July 5, 1983, McKinley, Ohio

As I showered after karate, I wondered exactly what Angie had meant when she said that she’d changed, and what that meant for the future. Angie had told me that her counselor had advised against starting a relationship, so perhaps this was just Angie’s way of telling me that what Clarissa had suggested might be true — that Angie was playing the ‘long game’ and this was simply the next step. That made more sense than anything, but it also meant I needed to be extremely careful that I wasn’t improperly leading her on.

The thing that continued to bother me was that I had no idea how I could ever be sure Angie was past whatever her problems were, or if not past them, at least in a place where she had dealt with them sufficiently to have a proper relationship. She’d been diagnosed with depression, and a tendency towards neuroticism, and I didn’t know enough about either of those to make any firm judgments.

Fundamentally, the only thing I could do was wait and see, which was true of any of the girls I was interested in or who were interested in me. In the meantime, I’d spend time with my friends, including Milena, and simply see how things developed. There really wasn’t any other way forward except ‘wait and see’. And at this point in my life, given everything that was going on, that was absolutely the best approach in my mind.

I got out of the shower, dried off, put on shorts and a t-shirt, turned on the radio, then stretched out on the couch to relax a bit before dinner. About thirty minutes later the door opened and Angie stuck her head in to say it was time to head to the cafeteria. I got up, turned off the radio, and we headed to dinner.

After dinner, Angie went to do homework, and I went back to my room. I pulled out my guitar to practice and sat down on the couch. I had barely settled in when there was a knock at the door. I put down the guitar, got up, walked over to the door, and opened it.

“Hi!” Deb exclaimed.

“Hey! What’s up?”

“About that favor...” she said sexily.

I laughed, “I don’t recall offering a specific way of returning it.”

“You’re right! You asked for a favor and I get to ask for one in return!”

I nodded, “You do.”

“I WILL take that, but I don’t think you’d agree, so instead I’ll ask for a ride. I need to drop my car at the dealer tonight and get it back tomorrow afternoon. If you follow me over and give me a ride back, then take me over tomorrow, we’ll call it even.”

“Letting me off the hook that easily?” I grinned.

“Milena said things had changed and I’m not going to be ‘that girl’ about it.”

“I appreciate it.”

“That said, I won’t turn it down! But I’d still need the rides.”

“Which would be two favors,” I replied with a grin. “Let’s go drop off your car.”

The drive to the Ford dealer on the other side of town took about fifteen minutes, and after Deb had put her keys in an envelope and dropped them through the slot on the door, she got into my Mustang for the drive back to campus.

“Thanks. What time do you get off work tomorrow?”

“3:00pm, same as every day.”

“Cool. The car should be done by the time you get off work; it’s just brakes. I’ll call to check if they haven’t called.”

“Sounds good.”

“Any plans for tonight?”

“I hadn’t made any.”

“If you want company, I’m not doing anything. And I don’t mean ‘company’.”

I laughed, “You don’t have to qualify your statements. I know how to say ‘no’ if I think you’re crossing any lines I don’t want you to cross. And you’re always welcome to hang out with me.”

“I’ll take you up on that.”

When we arrived back on campus we went to my room and I got two bottles of soda from the fridge, put Synchronicity on the turntable then plopped down on the couch next to Deb.

“Did you know Milena is trying to locate Joel?”

“No! How?”

“She called some place in Cincinnati that does security services and locates missing people.”

“She didn’t say anything about it to me. Are you sure you should have told me?”

“She won’t be upset that I told you. You helped her figure out what was missing in her life, and that’s a good thing.”

“What’s missing in YOUR life?” I asked.

“Are you offering the same kind of assistance you did for Milena?” Deb asked with a silly smile.

“Sure. LOTS of talking. That’s what did it. Sex is actually kind of incidental to very intimate conversations. I learned a very important lesson from everything that happened.”

“That threesomes aren’t your thing?” Deb laughed.

“Among other things,” I agreed with a grin. “I don’t regret it, but it’s not something I’ll repeat.”

“I’d say after actually getting to know you, that doesn’t surprise me.”

“So, what’s missing from your life?”

“Right now? I don’t think there’s anything. I didn’t have a guy like Joel, and I’m having fun. Eventually, I’ll find the right guy and settle down. I’m not in a rush.”

“As long as you’re happy. Milena wasn’t.”

“Until you worked your magic. I mean emotional and mental magic, not the other kind!”

“It wasn’t THAT bad, was it?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.

“No, of course not! You’re not wild and you’ll probably never be wild, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t enjoyable.”

There was a knock on the door, and the knob turned, and Milena came into the room.

“Am I interrupting?”

“Not at all,” Deb said. “We’re just talking. Mike gave me a ride to drop my car at the dealership and I asked him to hang out.”

“Come sit with us,” I said.

Milena came to the couch and sat between Deb and me, then snuggled close. Deb laughed softly and moved to the loveseat.

“I could leave if you want,” she said.

“Stay as long as you like,” Milena replied, snuggling even closer, and sighing deeply.

“How was your day, Milena?” Deb asked.

“Other than wanting to strangle two of my piano students? OK.”

“The twins?”

“Yes. Mike, they’re totally undisciplined and Mommy and Daddy think they walk on water and are the greatest gift to music since Vladimir Horowitz. Even after a year, I think with a lesson or two, you’d play better!”

“Why keep it up?” I asked.

“Because I think they actually have some talent if they can learn a bit of discipline.”

Deb laughed, “Not to mention the fact that their parents pay three times the going rate because they KNOW the little brats are, well, little brats!”

“How old?” I asked.

“They just turned eight,” Milena replied. “Girls, by the way. And you’ll love this, Mike — their mom and dad are both doctors.”

“Trying to warn me about something?” I asked.

“I don’t see you ever developing that kind of attitude, but you have to be careful not to let your ego run away with you.”

“I take it you know the difference between God and a doctor, right?” I asked.

Milena laughed, “God doesn’t think he’s a doctor. Stay down to earth, Mike. Don’t turn into a stuck-up society asshole like the twins’ parents.”

“They live in McKinley and are ‘society’? I didn’t know this town HAD a society!”

“You didn’t notice the houses in our neighborhood? Ours is one of the smaller ones. And even though McKinley isn’t the size of Cincinnati, Columbus, or Cleveland, all it takes is a few people to think they’re big fish in the small pond. Just don’t let becoming a doctor go to your head.”

“And here I thought people would throw bay leaves as I walked down the sidewalk and bow and kiss my feet as I passed by,” I chuckled.

“I can think of WAY better fantasies than that one!” Deb laughed. “I can call Laurie and Jennifer if you want!”

I chuckled, “Thanks, but no. I’m actually enjoying talking to you and Milena and cuddling her.”

“You’d rather do that than get wildly fucked by four hot girls who are in their early twenties?”

“He would,” Milena interjected. “And I am NOT complaining.”

She snuggled closer, letting a soft purr escape that caused a reaction from Deb, who raised her eyebrows and smiled.

“And I stand by my statement,” I said with a wink.

“Unbelievable,” Deb said in awe. “I would never have believed it.”

“Believe it,” Milena said with a contented sigh.

“I think I’ll leave you two alone,” Deb said. “I’ll let myself out.”

“Good night,” I replied.

She got up, came over to the couch, kissed my cheek, and then let herself out.

“Make love to me?” Milena whispered.

I turned, scooped her up and carried her to the bed. I undressed her and myself, and we made slow, passionate love, then cuddled naked.

“What will you do if you find him?” I asked.

“Deb told you?”

“Yes.”

“Call him, I guess. It’s been nearly ten years at this point. For all I know he’s married and has kids.”

“That’s possible, but he could, equally likely, never have gotten over you the way you haven’t gotten over him.”

“And then Joel and I ride off into the sunset?”

“I’d prefer to keep you as a friend,” I said. “But if that’s what’s best for you...”

“Right now, what’s best for me, is your love and affection.”

“It makes me feel very good to hear you say that.”

“I would hope so,” she laughed. “You said it was better than wild sex with four willing girls.”

“I said that because it’s true.”

Milena smiled and snuggled close. A few minutes later, we fell asleep, entwined in each other’s arms and legs.

July 9, 1983, McKinley, Ohio

“Mishka!” Tasha exclaimed when I greeted her in the lobby of the dorm.

“Hi, Tasha!” I replied, taking her into my arms.

We shared a quick kiss, then left the building hand-in-hand.

“What are we doing today?” she asked.

“Anything you want, with the caveat that I won’t break my promise to you!”

“Now you’re just being mean!” she laughed.

“Why do you say that? Is it mean to respect you?”

“It’s not, but I can’t tease you very easily when you say things like that!” she laughed.

“So? What do you want to do?”

“I’m not allowed in your room, correct?”

“Not until your birthday. But even then, we have to be careful.”

“Careful? Why?”

I chuckled, “Hormones!”

Tasha laughed softly, “You think we will like it so much we won’t be able to stop?”

“You’ve given that impression, yes!”

“Perhaps,” she said, kissing my cheek. “Anyway, I know it’s about ninety minutes away, but what about going to King’s Island for the day?”

“We could only stay until about 4:00pm because of Vespers.”

“Could you skip?”

“If I called Father Nicholas and let him know. I’d need to tell Angie, too, because I give her a ride to church.”

“I’m OK if we go now. We could just get donuts or bagels for breakfast and eat on the way.”

“Then let’s do that,” I agreed.

We headed to my car and quickly left the parking lot. We stopped at a bakery on Route 50 at the edge of town and got donuts and coffee, then set out for King’s Island.

“Do you ride roller coasters?” I asked.

“Absolutely! We have to ride The Beast, the Screamin’ Demon, The Bat, and The Racer!”

“I heard they changed The Racer to run backwards.”

“One track. We have to ride backwards!”

I chuckled, “Miss Excitement!”

“I’ll show you all the excitement you can handle!” she teased with an impish smile.

She was teasing, and I decided to tease back, just a bit.

“So long as it doesn’t commit me to anything...” I grinned.

“In your DREAMS, Mishka!” she laughed. “Even though I VERY much want to do that with you, you know I can only ever do it with the man I marry.”

“I know, which is why you made me promise!”

“Of course, if you promise to marry me...” she teased.

“And cross my fingers behind my back?”

“You would never do that!”

“Are you SURE about that? For the chance to get what you keep teasing me about? I mean, if it’s as good as you say...”

“Mishka!” she squealed. “Now you’re being «некультурный»!”

“Me? YOU started it!”

“I suppose I did, didn’t I?”

“Yes! You even made a point about wanting to tease me. Is this your master plan? To tease me until I can’t resist and lure me into your trap?”

“Trap?!” she squealed in outrage. “Trap?!”

“Ah, see, now the teasing shoe is on the other foot!”

“You!” she growled.

“Ooh, I like it when you’re feisty!” I replied.

“Stop it, Miskha!” she squealed.

“Don’t you want to know what it would feel like? To kiss, and then...”

“Stop!” Tasha demanded, interrupting me, but she was laughing. “Perhaps teasing wasn’t the best idea!”

“Perhaps not,” I chuckled.

We arrived at King’s Island just before it opened and spent the morning riding roller coasters and the afternoon on other rides, as well as taking the monorail through the wildlife park. We left just before 4:00pm so we could make it back to McKinley in time for Vespers. After Vespers, Angie, Tasha, and I had dinner, and then Tasha headed back to West Monroe.

July 10, 1983, McKinley, Ohio

Sunday afternoon was a time for phone calls. I called home and talked to Liz and my parents, but nothing much was going on in West Monroe, which didn’t surprise me at all. Liz did tell me that Maggie wanted to go out on Friday, and that she’d be in McKinley at 4:00pm, if that worked for me, which it did. She promised to relay my response to Maggie and call me if anything came up which meant we’d have to change our plans.

My next call was to Becky. We had a good talk, but I was still at a loss as to how we could get to know each other better. Long-distance charges prevented lengthy, regular calls, and letters didn’t allow for actual conversation. And the distance between us was such that even monthly visits were basically out of the question because of school and work. Neither of us was in a position to change schools, and that meant at least three years before we had any chance of solving the ‘distance problem’ as we called it.

“Sometimes I wonder if I should just drop out and move to McKinley.”

“I think any way you slice that, there are too many possible bad outcomes to take the risk.”

“Oh, I know,” she sighed. “I said ‘I wonder’, not that I was going to do it. It’s just that things seem so good when I’m with you, then I come back to Michigan and it’s like any progress we make is lost. And then we see each other again in six months and the cycle repeats.”

“Which is more or less how I see it, too. I’ve wracked my brain for a solution and haven’t found one.”

“So what do we do?”

“Keep in touch, see each other when we can, and see what happens. Basically what we’ve been doing. You know I’ve been dating, but there is nobody I’d call ‘serious’ at this point.”

“Not Tasha?”

“No. We’re just dating. I see other girls from time to time, but honestly, I’m spending more time with my friend Milena this Summer, and with Clarissa during the school year, than anyone else. And while I can’t reliably predict the future, and without making any promises, I honestly don’t foresee anything changing in the next year or so.”

“You mean not getting engaged?”

“The chances of THAT are vanishingly near zero,” I chuckled. “Could it happen? Sure. Do I expect it to? No. And honestly, I’m not looking for that right now.”

“I suppose that’s the best answer either of us can give. Wait and see. It sucks, but it’s all we can do.”

We chatted for another five minutes before we said ‘goodbye’ and hung up. I had the distinct feeling that we were just marking time, and that, in the end, there wasn’t much chance of us being together unless I waited three years. That was entirely possible, of course, but not likely. For the time being, I simply had to remain focused on things of immediate concern — friends, family, school, and work.

My final call of the day was to Clarissa. Despite having seen her just a week previously, I missed her something fierce. The only other time I’d felt even remotely the same way had been when Jocelyn’s family took their Summer vacations and I didn’t see her for a couple of weeks. It was as if there was a part of me that was missing.

“I got a postcard from Glenda,” Clarissa said after we’d greeted each other. “She met some kids from the US and Canada and they all decided to buy some kind of train pass and travel through Europe staying at youth hostels.”

“That actually sounds like a lot of fun.”

“I would have liked to have gone along, but I guess they made a last-minute decision.”

“You would have flown to Europe?”

“I have some money saved that I could have used, and it would have been a great chance to do it now, before we get completely consumed by our studies.”

“When will she be back?”

“Right before school starts, so I won’t see her until sometime in August. How are things with Milena?”

“Pretty good. She decided to try to track down Joel, the guy she was in love with, and, in my opinion, still is.”

“It’s been a long time, right?”

“Ten years, roughly. She hired some company in Cincinnati to help her find him.”

“Then what?”

“I suppose it all depends on his situation. They had something really special, but who knows how he feels at this point? I know how she feels.”

“I BET you do,” Clarissa teased.

“I’d do what I’m doing for her without the sex.”

“But you couldn’t, really. Without that, I’m not sure you would have been able to break through her façade and find the true Milena. Want to know something strange?”

“What?”

“If you had taken her up on her offer at any point before that night with her and Deb, it wouldn’t have had the same effect.”

“I think I have to agree with you,” I replied. “But I certainly didn’t plan it that way!”

“Actually, in a sense, you did. You pushed her to think about what she was doing, maybe for the first time in ten years.”

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 64 Am I Allowed To Be Nervous

January 20, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “I actually think that might be a good idea,” Doctor Mercer said when we spoke on Friday afternoon. “What kind of time limits would you suggest?” “I think I’d like to wait until I see you on the 11th. I’ll see Angie a dozen times by then, and I’ll have a better idea what to tell you.” “How is she?” “I know it might not have seemed like it, but it lifted her spirits and made her very happy.” “That’s good to hear. I take it there were no ill effects from...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 57 Domino Theory

January 1, 1984, McKinley, Ohio Chloe melted into my arms and molded her body against mine and we began swaying to All Out of Love. I very much enjoyed the full-body contact, but something just felt different. I realized that I, too, had been enthralled by our duet, but it had worn off. I wondered if that was true for Chloe as well. If it had, then she wouldn’t ask; if it hadn’t, and she did, I’d promised to say ‘yes’. And truth be told, I knew I wanted to feel the body which was currently...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 72 Status Reports

March 20, 1984, Rutherford, Ohio I arrived at the halfway house in Rutherford just after 2:30pm on Tuesday afternoon wearing my cassock to keep up appearances. I was shown into Mr. Gilbert’s office. He offered coffee which I accepted and we sat down in a pair of chairs next to his desk. “Is everything OK?” I asked. “Yes, it is. I just wanted a word with you so I could thank you for the help you’ve given Paul Reynolds. I started doing this six years ago when I retired from GE, and we’ve...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 7 Substitution

June 9, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “Unbelievable,” Milena sighed as she snuggled close. We were sitting very close together in bed, leaning against pillows which were against the wall, the sheet pulled up only to our thighs, and wine glasses in our hands. “What?” I asked. “That something so gentle and so slow could make me feel better than a night of crazy sex.” “Isn’t that what happened with Joel?” I asked. “You told me that mostly it was just making love then talking for hours.” “But we’re...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 29 All Grown Up

September 24, 1983, McKinley, Ohio On Saturday morning, I was up at 4:30am, quickly showered, dressed, and left Sophia in my bed while I went to the lab to take down the readings and complete the checklists. I was back about 6:10am and Sophia was still sleeping. I changed into my running clothes and headed back outside. As I ran, I thought about my conversation with Sophia the previous evening. I didn’t have an easy answer for Angie, any more than I’d had one for Jocelyn, and I was...

September 27, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “That was not what I expected, AT ALL!” I said when Robby, Lee, Angie and I left for karate on Tuesday afternoon. “Two kilos is distribution amounts,” Robby said. “Forget expulsion, he’s going to do some serious jail time unless he has a good lawyer who can arrange for him to cop a plea.” “The funny thing is,” Lee said, “he had such a rep as a partier, I wouldn’t be shocked if that was his personal stash!” “Oh, come on!” Robby exclaimed. “Do you realize...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 23 Labor Day Weekend Part II

September 3, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio “So now what?” she asked after about ten minutes of silence. A lot had run through my mind in those ten minutes. Jocelyn and I were two very different people, and I wondered if ‘Jos’ and ‘Mik’ actually still existed, or if they, too, had died as a direct result of that accident. And if they had, then what? Was there ANYTHING which could be salvaged from the past? Was Jocelyn even capable of having that kind of friendship? Her psyche was a complete mess,...

January 4, 1984, Rutherford, Ohio “How was New Year’s in Indianapolis?” I asked Dale when we sat down with our food at A&W. “Clara and I broke up,” he replied. “Whoa!” Jocelyn gasped. “What happened?” “It was building for the past few months,” Dale replied. “I’m not ready to be tied down as far as she wanted to tie me down.” “I don’t know,” I smirked, “I hear that can be fun!” Dale nodded, “Oh, it can!” Clarissa and I laughed and Jocelyn rolled her eyes as she had done so often...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 42 Kentucky for Christmas

November 13, 1983, McKinley Ohio Kimiko had spent the night with me on Saturday, and Clarissa joined the two of us to go to church. The previous night, when Clarissa had spoken my thoughts, we’d simply hugged, she’d kissed my cheek, and left, letting Kimiko know I was waiting for her. The previous twenty-four hours had been almost surreal, but also clarifying. But it wasn’t over just yet — I had my date with Tasha, which I felt was going to be equally enlightening. Kimiko hadn’t said...

May 28, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio Later that morning, I stared at the phone, trying to decide exactly what I was going to say to Janey. My problem was, that even asking her to have lunch was fraught with problems. If we were seen together, AND it got back to Tasha, or worse, Deacon Vasily, that would be the end of any possible relationship with Tasha. And the more I thought about it, the more convinced I was that I didn’t want to do that. That said, I didn’t want to have the conversation with...

November 22, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio I’d expected an immediate reaction but for a good thirty seconds, you could have heard a pin drop in the sitting room. The silence quickly grew oppressive and suffocating. I carefully watched Deacon Vasily’s face and specifically his eyes, and waited for the eruption which was bubbling just below the surface, but his wife beat him to it. “Sasha,” she asked softly, a tear running down her cheek, “are you sure?” “Yes, Mom, I’m sure.” “How did this...

Hi, Tasha! Hi, Clarissa!” “Hi! Milena, where’s your intended?” I asked. “His friends have custody of him until the wedding starts at 8:00pm! Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 66 A ManToMan Talk

February 11, 1984, West Monroe, Ohio After I left Doctor Mercer’s office, I stopped at a deli on Route 50 in Milford, bought a cup of coffee and a bagel, and then headed towards West Monroe. I was still chuckling to myself over the revelation that Emmy had told all of my sister’s friends about my measurements, and apparently my prowess, and that had led to Mindy’s full-court press, as well as attention from the other girls, which, until they turned sixteen, had been a bit of flirting, but...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 76 Or Is It Triple Now

April 2, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “«Ты говоришь по-русски?»” I asked when I recovered from the double shock. “«Удивлены»?” “I don’t think surprised even scratches the surface!” I replied in English, not wanting to give up any nuances of my speech. “What’s your full name?” “Larissa Sergeyevna Federova. I was named for ‘Lara’ in Doctor Zhivago, but I go by Laura Sera Bragg. My parents divorced when I was little and both remarried. My mom changed her and my legal name to Bragg, which is my...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 5 Milena and Joel

June 3, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “You’re serious?” Milena asked, incredulous. “I am; you figured it out, and this is the talk we SHOULD have had.” She shook her head, “Now you have ME thinking about whether we should do this or not.” “Which was my entire point.” “Not to interrupt this moment of clarity,” Deb said quietly, “but is that invitation open?” I chuckled, “I’ll leave the answer to that to the pianist. Her opinion may have changed.” Milena sighed, “How the hell did a twenty-year...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 31 One Day At A Time

September 30, 1983, McKinley, Ohio Since the invention of the kiss, there have been five kisses rated the most passionate, the most pure. This one left them all behind. Well, perhaps that was a bit of an exaggeration, but compared to other first kisses, this one was certainly memorable — a soft touching of lips, a light hug with Kimiko’s small, silk-covered breasts brushing lightly against me, and her hand lightly on my back. Kimiko broke the kiss, looked me in the eyes, and whispered,...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 47 Racial Purity

December 1, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “You really object to Emmy and Clark being together because they’re from different races?!” I asked, completely taken aback. “I’m sorry,” Kimiko replied meekly. “I was trying to describe how Japanese felt about mixed-race children, especially those of black American soldiers and Japanese women. But it’s really any mixed-race children or relationships, because they are not pure Japanese.” “So if you and I were to marry, and have kids who were half-Japanese,...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 17 Found Out

August 7, 1983, McKinley, Ohio The phone in my room rang late Sunday afternoon while Milena and I were relaxing and listening to music. “Hi, Mikey!” “Hi, Liz! What’s up?” “Guess whose parents came home WAY earlier than expected? Three guesses, and the first two don’t count!” “«Говно». Maggie’s.” “Right the first time.” “And?” “Grounded for two centuries, I think.” “Wonderful,” I sighed. “It’s worse, Mikey.” “How could it be worse?” “Her dad found the books you gave her and the...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 61 Make Love To Me Please

January 7, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “Thanks for the lift, White Boy!” Clark said as we got out of my Mustang. “Somebody had to drag your lazy black ass the last fifty miles, and I have sympathy for the mentally challenged,” I deadpanned. “Hey, Cracker, are you saying I’m dumb because I’m black?” “Not at all! You being dumb has absolutely nothing to do with the color of your skin!” “Fuck you, Honky!” “I love you too!” I grinned. We both laughed, shook hands, and with Clarissa following...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 9 Rules Infraction

June 25, 1983, McKinley, Ohio I awoke to someone pounding on my door and calling my name. A quick glance at the clock showed it was 2:50am. I quickly got out of bed, pulled on shorts and a t-shirt and went to the door. I opened it to see a girl in a robe. “What’s up?” “Cecilia said to come get you. One of the girls is really sick!” “Did someone call for an ambulance?” I asked. “I don’t know.” “Call right now. Use my phone. Where are they?” “243!” I hurried down the hall into the...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 50 Another End To A Semester

December 16, 1983, McKinley, Ohio Exams had gone well, and Clarissa, Sandy, and I didn’t have a Friday exam because of our work in the lab only had an evaluation, which we’d each received earlier in the week. We’d all received excellent reviews, which meant an A for the course for each of us. Our stats exam had actually been a breeze, as had the biochemistry exam. The psychology exam was moderately tough, but I was sure I’d achieved at least a B, which meant I would have an A for the course....

March 30, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “Sorry about earlier,” she said. “My roommate was being a bitch.” “Something specific?” I asked. “She’s been on the rag ever since our second week here. Guy trouble. I guess she thought you were trying to use me.” “I can see why she would think that,” I replied. “You and I don’t know each other except basically by sight and name, I sang to you, and you came to my room.” “If I were totally clueless about life, I could see it. But I knew what was going on!...

Magic Medicine

MAGIC MEDICINE Christopher Halstead was at the end of his tether. He was only 50 years old but felt deep down in his soul that his useful life had come to an end. To understand why it is necessary to go back some twenty-five years. In 1992 Christopher married his childhood sweetheart Amy. He and Amy had grown up in adjacent houses; attended the same schools; and had had an unspoken 'understanding' from their teens. They only occasion they spent time apart was whilst they were at...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 4 A Good Reason

June 1, 1983, McKinley, Ohio Wednesday at the Quick Mart was very much like Tuesday, though there were no deliveries, so I had time to work through a number of items on Mr. Sokolov’s list. That kept me busy, and away from Nancy except for when it was time for her breaks. She apologized again and I replied as I had before, just telling her to take her break. Maybe I was being a jerk, but I was honestly quite upset with her, and really didn’t think there was much to talk about. When my shift...

November 26, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio “So what did you say?” Clarissa asked after I relayed what Hannah had said. “I simply said I appreciated the offer, that I’d keep that in mind, then smiled and left the house.” “After Maggie gave you permission?” “I don’t need ‘permission’ from Maggie to do anything,” I protested. “And be serious, Lissa, do you think it’s a good idea?” Clarissa shrugged, “Is it all that different from Kristin? Or from Mindy and Emmy?” “That kind of thinking is a...

October 16, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “I started dating someone,” I said to Tasha as we relaxed in the whirlpool at Doctor Blahnik’s house. “You’re not cheating on her, are you Mikhail Petrovich?” “No. It’s not THAT serious, and it won’t be anytime soon, if it ever is. But I thought you should know because we promised complete truth and complete honesty. I don’t want any misunderstandings.” “May I ask about her?” “Her name is Kimiko Mei Takahasi. Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 15 Zenos Paradox

July 23, 1983, McKinley, Ohio Just as I had when Nancy told me that her mom had put her on the Pill, I missed a shift due to being completely surprised by Maggie’s question. I recovered enough to find the correct gear, and willed my heart to stop beating rapidly. The silence was deafening, but I needed to think about how I could answer her question. I wasn’t sure I knew the answer, but saying that seemed lame in the extreme. Almost immediately, I realized that I really shouldn’t have been...

July 28, 1983, McKinley, Ohio On Thursday evening I was sitting in my room, practicing my guitar after having spoken with Tasha and confirmed our date for Sunday. Just after 9:00pm, there was a knock at the door. “It’s unlocked! Come in!” The door opened and Milena walked in, closing the door behind her. “Hey!” I replied. “What’s up?” “Got some time for me?” “Always. March 15, 1984, Gettysburg and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania “You’re OK?” Clarissa asked when she and I got out of bed on Thursday morning. “Yes. Just kissing was fine, Lissa. Let’s get our showers and meet Jocelyn. We need to get on the road by 6:30am so we can be in Philadelphia by 10:00am.” We both quickly showered and dressed, then we met Jocelyn in the hotel lobby. Did that kiss bother you?” I smiled, “Not the way you mean. It was just, well, to be blunt, fighting a reaction. And losing.” Clarissa laughed softly, “I know. I felt it when I spooned. Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 79 Something MUCH More Interesting

April 8, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “Natalya Vasilyevna Antonova, please meet Larissa Sergeyevna Federova,” I said. I laughed as the two girls instantly switched to Russian and I had to focus to catch everything that was said. Clarissa smirked and rolled her eyes, and I just shrugged. The gist of the conversation was hometowns, parents, churches, majors, and to Tasha’s obvious shock, Lara’s age. “Perhaps we should switch to English so Sveta isn’t left out,” Tasha said in English. “Mike looked...

Mike told me you were going to hang out with us tonight.” “Do you drink wine?” Becky laughed, “My pastor would have a cow, but he’s not here!” Milena laughed, “And shacking up with Mike, THAT would be OK?” “Well, no!” Becky laughed, blushing slightly. Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 21 Back to Class

August 28, 1983, McKinley, Ohio When I got up on Sunday morning, I showered and dressed, and then Kristin and I left my room and I found a note from Angie on the corkboard next to my door. It said she was getting a ride to church from the same woman who had picked her up the previous night and I shouldn’t wait for her. I shrugged, locked the door, and gave Kristin a quick kiss. She headed down the hall towards her room and I walked over to the elevators and pushed the ‘Down’ button. An...

August 27, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio “Tasha,” I said gently, “you made me promise to keep you pure until we were married, or at least betrothed, no matter what you said! In other words, you made me promise not to do it even if you changed your mind! And I made that promise!” “I can’t change my mind?” “You were very clear that I was responsible for you NOT doing that.” “But isn’t that up to me?” I nodded, “As an adult, in charge of her own decisions, it is. But you extracted that promise...

October 14, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “I’m worried about Angie,” I said as Clarissa, Melody, and I made our way back to the dorm from the Chancellor’s office. “I know you told the detective that you have no idea where she might be, but do you have ANY thoughts?” Melody asked. I shook my head, “If she wasn’t with her friend and she wasn’t at church, and her counselor hadn’t heard from her, then no, honestly, I have no idea. I mean, she could have gone home, but I’m sure someone called there to...

In fact, I was sure that win or lose, I’d win, from a certain perspective. “No, that’s not it...” I started. “Then let’s play!” “Are you sure?” She nodded, “I can’t think of a more fun way to celebrate my birthday!” I could, and I was sure that what I was thinking was exactly what she was thinking, and she was just...

She really could pick anything.” “What happened with the baby’s father?” Clarissa asked. “My dad, Timmy’s dad, and two attorneys worked out the deal. June 5, 1983, McKinley, Ohio My alarm rang on Sunday morning and when I reached over to shut it off, Milena groaned softly, stretched, and turned to face me, her glorious breasts rubbing against my chest. “Hi,” she said sheepishly. “What’s wrong?” “Nothing! That’s just it. Nothing is wrong. September 3, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio Tasha was very quiet on the drive home from Jackson Lake, and I wasn’t sure what to say to her, so I stayed quiet as well. When we arrived at my house, we exchanged a perfunctory kiss. “Are you OK?” I asked. “Yes,” she replied. “I’ll see you tomorrow at church.” I got out of the Volvo and went into the house. January 14, 1984, Loveland, Ohio On Saturday morning, after breakfast, I’d said goodbye to Clarissa and gotten in my car for the drive to Loveland. The ninety minutes in the car gave me my first real time alone since returning to campus. Clarissa was doing OK, and I’d managed to spend a few hours over the course of the week with Sophia, and had a chance to be the octopus for Kimiko. It was an interesting dynamic, because Kimiko and I hadn’t been going out as a couple, so to outsiders, it...

Milena, Deb, Blaine, and Royce would join us as well. “Maggie and I don’t really flirt,” I replied. “It’s more like trying to agree on terms.” “Of surrender?” Clarissa laughed. “Of her virginity?” I laughed, “Those terms are well-known and agreed — engagement ring, wedding ring,...

July 22, 1983, McKinley, Ohio It took me a minute before I could think straight, and another minute to formulate a semi-coherent response. “Angie, I can’t make the commitment necessary to do that,” I replied gently. “I know, and I’m not asking for one.
