knock at the
door and Sarah went to answer it. It was one of the police officers,
she explained that they were going to take the persons called Carlos
and Tamara home.
Both teens protested, neither wanting to leave Riley by himself if some
lunatic was on the loose.
"Uhh we're staying here, Miss, besides if anyone tries to get to Riley
they'll have to go through me." Carlos flexed his arms trying to show
off his very little muscle.
"Hehe yeah, funny. One kid but you're coming with us whether you like
it or not. Now please don't make this a headache and just follow me,"
she replied, clearly not in the mood to deal with a teenager's
shenanigans.
"Well, you heard the cop lady, I don't wanna be arrested so I'll see
you tomorrow bro!" Carlos said as he pulled Riley into a shoulder hug.
"Yeah man," Riley replied, wishing that they could stick around to keep
him company.
Next to go was Tammy, who refused to leave without giving her boyfriend
a long drawn out kiss and hugging him tightly. Sarah coughed trying to
say that they could stop any time now. Tammy finally pulled herself
away from Riley and left with the other police officer standing by the
front door. Riley felt a bit alone but knew he still had his Aunt Sarah
to keep him company, at least until his dad was done.
Without much else to do Riley continued with his homework, Sarah had
sat down on the recliner and casually chatted with him, asking
questions about how school was going and what he had for homework.
Riley had answered every single question despite trying to engross
himself with his homework and not think about the situation at hand. It
was something he was sorta good at, at least since his mom had passed.
That was quite a hard time for him, he was only 12 at the time but to
see his mom, whom he shared a close relationship with, finally move on
after so much pain was hard on both him and his dad. He tried to keep
his feelings to himself, even when he had Tammy who would try and pick
and pry at him to know how he was feeling. Despite this Riley felt like
he was a normal teenager, going through the motions of high school,
playing football, and maybe playing for the UNCC football team when he
got into college.
He got lost in his thoughts as he usually did when he dwelled on his
past like that. It wasn't until his dad was calling his name that he
snapped out of it and looked up to see his dad frowning at him.
"You alright Rye?" Owen asked, giving his son a concerned look.
Riley knew his dad never called him by his nickname unless he really
thought something was bothering him. The teen just shrugged his
shoulders and went back to looking at his books. Owen sighed and Sarah
took the hint and stood up, walking over to him to talk.
While the adults were chatting about whatever Riley took the
opportunity to go to his room. He pulled out his phone and texted both
Carlos and Tammy. Carlos responded with a selfie of him in the
passenger's seat of the police cruiser and his bright big smile. Tammy
didn't respond until about twenty minutes later, which was unusual
since she was normally very quick to text back.
They texted back and forth most of the night until Riley was called
down for dinner. Owen had ordered pizza from one of the many pizza
joints and a couple 2-liters of their favorite soda. He must have had a
weird look on his face because his dad just laughed and told him it was
a special occasion.
"So being watched is a special occasion?" Riley asked a bit annoyed
with how upbeat his dad seemed. The whole situation bothered him and he
figured his dad was just trying to seem happy for his sake.
"Uhh yeah, I didn't feel like cooking either. So pizza it is," Owen
replied. He watched his son trudge his way to the dining room table and
sit down. Something was bothering him and he wanted his son to open up
but didn't want to push him too hard.
"So... What's been ailing you? You're not your upbeat self," Owen
asked.
"This whole murder case, now this, this psycho is watching us!" Riley
shouted without thinking. He clammed up real quick after that sudden
outburst. Owen was taken back a bit, his son never yelled like that,
especially towards him.
"Rye, I know how you feel, I don't like this either. Whoever is out
there is upset his little hideout was discovered and is now trying to
take out his anger on me."
Riley opened his mouth to speak but whatever words he had on the tip of
his tongue, he decided against using them. Instead, he grabbed a slice
of the meat lovers pizza and put it on a paper plate. Owen grabbed a
couple slices of the same pizza and put them on his plate. Afterward,
he poured himself some Mountain Dew into a glass full of ice.
"I wish they'd refrigerate these things, ya know?" Owen said hoping to
lighten the sour mood.
His son shrugged and slowly started to eat his pizza. The night
continued on, both of the Wilkes weren't in great moods for their own
reasons. Riley had gone off to bed a few hours later while Owen was in
his office, looking over the envelope he had kept in his pocket.
The message had been typed so there was no way to distinguish it from
anything. It was the picture attached that bothered Owen the most.
Looking at it a bit longer, he put the paper into the scanner on his
desk and had it uploaded to his computer. Once there he opened it up
and zoomed in on the picture. Something had caught his eye and he
wanted to make sure it was what he thought.
With the image zoomed in, it showed the dining room windows and Owen
could easily make out his son sitting there laughing at something. Owen
slammed his fist onto his desk in anger, this freak's next target was
his son. At the same time, Owen felt a bit of fear as his mind
wandered, what if he couldn't protect his boy?
***
It had been a couple of weeks later, there were no more threatening
decrypted messages or any signs of the Changeling. This didn't stop
Owen's from keeping up with the investigation. He was determined more
than ever to find this Changeling and finally put an end to this long
drawn out case. Those who worked in the lab weren't any closer to
finding out what exactly made up the drug that was inside the needle.
The detective was sitting in his office reading the paper, crime had
been at an all time low this year so far then the murders. Owen was
hoping he'd hear some good news from the lab today, but he figured it'd
be very unlikely. His team was doing their best and using whatever
resources they could get their ha
