"This is Susan Wallaby for WCTR-TV reporting live in front of the Atlanta
City Hall where over a thousand homeless families have gathered to protest
reductions in the state's food stamp program. There is the Mayor. Let's see
if we can get an interview with him." he pretty young woman ran down the
steps after him.
Jerry Wanamaker watched from the street. He was here to help the protest.
He was an intelligent man but a horrible childhood accident had left him
disfigured around his hands and face. He was quite capable of work but
when prospective employers saw his face, he was usually shown the door as
soon as they could manage after pretending to seriously consider him for a
few minutes. He watched the news reporter with envy. He loved the idea
of being the one to investigate and report the unknown to a waiting public but
with his disfigurement, a career in reporting could only be a dream. He had
hoped to become a radio reporter since appearance wouldn't matter in that
field, but the other employees were uncomfortable with him and the station
soon found an excuse to let him go.
He was in-between jobs right now himself, and though he wasn't homeless,
his tiny one room apartment wasn't anything worth speaking of. He had
plenty of time on his hands to support others who had even less than he did,
so he put on his gloves and combed down his long hair to disguise his scars
as much as possible. Then he was out and about, trying to figure out what
he could do to help.
He listened to the Mayor talking to Susan about how the homeless should get
jobs and stop being a burden on the city and the state. He wished the
reporter would ask him tough questions and put him on the spot but nothing
happened.
Then Something Happened...

The world went away and Jerry passed out. When he awoke, he could hear
anguish and confusion like he had never heard it before. He lay on the
ground trying to get his bearings. His body felt very strange. It was almost
as if he were totally unfamiliar with the way it was put together. It reminded
him of the first year after the accident in his youth when he had to learn to use
his hands all over again because of the scar tissue. This time, however, it
didn't really hurt much. His legs were scraping against the sidewalk as if he
had no pants on, and his chest felt...squashed. His hair kept falling in his
face, but that wasn't unusual. It was strange, however, to realize it was long
enough to fall down to his waist. He opened his eyes and saw his hair was
blonde and much nicer than his hair should be. Several cars had crashed and
exploded after the gas tanks caught fire. Could another fire be responsible
for what had happened to him? No. Someone was talking in his ear about a
worldwide disaster. The voice said that over ninety percent of the population
had swapped bodies with other people. The voice said the bodyswapping
was apparently random and not restricted by age, race, or sex. Jerry
couldn't listen to such nonsense anymore. He had to get up and get a doctor
to fix whatever was wrong with him.
He pulled himself to his feet and was totally shocked to realize he was
standing on something which elevated his heels. He looked down to see
what he was standing on and the shocks continued. He stared down at the
body of a woman. An attractive woman from what he could tell at this
strange perspective. The body he was in had nice curves without being too
big in any places. It was a body he would have liked to take out on a date, if
any woman would actually agree to go out with him without being damaged
physically herself first. This was the first time he had been this close to an
attractive female. It hadn't quite registered in his brain yet that he might be
the attractive woman now. He was still adjusting to occupying a strange new
form, as was almost everyone else around him.
Someone was screaming a little down the road. The voice was a bit familiar.
Jerry turned towards it and saw his own body holding his hands in front of
his face and screaming. Suddenly it started running away from city hall,
until it disappeared into the confused crowd. That was the last time Jerry
ever saw his original body. He hoped whoever got stuck in it was able to find
some peace. A man carrying a large camera walked slowly up to him.
He extended his hand and Jerry reflexively shook it. The hand was a lot
bigger and stronger than it looked. Then Jerry remembered his own hand
was quite a bit smaller and weaker than his own, even taking into account the
scars which he had grown accustomed to. He wanted to stare at his
beautiful, soft, sensitive hand forever but the man was talking to him.
"Are you all right, Pete? My body is in good health, but you might be in
shock from the change. Maybe you should sit down." He put his arm
around Jerry's waist and led him to a nearby bench. "Thank goodness you
kept this body in good shape, or I might be more upset than I really am. It is
really strange to be a man but I have to admit that some of the things I am
feeling are pretty incredible, Pete." Seeing the confusion on Jerry's face, he
blanched a bit and his face paled. "You are Peter Gomez, my cameraman,
aren't you?"
Jerry shook his head, blonde hair swirling around his face, earrings jangling
against his cheeks.
"Then who are you...were you, and where is Pete...or should I ask who is
he, now?"
"Jerry Wanamaker." Jerry introduced himself.
"Susan Wallaby. That's my body you have there. God, this is so strange!
The body I'm in belongs to my cameraman, Pete. I hope he's OK. So you
are Jerry, hmm? Is that Gerri like the former Spice girl? Or Jeri like the Borg
girl from Star trek Voyager?"
"Jerry like the Jerry Seinfeld show Jerry, I'm afraid..."
"Wow! You were a guy and I was a woman, and now I'm a guy and you are
me."
"Have you been listening to the station on the earphone? It looks like ninety
percent of the country was changed like we all did here. They are asking for
reports, though it is hard to tell who is asking. I think the new receptionist is
now the news editor, or is that the other way around." Susan giggled.
Jerry thought it was strange seeing a grown man giggle like a woman, but
today was a strange day to be sure, and if it took giggling to get you through
it, then so be it..
Susan continued. "They are asking for a field report from me but I'm Pete
now and I can't find him. I was hoping he would be me...I mean you! I
can operate the camera as long as there are no tough shots to get, but I need
someone to talk about what they see here. Do you think you could tell the
story about what is going on here, or are you too freaked out, Jerry?"
Jerry paused a moment. He was being offered a chance to report the news on
television. It was a dream come true, but was it his dream now that he
wasn't himself any longer?
"Absolutely!" He brushed the dust from the feminine clothing he now wore,
and tried not to think about the unfamiliar body he was touching. There
would be time for that later. He shivered a little at the thought of...later.
Maybe Susan could give him some guidance and help in that task tonight.
He was beginning to like her smile. Thoughts of kissing her came unbidden
into his head. She would have to shave off the goatee, though. He wasn't
ready to kiss someone with a beard. Some feminine urge told him that might
change by tonight as well. He tried to put such thoughts out of his mind.
They had a job to do. The people needed to know. And he was just the
man to do it. He might even be the woman to do it, he thought to himself,
giggling a little to himself now as Susan set up the camera to broadcast live.
They stood in front of a crowd of people who were acting very strange.
Jerry started to talk to the camera.
"We are in front of the City Hall, a place where a lot of confused people have
gathered to express their freedom of speech and to protest errors in
government. Now, they are all concerned with more personal problems.
Like almost all the world, they have been switched into the wrong bodies.
Some pick at their torn and ratty clothing with disgust. Others look through
wallets and purses and are thrilled to find money they needed to eat a good
meal. The first good meal some of these people have tasted in months Too
many are crying or screaming out to God to get them back into their rightful
bodies. These prayers, sadly seem to go unanswered."
"I'm..." Jerry paused a moment and made a decision. I'm...Susan
Wallaby... and we are going to talk to these people today.
Susan smiled. He was good. Very good! He was able to communicate with
the crowd and calm them down while getting some great interviews. The
station reran the three hour film four time in the next week, and it was picked
up by CNN.
Six months later, their report won the Pulitzer Prize. They would have been
more thrilled, but were in the middle of their wedding ceremonies when the
announcement was made, and the Honeymoon kept them busy for another
two weeks.
A year and a half later, they named their first child Peter after the man Susan
had become to honor his memory.
