Observational notes on the effects of the Szalinsky Neuron Nudger (pat.
pending), an experimental device from the Szalinsky Inventions research
files.
My new Szalinsky Neuron Nudger device was too successful!
My new associate at work, Bianca, stole my invention and stranded
myself and my wife in the bodies of animals! After a confusing set of
circumstances, Bianca stranded me in my dog Quark's body, and my
wife had somehow became a cat. (I never thought I'd do a Gilligan's
island gag in the middle of an experiment...) My children found us and
brought us to my office where we found Bianca trying to sell the
invention as her own.
As she struggled to escape, she caused an overload which swapped
the minds of my family and the two animals and Mr. Jennings into
bodies that weren't theirs. My daughter swapped into Mr. Jennings body
while he wound up in the body of my wife! My son Nick awoke in my
daughter's body. My poor wife transferred into the body of Quark the
dog, while I luckily got my own body back from Quark. Bianca seemed
stunned but unaffected.
To make a long story short I was able to undo the damage and we all
wound up in our own bodies. I never saw Bianca again so I guess Mr.
Jennings fired her.
When we got home, without my knowing about it, the kids took it
upon themselves to exchange minds with each other. It didn't take my
wife and I more than a couple of weeks to figure it out. There were a
number of signs. My son has a brilliant mind and suddenly my daughter
was the one who was very interested in my work. She had also stopped
wearing any makeup, although her mother and I thought that was a
pleasant change from telling her she was using too much every other day
or so. She also had taken to wearing pants all the time instead of rarely,
and had stopped curling her hair, putting it in a ponytail each day
instead. Meanwhile, my son suddenly had trouble sinking basketballs,
usually overshooting the basket like he didn't know his own height or
strength. And although it was summer, I could swear he was using
chapstick each day.
The clincher though, was when my daughter, in a robe, ran from the
bathroom into my son's bedroom yelling "I'm bleeding and it doesn't
stop!" to my boy. I knew something was up. You can't put something
by a Szalinsky for long, you know. She walked out a few minutes later
much calmer until she saw her mother and me waiting for an
explanation.
"I can explain, mom, dad..." 'she' said.
"No need, son" I said.
"How did you know?" s-he said.
So I told her/him of our observations and confusions, and how we
were able to put 1 and 2 and a period together. "All we want to know is
why? Why did you swap minds again?"
My son/ex-daughter came out of the bedroom and said... "I was tired
of 'almost' being an adult and wanted to be a kid again for a while, and
he was tired of being a kid who was smarter than most of his teachers,
and wanted to be older."
My ex-son chimed in. "We also were curious about what it was like
to be the other gender. We didn't have enough time to truly experience it
the last time. Showers at the gym seem a lot more fun now and I really
liked spending the night at her girlfriends sleepover. And when her
friends aren't teasing me like they did to me as a boy, they can be really
nice! I really learned a lot about girls from them."
"I'll bet you did!" my wife observed, a little smile on her face.
My ex-daughter added, "I like feeling stronger even though I'm
younger now. And mom, I don't have to be afraid to be outside after
dark anymore. You should try it. It's very liberating." My new son
whispered the rest in my wife's ear but I overheard. "And you can't
imagine the variety of guys in gym class until you've been there. Most of
them are more mature than I am right now you know. A lot more
mature...." My wife's smile got a little bigger.
"How long did you think you could get away with this?" I asked.
"Well, she could pass all my classes since she's four grades ahead of
me," my new daughter said to us. "And I could be going to college right
now if you didn't want me to live a 'normal life', so I didn't have any
trouble with her school work, either. But I'm ready to swap back now. I
didn't know this period stuff was so yucky and bloody and emotional."
"No way!" My neo-son said, raising his voice for emphasis. "You
wanted to see what it was like to be a girl and you are going to finish the
job. And I want at least one month's vacation from 'that time of the
month'. We can switch back next week... if that's O.K. with you, mom."
"Seems fair to me, and a good punishment for him...her... if your
father agrees."
She looked at me for agreement and I nodded.
"And as you, young lady--man, I mean, I think some boy-type
chores are in order for your punishment. You can take the garbage out
for the rest of the week, wash the cars, mow the lawn, clean out the
garage and the basement, and since it's your brother's 'time of the month',
you can do all 'her' chores as well. And you had better start now by
teaching your brother hygiene fundamentals so he can take care of your
body for the next week. I'm beginning to think a trip to the gynecologist
may be in order for Nick... or I guess I should call you Amy for now."
That smile returned to her face. "Don't just stand there, go show him
what to do."
They went to the bathroom together and closed the door.
That smile got bigger on her face.
"I think it's time we take another look at that machine, Honey!"

"Which explains why the lab's photographic record now shows my
wife working to fix the Szalinski Neuron Nudger in a dress and two inch
heels. Our nightly "experiments" have been a lot of fun, though! I still
suspect she sabotaged the device the day before we were supposed to
switch ourselves back. I think she like the idea of a vacation from her
own 'time of the month'. Like mother, like daughter. Our nightly
"experiments" have been a lot of fun, though!
That reminds me, I have to ask my son where he left the Midol.
