March 30, 1984, McKinley, Ohio

“What are we doing with a full day off?” Clarissa asked when I returned from my run on Friday morning.

“I had no plans except to relax until our concert tonight. Most everyone has at least one exam today, so it can just be us, if you want.”

“Get your shower and come back to bed.”

I quickly showered, dried off, and climbed into bed with Clarissa. She snuggled close and I put my arm around her as she got into our usual cuddling position, with her left arm and left leg over me, and her head on my chest.

“Would you be upset if I told you this would be what I missed the most in a future where we weren’t married?”

“Of course I wouldn’t be upset. It’s no surprise, really.”

“Because of what happened in Marietta?”

“More because of your reaction to what we did, than what we did. Being tentative and feeling out of sorts seems to be somewhat common, if we follow your logic about feeling like you were fourteen.”

“You mean because I haven’t talked to you about it? I mean except for the next morning? And then slept in my room two nights?”

“I knew you were uncomfortable with the entire idea when we did it, but I also knew you felt we had to at least try. And all things considered, I’d say you were correct. We did what you needed to do. And I’m happy about that.”

“And what is it you need?” Clarissa asked.

“You in my life, as my closest friend and confidante. Let’s not do anything to mess that up, please.”

“Could we? At this point?”

“I would never have imagined Jocelyn and I could blow apart our relationship, and yet we did. Granted, there was an outside force, but we did blow it apart, not the elderly driver of the car who hit Jocelyn. So, yes, I think we could, which is why I’m cautious and on guard about our relationship.”

“But you’d do anything I asked.”

“Yes, and so would you. Not because you would do anything, but because I would never ask you for something I felt you couldn’t do.”

“But you have no such restrictions on me asking you.”

“I wouldn’t do anything I felt would hurt you, but I also don’t think you’d ask for something like that.”

“Probably not. Have you thought about why I couldn’t have orgasms from intercourse?”

“I just assumed that your apprehension and nervousness, combined with the fact that you’re a lesbian, interfered with physical pleasure. You didn’t have difficulty having orgasms during cunnilingus, and oral stimulation of your nipples seemed to give you pleasure.”

Clarissa laughed softly, “Nice word choices! But I guess I said ‘intercourse’ so you responded in a similar fashion.”

“One possible solution, which you might not have considered, is spooning, which would allow me to manually stimulate your clitoris while we engaged in intercourse. But I don’t think the issue is whether you have orgasms from intercourse, or even whether or not we have intercourse. It’s a question of me meeting a very, very specific physical, psychological, and emotional need. And THAT is your struggle.”

“Why do you think that?”

“You didn’t have feelings of revulsion, or at least you didn’t express any, with regard to fellatio or intercourse, and you didn’t have a panic attack, or whatever, at the thought. Sure, you felt uneasy, nervous, and maybe a bit scared, but that’s not really a source of concern. I think you COULD have sex with me again, even long-term. The question in your mind, at least as I see it, isn’t about being ABLE to have sex with me; you proved you could. It’s a question of whether sex with me meets your deepest-seated need with regard to sexual intimacy. And neither of us are sure I can do that.”

“I think you’re right.”

“And to sort that out, I think you need to have at least a second lover.”

“Are you telling me to get laid, Petrovich?”

“You’ve told ME to get laid!”

Clarissa laughed softly, “So I have. You think I need to test my feelings?”

“I do. I think that will tell you, and us, what we need to know.”

“I suppose it might. You’re talking about a fling, aren’t you? My version of Emmy?”

“If you want to look at it that way, yes.”

“I have a condition.”

“I’m listening.”

“Actually,” she giggled, something she rarely did, “two.”

“Go on,” I chuckled.

“First, though it’s not what I was originally going to ask, you agree to have your fling with Violet!”

“Which you assumed I was very likely to do anyway,” I replied. “Though I’m still not sure. What’s the second condition?”

“That after we each have our fling, you and I spend an entire day in bed, making love. You show me every possible way we can love each other physically. Either the first time for the rest of our lives, or the last.”

“Nothing like making it dramatic, Lissa,” I replied.

“But it’s true, right?” she asked.

“Yes. And we agreed to be open and clear about everything.”

“So we each have our fling, then we put everything to the test.”

“I’m curious about why you think I should have a fling.”

“Fulfill the damned fantasy, Petrovich! You’ll regret it forever if you don’t! Nobody is going to get hurt, and you’re going to enjoy it!”

“Assuming the fantasy matches reality.”

“I think this one will. It’s right in your wheelhouse. The threesome wasn’t. Not to mention you WANT to do it, and even DREAMED about doing it!”

“True.”

“Then do we have an agreement?”

“I take it you have someone in mind?”

“Yes. A bisexual girl who I’m VERY attracted to.”

“Interesting.”

“Not going to ask?”

“You’ll tell me when you think you need to tell me, if you need to tell me.”

“Trust?”

“Implicit. If you say you did, then you did; I will never doubt you or question you.”

“If that’s not true love, I’m not sure what would be.”

“I hope there is never any doubt at all in that regard; and I mean ever, as in forever.”

“I can’t imagine how I could doubt you love me, Petrovich. And if that doesn’t work out, maybe I’ll find Leslie and Jennifer and have a threesome of my own!”

I laughed, “Now THAT would be interesting. But you know my take on that.”

“I do. But I don’t have the same fantasy in mind, so it might be different. But I think my first idea is better.”

“Whatever you think, Lissa; I mean that.”

“Thanks. Did you decide what to do tonight?”

“I’ll pick someone to sing to,” I replied.

Clarissa laughed softly, “Because it’s been nearly two weeks since you had sex and you need a groupie?”

“I don’t NEED a groupie,” I replied. “Consider it like ‘catch and release’ fishing!”

“Well, you certainly have a long fishing pole and a fantastic lure in your singing voice!”

“You are bad, Lissa! Shall we have breakfast?”

“How about another twenty minutes of cuddling?”

“I’m all yours!”

About twenty minutes later we got out of bed, Clarissa showered, and then we headed to breakfast. After we ate, we went back to my room to hang out, and our friends drifted in and out for the rest of the day, until the gang assembled just before dinner, everyone having completed their midterms. We all went to the cafeteria, then returned to the dorm where José and I had a quick practice session with only Clarissa and Rebekah as our audience, then had Kimiko come in to help us practice with what would be our first number. After running through it twice, we went out to the lounge to get ready for our concert.

Just before 7:00pm, a large crowd had gathered, at least for the lounge, and I scanned to find someone to sing to, settling on a very pretty blonde from New Hampshire named Charlotte Peterson, a Freshman from the 5th floor of Rickenbacker who was there with two female friends. My target chosen, I concentrated on our opening number, which José had suggested and convinced Kimiko to help us learn. As the minute hand reached the hour, I nodded to José and we began playing «上を向いて歩こう» (Ue o Muite Arukō; I Look Up As I Walk), better known in English as Sukiyaki.

I knew the tune, because I had an album by A Taste of Honey from 1980 which had the song, albeit with very different words from the translation of the Japanese that Kimiko had given us. She had written out the Japanese words in rōmaji, a way of writing the phonetic sound of Japanese in ‘Roman’ characters, or what I would call the Latin Alphabet. She told us that everyone in Japan had to learn how to write that way in school, but it was rarely used except in the case where foreigners would need to be able to read, such as street signs or passports.

The song, at least in Japanese, was effectively a protest song against American troops in Japan, and to me, it conveyed exactly the feelings Kimiko had about Japanese culture. The version I’d heard, by A Taste of Honey, was about a love gone bad. That idea fit, in some ways, my relationship with Kimiko, as our days as lovers seemed to be over, though we remained close friends.

When we finished the song, we were rewarded with loud applause, and when it died down, shifted to our more usual repertoire. First, we played Estudio en Mi de Rubira, with me playing rhythm for José as I usually did. When we finished that, it was my turn to take over, and we played Every Woman In The World, and I sang to Charlotte. I caught Clarissa’s smirk out of the corner of my eye as she quickly figured out who I was singing to.

Next came Piano Man, followed by The Entertainer, and She’s Always a Woman. By the time we finished the third Billy Joel song, I knew I had Charlotte’s full attention and probably had her right where I would have wanted her, had I truly been trying for a groupie. It was time for José to lead again, doing our jazz riff of Piel Canela, which lasted nearly ten minutes and was met with huge applause, as we’d gotten a lot better.

We took a break, and I was aware that Charlotte’s eyes never left me as I got a drink, then went to sit down. José led off the next set, singing Yesterday and Horse with No Name, which I’d taught him, and then I took over with Keep On Loving You.

“Next,” I announced, “we’re going to do a sing-along, and we want ALL of you to sing with us!”

I led off with Sweet Caroline and José played rhythm, as everyone sang the song enthusiastically. We applauded ourselves when we finished, and I nodded to José who led off, once again, with Estudio en Mi de Rubira, but this time we riffed on it for about ten minutes, before we each sang one more song — José sang Keep on Loving You and I sang Earth Angel.

The gathered students demanded an encore, so José and I played our pre-planned encore, a silly duet of I Got You Babe, with me singing falsetto, while we both sang to Robby and Lee. We’d only practiced that privately, so not even Clarissa knew it was going to happen. Robby and Lee were laughing so hard they nearly fell off the couch. When we finished, both barely able to keep from laughing as we sang, there was raucous applause and cheering. We put our guitars away and grabbed some Cokes from my fridge, then went back out to our adoring fans.

“That was the funniest thing I’ve heard in a LONG time,” Robby said, clapping his hand on my shoulder.

“For sure!” Pete said, shaking his head. “I thought Fran was going to wet her pants she was laughing so hard!”

“I think Sophia DID wet her pants,” Lee declared. “She ran off to her room! How did you guys come up with THAT schtick?”

“We were talking about groupies and singing to girls to get them into bed, and well, one thing followed after the other!”

“I knew it!” Lee grinned. “You’re trying to steal my boyfriend!”

“Maybe not,” I chuckled.

“I do have to say it’s cool you guys can do that without completely freaking out. We get grief if we hold hands or put our arms around each other in public.”

“Fuck society,” José said. “They have their heads up their butts, and that isn’t OUR problem. You two are our best guy friends here, and we don’t care who knows it!”

“What he said,” I agreed. “And I need to go talk with someone!”

José laughed, “Have fun!”

I winked and went over to where Charlotte was standing with three other girls.

“Hi!” I said. “I’m Mike.”

“Charlotte, Ann, Stacy, and Tracy,” Charlotte said, nodding first to a brunette, then to a redhead, then to a blonde. “You’re awesome! I wish we’d come to the earlier concerts!”

“Why didn’t you?” I asked.

“We figured the Freshman concert would be lame, so we skipped it, and nobody told us about the ones you did here. We skipped the other concert and people told us how great it was, so when we heard you were going to play, we decided to come up and hope there was room. I can’t believe there are over a hundred people here!”

“There would be more if we had more room,” I said. “But we didn’t want to do anything formal this semester. We did get asked to do the Freshman concert in the Fall.”

“Are you going to do another one of these?” Tracy asked.

“Probably the first Friday in May,” I replied.

“Are you going to be RA next year?” Ann asked.

I nodded, “I was rehired for the Fall, yes.”

“We should try to move to this floor, Char,” she said. “It seems WAY cooler than five!”

“It’s a bit late to do that,” I said. “But you can go to the housing office on Monday and try. Who are the roommates?”

“Stacy and me,” Charlotte replied, “and Ann and Tracy.”

“Would you like a Coke?” I asked.

“Uh, sure,” Charlotte said.

I struggled not to even smirk when Ann used her shoulder to encourage Charlotte, who followed me to my room. I offered her a choice and she chose a root beer, which I opened for her and handed to her.

“You sing really well,” she said.

“Thanks.”

“Were you really singing to me?”

I nodded, “I was. It helps to find a pretty girl to sing to.”

“I see you with a really pretty dark-haired girl all the time.”

“Clarissa? She’s a very close friend who just broke up with her girlfriend.”

“Girlfr ... oh! Uhm, well, uhm, I didn’t realize.”

“It’s not like they have to wear a uniform or have it tattooed on their foreheads! Did you know about Robby and Lee before we sang to them?”

“I thought that was just goofing around. I’ve seen those guys together, but I thought they were just friends.”

“That wouldn’t have made the inside joke nearly as funny,” I said. “Our other close friends were the ones rolling on the floor laughing.”

“I guess that was a surprise?”

“Totally. Only José and I knew about it. Want to listen to some music?”

“Sure!”

“There are a couple of shelves full of albums from my collection. Pick something you like.”

“Oh, wow!” she gasped. “It’s huge!”

I couldn’t help but laugh out loud.

“Oops!” Charlotte said, blushing slightly, “that didn’t come out quite right!”

“I shouldn’t have laughed,” I replied. “But I couldn’t help it.”

“If your voice is up to it, I’d rather hear you sing.”

“I think I can manage,” I replied. “On the desk is my sheet music. I can play anything in the three-ring binder. Things in the folder are pieces I’m still learning to play; those are mostly classical.”

She went over to the desk and flipped through the three-ring binder and handed it to me. I nodded, took out my guitar and sat down in one of the chairs while she sat on the couch. I played Only the Good Die Young and then her second selection, I Write the Songs. When I finished, she asked for Keep On Loving You, which I played, ensuring I looked into her eyes as much, and as deeply, as possible.

“Totally awesome,” she said.

“Thanks, and now I think it’s probably better if you take advantage of my huge ... album collection.”

Charlotte laughed and blushed again, “I’m never going to live that down, am I?”

“I’d never tease you in front of your friends without you agreeing it was OK.”

“Cool!”

She looked over the collection and chose If You Leave Me Now, a compilation album by Chicago. I took it from her and put it on the turntable. The first song was the album’s title track, and when it started playing, I turned to Charlotte and held out my arms.

“Care to dance?” I asked.

She nodded and melted into my arms, pressing herself against me, giving me a very good idea of what was hiding under the loose blouse and baggy jeans. I had knowingly and purposefully activated my weakness, with the intent of not following through, but with Charlotte’s body pressed against me, the fact I actually hadn’t had sex in two weeks, after having it very regularly, tempted me to throw caution to the wind and have fun with Charlotte.

About halfway through the song, she lifted her head from my shoulder and her eyes invited me to kiss her, which I did, tasting strawberry lip gloss before our tongues met and twirled around each other. As our kiss deepened, I slid my hands down her back and cupped her very firm butt. Charlotte didn’t object, and in fact flexed her hips a bit to rub against me.

We continued kissing and dancing as If You Leave Me Now gave way to Saturday in the Park, and my power to resist gave way to a burning desire to take Charlotte to bed and ravish her. I wasn’t sure what HER goal was, so I decided to test things by sliding my right hand up from her butt, under the edge of her loose blouse, and onto the smooth skin of her lower back. When Charlotte tugged my t-shirt from my jeans and slipped her hand under it, I knew I was on the right track.

Sing a Healing Song

Sing a Healing Song Chapter 1 It all started with a trip to Ireland. Well, not "all". You could say some of it started the day I was born, and named Matthew D'Arcy, the only son of Mark D'Arcy, a football player, and his wife Annette. And maybe some of it started later that same day when Annette died from complications of giving birth to me. I was always a sickly kid, and my dad eventually gave up football so he could look after me better, and I have never doubted his love...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 65 Developing A Relationship

February 2, 1984, McKinley, Ohio On Thursday, I heard the refrain ‘Happy birthday!’ over and over, including over the phone, with calls from my parents, Liz, Tasha, both sets of grandparents, Jocelyn, and Dale. Both Jocelyn and Dale sent birthday cards, and Tasha had sent a gift. Turning twenty-one really didn’t change much, except that I could legally buy alcohol. Beyond that, my life would continue just as it had the day before. After dinner that evening, just before study group, my...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 78 I Met Someone

April 7, 1984, West Monroe, Ohio “Hi, Mikey!” Liz said when I walked in the door of the house just after 11:00am. “Hi!” I replied. “You saw Paul?” “I did. Everything seems to be going OK. He said you had a good talk at breakfast this morning.” “I’m DYING, Mike! I need him to take me in his arms and...” I held up my hand and interrupted, “I get the picture!” “How are things with Angie?” “We only talked about her a little bit. This was mostly about me.” “Are you having trouble?” I...

February 11, 1984, Rutherford, Ohio “Hi, Mike!” Emmy exclaimed when Liz and I arrived at the apartment she shared with her cousin. Liz and I greeted her and she let us in. “What’s the plan, Em?” Liz asked. “The other girls will be here soon. We can go out or just order pizza and hang out here. My cousin bought a video cassette recorder, and she has some movies, or we can rent one from the store down the street, or we can go to the theater.” “Do you care, Mike?” Liz asked. I shook my...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 64 Am I Allowed To Be Nervous

January 20, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “I actually think that might be a good idea,” Doctor Mercer said when we spoke on Friday afternoon. “What kind of time limits would you suggest?” “I think I’d like to wait until I see you on the 11th. I’ll see Angie a dozen times by then, and I’ll have a better idea what to tell you.” “How is she?” “I know it might not have seemed like it, but it lifted her spirits and made her very happy.” “That’s good to hear. I take it there were no ill effects from...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 57 Domino Theory

January 1, 1984, McKinley, Ohio Chloe melted into my arms and molded her body against mine and we began swaying to All Out of Love. I very much enjoyed the full-body contact, but something just felt different. I realized that I, too, had been enthralled by our duet, but it had worn off. I wondered if that was true for Chloe as well. If it had, then she wouldn’t ask; if it hadn’t, and she did, I’d promised to say ‘yes’. And truth be told, I knew I wanted to feel the body which was currently...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 72 Status Reports

March 20, 1984, Rutherford, Ohio I arrived at the halfway house in Rutherford just after 2:30pm on Tuesday afternoon wearing my cassock to keep up appearances. I was shown into Mr. Gilbert’s office. He offered coffee which I accepted and we sat down in a pair of chairs next to his desk. “Is everything OK?” I asked. “Yes, it is. I just wanted a word with you so I could thank you for the help you’ve given Paul Reynolds. I started doing this six years ago when I retired from GE, and we’ve...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 7 Substitution

June 9, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “Unbelievable,” Milena sighed as she snuggled close. We were sitting very close together in bed, leaning against pillows which were against the wall, the sheet pulled up only to our thighs, and wine glasses in our hands. “What?” I asked. “That something so gentle and so slow could make me feel better than a night of crazy sex.” “Isn’t that what happened with Joel?” I asked. “You told me that mostly it was just making love then talking for hours.” “But we’re...

September 24, 1983, McKinley, Ohio On Saturday morning, I was up at 4:30am, quickly showered, dressed, and left Sophia in my bed while I went to the lab to take down the readings and complete the checklists. I was back about 6:10am and Sophia was still sleeping. I changed into my running clothes and headed back outside. As I ran, I thought about my conversation with Sophia the previous evening. I didn’t have an easy answer for Angie, any more than I’d had one for Jocelyn, and I was...

September 3, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio “So now what?” she asked after about ten minutes of silence. A lot had run through my mind in those ten minutes. Jocelyn and I were two very different people, and I wondered if ‘Jos’ and ‘Mik’ actually still existed, or if they, too, had died as a direct result of that accident. And if they had, then what? Was there ANYTHING which could be salvaged from the past? Was Jocelyn even capable of having that kind of friendship? Her psyche was a complete mess,...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 42 Kentucky for Christmas

November 13, 1983, McKinley Ohio Kimiko had spent the night with me on Saturday, and Clarissa joined the two of us to go to church. The previous night, when Clarissa had spoken my thoughts, we’d simply hugged, she’d kissed my cheek, and left, letting Kimiko know I was waiting for her. The previous twenty-four hours had been almost surreal, but also clarifying. But it wasn’t over just yet — I had my date with Tasha, which I felt was going to be equally enlightening. Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 2 Son of a Vich

May 28, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio Later that morning, I stared at the phone, trying to decide exactly what I was going to say to Janey. My problem was, that even asking her to have lunch was fraught with problems. If we were seen together, AND it got back to Tasha, or worse, Deacon Vasily, that would be the end of any possible relationship with Tasha. And the more I thought about it, the more convinced I was that I didn’t want to do that. That said, I didn’t want to have the conversation with...

Hi, Tasha! Hi, Clarissa!” “Hi! Milena, where’s your intended?” I asked. “His friends have custody of him until the wedding starts at 8:00pm! October 27, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio “How did your clandestine tryst go?” Mom asked with a smile when she arrived home. “OK. Maggie is suffering under pretty harsh restrictions; in a way, they’re even worse than the ones you imposed on Liz, and Maggie didn’t really do anything other than go to church with me, read some Orthodox books, and say some Orthodox prayers. I mean, I could at least understand somewhat if she and I had fooled around, but we didn’t.” “And you think her dad knows that?...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 59 Analysis

January 5, 1984, Milford, Ohio “Should I lie on the couch?” I asked with a silly grin. “If you feel more comfortable. Some people do better face to face, some do better when they can’t see the therapist, others prefer side-by-side. You’ll learn that for what you’ll call your ‘bedside manner’, no two patients will respond the same way. You and one other young man who shall remain nameless to protect the guilty, just want straight shooting, no mincing words. Others need enough embroidery to...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 66 A ManToMan Talk

February 11, 1984, West Monroe, Ohio After I left Doctor Mercer’s office, I stopped at a deli on Route 50 in Milford, bought a cup of coffee and a bagel, and then headed towards West Monroe. I was still chuckling to myself over the revelation that Emmy had told all of my sister’s friends about my measurements, and apparently my prowess, and that had led to Mindy’s full-court press, as well as attention from the other girls, which, until they turned sixteen, had been a bit of flirting, but...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 76 Or Is It Triple Now

April 2, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “«Ты говоришь по-русски?»” I asked when I recovered from the double shock. “«Удивлены»?” “I don’t think surprised even scratches the surface!” I replied in English, not wanting to give up any nuances of my speech. “What’s your full name?” “Larissa Sergeyevna Federova. I was named for ‘Lara’ in Doctor Zhivago, but I go by Laura Sera Bragg. My parents divorced when I was little and both remarried. My mom changed her and my legal name to Bragg, which is my...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 5 Milena and Joel

June 3, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “You’re serious?” Milena asked, incredulous. “I am; you figured it out, and this is the talk we SHOULD have had.” She shook her head, “Now you have ME thinking about whether we should do this or not.” “Which was my entire point.” “Not to interrupt this moment of clarity,” Deb said quietly, “but is that invitation open?” I chuckled, “I’ll leave the answer to that to the pianist. Her opinion may have changed.” Milena sighed, “How the hell did a twenty-year...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 31 One Day At A Time

September 30, 1983, McKinley, Ohio Since the invention of the kiss, there have been five kisses rated the most passionate, the most pure. This one left them all behind. Well, perhaps that was a bit of an exaggeration, but compared to other first kisses, this one was certainly memorable — a soft touching of lips, a light hug with Kimiko’s small, silk-covered breasts brushing lightly against me, and her hand lightly on my back. Kimiko broke the kiss, looked me in the eyes, and whispered,...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 47 Racial Purity

December 1, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “You really object to Emmy and Clark being together because they’re from different races?!” I asked, completely taken aback. “I’m sorry,” Kimiko replied meekly. “I was trying to describe how Japanese felt about mixed-race children, especially those of black American soldiers and Japanese women. But it’s really any mixed-race children or relationships, because they are not pure Japanese.” “So if you and I were to marry, and have kids who were half-Japanese,...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 17 Found Out

August 7, 1983, McKinley, Ohio The phone in my room rang late Sunday afternoon while Milena and I were relaxing and listening to music. “Hi, Mikey!” “Hi, Liz! What’s up?” “Guess whose parents came home WAY earlier than expected? Three guesses, and the first two don’t count!” “«Говно». Maggie’s.” “Right the first time.” “And?” “Grounded for two centuries, I think.” “Wonderful,” I sighed. “It’s worse, Mikey.” “How could it be worse?” “Her dad found the books you gave her and the...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 61 Make Love To Me Please

January 7, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “Thanks for the lift, White Boy!” Clark said as we got out of my Mustang. “Somebody had to drag your lazy black ass the last fifty miles, and I have sympathy for the mentally challenged,” I deadpanned. “Hey, Cracker, are you saying I’m dumb because I’m black?” “Not at all! You being dumb has absolutely nothing to do with the color of your skin!” “Fuck you, Honky!” “I love you too!” I grinned. We both laughed, shook hands, and with Clarissa following...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 9 Rules Infraction

June 25, 1983, McKinley, Ohio I awoke to someone pounding on my door and calling my name. A quick glance at the clock showed it was 2:50am. I quickly got out of bed, pulled on shorts and a t-shirt and went to the door. I opened it to see a girl in a robe. “What’s up?” “Cecilia said to come get you. One of the girls is really sick!” “Did someone call for an ambulance?” I asked. “I don’t know.” “Call right now. Use my phone. Where are they?” “243!” I hurried down the hall into the...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 50 Another End To A Semester

December 16, 1983, McKinley, Ohio Exams had gone well, and Clarissa, Sandy, and I didn’t have a Friday exam because of our work in the lab only had an evaluation, which we’d each received earlier in the week. We’d all received excellent reviews, which meant an A for the course for each of us. Our stats exam had actually been a breeze, as had the biochemistry exam. The psychology exam was moderately tough, but I was sure I’d achieved at least a B, which meant I would have an A for the course....

July 16, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “Hi, Tasha!” “Hi, Mishka!” We exchanged a quick hug, then walked hand-in-hand to the diner for breakfast. “Are you able to come to dinner on my birthday?” she asked after we placed our order. “The 27th is the Saturday before school starts, so I think so. My RA orientation is on the 22nd and Freshman orientation is on the 25th. Did your dad say it was OK?” “Mom did! She felt I should be able to have you there for my eighteenth birthday!” “Then I’ll be...

Sing Me a Sad Song

My wife gave a country singer a blowjob on our bed and loved every swallow of it. At least that's what she told me at the pre divorce meeting. Here's how it all started and progressed, right up to the end: I had heard about how affairs and cheating started, sometimes in the workplace, and other times at a party or even a chance meeting in the produce section of the local super mart. With Kathleen, it was none of the above. She backed up right into his car when she pulled out of our...

March 30, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “Sorry about earlier,” she said. “My roommate was being a bitch.” “Something specific?” I asked. “She’s been on the rag ever since our second week here. Guy trouble. I guess she thought you were trying to use me.” “I can see why she would think that,” I replied. “You and I don’t know each other except basically by sight and name, I sang to you, and you came to my room.” “If I were totally clueless about life, I could see it. But I knew what was going on!...

Magic Medicine

MAGIC MEDICINE Christopher Halstead was at the end of his tether. He was only 50 years old but felt deep down in his soul that his useful life had come to an end. To understand why it is necessary to go back some twenty-five years. In 1992 Christopher married his childhood sweetheart Amy. He and Amy had grown up in adjacent houses; attended the same schools; and had had an unspoken 'understanding' from their teens. They only occasion they spent time apart was whilst they were at...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 4 A Good Reason

June 1, 1983, McKinley, Ohio Wednesday at the Quick Mart was very much like Tuesday, though there were no deliveries, so I had time to work through a number of items on Mr. Sokolov’s list. That kept me busy, and away from Nancy except for when it was time for her breaks. She apologized again and I replied as I had before, just telling her to take her break. Maybe I was being a jerk, but I was honestly quite upset with her, and really didn’t think there was much to talk about. When my shift...

November 26, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio “So what did you say?” Clarissa asked after I relayed what Hannah had said. “I simply said I appreciated the offer, that I’d keep that in mind, then smiled and left the house.” “After Maggie gave you permission?” “I don’t need ‘permission’ from Maggie to do anything,” I protested. “And be serious, Lissa, do you think it’s a good idea?” Clarissa shrugged, “Is it all that different from Kristin? Or from Mindy and Emmy?” “That kind of thinking is a...

October 16, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “I started dating someone,” I said to Tasha as we relaxed in the whirlpool at Doctor Blahnik’s house. “You’re not cheating on her, are you Mikhail Petrovich?” “No. It’s not THAT serious, and it won’t be anytime soon, if it ever is. But I thought you should know because we promised complete truth and complete honesty. I don’t want any misunderstandings.” “May I ask about her?” “Her name is Kimiko Mei Takahasi. Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 15 Zenos Paradox

July 23, 1983, McKinley, Ohio Just as I had when Nancy told me that her mom had put her on the Pill, I missed a shift due to being completely surprised by Maggie’s question. I recovered enough to find the correct gear, and willed my heart to stop beating rapidly. The silence was deafening, but I needed to think about how I could answer her question. I wasn’t sure I knew the answer, but saying that seemed lame in the extreme. Almost immediately, I realized that I really shouldn’t have been...

March 15, 1984, Gettysburg and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania “You’re OK?” Clarissa asked when she and I got out of bed on Thursday morning. “Yes. Just kissing was fine, Lissa. Let’s get our showers and meet Jocelyn. We need to get on the road by 6:30am so we can be in Philadelphia by 10:00am.” We both quickly showered and dressed, then we met Jocelyn in the hotel lobby. Did that kiss bother you?” I smiled, “Not the way you mean. It was just, well, to be blunt, fighting a reaction. And losing.” Clarissa laughed softly, “I know. I felt it when I spooned. I’m sorry.” “Don’t be. I liked the kiss. The other reaction is kind of involuntary. As I keep saying, testosterone knows NOTHING about...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 12 Conflagration

July 5, 1983, McKinley, Ohio As I showered after karate, I wondered exactly what Angie had meant when she said that she’d changed, and what that meant for the future. Angie had told me that her counselor had advised against starting a relationship, so perhaps this was just Angie’s way of telling me that what Clarissa had suggested might be true — that Angie was playing the ‘long game’ and this was simply the next step. That made more sense than anything, but it also meant I needed to be...

April 8, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “Natalya Vasilyevna Antonova, please meet Larissa Sergeyevna Federova,” I said. I laughed as the two girls instantly switched to Russian and I had to focus to catch everything that was said. Clarissa smirked and rolled her eyes, and I just shrugged. The gist of the conversation was hometowns, parents, churches, majors, and to Tasha’s obvious shock, Lara’s age. “Perhaps we should switch to English so Sveta isn’t left out,” Tasha said in English. “Mike looked...

Mike told me you were going to hang out with us tonight.” “Do you drink wine?” Becky laughed, “My pastor would have a cow, but he’s not here!” Milena laughed, “And shacking up with Mike, THAT would be OK?” “Well, no!” Becky laughed, blushing slightly. Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 21 Back to Class

August 28, 1983, McKinley, Ohio When I got up on Sunday morning, I showered and dressed, and then Kristin and I left my room and I found a note from Angie on the corkboard next to my door. It said she was getting a ride to church from the same woman who had picked her up the previous night and I shouldn’t wait for her. I shrugged, locked the door, and gave Kristin a quick kiss. She headed down the hall towards her room and I walked over to the elevators and pushed the ‘Down’ button. An...

August 27, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio “Tasha,” I said gently, “you made me promise to keep you pure until we were married, or at least betrothed, no matter what you said! In other words, you made me promise not to do it even if you changed your mind! And I made that promise!” “I can’t change my mind?” “You were very clear that I was responsible for you NOT doing that.” “But isn’t that up to me?” I nodded, “As an adult, in charge of her own decisions, it is. But you extracted that promise...

October 14, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “I’m worried about Angie,” I said as Clarissa, Melody, and I made our way back to the dorm from the Chancellor’s office. “I know you told the detective that you have no idea where she might be, but do you have ANY thoughts?” Melody asked. In fact, I was sure that win or lose, I’d win, from a certain perspective. “No, that’s not it...” I started. “Then let’s play!” “Are you sure?” She nodded, “I can’t think of a more fun way to celebrate my birthday!” I could, and I was sure that what I was thinking was exactly what she was thinking, and she was just...

May 6, 1984, Rutherford, Ohio “I’m curious,” Clarissa asked quietly, “but what about a patronymic in this case?” “Sasha hasn’t said,” Tasha replied. “Technically, it would be some form of Timothy, because Timmy Aston is the baby’s father, but I don’t think she’ll do that. She really could pick anything.” “What happened with the baby’s father?” Clarissa asked. “My dad, Timmy’s dad, and two attorneys worked out the deal. June 5, 1983, McKinley, Ohio My alarm rang on Sunday morning and when I reached over to shut it off, Milena groaned softly, stretched, and turned to face me, her glorious breasts rubbing against my chest. “Hi,” she said sheepishly. “What’s wrong?” “Nothing! September 3, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio Tasha was very quiet on the drive home from Jackson Lake, and I wasn’t sure what to say to her, so I stayed quiet as well. When we arrived at my house, we exchanged a perfunctory kiss. “Are you OK?” I asked. “Yes,” she replied. “I’ll see you tomorrow at church.” I got out of the Volvo and went into the house.
