August 26, 1983, McKinley, Ohio

“Told you!” Clarissa laughed as she and I relaxed in my room after breakfast.

“They sat with us at breakfast,” I said, then grinned, “So what?”

“Even YOU aren’t that clueless, Petrovich!”

“Just because Rebekah said she thought I fingered the frets expertly when I played the guitar?”

“And she batted her eyelashes and flipped her hair. Short of asking you to fuck her, she couldn’t BE any clearer about what she wanted.”

“Well, she’ll need to find a different instrument to play,” I replied with a smirk. “You know darn well that’s not my type.”

Clarissa laughed, “Cute! Too much like Milena?”

“Not by the time we actually got together,” I replied. “By the time of the threesome, Milena had already changed. And what’s with you encouraging me to be with other girls? Are you trying to push me away?”

“No! I was teasing about Rebekah. I do think you should get to know Kimiko.”

“I still have to decide what to do about Kristin,” I replied.

“Because of me?”

“Partly; but also because of me.”

“Petrovich, you know I’ll do it if you ask me to.”

“And you know I can never ask.”

“I know,” Clarissa said. “Maybe we should take the more difficult case first.”

“Angie? I don’t think that’s too difficult at this point. I’ll give her rides to church and we’ll go to karate with Robby and Lee. If she wants to run with me, that’s fine, but except for when the gang is together, I don’t plan to hang out with her. It would send the wrong message and give her false hope.”

“I think you’re right. You’re going to see Tasha tomorrow, right?”

“Yes. It’s her eighteenth birthday.”

“And she’s going to ask for YOU as her present?” Clarissa smirked.

I chuckled, “She already did! But I think her dad might have something to say on that matter! And you know she and I agreed we’d have our talk once she graduated.”

“And I guess Maggie is, well, on hold?”

“I guess. I have no clue what to do about that. When I’m home for Labor Day weekend, I can talk with my sister and her friends and see, but I’m guessing nothing is possible there. And speaking of going home for Labor Day, you’re coming with me. You aren’t staying here!”

“And how are you going to explain your lesbian friend sleeping in your bed?”

“I’m not, because I’ll be sleeping on the couch in the basement. The last thing I want to do is send the wrong message to my parents. But that doesn’t mean no cuddling.”

“Good,” Clarissa replied with a soft smile. “So, back to McKinley, then. You and Kristin were compatible, and neither of you is thinking it’s anything other than keeping each other warm at night. Oh, and orgasms. Lots of them!”

I laughed, “And how would YOU know?”

“I’m assuming that if that wasn’t the case, she’d have dumped you long ago!”

“You’re real sweetheart, Svetlana Yakovovna!”

“What can I say?” she grinned, sticking her tongue out at me.

“Is that an offer?” I smirked.

“Do you want it to be an offer?”

“Do you want me to want it to be an offer?”

“You’re such a «дурня»!”

“I may be a goofball, but you didn’t answer the question!”

“And what offer was I making?”

“What offer did you think I thought you were making?”

Clarissa laughed, “Are you going to turn every question around like that?”

“The ones I can!”

“Ask me for what you want, Mike.”

“I want you to be my best friend.”

“You don’t follow directions very well, do you?”

“You know why I can’t ask, Lissa.”

“I know, and that’s why I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

There was a knock at the door and I called out for whomever it was to enter.

“Mike? Do you remember me? José?”

“Sure. What can I do for you?”

“I play guitar and I wondered if you might want to jam sometime.”

“That would be cool!” Clarissa declared.

“There you have it,” I grinned. “My best friend just agreed on my behalf. What do you play?”

“A lot of the same stuff you do, but I also play a lot of Latin American and Spanish love songs. I’ll teach you some if you want.”

“Sure. What can I teach you in return?”

“How to sing better! You have perfect pitch!”

“I’m not sure I’m qualified to give voice lessons, but we could talk to my friend Milena and maybe she can give me some pointers on how to help you.”

“She’s the girl from the concert?”

“Yes. She’s working on her PhD and is a music lecturer here. Her mom is a professor.”

“I think I came to the right place!”

“What’s your major?”

“The ever-popular ‘undeclared’. I’m not sure which science I want, so I’m doing the core courses and then I’ll decide between biology, chemistry, and physics. Eventually I’ll get a Master’s and PhD. I want to do research and teach.”

“We’re both biochem majors,” Clarissa said. “Pre-med.”

“Psychos, then,” José grinned.

“Exactly!” I laughed. “Why don’t we meet tonight after dinner. Bring your guitar here. I’ll talk to Milena and have her drop by.”

“Excellent! Thanks! Later!”

“Later!”

He left, closing the door behind him.

“Looks like you found a new friend,” Clarissa said. “That’s good!”

“Speaking of friends, when will Glenda be back?”

“About noon tomorrow. When are you leaving for West Monroe?”

“I suppose it depends on if you want me with you?”

“In your DREAMS!” Clarissa laughed.

“I meant so you aren’t alone until she arrives, you «говнюк»!”

“Wow! You usually reserve ‘shithead’ for people like Dean Parker or that nut job psychiatrist in Columbus!”

“I’m worried about you because of what happened with your parents.”

“Mike,” she said, taking my hand. “I promise I’ll be OK for a few hours if you leave before Glenda arrives.”

“I don’t have to be at Tasha’s until dinner. I was going to stop home and see my parents for an hour or so, then go to Vespers. Dinner is after Vespers. The short version is that I can stay until at least 3:00pm. Once you and Glenda disappear to get reacquainted, I’ll head to my parents’ house. I figured you wouldn’t spend the night with me tomorrow night. And that is not me complaining, Clarissa, just so we’re clear.”

She smirked, “For a fairly clueless guy, you do a decent job of taking care of me.”

“Gee, thanks,” I deadpanned.

“Come on, let’s go buy our books.”

We left my room and walked to the campus bookstore where, as we had four previous times, we paid outrageous prices for books on which the campus bookstore had a monopoly. I wouldn’t have felt quite as much outrage over the prices if I thought the authors received a significant share of the purchase price, but I knew that concept was laughable.

“We aren’t done yet, either,” Clarissa groused. “We have to pay for lab coats and goggles, too.”

“It’s funny, but we get to wear long lab coats working in the lab, but we’ll have short ones when we’re in medical school.”

“Different traditions. Come on, let’s drop our books at the dorm, then go see the secretary in the biology department.”

We walked back to the dorm and left our books in my room, then walked over to the science building and went to the biology office. May, the secretary who I guessed was about my mom’s age, handed us each a lab coat wrapped in plastic, and a pair of goggles in a box. We each wrote a check for the cost, thanked her, then headed back to the dorm.

“Wanna play doctor?” I smirked when we walked into my room.

“So you can use your probe on me, Doctor Pig?” she smirked.

“Why yes,” I said with a leer, “a very deep, and thorough probing!”

“Of multiple orifices?”

“But of course! And I’d need to repeat those probes regularly to make sure you weren’t developing any new symptoms!”

“And just what are you probing for, Doctor Pig?”

“Temperature, for one thing.”

“Oral, vaginal, and anal?” she smirked.

“A doctor does have to be thorough!”

“You? Right!”

“That sounds suspiciously like a dare,” I said, smirking and leering.

“And if it is?”

“You’ll have to make it explicit, you hussy!”

“Oh, right, because asking if you were going to put your probe in my butt wasn’t explicit enough?”

“The DARE, you «глупец»!” I laughed.

“Hey! You can’t use my word for you!”

“Sure I can!”

“And if I were to dare you?” she asked, with an arched eyebrow.

“Hey, that’s MY tactic!”

“You just called ME a blockhead, so turnabout is fair play!”

“Lissa,” I said carefully, “if we’re not careful, we might tease each other into something we might regret.”

“Oh sure, spoil the fun mood and get all serious on me.”

“You were about to dare me, weren’t you?”

She nodded, “A double-dog dare.”

“And then?”

“I thought that was obvious!”

“I meant afterwards?”

She sagged back on the couch, “I don’t know.”

“Which could leave a total mess. Be with your girlfriend tomorrow and maybe that will take the edge off.”

“You think I’m horny?”

“Perhaps,” I grinned. “But I think you’re pushing a bit too hard.”

“Are you pushing back because of you or because of me?”

“Because of US,” I said, taking her hand. “I love you Lissa, and the last thing I want to do is mess things up.”

“I think you’re right. Cuddle me?”

I held out my arms and Clarissa moved to my lap. I put my arms around her and held her close. She sighed deeply, put her head on my shoulder, and snuggled close. We cuddled for about thirty minutes, then headed to Milena’s house to hang out with her. I asked her about coming to the dorm to work with José and me, and she agreed.

That evening, after dinner, José, Milena, and I decided to sit in the common area to ‘jam’, as José had suggested.

“José,” Milena asked, “have you played with anyone before?”

“No,” he replied. “Well, other than with my instructor and with a friend at family parties, you know, for fun. Nothing like giving a concert like you did!”

“I assume you have something in your folder that has both lead and rhythm parts?”

“Yes.”

“OK. Pick something you know very well, please.”

“It has to be Estudio en Mi de Rubira, but you might know it as Romance de amour,” he said.

He took some sheet music from his folder and Milena asked him to play through it, while I followed along simply reading the rhythm part. When he finished I asked him to play once more. As he went through it, I fingered the chords, and then the third time, I played along with him.

“Wow,” he said when we finished, “you just picked that up!”

“I’ve been taking lessons from Milena’s mom, and I play with Milena quite a bit.”

Milena and Clarissa looked at each other, smirked, then broke up laughing.

“Ignore the peanut gallery,” I chuckled. “Let’s try that again.”

We played through it again, and as we finished, several Freshmen came into the common area, or lounge as they had begun calling it.

“What else do you have?” I asked.

“Let’s try Piel Canela,” José replied. “I’ll sing, and perhaps you can give me some pointers.”

“You’ll have to forgive my non-existent Spanish,” I replied.

“It means ‘Cinnamon Skin’. It’s a love song. The chorus, in English, is something like...

I care about you, and you, and you
And only you, and you, and you
I care about you, and you, and you
And nobody but you

but I don’t see anyone here with cinnamon skin to sing to.”

“Sing to me!” Rebekah said from behind us.

Milena, Clarissa, and I all laughed softly.

“Then come sit by me, «bella»!”

Rebekah came around and sat on José’s left, and he played through the piece, singing to her while I followed along on the sheet music. He ran through it a second time, and I fingered the chords.

“I’m not sure I can sing that in Spanish,” I said.

“Mostly it sounds just as it’s written. A double ‘l’ is pronounced as ‘y’, and there are no words with an ‘ñ’. And besides, if Nat King Cole could sing in Spanish, so can you!”

“Mike, try just humming in tune,” Milena said. “That way, José has something to key on.”

We did as she asked and it sounded awesome, with my humming being very close to an ‘ison’ used in Byzantine chant. I had to suppress my urge to laugh as Rebekah used the exact same gestures and motions she’d used with me. I also noticed out of the corner of my eye, Kimiko watching me intently, as she had every time she’d been close.

“Wow!” Clarissa said when we finished. “That was amazing! José sounded SO much better singing with Mike humming.”

“I think that’s how you two could work on José’s singing,” Milena said. “It worked very well. It’s like having a permanent pitch pipe to correct his tone.”

“Would you guys play a few songs for us?” Elaine, a dark-haired girl with thick glasses asked.

I looked over to José who nodded.

“Sure,” I replied. “I’ll play a couple of songs I didn’t play the other night, and José can alternate with whatever he likes.”

“Some tangos, I think,” he replied.

“I’ll get you guys some Jazz tapes to listen to,” Milena said. “Then you can really jam!”

José and I alternated songs, playing three each, before we stopped to get something to drink. Most people got sodas from the new machine which had been installed in the lounge, while Milena, Clarissa, and I got some from my fridge. We stayed in my room to talk.

“I think Rebekah has a thing for guitar players,” Clarissa said with a quiet laugh.

“I think Rebekah just wants to get laid!” Milena laughed.

“I’ll leave that duty to José, if he’s interested,” I grinned. “Let’s go hang out.”

We went back out to sit with the group.

“Mike,” Rebekah asked. “Do you think the floor will vote for no curfew?”

“It’s a lock,” I replied. “In fact, if any of you object to that, you should ask to change now, because all our friends requested this floor specifically to make that choice. And, honestly, I think every co-ed floor is going to vote to do away with it.”

“Cool! And how tough are they really on the rules?”

“They’re really strict on drugs, even pot. Violating that rule will get you expelled and they’ll call the police. They’re not quite so strict on alcohol, but if somehow the police get wind of it, then you’ll be in serious trouble with the school and likely get a citation from the cops. Basically, Dean Parker is a royal pain in the butt, and if she gets ANY proof of those violations, she’ll come down on you like a ton of bricks. The other one they’re strict about is having anyone under eighteen in the dorms. Otherwise? Just don’t be stupid about it.”

“We don’t do bed checks, if that’s what you’re asking!” Teri laughed coming into the lounge. “But we are totally serious about the noise rules. Monday through Thursday, nothing which can be heard outside your room. People study in this area, too. You’ll need to work out with your roommates what’s OK during the evening study hours.”

“What are those?”

“Usually 7:00pm to 11:00pm,” I replied. “There are two groups which meet. Ours, which focuses on biology and chemistry and one which focuses on math and stats, which also includes economics majors. And there are small groups which meet in rooms, too. Our group, at least, will take Freshmen who are biology, chemistry, or biochem majors. And any of us will help out with calculus for anyone who needs it.”

“The other thing we do,” Clarissa said. “is provide escorts for any girls who need one. All you need to do is call the main floor phone and two students will come to escort you back to the dorm from pretty much anywhere within walking distance.”

“We’ve heard rumors of rapes,” Elaine said.

“They caught the guy and he’s locked up at least until he’s old and gray,” I replied. “But we decided to keep doing it for safety’s sake.”

“I heard it was a student,” José said.

“It was, unfortunately.”

“How are the parties here?” Rebekah asked.

“Most of the good ones are off campus,” Teri said. “And they’re all invitation only. Just make friends and you’ll be invited.”

“I think I’m going to head home,” Milena said.

“See you on Sunday afternoon?”

“Sure. Are you and Clarissa bringing anyone?”

“I’m bringing Glenda,” Clarissa said.

“I’m not sure,” I replied. “I’ll let you know tomorrow.”

Milena and Clarissa exchanged a quick hug, and then she hugged me and gave me a peck on the cheek. As she walked away, Rebekah put her hand on José’s arm, and I wasn’t surprised when José put his guitar in its case, grabbed his sheet music, and they went down the hall. I started to put my guitar away but stopped when Kimiko spoke.

“Mike?” she asked quietly. “Would you play a song for me?”

“Sure. Pick something from the folder.”

She came over to the couch and took the folder from the low table in front of it. She flipped through the sheet music and extracted something and handed it to me. Unsurprisingly, it was an Air Supply Song.

“Have a seat,” I said.

She sat down on the couch, and I saw Clarissa smirk and roll her eyes. I ignored her and began singing to Kimiko. The refrain was pretty suggestive, especially given I’d just met her, but I sang it the way it was meant to be sung.

I want you
Having you near me, holding you near me
I want you to stay and never go away
It’s so right
Having you near me, holding you near me
I’ll love you tonight, it feels so right
Feels so right

“Wonderful,” she said when I finished. “Thanks.”

“You’re welcome!”

“Will you play again for me sometime?”

“Sure.”

She smiled got up from the couch, and headed down the hall. I put my guitar into its case, gathered my sheet music, and Clarissa and I went into my room.

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 67 Whippets

February 11, 1984, Rutherford, Ohio “Hi, Mike!” Emmy exclaimed when Liz and I arrived at the apartment she shared with her cousin. Liz and I greeted her and she let us in. “What’s the plan, Em?” Liz asked. “The other girls will be here soon. We can go out or just order pizza and hang out here. My cousin bought a video cassette recorder, and she has some movies, or we can rent one from the store down the street, or we can go to the theater.” “Do you care, Mike?” Liz asked. I shook my...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 64 Am I Allowed To Be Nervous

January 20, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “I actually think that might be a good idea,” Doctor Mercer said when we spoke on Friday afternoon. “What kind of time limits would you suggest?” “I think I’d like to wait until I see you on the 11th. I’ll see Angie a dozen times by then, and I’ll have a better idea what to tell you.” “How is she?” “I know it might not have seemed like it, but it lifted her spirits and made her very happy.” “That’s good to hear. I take it there were no ill effects from...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 72 Status Reports

March 20, 1984, Rutherford, Ohio I arrived at the halfway house in Rutherford just after 2:30pm on Tuesday afternoon wearing my cassock to keep up appearances. I was shown into Mr. Gilbert’s office. He offered coffee which I accepted and we sat down in a pair of chairs next to his desk. “Is everything OK?” I asked. “Yes, it is. I just wanted a word with you so I could thank you for the help you’ve given Paul Reynolds. I started doing this six years ago when I retired from GE, and we’ve...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 7 Substitution

June 9, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “Unbelievable,” Milena sighed as she snuggled close. We were sitting very close together in bed, leaning against pillows which were against the wall, the sheet pulled up only to our thighs, and wine glasses in our hands. “What?” I asked. “That something so gentle and so slow could make me feel better than a night of crazy sex.” “Isn’t that what happened with Joel?” I asked. “You told me that mostly it was just making love then talking for hours.” “But we’re...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 29 All Grown Up

September 24, 1983, McKinley, Ohio On Saturday morning, I was up at 4:30am, quickly showered, dressed, and left Sophia in my bed while I went to the lab to take down the readings and complete the checklists. I was back about 6:10am and Sophia was still sleeping. I changed into my running clothes and headed back outside. As I ran, I thought about my conversation with Sophia the previous evening. I didn’t have an easy answer for Angie, any more than I’d had one for Jocelyn, and I was...

September 27, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “That was not what I expected, AT ALL!” I said when Robby, Lee, Angie and I left for karate on Tuesday afternoon. “Two kilos is distribution amounts,” Robby said. “Forget expulsion, he’s going to do some serious jail time unless he has a good lawyer who can arrange for him to cop a plea.” “The funny thing is,” Lee said, “he had such a rep as a partier, I wouldn’t be shocked if that was his personal stash!” “Oh, come on!” Robby exclaimed. “Do you realize...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 23 Labor Day Weekend Part II

September 3, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio “So now what?” she asked after about ten minutes of silence. A lot had run through my mind in those ten minutes. Jocelyn and I were two very different people, and I wondered if ‘Jos’ and ‘Mik’ actually still existed, or if they, too, had died as a direct result of that accident. And if they had, then what? Was there ANYTHING which could be salvaged from the past? Was Jocelyn even capable of having that kind of friendship? Her psyche was a complete mess,...

January 4, 1984, Rutherford, Ohio “How was New Year’s in Indianapolis?” I asked Dale when we sat down with our food at A&W. “Clara and I broke up,” he replied. “Whoa!” Jocelyn gasped. “What happened?” “It was building for the past few months,” Dale replied. “I’m not ready to be tied down as far as she wanted to tie me down.” “I don’t know,” I smirked, “I hear that can be fun!” Dale nodded, “Oh, it can!” Clarissa and I laughed and Jocelyn rolled her eyes as she had done so often...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 42 Kentucky for Christmas

November 13, 1983, McKinley Ohio Kimiko had spent the night with me on Saturday, and Clarissa joined the two of us to go to church. The previous night, when Clarissa had spoken my thoughts, we’d simply hugged, she’d kissed my cheek, and left, letting Kimiko know I was waiting for her. The previous twenty-four hours had been almost surreal, but also clarifying. But it wasn’t over just yet — I had my date with Tasha, which I felt was going to be equally enlightening. Kimiko hadn’t said...

Will you try?” “I think I read the same book,” I replied. “The Joy of Sex?” “Yes, that was the book. Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 2 Son of a Vich

May 28, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio Later that morning, I stared at the phone, trying to decide exactly what I was going to say to Janey. My problem was, that even asking her to have lunch was fraught with problems. If we were seen together, AND it got back to Tasha, or worse, Deacon Vasily, that would be the end of any possible relationship with Tasha. And the more I thought about it, the more convinced I was that I didn’t want to do that. That said, I didn’t want to have the conversation with...

November 22, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio I’d expected an immediate reaction but for a good thirty seconds, you could have heard a pin drop in the sitting room. The silence quickly grew oppressive and suffocating. I carefully watched Deacon Vasily’s face and specifically his eyes, and waited for the eruption which was bubbling just below the surface, but his wife beat him to it. “Sasha,” she asked softly, a tear running down her cheek, “are you sure?” “Yes, Mom, I’m sure.” “How did this...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 50 Another End To A Semester

December 16, 1983, McKinley, Ohio Exams had gone well, and Clarissa, Sandy, and I didn’t have a Friday exam because of our work in the lab only had an evaluation, which we’d each received earlier in the week. We’d all received excellent reviews, which meant an A for the course for each of us. Our stats exam had actually been a breeze, as had the biochemistry exam. The psychology exam was moderately tough, but I was sure I’d achieved at least a B, which meant I would have an A for the course....

Hi, Tasha! Hi, Clarissa!” “Hi! Milena, where’s your intended?” I asked. “His friends have custody of him until the wedding starts at 8:00pm! November 6, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio Tasha screeched in outrage, but I answered quickly, and treated it as if Sasha were teasing. “I don’t think so!” I chuckled. “First of all, your dad would assume the baby is mine. Second, I would be in serious trouble with the bishop. And third, which would make the first two totally irrelevant, Tasha would murder me, immediately.” “Sasha!” Tasha began, but I put my hand on her arm and interrupted her. “Now, all silliness aside,” I continued, “your...

October 27, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio “How did your clandestine tryst go?” Mom asked with a smile when she arrived home. “OK. Maggie is suffering under pretty harsh restrictions; in a way, they’re even worse than the ones you imposed on Liz, and Maggie didn’t really do anything other than go to church with me, read some Orthodox books, and say some Orthodox prayers. I mean, I could at least understand somewhat if she and I had fooled around, but we didn’t.” “And you think her dad knows that?...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 59 Analysis

January 5, 1984, Milford, Ohio “Should I lie on the couch?” I asked with a silly grin. “If you feel more comfortable. Some people do better face to face, some do better when they can’t see the therapist, others prefer side-by-side. You’ll learn that for what you’ll call your ‘bedside manner’, no two patients will respond the same way. You and one other young man who shall remain nameless to protect the guilty, just want straight shooting, no mincing words. Others need enough embroidery to...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 66 A ManToMan Talk

February 11, 1984, West Monroe, Ohio After I left Doctor Mercer’s office, I stopped at a deli on Route 50 in Milford, bought a cup of coffee and a bagel, and then headed towards West Monroe. I was still chuckling to myself over the revelation that Emmy had told all of my sister’s friends about my measurements, and apparently my prowess, and that had led to Mindy’s full-court press, as well as attention from the other girls, which, until they turned sixteen, had been a bit of flirting, but...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 76 Or Is It Triple Now

April 2, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “«Ты говоришь по-русски?»” I asked when I recovered from the double shock. “«Удивлены»?” “I don’t think surprised even scratches the surface!” I replied in English, not wanting to give up any nuances of my speech. “What’s your full name?” “Larissa Sergeyevna Federova. I was named for ‘Lara’ in Doctor Zhivago, but I go by Laura Sera Bragg. My parents divorced when I was little and both remarried. My mom changed her and my legal name to Bragg, which is my...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 5 Milena and Joel

June 3, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “You’re serious?” Milena asked, incredulous. “I am; you figured it out, and this is the talk we SHOULD have had.” She shook her head, “Now you have ME thinking about whether we should do this or not.” “Which was my entire point.” “Not to interrupt this moment of clarity,” Deb said quietly, “but is that invitation open?” I chuckled, “I’ll leave the answer to that to the pianist. Her opinion may have changed.” Milena sighed, “How the hell did a twenty-year...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 31 One Day At A Time

September 30, 1983, McKinley, Ohio Since the invention of the kiss, there have been five kisses rated the most passionate, the most pure. This one left them all behind. Well, perhaps that was a bit of an exaggeration, but compared to other first kisses, this one was certainly memorable — a soft touching of lips, a light hug with Kimiko’s small, silk-covered breasts brushing lightly against me, and her hand lightly on my back. Kimiko broke the kiss, looked me in the eyes, and whispered,...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 47 Racial Purity

December 1, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “You really object to Emmy and Clark being together because they’re from different races?!” I asked, completely taken aback. “I’m sorry,” Kimiko replied meekly. “I was trying to describe how Japanese felt about mixed-race children, especially those of black American soldiers and Japanese women. But it’s really any mixed-race children or relationships, because they are not pure Japanese.” “So if you and I were to marry, and have kids who were half-Japanese,...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 17 Found Out

August 7, 1983, McKinley, Ohio The phone in my room rang late Sunday afternoon while Milena and I were relaxing and listening to music. “Hi, Mikey!” “Hi, Liz! What’s up?” “Guess whose parents came home WAY earlier than expected? Three guesses, and the first two don’t count!” “«Говно». Maggie’s.” “Right the first time.” “And?” “Grounded for two centuries, I think.” “Wonderful,” I sighed. “It’s worse, Mikey.” “How could it be worse?” “Her dad found the books you gave her and the...

January 7, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “Thanks for the lift, White Boy!” Clark said as we got out of my Mustang. “Somebody had to drag your lazy black ass the last fifty miles, and I have sympathy for the mentally challenged,” I deadpanned. “Hey, Cracker, are you saying I’m dumb because I’m black?” “Not at all! You being dumb has absolutely nothing to do with the color of your skin!” “Fuck you, Honky!” “I love you too!” I grinned. We both laughed, shook hands, and with Clarissa following...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 9 Rules Infraction

June 25, 1983, McKinley, Ohio I awoke to someone pounding on my door and calling my name. A quick glance at the clock showed it was 2:50am. I quickly got out of bed, pulled on shorts and a t-shirt and went to the door. I opened it to see a girl in a robe. “What’s up?” “Cecilia said to come get you. One of the girls is really sick!” “Did someone call for an ambulance?” I asked. “I don’t know.” “Call right now. Use my phone. Where are they?” “243!” I hurried down the hall into the...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 21 Back to Class

August 28, 1983, McKinley, Ohio When I got up on Sunday morning, I showered and dressed, and then Kristin and I left my room and I found a note from Angie on the corkboard next to my door. It said she was getting a ride to church from the same woman who had picked her up the previous night and I shouldn’t wait for her. I shrugged, locked the door, and gave Kristin a quick kiss. She headed down the hall towards her room and I walked over to the elevators and pushed the ‘Down’ button. An...

March 30, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “Sorry about earlier,” she said. “My roommate was being a bitch.” “Something specific?” I asked. “She’s been on the rag ever since our second week here. Guy trouble. I guess she thought you were trying to use me.” “I can see why she would think that,” I replied. “You and I don’t know each other except basically by sight and name, I sang to you, and you came to my room.” “If I were totally clueless about life, I could see it. Magic Medicine

MAGIC MEDICINE Christopher Halstead was at the end of his tether. He was only 50 years old but felt deep down in his soul that his useful life had come to an end. To understand why it is necessary to go back some twenty-five years. In 1992 Christopher married his childhood sweetheart Amy. He and Amy had grown up in adjacent houses; attended the same schools; and had had an unspoken 'understanding' from their teens. They only occasion they spent time apart was whilst they were at...

Andrea starts school at Saint Theresa Junior High

Andrea's Goes to School and begins to grows up By Robin Y. School started at St. Theresa's Junior High in September and I was excited and fearful to start my freshman year. Thus far, my new life as a girl had been limited to being with Aunt Hilda and her friends. The few other teens that I met didn't seem to be interested in including me in their circles. When school started things changed. In ninth grade all the girls came from different feeder schools. Most girls had at least one...

November 26, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio “So what did you say?” Clarissa asked after I relayed what Hannah had said. “I simply said I appreciated the offer, that I’d keep that in mind, then smiled and left the house.” “After Maggie gave you permission?” “I don’t need ‘permission’ from Maggie to do anything,” I protested. “And be serious, Lissa, do you think it’s a good idea?” Clarissa shrugged, “Is it all that different from Kristin? Or from Mindy and Emmy?” “That kind of thinking is a...

July 1, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “Are you OK?” Clarissa asked on Friday morning as we lay in bed together. “Why wouldn’t I be?” “You seemed a bit out of sorts last night. Did that kiss bother you?” I smiled, “Not the way you mean. It was just, well, to be blunt, fighting a reaction. And losing.” Clarissa laughed softly, “I know. I felt it when I spooned. I’m sorry.” “Don’t be. I liked the kiss. The other reaction is kind of involuntary. As I keep saying, testosterone knows NOTHING about...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 4 A Good Reason

June 1, 1983, McKinley, Ohio Wednesday at the Quick Mart was very much like Tuesday, though there were no deliveries, so I had time to work through a number of items on Mr. Sokolov’s list. That kept me busy, and away from Nancy except for when it was time for her breaks. She apologized again and I replied as I had before, just telling her to take her break. Maybe I was being a jerk, but I was honestly quite upset with her, and really didn’t think there was much to talk about. When my shift...

July 23, 1983, McKinley, Ohio Just as I had when Nancy told me that her mom had put her on the Pill, I missed a shift due to being completely surprised by Maggie’s question. I recovered enough to find the correct gear, and willed my heart to stop beating rapidly. The silence was deafening, but I needed to think about how I could answer her question. July 28, 1983, McKinley, Ohio On Thursday evening I was sitting in my room, practicing my guitar after having spoken with Tasha and confirmed our date for Sunday. Just after 9:00pm, there was a knock at the door. “It’s unlocked! Come in!” The door opened and Milena walked in, closing the door behind her. “Hey!” I replied. “What’s up?” “Got some time for me?” “Always. Let’s get our showers and meet Jocelyn. We need to get on the road by 6:30am so we can be in Philadelphia by 10:00am.” We both quickly showered and dressed, then we met Jocelyn in the hotel lobby. Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 12 Conflagration

July 5, 1983, McKinley, Ohio As I showered after karate, I wondered exactly what Angie had meant when she said that she’d changed, and what that meant for the future. Angie had told me that her counselor had advised against starting a relationship, so perhaps this was just Angie’s way of telling me that what Clarissa had suggested might be true — that Angie was playing the ‘long game’ and this was simply the next step. That made more sense than anything, but it also meant I needed to be...

April 8, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “Natalya Vasilyevna Antonova, please meet Larissa Sergeyevna Federova,” I said. I laughed as the two girls instantly switched to Russian and I had to focus to catch everything that was said. Clarissa smirked and rolled her eyes, and I just shrugged. The gist of the conversation was hometowns, parents, churches, majors, and to Tasha’s obvious shock, Lara’s age. “Perhaps we should switch to English so Sveta isn’t left out,” Tasha said in English. “Mike looked...

December 20, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio “What do you think my dad would say if he saw us like this?” Tasha asked. We were lying naked, on her small, twin bed, snuggled together, after having done our best to wear each other out for about ninety minutes. “I do believe the heart attack would kill him before he could open his mouth!” “It was fun fooling around my bed,” she said. “Though it’s a bit small for that purpose!” “Is the apartment over the Quick Mart furnished?” “Yes. In fact, I was sure that win or lose, I’d win, from a certain perspective. “No, that’s not it...” I started. “Then let’s play!” “Are you sure?” She nodded, “I can’t think of a more fun way to celebrate my birthday!” I could, and I was sure that what I was thinking was exactly what she was thinking, and she was just...

She really could pick anything.” “What happened with the baby’s father?” Clarissa asked. “My dad, Timmy’s dad, and two attorneys worked out the deal. June 5, 1983, McKinley, Ohio My alarm rang on Sunday morning and when I reached over to shut it off, Milena groaned softly, stretched, and turned to face me, her glorious breasts rubbing against my chest. “Hi,” she said sheepishly. “What’s wrong?” “Nothing! September 3, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio Tasha was very quiet on the drive home from Jackson Lake, and I wasn’t sure what to say to her, so I stayed quiet as well. When we arrived at my house, we exchanged a perfunctory kiss. “Are you OK?” I asked. “Yes,” she replied. “I’ll see you tomorrow at church.” I got out of the Volvo and went into the house. January 14, 1984, Loveland, Ohio On Saturday morning, after breakfast, I’d said goodbye to Clarissa and gotten in my car for the drive to Loveland. The ninety minutes in the car gave me my first real time alone since returning to campus. Clarissa was doing OK, and I’d managed to spend a few hours over the course of the week with Sophia, and had a chance to be the octopus for Kimiko.
