January 7, 1984, McKinley, Ohio

“Thanks for the lift, White Boy!” Clark said as we got out of my Mustang.

“Somebody had to drag your lazy black ass the last fifty miles, and I have sympathy for the mentally challenged,” I deadpanned.

“Hey, Cracker, are you saying I’m dumb because I’m black?”

“Not at all! You being dumb has absolutely nothing to do with the color of your skin!”

“Fuck you, Honky!”

“I love you too!” I grinned.

We both laughed, shook hands, and with Clarissa following behind, headed in to the dorm.

“Have dinner with us?” I asked as we got into the elevator.

“Man, I might mess up my street cred going out with white folks!”

“Yeah? And what will the McKinley cops think about Clarissa and me being seen with you?”

“Fuck those racist bastards! What time?”

“6:30pm work for you? Kristin will be here by then, too.”

“Sure.”

We exited the elevator on the 8th floor and Clark went to his room. Clarissa took her bag to her room and came back to join me in mine. I put on The Amazing Kamikaze Syndrome, a new album by Slade, which had been my sister’s gift to me. The album had two fantastic songs, Run Runaway and My Oh My, for which I liked to crank up the volume on my stereo.

“Will you settle a wager with me that I made with myself?” Clarissa asked as we sat close together on the couch.

“Possibly.”

“What did you and Jocelyn do after Liz and I left?”

I chuckled, “Milena and Mike.”

“Called it,” Clarissa said smugly.

“That’s not a tough call, Lissa! Except for Tasha, my lovers are like that.”

“Sophia?”

I chuckled, “We got that out of our system, so to speak, the first two nights in Michigan. The last night was just tender, sweet lovemaking.”

“Before that?”

“She can give Tasha a run for her money,” I chuckled.

“Is that something you feel you need from time to time?”

“I’m not sure I know the answer to that,” I replied. “You’re thinking you and me?”

“What ELSE do you think has been on my mind since you decided you could handle it, and that there was no way for it to go wrong?”

“I didn’t mean to pressure you,” I said.

“You didn’t. Are you and Jocelyn going to continue after she moves here?”

“Her take was right up to the moment she starts dating. But she’s not insatiable like a certain other girl of my acquaintance from West Monroe.”

“You do come back looking ‘rode hard and put away wet’ on those Sunday evenings!”

“And as I told Doctor Mercer, what I did with Milena was much more fulfilling. It’s not that Tasha isn’t fun and pleasurable, but we are, in effect, lost in the pleasure.”

“Because you decided you don’t have marriage in your future, you can be uninhibited and just seek out maximum pleasure.”

“I think that’s true.”

“Have you thought more about Kimiko?”

“I think it might have been a fantasy on par with the one Tasha and I had. Jocelyn suggested that was the case, and made a pretty strong argument that I was enraptured in Kimiko’s ‘otherness’.”

“‘Otherness’?”

“Jos is taking sociology and anthropology, to go along with the usual pre-law general studies. She said it will help her understand people and be able to assess juries better. They talked about cross-cultural relationships and why so many people find them attractive, but also why they often ultimately fail. The more ‘other’ a person is, the more alluring, and more difficult, the relationship is. And to be honest, I can see that just with what looks to outsiders to be a minor religious disagreement with April, or the diverging worldview issues I had with Janey and Melody. They could be friends, but not truly intimate partners like you, Jocelyn, or Milena.”

“That last one is the one that intrigues me to no end. Privately, she is nothing like her public persona.”

“Her public persona was a product of the mistake she and Joel made just before his family moved away. Once she had crazy, over-the-top sex at fourteen, she felt that was who she was. I helped her discover that wasn’t the case. Minus religion, she and I are very, very much alike. And that was her only issue, by the way. If I hadn’t been adamant about wanting to raise my kids Orthodox and attend church as a family, she’d have wanted to explore a future together. I’m glad that impediment was there, because she is truly meant to be with Joel.”

“Do you think she regrets the excess?”

“I’m not sure that’s the right way to look at it; I think she regrets how badly she hurt Joel by leading him down that path, and how it destroyed their relationship.”

“Do you think you’ve hurt Kimiko in any way?”

“That’s a very good question. I’ve been honest with her, but I suppose the most important question is whether or not I’ve been honest with me.”

“‘To thine own self be true’?”

“Yes, but the problem is deeper, I think. How do I know my true self? If anyone knows how to fool me, it’s me.”

“Jesus...” Clarissa whispered.

“Yeah. The consequences of self-deception are potentially devastating.”

“That’s your deepest fear about me, isn’t it? And Kimiko has made you confront that entire concept.”

“Oh, it’s worse,” I said. “How do we even know when we’re deceiving ourselves? And what happens when that deception is revealed to us in some way?”

“Angie?”

“For one. But think about what happened when my self-deception was pierced by those photos Jocelyn sent me.”

“You were nearly catatonic.”

“So the question is, what ELSE am I deceiving myself about.”

“You and me?”

“I honestly believe we’ve been fully open and fully honest with each other. Is there anything at all you don’t know about me?”

“One particular physical attribute!” Clarissa teased.

“You are fixated on that, Lissa!”

“Can we be serious for a moment?”

“We were, until you cracked wise.”

“True. Sorry about that.”

“It’s OK.”

“Do you understand why?”

I nodded, “It’s one thing to be penetrated by Glenda’s tongue or fingers, or even a dildo if you guys use one, but it’s a very different thing to be penetrated by actual flesh.”

“We don’t use a dildo, and we rarely use a vibrator, because we both prefer each other to some inanimate thing. I mean, would you want to use an artificial vagina?”

“Socks were my weapon of choice, so to speak, but that was more to keep things from getting too messy. And the answer is no, I wouldn’t.”

“And you know most girls have some kind of fear, even if it’s just a bit of trepidation, about being penetrated the first time.”

“I’ve heard that, yes. And I can see how that could be the case.”

“And think about the male view of sex versus the female view. Please don’t take this the wrong way, but for men it’s all about penetrating SOMETHING, whether it’s vagina, anus, or mouth. For women, if they’re with men, it’s all about being penetrated. Two very opposite notions.”

“So you and Glenda?”

“Mostly it’s kissing and oral, focusing on breasts, vagina, and clitoris. We don’t push our fingers in all that much. Glenda says some girls do, and even use large dildos, but that’s not us. And what I’m contemplating is, well, actually being penetrated. I won’t say that I’m scared, but I will say it’s a little unsettling. Think nervous virginal bride on her wedding night.”

“I think I’ve had the fortune, if you want to call it that, of the girls mostly chasing me. Even with Kristin, I set the lure, but she took it and ran with it. None of them have been anything more than a bit nervous, and horniness basically took care of that.”

“So your fantasy about Violet was largely constructed from your experience with the other virginal girls you’ve been with?”

“Clarissa, are you thinking you’re a virgin?”

“I am, in one sense, and I’m not just talking about societal opinion.”

“I hadn’t thought of it that way, I guess. You’ve obviously had sex.”

“Sure, but not sex, if that makes any sense at all.”

“It does, especially after the conversation this morning with Jocelyn and Liz. I was worried that Liz’s head would explode from the conversation!”

“If Mindy and Emmy didn’t cause that already, it won’t happen! Heck, she’s OK with you fucking all her friends!”

“I’m not OK with doing that!” I replied with a grin.

“You did with Hannah, but you’re turning down everyone else?”

“I did, and I am, and that includes Hannah’s request for a second time. That probably wasn’t the smartest thing I’ve done.”

“Maggie’s not upset, is she?”

“No. But why take that risk? It’s foolish for an hour or two of pleasure. It’s not like I can’t find other willing partners who aren’t friends with a girl I might end up being married to.”

“Are you really contemplating getting married right around graduation?”

“I contemplate today. I’ll worry about marriage when the time comes. Obviously, I’ll explore things with Maggie, but that’s in the future. We’ll see.”

“And the girls at church?”

I chuckled, “Once it’s clear that Tasha and I aren’t going to marry, that gaggle of girls will put on the full-court press. I’ll just wait.”

“I thought they knew.”

“They know Tasha and I aren’t a couple, but they think that’s because of her dad. Once she moves out and starts spending time with Nikolas, they’ll get the picture loud and clear. And that will be about the time Maggie moves here.”

“And starts catechism, giving those girls SERIOUS motivation to snare you as quickly as they can!”

There was a knock at the door and I called out for whoever it was to come in.

“Hey!” Kristin said.

“Hi!” I replied.

“Hey, Kristin!” Clarissa said. “I was just leaving!”

“Bummer!” I chuckled.

“Right, because your straight girlfriend is interested in taking a walk on the wild side!”

“My family would completely flip out,” Kristin said. “Being gay is tantamount to a death sentence with people in my grandpa’s generation. Saying someone is a fanook is a blood insult. They have to kill you or they’ll end up killed.”

“Sounds like the Russians of my grandfather’s generation. Funny enough, they don’t have nearly as much of an issue with lesbians.”

“Same. I think they want to watch!”

Clarissa laughed, “Just one more insane male fantasy! I’ll be back for dinner at 6:30pm.”

She got up from the couch and left the room, closing the door behind her.

“Shall we dance?” Kristin asked, locking the door.

“What dance music would you like?”

“How about Piano Man by Billy Joel.”

I nodded and got up and went to the stereo and removed the Slade album and replaced it with Piano Man. I set the tone arm on the platter, and Travelin’ Prayer came from the small speakers. I walked back to Kristin and stood in front of her.

“Vertical or horizontal?” I asked.

“Horizontal!” she declared playfully. “Unless you decided to go steady over break.”

“I didn’t.”

“Good, then show me how much you appreciate my help with computers.”

“I’d love to!”

We quickly removed our clothes and got into bed, and began our usual dance — long, slow, strokes and soft kisses, with a goal of reaching the absolute limits of my stamina. I was always amazed at just how pleasurable it was to move in her and my orgasms at the end were like cherries on top of sundaes, rather than explosions. The perfect end to a wonderful sensation.

Just before 6:30pm, we got out of bed, quickly showered, then went out to the common room to meet Clarissa and Clark. We agreed on Frisch’s, and went out to my car for the drive. We had a nice dinner and then decided to see the new Mel Brooks movie, To Be or Not to Be. It was hilarious and we all enjoyed it, and when the movie finished, we headed back to the dorm where Kristin and I resumed our dance.

January 8, 1984, McKinley, Ohio

On Saturday morning, Kristin and I had a final dance, after which she went back to her room while I showered, dressed, and changed the sheets on the bed. I gathered them and the towels we’d used and took them down to the laundry room, then met Clarissa so we could have breakfast together at the diner near the school. After breakfast, we headed to the Quick Mart so I could restock soft drinks and snacks.

“Hi, Mike,” Nancy said as we walked in. “Hi, Clarissa.”

“Hi,” I replied. “Did you have a good break?”

“I worked! But otherwise, yes. You?”

“I did.”

Clarissa and I gathered the things we needed, and I saw Paula who was shopping. She waved and I noticed she was sporting a diamond engagement ring, so I walked over to so that I could congratulate her.

“Congratulations,” I said, nodding towards her hand.

“Thanks! My boyfriend surprised me with the ring for Christmas. I totally wasn’t expecting it.”

“I’m happy for you. When is the wedding?”

“Sometime this Summer. My mom took over, so it is no longer under my control!”

I chuckled, “I’ve seen that movie. At my old church, when one of the girls got engaged, her mom and her godmother basically took over and decided everything from start to finish. I wouldn’t be surprised if they gave the couple an agenda for their honeymoon!”

Paula laughed, “One item? Sex?”

I chuckled, “Probably. I need to go, but congratulations again.”

“Thanks!”

I took the few remaining items up to the counter and Nancy rang everything up and then bagged it. I thanked her, and Clarissa and I carried the bags back to the dorm.

“Are you going to karate today?” she asked.

“Yes. I’ve missed two weeks and I can tell! What time is Glenda getting in today?”

“Around 2:00pm, so you’ll be at karate.”

“Then I’ll see you both after karate so you can have some time together.”

After we put everything in my room, we headed to the bookstore to buy our books and empty our bank accounts. I was very annoyed at the cost of textbooks, and I could fathom no possible reason for the cost other than a captive market and price gouging. I was all for capitalism, but monopolies like the campus bookstore and the book publishers were where the government ought to step in. The truly sick part was, the bookstore was run by the government, or at least under contract to the government, because Taft was a State school.

Clarissa and I both skipped the ‘supplies’ section and after we put our books in our rooms, we walked to Emmerson’s Drugs which had a better selection and significantly lower prices on everything from folders to pencils. We took everything back to our rooms and then Clarissa joined me in my room to relax until lunch. Several of our friends had arrived by then, and they joined us at the burger joint.

After lunch we all gathered in my room to listen to music until it was time for me to leave for karate. Robby and Lee hadn’t arrived, so I walked to the dojo alone. I had to really focus, as more than two weeks away had taken me out of my routine. I should have practiced at home, or even gone to my old dojo, but I’d been too busy. Fortunately, I didn’t get reprimanded for anything, and just after 3:00pm I was on my way back to the dorm.

When I arrived back on campus, I saw Sophia, Robby, and Lee in the parking lot and went over to greet them. I greeted the guys with handshakes, and Sophia and I hugged and exchanged a soft kiss.

“Did you hear from Milena and Joel?” Sophia asked.

“There was a postcard in the mail today. It was one of those ‘Wish you were here’ postcards with those words crossed out with a red felt-tip pen!”

All three of my friends laughed.

“Yeah, you probably don’t want your former lover on your honeymoon!” Robby declared.

“I didn’t take it personally,” I chuckled. “I know she’s messing with me. They’re supposed to be home tomorrow because school starts on Monday.”

“You’re taking her class, right?”

“Which ought to be interesting! I think it’ll be fun, but it’s going to be a little weird.”

“Because you’re the student who got to fuck his teacher?” Lee asked with grin.

“She wasn’t my teacher when we were seeing each other before she found Joel!”

“A distinction without a difference! You still bagged the hot music teacher!”

“And what would YOU know about that?” I asked.

“Hey,” Lee continued, “I hear you said I had good taste in men!”

“Maybe,” I replied evenly.

“How was karate?”

“OK. I basically blew it off for the entire break. I’m guessing you guys did the same?”

“Yeah. Too much stuff going on and there isn’t a dojo close to where we live.”

“Anything interesting happen this week?” Sophia asked.

“Well, I met with the bishop and he asked me to start teaching Sunday School.”

“There’s a no-brainer!” Robby said. “You are really good at explaining stuff.”

“Thanks. He also made it clear he wants me to be a deacon.”

“That isn’t a surprise given your deacon had a heart attack and won’t be back.”

“He’s safe until he gets married,” Sophia said. “Mike is about as likely to stay celibate as I am!”

“I also talked to Angie’s therapist,” I said.

“Whoa!” Robby exclaimed. “You called?”

“She called me. Well, she had Angie’s mom call me. She wanted to get my version of events as to what led to Angie’s two meltdowns.”

“How did that go?”

“Angie’s therapist asked me to meet with Angie a week from today. It’ll be at Angie’s church in Loveland with her priest, my priest, and the therapist there.”

“What’s THAT about?”

“She wants to see me, and her therapist thinks it might help. I think it could go badly, but her therapist thinks because they have Angie’s anxiety and mood swings under control with medication, it can’t hurt.”

“Is she coming back to school?” Sophia asked.

“I can’t imagine she is,” I replied. “The implication I got was she needs a low-stress environment and college sure isn’t that. Nor is primary education. I think I’d go even crazier than I am if I had to teach Sunday School to the first through fifth grade kids!”

“I can deal with the nursery or the Junior High kids,” Sophia said. “But grade school kids? I agree with Mike. I mean, I’ll be fine with my own, but a classroom full? No way!”

We arrived at the dorm and rode the elevator up to the eighth floor. When we stepped off the elevator I saw Clarissa sitting on the floor next to my door. She was slouched and looked very unhappy. Sophia, Robby, Lee, and I exchanged looks and the three of them went down the hall.

“Hey, Lissa,” I said. “What’s wrong?”

She stood up and shook her head. I unlocked the door to my room, gently pulled her into the room, then shut and locked the door. I dropped my bag with my karate gear next to the door and led her to the couch. She collapsed onto the couch and I sat down next to her and put my arm around her.

“What’s wrong?” I asked in the gentlest voice I could manage.

“Glenda told me she was accepted to the School of the Art Institute in Chicago and she’s going. Alone.”

Which, I assumed, had brought a crashing end to Clarissa’s first love affair.

“Did you know she applied?”

Clarissa shook her head, “No, I knew she applied to schools in Columbus and Cincinnati. She didn’t tell me about Chicago.”

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 64 Am I Allowed To Be Nervous

January 20, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “I actually think that might be a good idea,” Doctor Mercer said when we spoke on Friday afternoon. “What kind of time limits would you suggest?” “I think I’d like to wait until I see you on the 11th. I’ll see Angie a dozen times by then, and I’ll have a better idea what to tell you.” “How is she?” “I know it might not have seemed like it, but it lifted her spirits and made her very happy.” “That’s good to hear. I take it there were no ill effects from...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 57 Domino Theory

January 1, 1984, McKinley, Ohio Chloe melted into my arms and molded her body against mine and we began swaying to All Out of Love. I very much enjoyed the full-body contact, but something just felt different. I realized that I, too, had been enthralled by our duet, but it had worn off. I wondered if that was true for Chloe as well. If it had, then she wouldn’t ask; if it hadn’t, and she did, I’d promised to say ‘yes’. And truth be told, I knew I wanted to feel the body which was currently...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 72 Status Reports

March 20, 1984, Rutherford, Ohio I arrived at the halfway house in Rutherford just after 2:30pm on Tuesday afternoon wearing my cassock to keep up appearances. I was shown into Mr. Gilbert’s office. He offered coffee which I accepted and we sat down in a pair of chairs next to his desk. “Is everything OK?” I asked. “Yes, it is. I just wanted a word with you so I could thank you for the help you’ve given Paul Reynolds. I started doing this six years ago when I retired from GE, and we’ve...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 7 Substitution

June 9, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “Unbelievable,” Milena sighed as she snuggled close. We were sitting very close together in bed, leaning against pillows which were against the wall, the sheet pulled up only to our thighs, and wine glasses in our hands. “What?” I asked. “That something so gentle and so slow could make me feel better than a night of crazy sex.” “Isn’t that what happened with Joel?” I asked. “You told me that mostly it was just making love then talking for hours.” “But we’re...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 29 All Grown Up

September 24, 1983, McKinley, Ohio On Saturday morning, I was up at 4:30am, quickly showered, dressed, and left Sophia in my bed while I went to the lab to take down the readings and complete the checklists. I was back about 6:10am and Sophia was still sleeping. I changed into my running clothes and headed back outside. As I ran, I thought about my conversation with Sophia the previous evening. I didn’t have an easy answer for Angie, any more than I’d had one for Jocelyn, and I was...

September 27, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “That was not what I expected, AT ALL!” I said when Robby, Lee, Angie and I left for karate on Tuesday afternoon. “Two kilos is distribution amounts,” Robby said. “Forget expulsion, he’s going to do some serious jail time unless he has a good lawyer who can arrange for him to cop a plea.” “The funny thing is,” Lee said, “he had such a rep as a partier, I wouldn’t be shocked if that was his personal stash!” “Oh, come on!” Robby exclaimed. “Do you realize...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 23 Labor Day Weekend Part II

September 3, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio “So now what?” she asked after about ten minutes of silence. A lot had run through my mind in those ten minutes. Jocelyn and I were two very different people, and I wondered if ‘Jos’ and ‘Mik’ actually still existed, or if they, too, had died as a direct result of that accident. And if they had, then what? Was there ANYTHING which could be salvaged from the past? Was Jocelyn even capable of having that kind of friendship? Her psyche was a complete mess,...

January 4, 1984, Rutherford, Ohio “How was New Year’s in Indianapolis?” I asked Dale when we sat down with our food at A&W. “Clara and I broke up,” he replied. “Whoa!” Jocelyn gasped. “What happened?” “It was building for the past few months,” Dale replied. “I’m not ready to be tied down as far as she wanted to tie me down.” “I don’t know,” I smirked, “I hear that can be fun!” Dale nodded, “Oh, it can!” Clarissa and I laughed and Jocelyn rolled her eyes as she had done so often...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 42 Kentucky for Christmas

November 13, 1983, McKinley Ohio Kimiko had spent the night with me on Saturday, and Clarissa joined the two of us to go to church. The previous night, when Clarissa had spoken my thoughts, we’d simply hugged, she’d kissed my cheek, and left, letting Kimiko know I was waiting for her. The previous twenty-four hours had been almost surreal, but also clarifying. But it wasn’t over just yet — I had my date with Tasha, which I felt was going to be equally enlightening. Kimiko hadn’t said...

September 16, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “Are you sure, Tasha?” I asked. “I’ve never done that and I’m not sure I know how.” “The book said some people enjoy it while others don’t. Will you try?” “I think I read the same book,” I replied. “The Joy of Sex?” “Yes, that was the book. So you know how it’s supposed to work?” “Mechanically, yes, but Tasha...” “Mishka,” she said gently. “You are my first lover, and the one I want to experience everything with. Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 2 Son of a Vich

May 28, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio Later that morning, I stared at the phone, trying to decide exactly what I was going to say to Janey. My problem was, that even asking her to have lunch was fraught with problems. If we were seen together, AND it got back to Tasha, or worse, Deacon Vasily, that would be the end of any possible relationship with Tasha. And the more I thought about it, the more convinced I was that I didn’t want to do that. That said, I didn’t want to have the conversation with...

November 22, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio I’d expected an immediate reaction but for a good thirty seconds, you could have heard a pin drop in the sitting room. The silence quickly grew oppressive and suffocating. I carefully watched Deacon Vasily’s face and specifically his eyes, and waited for the eruption which was bubbling just below the surface, but his wife beat him to it. “Sasha,” she asked softly, a tear running down her cheek, “are you sure?” “Yes, Mom, I’m sure.” “How did this...

Hi, Tasha! Hi, Clarissa!” “Hi! Milena, where’s your intended?” I asked. “His friends have custody of him until the wedding starts at 8:00pm! December 17, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio As soon as we started kissing, Hannah started tugging at my clothes, pulling my polo shirt from my jeans. Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 59 Analysis

January 5, 1984, Milford, Ohio “Should I lie on the couch?” I asked with a silly grin. “If you feel more comfortable. Some people do better face to face, some do better when they can’t see the therapist, others prefer side-by-side. You’ll learn that for what you’ll call your ‘bedside manner’, no two patients will respond the same way. You and one other young man who shall remain nameless to protect the guilty, just want straight shooting, no mincing words. Others need enough embroidery to...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 66 A ManToMan Talk

February 11, 1984, West Monroe, Ohio After I left Doctor Mercer’s office, I stopped at a deli on Route 50 in Milford, bought a cup of coffee and a bagel, and then headed towards West Monroe. I was still chuckling to myself over the revelation that Emmy had told all of my sister’s friends about my measurements, and apparently my prowess, and that had led to Mindy’s full-court press, as well as attention from the other girls, which, until they turned sixteen, had been a bit of flirting, but...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 76 Or Is It Triple Now

April 2, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “«Ты говоришь по-русски?»” I asked when I recovered from the double shock. “«Удивлены»?” “I don’t think surprised even scratches the surface!” I replied in English, not wanting to give up any nuances of my speech. “What’s your full name?” “Larissa Sergeyevna Federova. I was named for ‘Lara’ in Doctor Zhivago, but I go by Laura Sera Bragg. My parents divorced when I was little and both remarried. My mom changed her and my legal name to Bragg, which is my...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 5 Milena and Joel

June 3, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “You’re serious?” Milena asked, incredulous. “I am; you figured it out, and this is the talk we SHOULD have had.” She shook her head, “Now you have ME thinking about whether we should do this or not.” “Which was my entire point.” “Not to interrupt this moment of clarity,” Deb said quietly, “but is that invitation open?” I chuckled, “I’ll leave the answer to that to the pianist. Her opinion may have changed.” Milena sighed, “How the hell did a twenty-year...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 31 One Day At A Time

September 30, 1983, McKinley, Ohio Since the invention of the kiss, there have been five kisses rated the most passionate, the most pure. This one left them all behind. Well, perhaps that was a bit of an exaggeration, but compared to other first kisses, this one was certainly memorable — a soft touching of lips, a light hug with Kimiko’s small, silk-covered breasts brushing lightly against me, and her hand lightly on my back. Kimiko broke the kiss, looked me in the eyes, and whispered,...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 47 Racial Purity

December 1, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “You really object to Emmy and Clark being together because they’re from different races?!” I asked, completely taken aback. “I’m sorry,” Kimiko replied meekly. “I was trying to describe how Japanese felt about mixed-race children, especially those of black American soldiers and Japanese women. But it’s really any mixed-race children or relationships, because they are not pure Japanese.” “So if you and I were to marry, and have kids who were half-Japanese,...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 17 Found Out

August 7, 1983, McKinley, Ohio The phone in my room rang late Sunday afternoon while Milena and I were relaxing and listening to music. “Hi, Mikey!” “Hi, Liz! What’s up?” “Guess whose parents came home WAY earlier than expected? Three guesses, and the first two don’t count!” “«Говно». Maggie’s.” “Right the first time.” “And?” “Grounded for two centuries, I think.” “Wonderful,” I sighed. “It’s worse, Mikey.” “How could it be worse?” “Her dad found the books you gave her and the...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 16 Sing Me a Love Song

July 28, 1983, McKinley, Ohio On Thursday evening I was sitting in my room, practicing my guitar after having spoken with Tasha and confirmed our date for Sunday. Just after 9:00pm, there was a knock at the door. “It’s unlocked! Come in!” The door opened and Milena walked in, closing the door behind her. “Hey!” I replied. “What’s up?” “Got some time for me?” “Always. What can I do for you?” “Sing me a love song and then make love to me?” “Your wish is my command!” I grinned. “Come sit...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 9 Rules Infraction

June 25, 1983, McKinley, Ohio I awoke to someone pounding on my door and calling my name. A quick glance at the clock showed it was 2:50am. I quickly got out of bed, pulled on shorts and a t-shirt and went to the door. I opened it to see a girl in a robe. “What’s up?” “Cecilia said to come get you. One of the girls is really sick!” “Did someone call for an ambulance?” I asked. “I don’t know.” “Call right now. Use my phone. Where are they?” “243!” I hurried down the hall into the...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 50 Another End To A Semester

December 16, 1983, McKinley, Ohio Exams had gone well, and Clarissa, Sandy, and I didn’t have a Friday exam because of our work in the lab only had an evaluation, which we’d each received earlier in the week. We’d all received excellent reviews, which meant an A for the course for each of us. Our stats exam had actually been a breeze, as had the biochemistry exam. The psychology exam was moderately tough, but I was sure I’d achieved at least a B, which meant I would have an A for the course....

November 25, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio On Friday morning I drank coffee while Clarissa ate breakfast, because I was having breakfast at Jocelyn’s. “I never asked,” Clarissa said, “but how is turkey with all the fixings allowed during the fast?” “If the US were Orthodox, the harvest festival would have been in October, as it is in Canada,” I grinned. “So our bishops make accommodation. ROCOR doesn’t have this issue because they follow the Old Calendar, and their fast doesn’t start until the...

June 18, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “Becky, this is my friend Milena; Milena, Becky.” “Hi!” Milena said. “I hope I’m not intruding.” “Hi,” Becky replied. “You aren’t. Mike told me you were going to hang out with us tonight.” “Do you drink wine?” Becky laughed, “My pastor would have a cow, but he’s not here!” Milena laughed, “And shacking up with Mike, THAT would be OK?” “Well, no!” Becky laughed, blushing slightly. Good Medicine Freshman YearChapter 5 Matchmaker Matchmaker Make Me A Match

May 30, 1981, West Monroe, Ohio It was with more than a little trepidation that I drove home from karate class. I didn’t really want to talk to April, but I knew I had to. The bottom line was church. It didn’t matter to a lot of people, but it mattered to me. I feared that my conversation with April was simply going to go around in circles, and end with her crying again. Unfortunately, I didn’t see how that could be avoided. “You should go see her,” Mom said when I came downstairs after my...

March 30, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “Sorry about earlier,” she said. “My roommate was being a bitch.” “Something specific?” I asked. “She’s been on the rag ever since our second week here. Guy trouble. I guess she thought you were trying to use me.” “I can see why she would think that,” I replied. “You and I don’t know each other except basically by sight and name, I sang to you, and you came to my room.” “If I were totally clueless about life, I could see it. MAGIC MEDICINE Christopher Halstead was at the end of his tether. He was only 50 years old but felt deep down in his soul that his useful life had come to an end. To understand why it is necessary to go back some twenty-five years. In 1992 Christopher married his childhood sweetheart Amy. He and Amy had grown up in adjacent houses; attended the same schools; and had had an unspoken 'understanding' from their teens. They only occasion they spent time apart was whilst they were at...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 4 A Good Reason

June 1, 1983, McKinley, Ohio Wednesday at the Quick Mart was very much like Tuesday, though there were no deliveries, so I had time to work through a number of items on Mr. Sokolov’s list. That kept me busy, and away from Nancy except for when it was time for her breaks. She apologized again and I replied as I had before, just telling her to take her break. Maybe I was being a jerk, but I was honestly quite upset with her, and really didn’t think there was much to talk about. When my shift...

Or from Mindy and Emmy?” “That kind of thinking is a...

October 16, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “I started dating someone,” I said to Tasha as we relaxed in the whirlpool at Doctor Blahnik’s house. “You’re not cheating on her, are you Mikhail Petrovich?” “No. It’s not THAT serious, and it won’t be anytime soon, if it ever is. July 23, 1983, McKinley, Ohio Just as I had when Nancy told me that her mom had put her on the Pill, I missed a shift due to being completely surprised by Maggie’s question. I recovered enough to find the correct gear, and willed my heart to stop beating rapidly. The silence was deafening, but I needed to think about how I could answer her question. March 15, 1984, Gettysburg and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania “You’re OK?” Clarissa asked when she and I got out of bed on Thursday morning. “Yes. Just kissing was fine, Lissa. Let’s get our showers and meet Jocelyn. We need to get on the road by 6:30am so we can be in Philadelphia by 10:00am.” We both quickly showered and dressed, then we met Jocelyn in the hotel lobby. Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 12 Conflagration

July 5, 1983, McKinley, Ohio As I showered after karate, I wondered exactly what Angie had meant when she said that she’d changed, and what that meant for the future. Angie had told me that her counselor had advised against starting a relationship, so perhaps this was just Angie’s way of telling me that what Clarissa had suggested might be true — that Angie was playing the ‘long game’ and this was simply the next step. That made more sense than anything, but it also meant I needed to be...

April 8, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “Natalya Vasilyevna Antonova, please meet Larissa Sergeyevna Federova,” I said. I laughed as the two girls instantly switched to Russian and I had to focus to catch everything that was said. Clarissa smirked and rolled her eyes, and I just shrugged. The gist of the conversation was hometowns, parents, churches, majors, and to Tasha’s obvious shock, Lara’s age. “Perhaps we should switch to English so Sveta isn’t left out,” Tasha said in English. “Mike looked...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 21 Back to Class

August 28, 1983, McKinley, Ohio When I got up on Sunday morning, I showered and dressed, and then Kristin and I left my room and I found a note from Angie on the corkboard next to my door. It said she was getting a ride to church from the same woman who had picked her up the previous night and I shouldn’t wait for her. I shrugged, locked the door, and gave Kristin a quick kiss. She headed down the hall towards her room and I walked over to the elevators and pushed the ‘Down’ button. An...

In other words, you made me promise not to do it even if you changed your mind! And I made that promise!” “I can’t change my mind?” “You were very clear that I was responsible for you NOT doing that.” “But isn’t that up to me?” I nodded, “As an adult, in charge of her own decisions, it is. She really could pick anything.” “What happened with the baby’s father?” Clarissa asked. “My dad, Timmy’s dad, and two attorneys worked out the deal. June 5, 1983, McKinley, Ohio My alarm rang on Sunday morning and when I reached over to shut it off, Milena groaned softly, stretched, and turned to face me, her glorious breasts rubbing against my chest. “Hi,” she said sheepishly. “What’s wrong?” “Nothing! September 3, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio Tasha was very quiet on the drive home from Jackson Lake, and I wasn’t sure what to say to her, so I stayed quiet as well. When we arrived at my house, we exchanged a perfunctory kiss. “Are you OK?” I asked. “Yes,” she replied. “I’ll see you tomorrow at church.” I got out of the Volvo and went into the house. January 14, 1984, Loveland, Ohio On Saturday morning, after breakfast, I’d said goodbye to Clarissa and gotten in my car for the drive to Loveland. Clarissa was doing OK, and I’d managed to spend a few hours over the course of the week with Sophia, and had a chance to be the octopus for Kimiko. Milena, Deb, Blaine, and Royce would join us as well. “Maggie and I don’t really flirt,” I replied. “It’s more like trying to agree on terms.” “Of surrender?” Clarissa laughed. “Of her virginity?” I laughed, “Those terms are well-known and agreed — engagement ring, wedding ring,...
