Andi - Chapter 1
It was my fifteenth birthday the day it all started. I'd
gotten home and sat down in front of the TV to watch the
usual kid's programs. Most of it was too young for me, but
some programs, meant for younger kids, also had jokes in it
intended for adults. I didn't really notice the time, till
there was a knock at the door, by which time I noticed that
the clock said 6pm.
Standing at the door we're two police officers. They asked
me my name, and the names of my parents. They then asked if
they could come in. My parents had always told me not to
open the door to strangers, but this was the police, so I
don't really think they meant them. They sat me down, and
then one of the officers sat next to me, and told me they
had some bad news. My parents had been involved in a car
crash on the way home, and they had both been killed.
I sat there feeling numb. They were the only family that I
knew of. They had no brothers or sisters, and their parents
had died before I was born. The police took me to their car
after checking everything was secure at the house, drove me
to the children's home. I was left there, still not fully
realising what had happened, or what I was going to do.
Eventually I laid down and fell to sleep.
The children's home had the usual mix of kids. Some who
we're only there for a short time because they're parents
we're in hospital. Some whose parents had abandoned them or
mistreated them. I was one of the few who had been
orphaned. The staff we're nice and friendly, but I didn't
really notice. The home also had a resident bully, I
suppose every place has one, you just hope they won't pick
you for their fun, unfortunately, he did. From the day
after I arrived, Kevin had picked on me in some way. I was
still too dazed to do anything about it, and this only
encouraged him more.
The funeral came and went, with a lot of people from my
parent's firms attending. Everyone looked at me with a look
of sympathy on their faces, not really knowing what to say.
I was driven back to the children's home, and got changed
out of my formal suit, into some more casual, comfortable
jeans and T-shirt. I'm not exactly sure what or why I was
thinking what I was thinking, but whatever it was, I'd
decided not to stay at the home, I'd decided, no more being
bullied. I packed a backpack with enough things and creeped
out of the building when it was just getting dark.
An hour of walking later, I was at the edge of town in the
country. I took one look back, then carried on. I wasn't
going to go back to the place that held so many bad
memories for me.
It wasn't long before it got cold, and then the heavens
opened. I hadn't planned on rain, and the little jacket
that I had on was no protection against the elements. Soon
I was soaking wet and sneezing, but I kept on walking. If
someone from the home realised I was gone, they would be on
the lookout for me, and that was something I didn't want.
After half an hour of walking with my hitching thumb
getting increasingly sore, a car stopped. The driver wound
the window down and leaned towards me.
"You going far young sir?" came the woman's voice from
inside.
"To be honest miss, I don't know where I'm going right
now." I replied, which was the honest truth.
"Well, wherever it is, you want to get out of this rain,
you'll catch you're death out here."
"Thank you miss."
I got into the strangers car, something I'd never done
before, and something everyone from my parents to my
teachers to the hand puppets on TV tell you not to do, but
it was raining heavily, and she was right, I'd catch my
death of cold if I stayed out here much longer.
"Here," said the stranger, "put this blanket around you to
keep you warm."
I did as she said, and almost immediately started to feel
better. We talked for a while, and I told her everything
that had happened since my birthday, about how my parents
had been in a car accident, the children's home and the
funeral. She was sympathetic, but not overly, which was a
refreshing change of late.
"I'm sorry, I completely forgot my manners, there's a
thermos just by your feet with some tea in it if you'd like
some."
"Thanks, that'd be wonderful."
I poured some of the tea into the cup, and had a drink of
it. The hot tea warmed me up almost straight away.
"By the way, what am I to call you?"
"Andy, my names Andy." and then I fell to sleep.
It didn't seem like I'd been asleep long as the car drove
through the automatic gates, up the long gravel path. The
house at the end of the drive was magnificent, like some
ancient castle a lord might expect to own.
"Come on then Andy, let's get you inside, and get those wet
things of you shall we." It was more of a statement than a
question, but said really nicely. "I've just realised I've
forgotten my manners again silly me, my name is Barbara,
but you can call me Babs for short."
"Okay Babs, thank you very much." I didn't pay all that
much more attention to the house, well, it was more of a
castle. I was still pretty groggy from sleeping in the car.
We walked round to the side of the house and opened the
door. Babs explained that she didn't really use the main
door, except for special occasions. The side door led into
the kitchen, which like the rest of the house was big, but
unlike the rest of the house was very modern. Up three
flights of stairs from the kitchen we went. This must have
been designed as the servant's stairway, I imagined a grand
palatial stairway from the front door to the upper levels.
Babs showed me to a room that had a bed and en-suite
bathroom. The room itself, in fact everything on this level
was very pink, and looked like it was intended for a very
small girly type of girl. I didn't mind, I was cold and
wet, and feeling just a little hungry too.
"Okay Andy, take your clothes off and give them to me, and
I'll run you a nice bath and get you some towels."
I stood there feeling more than a little awkward, thinking
about showing my naked body to this nice woman, and I think
she realised.
"Oh, what am I thinking, I'll go run you a bath, and you
can get undressed while I'm out of the room, just pop your
clothes in the clothes bin there, wrap a towel round
yourself, and I'll get them washed and dried for you, ready
for when you leave."
A sigh of relief washed over me, and as Babs filled my
bath, I got undressed, putting my now soaked clothes into
the clothes bin. I picked up a towel from the rack, as with
everything else, it was pink. I wrapped the pink towel
around me, and sat on the bed waiting for Babs to finish
running my bath. I didn't have to wait long, before Babs
came out of the bathroom followed by a sweet smell.
"Mmmm, that's smells nice Babs."
"Oh, oh yes it does, I'm sorry Andy, I'm so used to adding
nice bath salts that I clean forgot a boy wouldn't want any
adding, I'll empty it and refill it without them."
"No, don't do that on my account, besides, it may be nice,
and you don't want to waste all your hot water on me."
"Okay then, the bathrooms all yours. Shampoo and soap are
all in there, they're all girly things too though I'm
afraid. I'm sorry I don't have any boy things you can use,
we don't often get boys to stay here."
"It's okay, I think I can stand to smell a little girly, if
it means I'm clean."
"Okay then, you go enjoy your bath."
The bathroom was another explosion of pink things. From the
pink walls, to the pink bath, pink sink, pink toilet and
pink shower cubicle. Even the water with the bath salts
fizzing away in it had a hint of pink. This room must
belong to one of Babs daughter's, or niece's maybe. It
didn't occur to me that she must have a lot of daughters
and nieces in that case, but by the time I had hung my
towel on the rail, and slipped into the bath, I really
didn't care.
It had been so long since I'd had a bath with bubbles in
it. I remember my mother filling the bath up with some kind
of kid's bubble bath, the bottle had been in the shape of a
sailor. I often wondered why boys stop having bubble baths
when they get older, when it feels so nice, and as a kid,
you enjoy messing about with the bubbles. I washed myself
all over, shampoo-ed and conditioned my hair - one thing my
mother had always told me to do was look after my hair. It
was very fine, and often got the girls at school jealous of
how nice it was.
I was just lying in the bath relaxing, when there was a
knock at the bathroom door.
"Andy!?"
"Yes Babs?"
"I've found you some clean clothes, and I've put them on
the bed for you, I think they should fit you okay. There's
a hairdryer on there too if you want to use it."
"Okay, thanks again Babs."
I got out of the bath and dried myself with the towel. The
towel felt so soft and wonderful against my skin, as if it
was caressing my skin every time I rubbed somewhere dry. I
hadn't really thought about what kind of clothes Babs would
have put on the bed, but when I went into the bedroom, I
got a little shock, although I should have been expecting
it.
On the bed, we're a pair of white cotton panties with pink
hearts on them, and a pink bow at the front. Next to them
we're a pair of white cotton ankle socks. Next to these,
we're a pair of pink pyjama bottoms and top, with little
pink flowers on them. I felt a little uneasy, but Babs had
said that she didn't often have boys stay over, so I
guessed I should feel grateful, and just put them on. I
wouldn't want to upset her after the kindness that she had
shown.
I picked up the cotton panties, and underneath I noticed
what looked like a bra, I took a closer look and saw that
it was a training bra! I put the panties on, and pulled the
pyjama bottoms on too when there was another knock at the
door and Babs walked in.
"Feeling better Andy?"
"Yes, much, I really needed that."
"Good, now we'll get you all dressed up ready for bed, and
then I can help you with your hair if you like."
"My hair?" I gasped
"Yes Andy, your hair. I've been thinking. If you don't want
the authorities to find you, you're going to have to hide,
or disguise yourself. I run a school for girls here, which
would be a perfect place for a young boy like yourself to
hide, no-one would suspect that a boy would be attending an
all girls school."
I could hear the clockwork ticking away in my head trying
to figure out just what she was suggesting I do. She was
right, I didn't want to get caught by the authorities,
because that would mean going back to the children's home,
or being put into a foster home. I'd had friends who lived
in foster homes, and they didn't like it, which made me all
that more certain that I didn't want to join them there. I
sat there thinking, still trying to work out what she was
thinking. A boy in an all girls' school would stick out
like a sore thumb, unless she meant...
"So, we can say you're my niece and start attending school
when it starts back in September."
The penny dropped, and I realised that she had meant what I
thought she meant, that I dress up and pretend to be a girl
at an all girls' school.
"You mean, you want me to pretend I'm a girl Babs, to dress
up as a girl and pretend to be one!? I can't do that, I'm a
boy!"
"Now, now Andy. There's very little physical difference
between a boy of your age and a girl of the same age, and
we are only talking about clothes. These are only clothes
after all, nothing sinister about them. But I suppose the
choice has to be up to you. I would like to have a little
girl of my own running round the place, it's felt so lonely
ever since, ever since." she paused, and seemed to get more
than a little weepy.
I looked at her, the tears we're slowly running down her
cheeks, had she taken pity on me because she had lost her
family in the same way? I stood up and flung my arms around
her to hug her.
"It's okay Babs, I'll do as you suggest, after all like you
said, it is only clothes."
"Thank you Andy." she regained her composure and continued.
"Now, we're going to have to make sure we hide you well,
and we're going to have to think of something to call you.
I think the best way is if we change the last letter of
your name from 'y' to 'I', and call you Andi. It'll mean
you won't do a 'double-take' as they say."
"Okay then, Auntie Babs." the words seemed to just melt
her.
"Now, as you've probably guessed, this is a training bra,
it's what young girls wear when they start to develop
breasts, now put your hands out and I'll help you on with
it."
"Auntie Babs do I have to?"
"Yes you do young lady, unless you want to be found out?"
"No, I guess not."
"Good. Now this particular bra goes over your head and
through your arms. It's very similar to the sport's bras
you may wear for gym. We may get you a nicer one when
you've developed a little more."
"Developed more?" This was starting to worry me.
"Oh, silly me, I keep forgetting, no don't worry about that
for now."
A sigh of relief crept over me, but what did she mean by
'for now'?
With the training bra on, I put the pyjama top on. The bra
felt a little tight, and I almost felt a little sorry for
young girls who had to wear these daily, then I remembered,
I would have to wear one daily, well, hopefully, it
wouldn't be for long. Only as long as the authorities we're
looking for me, and then I could be off.
Auntie Babs reached a little under the bed, and pulled out
what looked like two white fluffy bunny rabbits. She
started to put them on my feet, and I realised they we're
slippers, really comfortable ones at that. After helping me
with my hair, and commenting on how nice it was and that I
should grow it, it was time for bed. I took my bunny
slippers off and put them under the bed. Auntie Babs tucked
me in, and gave me a gentle kiss on the forehead.
"We've got a long day ahead of us tomorrow Andi, I've got
to teach you to act like a girl, good night."
And with that, I took the vitamin pills that Auntie Babs
had left for me, and fell into a relaxing sleep.
