We had decided on a time limit of 3 hours. This likely would not let the group finish the adventure, but would give everybody a good idea how it would all play out. Soon all had been read the backstory, and off we went. This time however Deana had a camera and was occasionally taking photos of us all playing.
The game went pretty well, and just after our break at the halfway point, one of the guys made an observation. “Dude, is it me, or is everything we are fighting undead, or a created monster?” I simply smiled and shortly we continued with the game, but at least one person got it. Since this was a tomb, I saw no reason to put in traditional “monsters”. So in designing it, I saw no place for orcs and the like to “live” inside. Indeed everything they were fighting was either undead, or an animated monster.
But Mandy and Peggy were having a blast. Nobody was sure of what to make of the male-female elf couple being played by 2 girls. And sometimes they would flirt with each other in character, which seemed to cause everybody to chuckle.
The one rough spot was towards the end, when Peggy tried on a leather belt that they had found after defeating a group of vampires. Now this was of course already prepared, and obviously she thought she knew what it was because it was leather and had an etching of 2 bulls on it. “A girdle of Strength” she assumed.
Well, yes and no. Her Elvin Ranger now had a strength of 19 so long as she wore the girdle. Her female Ranger. I handed her the card, which described the belt. A belt of Hill Giant Strength, that statistic raised to 19 as long as it was worn. The wearer can “throw” a mystic hammer 4 times a day for 2d8 damage. Cursed by changing the sex of the wearer to the reverse of what it was before worn. Only removable by an artifact, gift from a god, or limited wish.
Well, Peggy was not happy with that, and pouted, saying I had done it on purpose. I gently reminded her that this had all been made up weeks ago, how could I have ever known she would put it on today?
We got about ¾ of the way through the adventure, and everybody started writing their critique sheets. Finally it was just the 10 of us, and Mr. Cummings seemed very happy with how it went. “Pete, I am going to take this and read through all of it, but it looks like you have another winner here. Unless the rest of it is completely horrible and unsaveable expect your next acceptance check in a week or so.
Deana asked me some questions as to how I had made this up, and then my concept of what I was calling “Dungeon Ecology”.
“You see, I keep running into people who make up dungeons, and have no real concept as to the ecology behind it. A bunch of orcs, living next to a chamber with a dragon. Why have the orcs not left to get away from it? Why has the dragon not eaten them? It makes no sense. So I am trying to make sure my dungeons all make sense, from an ecological standpoint. This time, it is a tomb, so putting in only undead and animated monsters simply makes sense for the setting. Next time however, I am going to try and flesh the idea out even more.”
Peggy then came over, slapped me lightly, then kissed my cheek. “Pete, you are right, you could not have planned that. And I'm not sure if I should be glad, or mad because this happened. Yes, it was a way to play our relationship in front of others, and not be obvious. But how do we go from here? Are we now a lesbian couple? Do we continue on like this? What happens now?”

They were free to completely ignore this and to play as they had before, but without the belt obviously. They looked at each other, and Peggy said she would think about it. After lunch we went up to the conference room and the previous panel before was just wrapping up. Gloria was almost done with the setup, and soon I was part of a group discussing game design. For my part, I told them that for me, most of them were largely MacGuffins.
“Now I am sure this may mean nothing to most of you, but the term comes from Alfred Hitchcock. In short, a MacGuffin is actually meaningless to the story, it only exists to get the story moving. Ultimately, most of the time the MacGuffin really does not matter, it only drives the story.” I saw Linda sitting next to Gloria, and she winked at me. I smiled back at her.
“When I made my first adventure, there was no real concept yet in the complete story. I had the idea of simply having a group go out into the wilderness, and meet 7 dwarves. That was the goal, the rest simply flowed in around that. The ‘gold strike’, the shortage of mining supplies, all of that was simply an excuse to have the party go out and meet these dwarves. Yes, it was light-hearted. Yes, it was a bit corny. But that was the entire concept, everything else just served to build up to that. The dwarves were actually completely irrelevant. They refuse to work with the players, and will refuse to let them stay with them for more than a single night no matter what. The dwarves do not matter! It was only an excuse to get the party started on the adventure.” I took a sip of water, and saw that most of the audience were watching me closely.
“And yes, the character of Kaos was also just fluff filler originally. A way for my best friend to inject her ‘Valley Girl’ personality into the game. But as I started my second part, I decided to expand upon that, and make her an unwilling accomplice for the bad guys. Earlier today we tested the first part of my next published adventure I hope. And it also is a MacGuffin. The tomb of the greatest Emperor in the Kingdom from an ‘Age of Legends’ has been desecrated, and the group has been hired to go in and defeat all the enemies, find and defeat the one behind it, and then use a spell to re-consecrate it. The MacGuffin is right there, but you will likely not know it until after it is fully played.” And I looked back at where my dad and Deana were sitting, and saw her writing furiously into her notepad.
“Because the actual MacGuffin really does not matter. It can be a statue of a black bird, it can be an astromech droid. It may be a stash of Byzanium in the hold of the Titanic, or it may be the Holy Grail. The actual reason to start the adventure is not as important as the adventure itself.”
I got a lot of applause for that, and I saw a lot of people nodding in the audience. I think at least some of them actually got what I was saying. After we had wrapped up, Gloria came up and said she thought it was great. “You know, in film class we talked a lot about Hitchcock and MacGuffins. But I never really realized it could also be part of games. You should think of taking a few film classes, they might show you some other things like that you had not realized before.”
We all exchanged hugs, and dad gave me $50, saying he would be home on Tuesday evening. I grinned and gave them both hugs as hand in hand he left with Deana. Soon we were all packed into the Blue Whale and heading home. Everybody was worn out after 3 days so I took everybody to their respective homes. First I dropped off Peggy, then Keith. You are being graded in these moves, so you should not add in any others. If you like we can work on a more refined version, but after the exhibition, not before. OK?”

After watching her go through it for the 4th time Linda and I went into the arcade area and did a little kissing between playing a few of the games. “Yep, although mostly I am into the more hardcore stuff than RPGs. 25mm lead armies, mostly the Middle-Roman era. My main competition army is about 2,000 pieces now.”
“Dang dude,” Keith chimed in. “How in the hell can you afford that?”
“Simple, I make my own. I basically copy them, using rubber molds I take off of other figures, then I melt down things like tire weights I find in the road. A lot of the detail is lost, but once painted and in groups of 100 or more you don’t see it.”
It seemed Mike was also on the school paper, and apparently he was serious about doing an article on me though. “Dude, you are actually a published game designer, with what, 2 games under your belt now?”
“5 actually. 1 was a small dungeon published in a game magazine a few months ago. And a board game, and now 3 that are either published or in the process of being published.”
“Perfect. I gotta run this by my editor, but I think I can get 2 pages on you. It would be nice to see some of the attention taken away from the jocks and the drama pukes, and get some good honest geekdom in the paper for a change.”
He had to take off and he said he will look me up in a day or so. Peggy just laughed as he strolled away, and we asked her what was so funny.
“Mike there is like, an honorary cousin of sorts. Our moms are best friends, and we go to the same church. He is the nerdiest nerd I know. Not into any sports, not into music really, all he cares about is games and comics. He even has a huge collection of comics from Japan and Korea that he is always trying to talk to me about.”
“Well, he seems like a nice guy.”
“Oh, he is. Whenever our church has a dance he and I always pair up if we are both there. He is the only guy it seems that dances with me that does not get all grabby-feelie when we get into a slow dance.”

I will be here most weekends, so feel free to let me test future games for you if you wish. So far they have all been killer, and I like being able to say I get to see them before anybody else.”

“Well, I had already gotten permission from my dad to use the den as our game room. We started to empty it out last week and most of the bookshelves are already in the garage. We can not host as many people as JD could, but I figure we can do 6 or 7 players without a problem.”

“Holly, nothing says it has to be Thursday night. That was mostly because of JD’s schedule. We can decide to hold it any day of the week. Linda, what would be a good night for Mandy?”

Shortly afterwards we were chatting and cooling off from our evening of pleasure. And because we all had to return to school the next day I had soon driven everybody home and told Linda I would pick her up the next morning. Her first as a Sophomore.
That morning I gave the girls a ride to their schools. Mandy to hers first, then Linda and I to ours. We had no classes in common, with my being a Senior. But we still met up in the Quad for breaks. The only frustrating part was the strict rule against Public Displays of Affection (PDA) that we now had to carefully follow while on the school grounds. No kissing, no hugging, no contact basically other than holding hands. So we would eat in the Quad and hold hands as we chatted with our friends.
But Peggy was one of them, and a Junior now. So lunch was normally Holly and Keith, Peggy, Linda, myself, and whoever else came and went that day. However, after about a week a guy came up and said “I thought that was you! You're the guy that makes games, right?”
I nodded, and he introduced himself as Mike, and soon we were all in a conversation about gaming. “Dude, I caught you at the last 2 cons, but had no idea you went to our school. I thought you said you lived in Idaho?”
“Nope, I said I am FROM Idaho. That is true, but I live here in Van Nuys.”
“OK, I wish I had known that before. There is a great story in this.”
Peggy placed her hand on his shoulder and laughed. “All you had to do was ask me, dork. This is the guy that is dating Mandy’s sister, and we talked at the convention about why I was there.”
“Yea Pegs, but, like, I didn’t know you were really talking about somebody known. I thought it was like just some dude who just did his own thing.”
“So you are a gamer too?” I asked.
“Yep, although mostly I am into the more hardcore stuff than RPGs. 25mm lead armies, mostly the Middle-Roman era. My main competition army is about 2,000 pieces now.”
“Dang dude,” Keith chimed in. “How in the hell can you afford that?”
“Simple, I make my own. I basically copy them, using rubber molds I take off of other figures, then I melt down things like tire weights I find in the road. A lot of the detail is lost, but once painted and in groups of 100 or more you don’t see it.”
It seemed Mike was also on the school paper, and apparently he was serious about doing an article on me though. “Dude, you are actually a published game designer, with what, 2 games under your belt now?”
“5 actually. 1 was a small dungeon published in a game magazine a few months ago. And a board game, and now 3 that are either published or in the process of being published.”
“Perfect. I gotta run this by my editor, but I think I can get 2 pages on you. It would be nice to see some of the attention taken away from the jocks and the drama pukes, and get some good honest geekdom in the paper for a change.”
He had to take off and he said he will look me up in a day or so. Peggy just laughed as he strolled away, and we asked her what was so funny.
“Mike there is like, an honorary cousin of sorts. Our moms are best friends, and we go to the same church. He is the nerdiest nerd I know. Not into any sports, not into music really, all he cares about is games and comics. He even has a huge collection of comics from Japan and Korea that he is always trying to talk to me about.”
“Well, he seems like a nice guy.”
“Oh, he is. Whenever our church has a dance he and I always pair up if we are both there. He is the only guy it seems that dances with me that does not get all grabby-feelie when we get into a slow dance.”
Linda giggled at that, and quipped “Hey Pegs, I thought you liked when guys got grabby-feelie!”
Ever seen a cute little Korean girl blush? “Not in THAT way!” she said. “If I wanna feel a guy against me, I want it at my instigation, not because he wants to try and hump me on a dance floor at church!”
“OK, got ya. But ahhh, around a hotel pool is different?” I said. The squawk and sputtering from Peggy was worth the hard slap on the chest she gave me for saying that. And with that the bell rang, and after some quick pecks on the lips we all headed off to class.
That Thursday we met up at JDs for our last game. He was attending UCLA, and almost all of the group had dispersed over the summer. Tiny was at Georgia tech, and about all that was left was Holly, Keith, Linda, and myself. However he decided to give a big sendoff to his campaign. The final battle was epic, and when it was over we were granted with minor patents of nobility and land grants. Now we had all officially retired, along with the 3 year campaign he had run.
As we were packing up, JD pulled me aside. “Pete, I am already in a game group at UCLA, and I ran them through Chaos already and they loved it. I will be here most weekends, so feel free to let me test future games for you if you wish. So far they have all been killer, and I like being able to say I get to see them before anybody else.”
We shook hands and I promised I would continue to do just that. After we climbed into Blue Whale, we discussed what we should do next. Thankfully, I already had that worked out.
“Well, I had already gotten permission from my dad to use the den as our game room. We started to empty it out last week and most of the bookshelves are already in the garage. We can not host as many people as JD could, but I figure we can do 6 or 7 players without a problem.”
“But Pete, what do we do about more players?” Holly asked.
“Holly, nothing says it has to be Thursday night. That was mostly because of JD’s schedule. We can decide to hold it any day of the week. Linda, what would be a good night for Mandy?”
She thought for a moment. “Tuesday or Wednesday probably. Wednesday for Peggy, it is the only night off she has other than weekends.”
“OK, there we go. We move game nights to Wednesday, that increases the group from 4 to 6. We can work with that, or add 1 or 2 more before we have to figure out something else.”
“Dude, that’s great! So when can we check it out and give it a test?”
“Sorry Keith, next week. I got some things still coming, and I do not want anybody to see it until it is ready. But I think you all will like it.”
By this time we were parked at the Runway, and had about an hour left. Little more was said as Linda crawled into my lap, and Holly and Keith got comfortable in the back. A nice hour making out with your girlfriend is always a great way to spend the evening.
